Well, Golly Gee, Anne, That Will Learn Him!

As in Anne Hathaway, an actress I actually like, and one whose movies I have seen (yes, both Princess Diaries – what’s your point??!). She has taken such a strong stand, I am sure you will agree, on an important issue. Oh, yes – I am talking, of course, about her decision to NOT turn her back on Rick Warren during The One’s Coronation. Oh, SNAP, Anne! Way to stand up for what you believe in – so courageous and brave!! You go, girl!!

Oh, wait – sorry, I am getting ahead of myself now. See, there was this article on Sunday, Anne Hathaway Against Rick Warren, But Won’t Turn Back On Him at Inauguration.

Now, in case you somehow missed it reading your issue of People or OK! or wherever it is they have this kind of info, Ms. Hathaway is a big Obama supporter.

What a SURPRISE! Not. Well, she was mighty upset at him over his choice of Pastor Rick Warren to play an important role in the Coronation. Here’s what she had to say about this offensive choice, along with the generous set-up by the author of the article:

Hathaway is also proving to be incredibly articulate, and, as the year passed, politicized in a way that puts her in the legacy of Jane Fonda and Susan Sarandon. She speaks her mind about issues she feels passionately about.

One of them is Barack Obama—whom she backed—and his choice of Rick Warren as the Obama Inauguration’s clergy of choice.

“I am against it,” Hathaway told me at the after party last night amid champagne toasts to her, to Streep, and to her “Rachel” co-star Rosemarie Dewitt. “My older brother is gay, and so its a family issue for me. My father is coming with me to the Inauguration. At first we discussed not going, and then we thought we’d just turn our backs when he [Warren] speaks. But we didn’t want to be disrespectful. So we’re going to wear ribbons protesting his appearance.”

So she’s outspoken, and polite. That’s a combination you can’t beat.

Wowie freakin’ zowie, Anne – you are practically another Norma Rae, I tell ya! Way to stand up to the man, especially in solidarity with your gay brother! Hell to the yeah, wear that ribbon! That oughta learn Obama that you are not happy with his choice of YET ANOTHER homophobe for the big occasion! Of course, it isn’t stopping you from GOING, or from supporting him in the FIRST place, this misogynistic homophobe who has surrounded himself with anti-gay, anti-choice men at EVERY turn.

I don’t know about your brother, but speaking for me only, I gotta tell you, it just does not feel like a whole lot of support. If someone consistently surrounds himself with actively anti-gay people, it should tell you something about him. And if all you do is make excuses for him, or protest by wearing a ribbon while still participating in his Coronation, well, that has about ZERO impact. But you just go ahead and tell yourself you are taking a stand while still participating in the event. Oh, yeah – that’ll sure learn ‘em, as we say down here in the South. Power to the people!

I cannot even begin to tell you how sick and tired I am of this. People who claim to care about GLBT issues and rights, who have family members who are GLBT, or even GLBT people themselves who continue to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to who Obama really is. What the HELL is it going to take to get through to you? He does not give a DAMN about the GLBT community. If he DID, he would not associate with The IL Senator Rev. James Meeks, who is rabidly anti-gay . Or Donnie “God Delivered Me From Homosexuality” McClurkin. Or Doug “Hell No, You Gay People Can’t Marry!” Kmiec. Or invite one of the big haters of Gay people – Rick Warren – a man who will not even allow us into his CHURCH – to be up front and center in his Big Event. Or who chooses Tim Kaine, another big time gay hater, to be THE CHAIR OF THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE, the very party the GLBT community has, by and large, supported.

Oh, that’s not a slap in the face or an affront at all!! Oh, and Ladies – both Warren and Kaine don’t think you should be able to choose what happens to your own body your self either! What a GREAT feminist minded guy he is! Treats women like crap in the open for eighteen months, and yet still is lauded as being a FEMINIST by Ms. Magazine! That is just obscene.

