Obama Disses Senators Before Even Taking Office

John Kass wrote a biting piece for today’s Chicago Tribune. You need to read the whole thing. It’s that good. Kass addresses the outcome of the Burris / US Senate leadership smackdown and says it was never in doubt.

So the Chicago Way hauled off and slapped the U.S. Senate in the face—one of those backhands with the knuckles to unsuspecting lips—and guess who blinked?

It wasn’t Chicago.

It was the Senate.

Get used to it, America. And it won’t be the last time either.
—————–
Now [Burris] has President-elect Barack Obama behind him, muscling Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid in a phone call earlier in the week. So much for transcending the old politics.

Read the rest ->

Kass, who says the national media treats Obama as “the gentle Mr. Tumnus of American politics,” goes on to say Obama got all Chicago on Reid on the phone, prompting Reid’s quick turnaround on whether Burris would be seated.

Obama is perfectly within his rights to try to wriggle out of an embarrassing political situation, and what could be more embarrassing for him than to have Illinois political corruption constantly on the news in Washington?

People might start asking questions, wondering how Obama could come out of a city run by the wrought-iron fists of the Daley machine but smell like the neck of a baby after a bath.

I’m still wondering.

Yet Obama was tricky, not mentioning his phone call to Reid when talking to reporters Wednesday. He said Tombstone was the Senate’s business, not his business.

Kass noted that Obama very nearly did not have to admit to phoning Reid but for one reporter’s last minute question at that presser.

Obama almost wasn’t asked anything about Burris on Wednesday. One reporter barely tossed it up at the end, after others asked him about the war in the Gaza Strip (Obama still can’t comment about Gaza because he’s not yet president) and the economy (though he’s not president, you can’t stop the guy from commenting on that one).

Kass ends with this:

“People ask a lot of times why we have to do various things procedurally here in the Senate,” Reid told reporters. “It’s because we’re the Senate: That’s how we operate.”

Correction. That’s how you used to operate. You’re from Nevada, but Obama comes from Chicago.

It’s sure got to be difficult to eat a big hunk of humble pie when your lips are stinging, but here’s some advice, Senators.

Have another slice. There’s plenty more.

Kass referred to another Tribune article on the matter. According to that earlier article, someone in the Obama administration pressured Reid into caving on the Burris appointment. Doing so caused Reid to pressure Jesse White, the IL Secretary of State who refused to sign the appointment papers for Burris although his authority to refuse is in question.

The U.S. Senate’s Democratic majority opened the way Wednesday for Roland Burris to become Illinois’ next senator, pressured by President-elect Barack Obama to remove a politically consuming distraction less than two weeks before he assumes the White House during an economic crisis.

A top Senate Democratic source said Obama’s concerns about the Burris situation were among several factors that resulted in an about-face by Senate leaders, who had vowed to reject Burris or anyone else named by disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Obama told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and others when he visited Capitol Hill this week “that if Burris had legal standing—and it appears he has—he should be seated as quickly as possible,” a senior Democratic official said Wednesday. Obama earlier had sided with Reid’s opposition to the appointment.
——————–

[Jesse] White said he resented Reid pressuring him, comparing it to “strapping me in a wheelchair and pushing [me] down four flights of stairs.” The secretary of state said he did not believe his signature was necessary for Burris to be seated.

It was not clear during the well publicized meeting between Reid and Burris what prompted such an about face from the Senate leader.

Appearing after the meeting with Burris, Reid and Durbin offered reporters no explanation for the apparent change in heart in looking to seat the former attorney general, who became Illinois’ first statewide elected African-American when he won the comptroller’s office in 1978.

The news story said a call came from the “Obama administration.”

One Senate Democratic source, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the issue, said the Senate leadership had been urged by the incoming Obama administration to “end the distraction” involving Burris in light of the economic crisis the president-elect is inheriting.

Of course, it turns out the call came from PEBO himself.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Senator Feinstein broke with Obama over the nomination of Leon Panetta mainly due to turf issues.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s chilly response Tuesday to outreach from President-elect Barack Obama – after stomping on his choice of fellow Californian Leon Panetta as head of the CIA – dealt the incoming administration what is being described as the first “brush-back pitch” from powerful Democrats in Washington.

