Bernanke, Bush, and Hagel: Hot News

Does anyone else find this headline disturbing?Bernanke says dollar to stay main reserve currency” (Bernanke faced “a barrage of questions from lawmakers about the threat posed by the weak dollar, which hit a fresh low against a basket of currencies on Thursday …”)

How does it feel, George? In First Bush Veto Override, Senate Enacts Water Bill”

Steve Clemons hearts Chuck Hagel so much it makes me giggle, but he’s right to highlight Hagel’s powerful speech today on U.S. foreign policy: “Loose talk of World War III, intimidation, threats, bellicose speeches only heighten the dangers we face in the world. Without offering solutions and building international alliances we only strengthen the hand of those who prey upon and play to a confused, frightened and disorganized world. …” And there’s an update at the end about Iran:

At his blog Washington Note, Clemons features “quick tour de force of grim global realities and America’s eroding position from Senator Hagel’s comments before a session organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies”:

Martial law declared in Pakistan; state of emergency in Georgia; Turkey threatens to invade Iraq; six members of the Afghan parliament along with scores of others killed in one of Afghanistan’s largest ever suicide attacks; an escalating drumbeat of U.S.-Iran tensions; seventy six U.S. Senators supported a resolution urging the President to designate an entire branch of Iran’s military as a terrorist organization. . .and the President announced unprecedented unilateral sanctions against Iran’s forces; and, finally, President Bush warned of World War III unless Iran acts to stop its efforts to develop a nuclear weapons capability.

These events are one frame of a broad confluence of events occurring in the world today. In the Middle East, Iraq is mired in a deep and dangerous civil war, with dim prospects for national political reconciliation. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict festers and worsens, and intra-Palestinian divisions present a pivotal obstacle, creating uncertain prospects for a U.S.-hosted peace conference. Syria is ostracized and insecure. Lebanon is paralyzed by a devastating political deadlock; Iran casts an unpredictable and ominous shadow over the region; and Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia are trapped in this dangerous net.

Globally, our relations with Russia have sunk to a new post-Cold War low. U.S.-Turkey relations are in tatters over our inability to translate Turkey’s 21st Century Government and objectives into a relationship of mutual interests that has been the case since World War II. The U.S.-India civil nuclear assistance deal has been set back and is now in a state of uncertainty. Afghanistan continues to lose ground. . .including record-breaking opium production. . .and Al Qaeda has re-emerged stronger than at any time since it was ousted from Afghanistan six years ago. The border between Afghanistan and Pakistan represents the most dangerous zone in the world. . .and we have little control and limited influence over it. Nuclear armed India casts a wary eye on its nuclear armed neighbor to the west.

And, the price of oil edges close to $100 per barrel. Record-breaking energy prices and surging demand are reshaping the global geopolitical economic power landscape. . .from Russia, China and India. . .to Angola, Nigeria, Venezuela, Norway. . .and the United States. The world is witnessing a diffusion of power never seen before that will increasingly be the norm for the 21st century.

Events are overtaking governments as they swirl in wild gyrations around us. All too often, we mistakenly try to compartmentalize and isolate events and issues, and do not stop to consider how a series of events are interconnected and impact the world. No nation can affect these events acting alone. Unless nations work to shape, influence and guide the course of global events, events will shape themselves…and the world, leading to an ever more dangerous planet.

UPDATE: I missed this earlier. Yesterday, Steve Clemons featured this:

The Case for a US-Iran “Grand Bargain”

Flynt Leverett previously served as Senior Director for Middle East Affairs on President George W. Bush’s National Security Council and is now the Director of the Geopolitics of Energy Initiative at the New America Foundation.

At 2 pm today, he will be offering this testimony, “All or Nothing: The Case for a US-Iranian ‘Grand Bargain’” at a hearing before the Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs of the House Committee on Government Oversight and Reform.

As usual, Leverett is mesmerizing in his sober, serious, analytical take on what needs to be done with Iran and how to correct our course. … READ ALL.

Chuck Hagel is quite good on foreign policy matters. Totally sucks on domestic politics.

Patrick, if you’re up for it, I’d like to encourage you — since you’re so interested in all of this — to watch the Tuesday night show on Charlie Rose with Richard Armitage and Joseph Nye. It was a wide-ranging discussion about world affairs, and Rose asked them about so much. You can watch/listen at http://www.charlierose.com (As I commented elsewhere here, we are all disgusted with Armitage for what he did to Val, but he does have quite a background and he did meet with Musharraf on Sept. 12, 2001 and pressure him hard — and says he knows Musharraf quite well, which I believe — so his views are important.

I ALSO keep meaning to look up the new document out by Armitage and Nye — about “soft” politics around the globe. It sounds like a highly worthwhile document. They designed it in good part to have all of the presidential candidates read and then enunciate in their campaigns. And it was VERY clear from their remarks that they must be HORRIFIED by the saber-rattling of the major GOP candidates. They didn’t specifically say so, and Rose failed to ask them what they think of the GOP candidates’ bellicose pronouncements, but I’m dead certain they’re disturbed.

Outstanding round ups — in your various postings — of THE latest…hottest…information and issues now, Susan!