And yes, I have heard that The Right Rev. Gene Robinson has now been asked to give an invocation at a Sunday night Lincoln Memorial Inaugural event. Oh, well, that just makes EVERYTHING okay now, doesn’t it? A last minute addition to an event that is not exactly the main event will make all of us gay people all of a sudden forget that Obama chose a rabidly homophobic, misogynist to be on the Main Stage. Oh, yes, I am so thankful for this crumb dropped from the table. Maybe Obama isn’t such a hater after all, right?

Freaking spare me already. I have had it. Sorry if I am being pissy, but this is just sheer stupidity. Yes, I said it. At what point are his followers EVER going to hold him accountable?? EVER??? This is like the people who thought George Bush could do no wrong no matter WHAT he did – the refusal to join the “reality-based community” is just as strong among the Obama supporters as it was for the Bush supporters. You know, the same ones we ridiculed. Enough already. Stop with the excuses. Stop the denial. And stop pretending that wearing a little ribbon will make any difference to the issue at hand – Obama’s homophobia. Here’s a newsflash: Obama is not the Saint you created him to be.

Frankly, Warren and Kaine are not all that different from Ken Blackwell, the potential RNC Chair, who said, “Homosexuality is a compulsion that can be contained, repressed or changed.” Please tell me why that is any more unacceptable than the crap Warren spews about unrepentant gays not being allowed to attend his church, and equates us to pedophiles and incest perpetrators. Or Kaine spewing this:

Marriage between a man and a woman is the building block of the family and a keystone of our civil society. It has been so for centuries in societies around the world. I cannot agree with a court decision suddenly declaring that marriage must now be redefined to include unions between people of the same gender.

Or this:

And finally in the area of adoption. Virginia has adoption laws right now that I agree with. The adoption laws say the only couple that is allowed to adopt is a married couple.

I’m just saying – not a whole helluva lot of difference there.

Here’s the deal: no amount of ribbons are going to change who Obama really is, Anne. He is a homophobe who surrounds himself with homophobes. And don’t tell me that this is just one issue among many. This is not an “issue” – it is my LIFE. Just as being a woman is not an issue, but my LIFE. Who Obama chooses to elevate is telling, telling indeed. That is the reality.

It is WAY past time for his followers to come back to the reality-based community and take a good, hard look at the man who was given the Democratic Nomination while they covered their eyes and ears, no matter how much we tried to tell them who he really was. Because let me tell you something – Hillary Clinton would never in a bazillion years pick someone so offensive to women and GLBT people. She NEVER would have appointed an anti-gay, anti-choice man to be Chair of the DNC. So when you stood by, and allowed the RBC/DNC to engage in vote theft, when you stood by while Obama engaged in caucus fraud, when you stood by while ACORN engaged in rampant voter fraud, you gave your tacit approval to Obama’s homophobia and misogyny.

Stop turning your back on THAT, and FACE the reality of what you have done.

These naive Obama cultists will overlook anything.Check out how many of them are defending his having dinner last night with a bunch of crackpot neocons – Kristol, Krauthammer, Kudlow, Lowry among others – at George Will’s $19 million house last night. Even at the Huff Post and DailyKos commenters are defending this.
How stupid can you get? The neocons finally have lost all credibilty after Bush’s implementation of both their extremist free market ideology and their “muscular” foreign policy has driven our country and the rest of the world into a ditch. Obama deigning to dine with them only helps restore legitimacy to these dangerous radicals. Next thing you know Obama will join PNAC.

John Batchelor at Daily Beast gets it right:
“The only credible explanation for the dinner party heard ’round the world is that Mr. Obama believes his personality is more substantial than his politics. That he believes charm, soft words, candlelight, good wine, and stagey entrances will overpower ideas, ideology, and partisanship.”

    Good luck with that.

  • CarolynKB

She doesn’t “want to offend anybody”? How Sweet and DUPLICITIOUS! Never mind that Rick Warren offends the LGBT community with his comparison of our relationships to bestiality and pedophilia, we should “respect” him, for what? Another act of COWARDICE bootlicking by pretenders.

  • Honora

I guess that Obama figures that he was able to win over Michelle, the media and the DNC with ‘charm’ and no substance, how much harder can leading the free world be??