Feinstein also broke with Obama and Reid when she said earlier in the week that Burris should be seated, prompting Biden to say Feinstein should have received a “heads up” about important nominations. So she took two positions opposing Obama. Why?

Those who know Feinstein well and have worked intimately with her insist that her public critique of Panetta was not personal in nature. . . . insiders say that this week’s dustup was more a message to the incoming Obama administration about Beltway politics.
————-
One high-level Democrat with strong ties to Feinstein, who spoke on condition of anonymity, characterized the senator’s statements on Panetta this week as “a show of strength, a brush-back pitch, from a powerful chair who can be helpful or hurtful” to Obama.

“She feels strongly about protocol,” Feinstein’s friend said. “As chair of the Intelligence Committee, she expected a courtesy call, especially if it was going to be outside the norm.”

“If she did not respond with a show of strength, she’d be seen as weak,” the insider said. “This is not the time for weak leaders. And she is not the kind of wallflower that would simply turn the other cheek with this kind of offense.”
————–
With just 14 days until the president-elect’s inauguration, the unexpected umbrage from a powerful California senator over the naming of a well-known and highly respected California nominee underscores what one Democratic insider describes as a political “reality check for Obama.

“The lesson is that, despite the Democratic euphoria over winning the White House back and expanding our margins in the House and the Senate, you still have very powerful committee chairs … who will be very protective of their turf,” said Democratic strategist Garry South.

“Unexpected” umbrage? Are you kidding? Of course, a brush back pitch might be met with more crowding of the plate.

But critics [who are these unnamed critics, I wonder?] decried Feinstein’s move as representative of tired inside-the-Beltway politics – the very thing voters rejected when they elected Obama.
—————
Some, who won’t be quoted by name, even suggest that Feinstein aims to establish her clout as an influential player on intelligence issues – and as a key voice from California – as Obama takes office. Panetta, they note, has long been popular with state Democrats and has a good relationship with the incoming president.

Hmmmmm. Reid caves, but Feinstein pushes back. Boxer, not pushing back, gently reminds Obama that he needs to play nice.

Boxer acknowledged that for any president, “it’s good to work with the chairman” of key committees on important appointments – though she noted Obama “didn’t confer with me on the (Environmental Protection Agency) appointment. I talked to him about it, and I would have loved to have known.”

Interesting. Apparently the incoming administration isn’t working with the Democratic senators very well. And before anyone suggests incompetence, I’ll just call BS on that. At this level, people darn well know how to use the phone and smooth the waters. Not doing so sends its own message. What message is Obama sending? I think John Kass knows.

  • Bud White

Apparently the incoming administration isn’t working with the Democratic senators very well.

I wonder how the Senators will view Obama’s trillion dollar pork “stimulus” to special interest groups.

    • Pennsylvania Red

United States Senators have a pretty high opinion of themselves, and absolutely love the power they wield. Dianne Feinstein spent her time in the Senate actually legislating and “playing nice”, not running for President from the time she was elected to office.

Biden weighed in with his own criticism of PEB0′s affront to Feinstein. Boxer was not even consulted on the EPA appointment.

you still have very powerful committee chairs … who will be very protective of their turf,” said Democratic strategist Garry South.

The Senators who are miffed at this premature stage of the game are all Democrats. What a way for PEB0 to alienate the very ones who could have considerable clout in what occurs during his first four years of office.

I had heard PEB0 was consolidating all his power in the White House, a la Nixon, and these dismissals of his own party’s heavyweights seems to indicate that is the case.

This is so fun to watch. All of these little piccadilloes cozily quartered within the Democratic party. Democrats will never have the discipline of Republicans and I am very happy about that. Not only is it more fun to watch but it is even more democratic. If you look at the history of the Dems in congress, they have always been strong and demanding of any president but especially a Dem.

    • Strawberrybitch

I totally agree, it’s like watching the old Friday Night Roller Derby with ringside seats. I’m having a blast.

Chicago style politics trying to take over DC?

Obama never bothered to stay in DC and the Senate long enough to understand how the system works.

He seems to think that since he is the Emperor Dictator President . . . President elect — all he has to do is make a phone call and use his magic voice and the rainbows appear and the birds sing.

Obama is both a passive aggressive and a Narcissist — we are going to see a whole lot of drama — his impeachment will be must watch tv.

