Yeah, I believe it. One thing that astonishes me is that when I write to our junior senator, Maria Cantwell, her response always factors in precisely what I said. Patty Murray's are more boilerplate, but she's very good on so many issues.

Shirin, I am curious about your view of the planned Bhutto demonstration.

Well, Susan, I gave up writing to Diane Feinstein because they always sent back a boilerplate that said how important it was to hear from me about my concerns, but that basically these are her views, so eff you. And of course the content of the biolerplate message almost never addressed, either directly or indirectly, the issue I had expressed by very important-to-them concerns.

DAMN. My post about Amnesty International didn't show up. But I did add the link as an update at the top of the story. You can go there and send an e-mail to Bush complaining about the human rights violations in Pakistan.

I just got my reply from the White House. Wow. They can't even bother to send me a boilerplate response specific to the TOPIC about which I wrote them:

On behalf of President Bush, thank you for your correspondence.

We appreciate hearing your views and welcome your suggestions.

Due to the large volume of e-mail received, the White House cannot respond to every message.

Thank you again for taking the time to write.

AMNESTY wants us all to take action -- yeah, it's a letter to Bush, who I am sure really cares what we think, but it's good nonetheless to do something:

The military crackdown in Pakistan represents a direct assault on human rights.

Last Saturday, General Musharaff effectively declared martial law, suspended the bulk of the constitution and acquired powers to amend it without any parliamentary procedure.

Since then, hundreds have been arrested and arbitrarily detained across Pakistan including lawyers, journalists, human rights defenders and political activists. Yesterday, several Supreme Court Justices were sacked, including the Chief Justice, and today they are reported to be under house arrest.

We fear that this assault on key institutions of accountability, combined with sweeping emergency powers, will exacerbate existing patterns of human rights abuse, including torture and other ill-treatment, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances and use of excessive force to suppress peaceful dissent.

I'm worried. Let's see ... that demo will take place sometime during the night tonight. How can we follow and see what's going on? BBC World News radio? My speakers are shot, so I can't listen. But the British newspapers should have lots of good reports coming in ... I suppose the Pakistani newspapers are being heavily censored right now so they can't report much.

I found it fascinating that Rozen picked out that paragraph. Bhutto has lost a lot of credibility by being a new poodle for Bush, and now she can't work cooperatively with Musharraf ... it's a mess.

ALSO: I want to urge all of you to listen/watch the Charlie Rose show with Armitage and others. It is really, really good. Despite our bitterness towards Armitage re Val, he does have some fascinating insights into international policy, and he really goes after the Bush administration's rotten foreign policy. He defends what he and Powell tried to do, and some of their early successes. But, he told Charlie that he wanted the show to be about what to do in the future and, to that end, he had some very good ideas -- all common sense, but good nonetheless.

Do you think Bhutto will go ahead with her (threatened) massive protest on Friday, to which she promises to attract a million Pakistanis? Will this demonstration create wholesale chaos and violence?

If she calls for this I want her walking in the front of the line. She got 170 some people killed last time.
I heard that Negroponte supports Musharaf.
Where is General Mahmoud Ahmed these days?

FYI: Charlie Rose's guest tonight is Richard Armitage, and he's telling Charlie that he can't imagine the U.S. intervening militarily in Pakistan, at this point. Oh joy.

If you missed the airing, the video should be up at Rose's site tomorrow: http://www.charlierose.com

I'm just listening to the beginning. Will report more as I hear it.
