He got a W-2, but was still responsible for self-employment taxes. That's a special thing about working for certain international organizations like IMF. That's also why the IRS, in response to a lot of people getting tripped up by this, in 2006 and 2007 decided to waive penalties for <em>any</em> employees of certain international organizations who paid these taxes late. He didn’t get a 1099. He got a W-2, but was still responsible for self-employment taxes. That’s a special thing about working for certain international organizations like IMF.