  • tek

I guess the ‘bots are prepared to forgive him anything–he’s so “young” and hip, not like those terrible Clintons whose whole administration he’s stealing.

Altogether now, say: JUST LIKE BUSH!

  • tek

Oh, and some big fashion guru out in L. A. should tell Anne Hathaway that dirty, greased down hair does not compliment an evening gown.

Also, isn’t this the girl who got duped by some corrupt Italian businessman who’s now in jail? Just sayin’

  • tek

BernieO: OMG! He didn’t have dinner with Kristol? OMG! I mean, if it were credible statesmen from the opposition that would be different. I always believed the neoCons and the corps wanted this guy in office. This proves it. They all hated the Clintons because Bill implemented real democracy–guess the far left is down on democracy as well.

The only explanation for it is that this guy just loves luxury and fawning attention. I have never seen a PE who is so susceptible to trappings of wealth.

  • jbjd

When I was little, I learned about the Holocaust. I remember thinking back then, Hitler didn’t kill 11 million people; thousands did. And most of them did this by just standing by. BO is only one person; he could never have achieved his sinister standing except in concert with hundreds of enablers and millions of people who know he does not belong in the White House but are just standing by.

As for this actress…clearly, being able to say she is attending the inauguration is clearly more important to her than announcing she cannot attend in respect for her brother. (I wonder what rationalization he will invent to excuse his sister’s priorities.)

perhaps there are some “women” who get turned on by BIG ALFRED E NEw?MAN EARS – just like mad magazine the flip side of the gw coin with the ears and monkey grin

    freaky
    scary
    quite unsettling actually

  • BernieO

Oh yes, he did! I think Batchelor’s explanation makes the most sense:

“The only credible explanation for the dinner party heard ’round the world is that Mr. Obama believes his personality is more substantial than his politics. That he believes charm, soft words, candlelight, good wine, and stagey entrances will overpower ideas, ideology, and partisanship.”

That also explains his choice of Warren. What he actually is doing is conferring legitimacy on the beliefs of these losers. While I don’t think he should be rude or refuse to ever listen to anything opponents say, choosing them to play a role in your inauguration or going out of your way to confer with them only gives them more influence at a time when the voters have finally rejected their worldview.

Not to mention, Will is as dishonest as they come. On George Snuffleupagus’ Sunday show a couple of weeks ago Will repeated the lie that FDR did nothing to get us out of the depression, that WWII did the job. When Krugman, who was also there, corrected his statement by pointing out that the economy was coming out of the depression when FDR was talked into cutting back spending in ’37, leading to another, but milder downturn. Even then, the economy was far better off than it had been when FDR took office. Krugman said FDR took us halfway out of the depression and the war finished the job. Will did not answer because he knew Krugman was right, yet the next week he repeated his lies in his WPost column.

I kept wondering if this spin was actually a way for the neocons to advocate for more military spending. Sure enough, last Sunday on Chris Wallace’s show Kristol made the point that it was spending on the military that ended the Depression and that we should spend a big chuck of the stimulus on the military because the military knows how to spend government money well!!!

Why would any thinking person waste an entire evening sucking up to these dishonest nutjobs?

  • BernieO

I did not intend to make the whole comment in bold type, but maybe that is appropriate?

  • I’m a Linda too

Well said. They instead are all just turning their back on REALITY.

  • C.S.

At first we discussed not going, and then we thought we’d just turn our backs when he [Warren] speaks. But we didn’t want to be disrespectful. So we’re going to wear ribbons protesting his appearance.

Obviously Ms. Hathaway doesn’t fill her pretty little head with all sorts of facts and figurers that might mar her smooth brow from thinking. You may as well not protest if no one knows you are protesting, or if your “sign” is so small that they have to lean in to see what you are protesting.

And didn’t it occur to her, while doing all this deep dithering on how to tell Barack Obama he had insulted her family, that he obviously didn’t mind being disrespectful to the guests he invited to his party to celebrate himself.

If she didn’t want to be”disrespectful” she should have just sent a polite note declining the invitation. And if she wanted him to know why, she could have been more forceful and said, “No way will I show up if you invited those nut cases!” (Imagine the statement of arrogant Obama talking to himself and Michelle in an empty amphitheater.)