Boy, Oh, boy! I cannot wait. We don’t have to wait too long after 1/20/09, do we? I am usually a very patient person, but I really am losing patience with Barrakula and his supporters.

Should we start a pool on what the exact date of impeachment hearings will start?

I think I’ll start one at work. We all despise Odrama.

I agree with this completely. And since the truth in Obama is most often the opposite of what he says, I expect there to be no shortage of Obama-Drama. Of course Obama will blame it all on those around him, which should grow old very fast.

      • wodiej

Kass isn’t letting the impending coronation on January 20 stop him from shining a bright light on the slimy ooze that has spawned so many of the new executive team. Good for him! And, good for us as Kass’ work offers one more source of information in an increasingly censored world.

    • Andrew P

I second that. A lot of people who should know better have gone along with the race card being played here.

    • lorac

I bet in a way that it’s satisfying for these Chicago reporters that Obama cheated won the election. There were 2 or 3 Chicago reporters who were trying to get the word out about Obama, and the MSM outside of Chicago wouldn’t pick it up. Maybe now people will listen to them and appreciate their historical knowledge of Obama.

  • http://www.wewillnotbesilenced2008.com OBAMA IS A FRAUD

I guess my hopes and prayers that Obama would be better as POTUS than I expected will wind up just that: wistful hopes and prayers.

As for John Kass? Too bad people weren’t reading his stuff “before” the election. He tried to warn everyone. But few listened.

And the Dem leadership seems to be slowly realizing they got more than they bargained for. I wonder if Pelosi still believes Obama is a “gift from God?” She might have to do an uptick on the Botox to keep that smile in place.

    Should be interesting.

BO comments on the economy because he needs to wind the stock market as low as possible, so he won’t be judged harshly for his plans. He will blame all financial problems on Bush, not his “recovery”plans.

All that new kind of hopey, changey politics stuff has made his unicorn very sick. The Middle East has only losers, no one has parted the sea yet, and he knows that he will fail as well. BO likes to manipulate people, not make decisions.
BO will not talk about the Middle East for as long as possible.

    • pcmoore28

So true. He has already made a statement to make sure we ALL know he is inheriting a 1.3 trillion dollar budget deficit. The bar continues to be lowered.

Of course, his plans were challenged by Hillary during the campaign and she was told to shut up and quit. Many knew his campaign pledges were a fairytale but they hoped……and so it goes.

    • oowawa

no one has parted the sea yet,

Now, now . . . O never said he would part the sea, he just implied he would stop it from rising. And that remark was probably just Jon Favreau waxing poetic and biting off a little more than his boss could chew. The One probably no sooner read it from the teleprompter than he thought “Uh-oh–did that f-ing Favreau really write that?!?!”

But we’ll all have to start closely monitoring world sea levels starting on Jan. 20th.

Thank goodnes for Kass. The few professional journalists and all we citizen journalists MUST keept the heat on bho the fraud. The Dem and Rep powers behind him, and the big money oligarchy behind them (bankers like Soros and Rockefeller) can only cover for him so much. How long will Rezko have to rot in the Federal Pen? Will he sing some more?

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

wow, this is filled with all kinds of juicy tidbits! I love the Kass piece.

Reid, heaping praise on Burris after meeting him for the first time. “He is very engaging, an extremely nice man and he presents himself very well.” Presents himself well? Do we have another Biden on our hands? haha

I like Burris. I don’t know much about him, prior to these past two weeks, but he seems like a nice man, and a funny guy. I loved his line about not participating in pay to play because he doesn’t have any money! haha

I loved this one by Kass:
“One reporter barely tossed it up at the end, after others asked him about the war in the Gaza Strip (Obama still can’t comment about Gaza because he’s not yet president) and the economy (though he’s not president, you can’t stop the guy from commenting on that one).”

I thought the same thing. Although, I understand that he can’t do/say anything to mess up what Bush and Rice are trying to do at the moment, he can at least make some kind of statement… It seems like the longer he does nothing, the more the tensions worsen.

  • Diana L. C.

I continue to be amazed at my own naivete as I went into the primary. How could I, at my fairly advanced age, have been so trusting of “my party”?

I got a call last night from a young eager guy trying to get me to contribute to Al Franken because he needs to have more money since Coleman is suing.

