BREAKING NEWS–UN Security Council Acts on Gaza

I am sure both Israel and Hamas will claim victory, but most of the discussion preceding tonight’s vote on the UN Security Council Resolution calling for a cease fire in Gaza devoted more time to condemning Israel’s conduct rather than Hamas. Israel’s diplomatic position is not strengthened after this and the pressure going forward will be to open Gaza’s economic borders. The vote went 14-0 with the U.S. abstaining.

Looks like Condi got orders from the White House to abstain but it looks like she was ready to vote in favor. This tees up the Obama Administration in two weeks to join the rest of the international community in pushing for an end to the fighting. Israel may celebrate this in the short run but it is at best a pyrrhic victory.

Until Hamas recognizes Israel’s right to exist this trouble will never be over. Hamas will contine to sneak armamants into Gaza, and when they are again well armed they will repeat their insidious attacks on Israel. Since Israel has no choice but to defend herself, it will start all over again.

Why can’t some of the wiser heads in the Arab world get together and insist that Hamas and other groups recognize that Israel has a right to live in peace, to go about their daily lives without the worry of suicide bombers in their midst?

If all the energy that is used in hating and fighting were used in productive ventures the whole area would better served. If all the money that is used for arms and ammunition were used to make a better life for their citizens, the Gaza would be a much better place in which to live.

Because real, factual, documented genocide was not so long ago carried out against them. So the entire Western World decided since they had failed Jews, a homeland must be made for them, so they could fight for and defend themselves. Britain took “Palestine” from the Ottoman Empire and carved it up. Given this information…

1. Iran is past the point of no return which is why Obama bothered himself too make a statement about “umbrellas.”

2. Palestinians elected a terrorist organization committed to Israel’s destruction and sponsored by Iran who shares their philosophy that Israel should be “wiped off the map.”

“The only way to confront the Zionist enemy is the continuation and fortification of resistance and Jihad,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted as saying September 3, 2005, in a meeting with the militant group Islamic Jihad’s secretary general Ramazan Abdullah (AFP, September 3, 2005). In October 2005, recently elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad quoted Ayatollah Khomeini and declared, “As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map.” The president added: “And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism” (AP, October 26, 2005).

3. A government that supports suicide bombing and uses its own civilians as human shields does not care if they go down with Israel.

Besides killing members of a group, inflicting serious mental and bodily harm and carrying out practices meant to eradicate a race, Genocide is defined by the UN as imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group and forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. Nothing even remotely like this has happened, and comparing the Palestinian plight to the Holocaust is completely stupid.

I would like to see Palestinans reject the Iranian proxy government Hamas and voice political dissent diplomatically through Fatah instead of violently with rockets through Hamas. Any government that uses human shields deserves to lose an election.

A reasonable proposal would be a Nato sponsored West Berlin solution under which the West takes custody of Gaza, guarantees civil order and civil rights and floods the zone with investment and jobs. The PLO knew it had to keep its population in desperate poverty, and Hamas is happily staying the course. If Arabs see a model of prosperity, they have a stake in stopping terrorists from screwing it up — especially if a Nato security force will back them up.

It’s nice to see the international community coming forward with solutions, but it would have been better if there was an outcry when Hamas launched rockets at Israel for weeks on end.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia would cooperate, because it would check the regional influence of Iran-Syria. Israel has the right to defend itself, and Hamas has disregarded the last ceasefire agreement. Another ceasefire will not work, and Israel cannot realistically eradicate Hamas.

Actually , most of the Security Council members voted AGAINST Israel this time, because of the killings of United Nations relief workers, and the bombings of UN refugee schools.

The worm has turned, now, at the United Nations.

Several nations that haven’t “chosen sides” are now calling for sanctions against Israel.

How can you create a Palestinian state when you have a sliver of land to the west and land to the east with Israel in the middle.

As someone who has been to the concentration camps and seen behind the bookcase in Anne Franks room I wonder if the Palestinians are the 21st century version of the American Indian. Except this time you have rockets and cameras to document everything.
I personally know many Palestinians and Jews.
One particular Palestinian told me the story of how the Jews came to his beautiful seaside house in the middle of the night and kicked him out saying that the bible says that Jews own this land even though the Palestinian was the rightful owner of the house he built. As he was being evicted from his house the Rabbi told him his new home was a refugee camp.
The Palestinian people are victims of a leadership that sided with the Nazi’s and after their defeat were displaced. I’m also sure Sirhan didn’t help matters for the Palestinians by changing history.

No, other Palestinians chose to live peacefully in Jordan. These Palestinians were thrown out and forced into West Bank camps after attempting to assassinate the Jordanian king. Nobody wants them, because they’re more trouble than they’re worth where other Arabs are concerned. They were given land by Israel, and they chose to shoot rockets from it. There are innocent Palestinians living in Gaza who cannot escape, but they are at Hamas’ mercy. Hamas broke the ceasefire and continues a war with Israel it knows it cannot win unless the world condemns Israel for doing what any other country in its place would do.

Besides, Isreal had agreed that they would open the borders and stop the blockade. They reneged.

I was raised by a fundamentalist mother — and every single time there was any sort of conflict in the Middle East the ministers would start their religious rant/sermons — explaining — well what you said.

Armageddon according to the fundy bible starts in the Middle East — blood flows like water — a whole lot of Jews are killed (or convert to a specific brand of Christianity) — and Christ returns (walking on all the dead bodies?????)

So yes the US religious fundamentalists are Israel’s very bestest friends — and at the same time the fundies want to see a whole lot of blood — became on of these times it will go too far — END OF THE WORLD TIME.

The fundies are looking for a “sign” of the End Times — and the whole thing starts with Israel. So in a way I guess this little tiny spot on the globe is the center of the world???