If there was a true will, Hathaway would have found a way. After all, she found the will to make herself a star..

Lincoln did try to work with some in the opposition party. That’s a good thing. However, he did not kowtow to those opposed to his views.

Lincoln also knew when it was time to fish and cut bait.

There’s a difference between listening to others views and inviting the devil to dine. I’m not sure Obama knows the difference.

“I favor legalizing same-sex marriages, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.”

    Barack Obama, 1996

Now you see it, now you don’t. The Magician/Messiah Believes Whatever He Thinks Will Get Him Through the Night!

Via Ben Smith, the Windy City Times rifles through some old file cabinets and strikes gold. Such was The One’s flip-flopping during the campaign (especially on this subject) that I couldn’t remember at first if we already knew this or not. Initially I thought we did, then realized that I was confusing this new questionnaire with a different questionnaire that he also filled out in 1996.

Remember that one? Where he said he supported a total handgun ban, then claimed to Politico that a staffer had filled out the document unknowingly on his behalf, then got caught lying because a second copy showed his handwritten revisions on the document?

    Good times.

Anyway, this one’s different. And we did, sort of, already know it was true:

The Windy City Times reported in October that its 1996 election guide listed Obama as pro-gay marriage, but since the questionnaire on which it was based had been lost, there was a chance they’d simply misinterpreted his position.

Well, now it’s been found; see for yourself how unambiguous it was.

In fact, read the whole piece, not just because it incorporates a second questionnaire where he reemphasizes his willingness to support a gay marriage resolution (see question 7) but because the author interviewed him in 2004 and found his objections to GM to be more strategic than religious, as they supposedly are now.

Exit question: Pretend for a minute that there’s more to Obama’s thinking on this than naked political expedience. Why, precisely, have his views grown more conservative over time? And why, as I asked once before, is he letting his religious objection dictate his policy position when he’s explicitly rejected that sort of reasoning in the past?

And yeah – how abt that 1996 story? I saw that last night. You just cannot make this stuff up, you know? Add that to Bernie O’s comment abt Obama’s dinner last night, and it is clear he will do/say/be whatever anyone wants him to be.

Well, Rev. Amy, since you brought it up, here’s some details regarding the new Obama Channel on Comcast:

Leading up to Inauguration, the channel will offer a number of Obama-related programs, according to a release: “Barack Obama’s most famous speeches to date, from his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 through his election night victory speech in Grant Park; Barack Obama biography; Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic National Convention speech; a tour of the White House; and the history of Air Force One.”

Pretty exciting, huh? Now since Comcast never does anything without $$$ in mind, I wonder who is paying the bills for the new channel?

  • MrMike

The Obama show? Will we see him brush his teeth? Will they cut to a commercial when he drops a dookie or does the nasty?

I too enjoy the mental gymnastics of progressive America, but how does nationalization of banks counts as “extremist free market ideology”?

Its more like “extreme populist ideology” to me in the vein of national socialist democratic ideals. Just a random hodgepodge of whatever gets you to the top and your friends richer.

Bush and Obama are very similar to my view, but unfortunately Mr. Obama is packing the powerful race card and knows how to play it. I feel we will be saddled with him for a good long time.

Thank you for this, Amy. Another great post. Ms. Hathaway does not seem to be able to stand strong enough o take her out of the “I’m still cool” category which is as sad as it is hypocritical — if I had a Gay brother, you can be damned sure I would decline an invitation to this inaugural farce with Rick Warren speaking there.

She actually has a pulpit to say something meaningful and has wasted it. And grossly disrespected a loved one to the bargain.

  • bayareavoter

Rev Amy–I love reading your posts!

BO cares only for BO. Period.

The reason he invited Warren to the inauguration and had dinner with the neocons is that he is already campaigning for 2012. He is courting those votes. And he knows that he can spin it as new politics of meeting with the “other side” but that’s bs and we know it.