Poor young man–he had to get an earful from me. I told him that the PEBO’s behavior in the primary had made me value more than ever the fight to keep our voting process fair. I told him I would like both sides of the Franken/Coleman election to be satisfied that indeed one person/one vote was the rule. I also told him that I was not very concerned about the balance of power in Congress, as I was not happy when the Republicans controlled all three branches and didn’t think that we should necessarily swing the totally opposite way with the Democrats controlling everything, especially after Pelosi’s recent moves.

Basically, I hope he had a very hard time getting any contributions.

    • Peggy Sue

Diane, I feel the same way. I’ve always been a loyal Dem, thought “we” were the good guys.

This election, the primary in particular, put a different spin on my entire point of view. I will never again vote along strict party lines.

From now on, it’s about the man/woman running, period. The Dems sold their soul in my estimation.

Fool me once. But I won’t be fooled a second time.

  • rolling thunder

nObama has no idea about Washington politics and protocol. I have said this a few times before. As a politician, he isn’t ‘all that’. All he knows how to do is hustle and cheat on elections.

So Franken is trying to cheat his way in too.
Look at just how Franken and Ritchie (Backed by Acorn and Soros) are working to steal this election from Republican Norm Coleman.

Ritchie has taken votes that were clearly for Coleman and rejected them, putting them in a pile for the courts to decide at a later date.
Meanwhile, Franken votes have been accepted, giving Franken an artificial lead.

During the recount, supposed “errors” were corrected, almost always favoring Franken. Though this is statistically improbable, the votes were counted for Franken.
In one voting precinct that clearly benefitted Coleman, the Ritchie led Canvassing Board ruled that the recount will not include them — instead that one precinct will have to live with the final vote total as of election night.

The Ritchie led canvassing board has even admitted they are “not going to be entirely consistent” when reviewing challenged ballots and has ruled a number of votes as votes for Franken when his circle is marked and as under votes when the Coleman circle is identically marked.
The effort to subvert a fair vote is so obvious, even a Democratic election official in Minneapolis admitted votes are being counted twice in several precincts.

Simply put, the Ritchie led Secretary of State office wants to decide this election in Franken’s favor and certify him the “winner.”
They want dirty Harry Reid and Senate Democrats to seat him in the Senate.

They don’t care if Coleman fights the election in court — after the fact.
As National Republican Senatorial Chair Texas Senator John Cornyn said that Al Franken is falsely declaring victory based on an artificial lead created on the back of the double counting of ballots.

The RNLA are waging a fierce battle to stop Franken, Soros and Ritchie.
Repubs will expose these illicit attempts to steal the election and to seat Al Franken in the Senate.
Remember this Senate seat is crucial. If Franken joins the Democrats he will give them 59 seats. They will be just one short vote of a filibuster.
They will be able to push through a radical liberal agenda

I do hope those uppity women from CA hold BHO’s feet to the fire and do not let him get away with things like a spoiled child like he has been treated so much during the election cycle.

Feinstein was correct in saying that Burris should be seated according to our Constitution—I’m hoping she’ll be one of those “protocol” senators who will not bend to BHO’s dismissive, egotistical will. ONLY when it became embarassing to Obama and the Democratic leadership did Obama push Reid to sit down, shut up and recognize Burris. It was to take attention from the whole mess and end it. If it was truly an honorable act, he would’ve read up on the constitution and Illinois state law last week and taken a public and forceful stand THEN to recognize Burris.

I figure if America and eveyone was on the Harry Reid (and Obamas) side for the past week, Burris would still be standing outside knocking on the door asking to be let in.

Yes, but that is pretty clear. O-shit! is just showing what a egotistical backtracking wimp even though he shows no regard for the Constitution or law. He just didn’t like how it was looking and would affect him. Of course, he’s not admitting that he supported breaking the law when he was joining the chorus……shhhh :)

Thanks, LisaB. Kass is a valuable, and hilarious, source for Chicago political translations.

Yesterday Odumbo slapped the entire congress in the face exactly as Kass wrote.

Today Odumbo did it again in his speech at Mason U. Odumbo blamed everything on Congress and former Administrations for the failing economy and comes back with policies mostly described by Hillary during the Primaries.

The unfortunate thing being passed by and allowing Odumbo to get away with thus far are his claims made today of:

Earmarks, guess Barry forgot about his own earmarks, wonder how the museum section devoted to Henry Crown is coming along with Barry’s earmarks and the U of C hospital earmarks to provide Michelle her high paying position there?