I’m not a “fundie” – does that mean Evangelical? I’m Catholic. I do know that any Christian who follows the teachings of Christ does not long for a “whole lot of blood.”

I recall a photograph from late 2002 – early 2003, an Israeli soldier had been captured by Palestinian militants. After the Palestinian captors were through with the Israeli soldier, one of them, in a fit of unmitigated bloodlust, hung outside the window of their makeshift torture chamber and proudly displayed his bloody hands, the blood had issued from the newly deceased Israeli soldier. I recall looking at this image, and wondering what level of barbarity the Israelis were dealing with.
This particular individual clearly was interested in the shedding of a whole lot of blood.

I lived in a Lebanese Christian community for a time.
I socialized with Lebanese Christians and Palestinian Christians as well. Naturally there were some Palestinian Muslims in the mix, the Arabic speaking neighborhood had their language in common, as well as some other cultural elements excepting religion.

Once a month I joined the ladies in a rosary prayer, afterwards we had Lebanese coffee and sweets. I have heard all sides of the pain that the Middle Eastern conflict has inflicted on its innocents. The community with whom I was close fled their native land and had to start fresh on foreign soil as a result.

But that doesn’t mean that I am blind to the atrocities committed on Israelis.

To assign the desire for bloodlust to one party only is just plain wrong.

Jan. 8, 2009 – Samer Badawi, the executive director of the United Palestinian Appeal (UPA), in remarks at the Palestine Center in Washington, D.C., described the horrific humanitarian conditions inside Gaza today.

Badawi reported, according to U.N. and other sources, that almost nothing, in the way of food, fuel, medical supplies and so forth is getting into Gaza. The Israelis allowed in 50 trucks of food supplies, yesterday, and 41 on Jan. 5, but this is only enough to feed 100 families for 3 days. For 1.5 million people “this is less than the proverbial drop in the bucket.” Only nine of 53 bakeries are open, because wheat shipments are not being allowed in and those nine have received no flour since Dec. 22. The U.N. Relief and Works Agency, on which 70%-80% of Gazans depend for food has been unable to distribute food since Dec. 22.

On the medical front, 11 ambulances, including 3 mobile clinics supported by UPA, have been hit by Israeli bombs, the medical staff at Al Shifa hospital have no functioning respirators, and depend on hand-operated pumps to keep people alive, only 3 of 56 health clinics scattered throughout Gaza are open, mainly due to lack of fuel, and Al Shifa hospital, itself is down to two days of fuel.

Tens of thousands of Gazans have fled to UN shelters, but those shelters are low on food, and have no access to heat or water, and there is a shortage of coats and blankets for those refugees. At least three UN shelters have been bombed, including the one yesterday that killed 40 Palestinians. Most of Gaza is without power, primarily because Israel has stopped the shipment of fuel into Gaza.

Badawi noted that this is a crisis at least 18 months in the making. The UNRWA and other agencies reported in June of 2007 that Gaza was getting 10% of the supplies it had been receiving a year earlier. “For 18 months, the people of Gaza have been subjected to a seige unlike anything since the Warsaw ghetto,” he said. He underscored this image by noting that the ratios of bomb tonnage dropped by the Israeli air force to civilian casualties makes the Israeli assault 2-3 times deadlier than the wars on Serbia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. All of this, together, makes the Hamas rocketfire into Israel “irrelevant.”

CNN GETS BURNED BY PALLYWOOD!

The story was supposedly that a freelance journalist in Gaza returned home to find his younger brother dead, the victim of a missile attack on a residential rooftop from an unmanned IDF drone. The video shows the supposed scene of the attack, and follows the Gaza family from the hospital to the burial, after a heroic attempt by doctors to revive the young child.

Only, when you look at the supposedly heroic effort, it lacks one thing: any sense that the two doctors are actually performing CPR with any effort at all. They stop as though they’ve scripted out the moment. That’s when I questioned whether the scene could have been faked, and at LGF, a physician called shenanigans:

I’m no military expert, but I am a doctor, and this video is bullsh-t. The chest compressions that were being performed at the beginning of this video were absolutely, positively fake. The large man in the white coat was NOT performing CPR on that child. He was just sort of tapping on the child’s sternum a little bit with his fingers. You can’t make blood flow like that. Furthermore, there’s no point in doing chest compressions if you’re not also ventilating the patient somehow. In this video, I can’t tell for sure if the patient has an endotracheal tube in place, but you can see that there is nobody bag-ventilating him (a bag is actually hanging by the head of the bed), and there is no ventilator attached to the patient. In a hospital, during a code on a ventilated patient, somebody would probably be bagging the patient during the chest compressions. And they also would have moved the bed away from the wall, so that somebody could get back there to intubate the patient and/or bag him. In short, the “resuscitation scene” at the beginning is fake, and it’s a pretty lame fake at that.

A little more investigation determined that one of the doctors in the video is notorious terrorist apologist Mads Gilbert. The older brother, meanwhile, is no mere “free-lance cameraman” but the owner of a business that hosts Internet web sites for Hamas. In other words, this looks an awful attempt at propaganda that only a “professional” media outlet with a pre-existing animus to Israel would put on the air without any checking of sources.

CNN has pulled the video from its rotation and its web site, without any explanation or retraction. We’ll see if they own up to their mistake, or simply hope no one notices.

According to testimonies gathered by the UN, Israeli soldiers evacuation about 110 Palestinians (women and children) to a single-storey house in Zeitoun, south-east Gaza. The evacuees were instructed to stay indoors for their safety, but 24 hours later the Israeli army shelled the house. The report also complains that the Israeli Defence Force prevented medical teams from entering the area to evacuate the wounded.”