As I read the other day–this is not “change”; this is exactly what Bill Clinton did: work across the aisle and real progressives were po’ed that he made so many compromises.

  • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

Where were these women celebrities when Hillary was getting shafted? They are disgraceful.

  • http://www.hillaryorbust.com Hillary or Bust

I believe Obama is actually one of the neocons and got into power with their help.

  • Thinker

    I like Anne Hathaway.

And I actually think that while her response is pretty tame by out outspoken standards at NQ, it took a certain amount of guts for her to say ANYTHING at all!! So many of her peers have remained silent. Where is someone like Rosie O? She runs her mouth about everything but she is strangely silent.

The folks on this site are critical thinkers.

But we are not the norm in American society right now.

So many of our mothers, grandmothers, cousins, ex-boyfriend, ex friends who are gay have fallen for the Obama lie, and that one is extremely popular right now.

For an actress that is just now starting her career to speak out against him in a forceful way will invite criticism from the press, etc. I think Anne wanted to speak out, but she also has to keep her career in mind.

She said SOMETHING, which is more than what these Hollywood stars are doing right now. They are looking the other way.

Anne said what she had to say, her career will live to see another day and Barack Obama is a fraud that will get exposed very soon. It’s not Anne’s job to single handedly take down Barack Obama. Maybe if more of her peers where to chime in also, we would see strength in numbers.
    Kd Lang?
    Madonna?
    Ellen?
    Elton John?

They are always talking about gay rights but don’t say shit about what Obama is doing.

    Give Anne some credit.

  • Ani

Obviously, some of them believed this Samantha Power b.s. of “Hillary is a monster.”

There were numberous exceptions, however, who were loyal to and campaigned for Hillary — America Ferrara, Mary Steenbergen, Fran Drescher, Eva Longoria… to name a few.

  • Ani

    numerous…sorry for the typo.

  • Thinker

Also, I have a strong sense of intuition, and I’m willing to be anyone a million bucks that when Obama is finally exposed as a fraud for all of the world to see, we will then hear more & more Hollywood types speaking out against the things that he has done, & you mark my words, Anne Hathaway will be seen as someone who was willing to speak out against him when it wasn’t popular to do so, even if it wasn’t “forceful enough” by some people’s standards. Because once again, she could have remained silent, just like her peers, but she didn’t.

    :)

Perhaps Anne blogs at this site:

    http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/

Does anyone know if this site is serious? It appears to be. It’s downright pathetic, bordering on blasphemous. Then again, pathetic describes most celebrities, too.

  • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Thanks, y’all! :-) And thanks for the great comments!

Thinker, I must respectfully disagree with your assessment of the risk Anne is taking (and I said from the get-go that I like her movies). It is not that difficult to take a stand when the stand one is taking looks pretty much like what the person was going to do ANYWAY. The only thing that has changed is that she will wear a ribbon, and she had the “audacity” to say she was upset with Obama’s choice. But even her comments were not all that forceful, “I’m against it.”

And you are right – she DOES have a platform, so why isn’t she doing more with it???

I do appreciate your comment, though I think if it WAS someone like Rosie or Ellen, people would simply expect that and dismiss it. Know what I mean? But until our straight family/friends are wiling to actually risk something, or give up something, it doesn’t help to just say, “Gee, this makes me a little mad, but I’m going anyway, and I still support Obama even though he picks people like this.”

    Just sayin’.

  • JozefAL

Thinker, k d lang is Canadian, so I don’t believe she’s too liable to discuss American politics and I don’t recall hearing or reading anything from her or about her taking a stance regarding last year’s elections.
You may be thinking of Melissa Etheridge. She’s American and a very open lesbian AND was a strong booster of Obama’s from fairly early on. (She was also supposed to perform, or was expecting to be asked to perform, at Obama’s inauguration, but I haven’t heard anything about her doing so since the Warren controversy came up.)

  • NoBamaNoWay

IMO, anyone who supported obama doesn’t get the right to protest warren. if they want to turn their backs on someone, turn them on obama. not that it will do any good; obama’s accountability moment came on nov. 4, and his supporters told him that there will be no accountability.