Thanks again. I just hope your hips are doing all right! :-)

Thank you, and hugs! I somehow got the flu, and ache all over! I had to cancel my first outing today to see my local doctor, but that was going to be just a token visit anyway simply because the Seattle hospital put it on my “to-do” list. All I really need from him is his opinion if I should keep taking the Warfarin, the blood thinner … my latest blood test wasn’t good, so he may decide to keep it on me longer. There is an official “Coumadin Clinic” that monitors this for all people here on blood thinners, and they called me yesterday with more instructions. I’m close to the cut-off date when I can stop taking it.

The Coumadin Clinic woman asked me if I’m active — i.e., do I move around a lot to keep my blood flowing so I don’t get clots, and I told her that yes I do. I’m very active, really. Lots of walking back and forth, schlepping all of my ice packs to the fridge, and my snacks and fluids. And feeding all of the CHILDREN — which I’m so glad to be home to do again! All of the homeless cats, the birds, and the raccoonies at night.

Then, two days ago, I had seven people here throughout the day to help me with various things. I’m really glad today that I haven’t had any visitors — kind of a nice break, and I get to rest more. Hips are still very sore, deep inside — the ice packs really help.

it’s also so much fun to be back reading and collecting news again. You’re quite the reader, Sandy — if you notice anything, please e-mail me with it. And I can give you my phone number should you find something hot that needs to be posted. Thank you! And it’d be fun to chat with you again.

Susan I’m not sure where this started, but sounds serious. Also sounds like you are taking good care of yourself and getting help.

If I find interesting topics or issues would you prefer that I post them or send them to you?

        • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

That’s always welcome, Kathleen. My e-mail is linked with my username here. Thank you.

Just read your whole piece. I have been listening to and reading everything Flynt Leverett has to say about Iran. This guy left the Bush administration because of their middle east policy.

gonna make it kinda of hard for the repuglicans to blame all of this shit on the Democrats now that Senator Hagel has fully documented the destructive incompetence of the bush administation

and from the looks of it, the dollar will fail long before a Democrat sits in the Whitehouse, so the GOP is gonna have to take credit for that too

the repukelican party is left with gay bashing and blaming Democrats for george bush’s failed invasion and occupation of Iraq

at least the repukes can count on their dedicated koolaide drinkers, which is less than 30% of the voting public

    heck of a job georgie

OT, but the very first thing I thought of when I read about those loose nukes was those religious nuts @ the Air Force Academy:

This article doesn’t suggest that’s what happened, but to me, it explains a lot.

We all know what is coming. Who gains from a weak American “Democracy”? The Black Watch soldier I had the pleasure of buying a drink a few years back could not understand why America would elect this man twice?? I realized then that while we were told we’re fightin’ them over there…the wind still blows; one may make stands on principle or political expediency; it’s quickly becoming a mute point considering what is coming down the pipe. Hold on.

Great compilation Susan!! Get well soon.

I read through the Hagel and Leverett pieces, and I agree with Clemons that Hagel never correctly pins the blame. And to add to Hagel’s tour de farce, every barbaric tincan madman the world over now thinks he has to go-ahead to torture with impunity because the Shining City is doing it. *Spit*

Hagel and Leverett’s words are fine, noble, sane and admirable, but no grand bargain and no exacerbation of the bu$hCo tour de farce will occur until Darth and the Hood Ornament are out of office. Just ain’t gonna happen with these losers with 438 more days to abuse the power. Presented with all the right things to do, they’ll choose the exact opposite. Treason. Premeditated.

I think both of w’s elections were stolen. (They are still litigating Ohio.)
Who would have imagined such a series of disasters since 2000???
Maybe the Democratic slogan for 2008 can be “It’s the Stupidity – Period!”

    • http://www.petgazette-pets.com OleHippieChick

It’s way bad now, but imagine the depth of shit we’d be in if they were 1. as devious as they are AND 2. competent?

  • http://thumbsnap.com/v/78mn2yFc.jpg 1Watt

Hey OHC, you the one I remember from SmirkingChimp years ago?

    • http://www.petgazette-pets.com OleHippieChick

      Yep. Howdy again, 1!

  • Thinker

Susan, I agree with Fred C Dodds. We should get back to the gold standard expediently, dismantle the stock exchange and create a World that relies on the community and not Globalisation.

Governance was meant to set standards that all community members would accept and rely on as reasonable cooperation. Instead it has been used to push the barrel by zealous crusadors and greedy people. Neither are in touch with a community. The Community, for its part is largely ignorant and impressionable. Therefore the fissile arguments [which, often, in the wider scope are groundless] used to justify rules are perpetually chirped by the crickets in a surrogate anthem.

Having said that, there are many positive things that happen and places like this indicate that community may have lost its identity, but it hasn’t lost its spirit.

IMPORTANT: In the waterboarding post below, I’ve added a link to VIDEO/AUDIO + TRANSCRIPT of Malcolm Nance, the retired Navy SEAL who taught POW resistance techniques and waterboarded many trainees and was himself waterboarded many times. He testified against waterboarding today before a House committee.

So sorry to hear about your flu….and the sore hips…and blood tests. Sending you some healing energy…and hoping things will be better soon. Sounds like you are doing an amazing job (and LOOKS like it, too….from all we’ve read that you’ve been posting.)

Scary times. Esp. with such incompetence! (as others have said)
