You were being neither folksy nor colloquial. You made mistakes.

You also said that you are an English major. Did you mean were? Most people who hold degrees in a field no longer consider themselves to be majors in that field. We’ve established that you have problems with number and case. Do you also have problems with tense?

By the way, the OED has accepted the usage of the word coronate as a verb since 1860. It was first recorded in the 17th century.

If you don’t like the word, don’t use it. You may have a relatives distinguished in matters of linguistics, but such knowledge is not genetically transmitted. Please don’t presume to correct your betters until you’ve gained at least a modicum of expertise.

OIAF – At the risk of being whipped by your sharp tongue, I have to defend Land of Lincoln! Born a Brit, I never, ever heard the use of “coronate”. Queen EII was crowned, not coronated, when I watched the whole thing as a kid in Merrie Olde England (first time I ever saw TV!) Since my adopted country (so far)has not become a monarchy, I think we have a bit more experience with that sort of thing. One of my favorite hymns at school was “Crown him, crown him, crown him, crown him Lord of all”.

As for Susan, of course we all appreciate what you do. That’s why I didn’t really like that the first post was some SNARK about how you don’t really get the English language, when in fact you were right all along. I find that stuff rather ungrateful, but that’s just me.

Well, that’s a hell of a way to begin comments in a post I worked hard on. Thanks a lot for appreciating what I did late last night when I was so tired I could hardly see straight, but wanted to be sure to get this story up.

(I had a hundred other things to do here yesterday too — putting up radio shows, editing others’ stories, communicating with show hosts + writers, writing an earlier story, researching for another story, hunting for people’s comments who got lost in the spam filter, putting some people on moderation, hunting for MORE people’s comments who got stuck in the annoying spam filter, downloading new software, looking up new plug-ins for the blog, and checking the advertising and adding several new ads. And those are just the highlights.)