Congress did nothing to prevent the current economic situation, well Barry you were a member of Congress for 4 years, yet you did nothing to prevent either as a Senator, but less we forget you were to busy running for POTUS to be bothered doing anything after your 143 day in your position as Senator.

Former administrations did nothing to Barry, well why then did you vote for everything Bush proposed and how come your administration is packed with former Bill Clinton administration personel?

Housing crisis the result of greedy Wall Stet people and poor regulations allowing people who could ill afford a house to obtain one, Bary Bary you forgot it was your friends and personal army of Acrorn thugs who were the cause of these people obtaining homes they had no business obtaining?

And the list of todays speech goes on and on, but one thing was completely left out of it!

Barry Odumbo was a part of the problem for years and there is no way he can be a part of the solution, but Congress give him the $800 Billion he seeks to play monopoly at the expense of taxpayers who actually work to earn those taxpayer dollars you want to squander off to your friends who bought yu your public housing for the next 4 years!

Oh forgot, in todays’ speech, Odumbo wants to retrofit 75% of Government buildings to save energy, does that mean he will impliment his godfather of politics Tony Rezko’s policy and put locks on the fuel lines to heat the buildings and let the people freeze as was done in Chicago, will definately increase poductivity since workers will need to hustle to keep warm!

Just a thought since Barry has no other experience in these sorts of matters than those of his mentor Tony Rezko, prisoner of the Federal jail of Chicago!

despite the fact that the Bushes and Clintons are like oil and water

Hillary thinks ‘W’ is a joke and she can’t wait until he backs his UHaul up and LEAVES.
He claims he’s above the constitutional law, He’s a dictator. But he’s a citizen though.

  • hmmmmmmmmmm

What colorful turn of words some on the Chicago Tribune’s Kass comments section have.

“JoeCb – Ah yes, Obama is the political virgin coming from the whorehouse known as Chicago politics. Yup. uh- huh. This will be fascinating to watch for the next few years.”

posters, one of the important things to note here is that the media seems to be falling out of love with obama. some of the dem politicans seem to looking for their spines. pelsoi is so full how important she is that she is failing to look for the stab in the back that comes in politics for those that suffer that illusion. obamba will be happy to supply the the knife, now who will rid me of this hapless female?

I got my lesson in the whole matter. The democrats of Illinois, along with Harry Reid, think they can do whatever they want, breaking the law like drinking water, as long as they have some sort of news media lynching rope going.
I would remind the elite above the law slapped down playas, that one accusation of coverup up and discreet crime, does not give open book play on an assortment of follow on crimes, carried out and promoted in full view of the public.
I guess they got ahead of themselves and forgot that since Blagogevich was under the gun, they couldn’t start breaking the law left and right and just blame it all on Blago.
I must say it was extremely enjoyable watching the SLAPDOWN occur so quickly.
Nonetheless, it gave me keen insight into just how little these arrogant know it all powerheads actually think about what is written down as law. How easily they very conveniently forget all about rule of law, and go with their “gut” and their own agenda, as long as they figure the news and public fingers are pointing at something else. (Blago in this case).
I shudder to think what other massive crimes they commit behind the scenes, as they collude and excuse themselves, telling eachother how they must act (outside the bounds of the law of course) in order to “correct the wrong that others have committed” – wether or not anything as silly as convicted in a court of law first ever enters into any of it.
I’d say the newspaper and media people are licking their lips and salivating, noticing how easily some bad press can lead a whole swarm of the polits astray, in full view of the public.
I thought it was astounding when Quinn stood up and demanded that Blago follow the wishes of Obama on the senate seat, the guy who abused that very senate seat to run for potus, then threw it away when he no longer wanted to collect the paycheck for doing nearly nothing – all in the heat of Quinn’s boss being accused of playing games with that very senate seat.
I wonder how Quinn didn’t look in the mirror that evening and say to himself ” I’m a complete moron. Nowhere else in the entire world does the quitter of any job get to tell their former and also the current boss, what they can do about replacing them. ”
This has been a real eye opener.
NO elite power hungry insane politicians, you don’t get to just fall all over eachother breaking the law
openly because someone else has been accused of something. Sheesh !
