He sued the government of Canada successfully for emotional/physical damages and was awarded $9 million dollars (!) and an apology delivered personally by the Prime Minister. The public was supporting Arar 100% throughout the judicial proceedings there. An amazing story. But Canada has a Charter of Human Rights that its Supreme Court Justices respect and fully comply with. (Also constitutionally enshrined is "gender equality" since l982.)
