I love that story too, WetHornet. Cracks me up every time -- also makes my heart sink. If Bush's people had listened to a true expert like Pat, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in, or have wasted so many lives and incalculable treasure.

Pat is an excellent writer, one of those who can write very clear dissections of current affairs and can also write lyrical prose. His blog is a must-stop for me.

few items:

1) i'll toss this out there. i have read some of pat's historical fiction writings. and to this lover of good prose, as well as good historical fiction...they are a pure delight.

2) i know someone who has worked with pat for the u.s. gvt. on middle east stuff at the highest levels over the decades and this person -- who is top notch -- has the great respect for pat.

3) no one should ever forget, and it should be told often, one of the most infamous anecdotes of "operation clusterf*ck," aka, iraq. don't know what job he was seeking, but pat interviewed with doug feith. whom we'll recall gen. tommy-medal-of-freedom-franks said was the dumbest motherfletcher on the face of the planet. part of the interview went thusly:
DF: "so, i see you're fluent in arabic?"
PL: "yes sir."
DF: "too bad."
actual conversation. or, as the great humorist dave barry would say, "i'm not making this up."

pat didn't get the job.

imho, you can't tell that anecdote too many times.

Larry, I sure would like to get him down here in my turf to give me a good run thought too....I live in TN and have been to the battle grounds and seen the markers for different states and the infantry they belong to. It is very interesting to see these markers and the little write ups of them...I am thinking about buying this book for the simple fact I think it will be fun to read. A lot of history around the TN river is a good place someday to visit.

Vicksburg, MS is a good place too for the history of the Civil War. To look down from the bluffs and see the river that they chose to do battles on is a good place for history.

I've had the privilege of visiting three civil war battlefields with Pat. Sure as hell beats wearing a headset. Plus he's far more entertaining (and knowledgeable). I look forward to reading the whole book while holding it in my hands.

Thank you. And Amazon is how we support this blog. (Besides the advertising -- btw, CLICK on the new ad that's up for THE ISSUE. If we get good results, we'll get more ads.)

I too have had good experiences with Amazon. Because of my hip surgery, I can't bend over to sweep into a dust bin, and I found a long-handled dust bin at Amazon -- there were many to choose from, and I picked the one that had 5 stars from customers. When I got it, it was missing a part. I called the merchant, and they immediately sent me another one + an additional missing part, so now I have TWO long-handled dust bins (someone's getting the other for C'mas).

(Besides the advertising — btw, CLICK on the new ad that’s up for THE ISSUE. If we get good results, we’ll get more ads.)

I too have had good experiences with Amazon. Because of my hip surgery, I can’t bend over to sweep into a dust bin, and I found a long-handled dust bin at Amazon — there were many to choose from, and I picked the one that had 5 stars from customers. When I got it, it was missing a part. I called the merchant, and they immediately sent me another one + an additional missing part, so now I have TWO long-handled dust bins (someone’s getting the other for C’mas).

I have bought dozens of books (American history and politics geek who is a community college prof. here) through Amazon's program for smaller sellers. Never had a problem nor a bad experience, in fact all to the good, so thanks for saying what you said.

Pat's book is available through Amazon or Barnes & Noble, via his Web site.

Your points are all good sentiments. And, when I'm able to get out, I make a point of buying from a local bookstore once in a while. (In this town of 20,000, we have two thriving small bookstores that are well-supported by the community, and thankfully no "big box" bookstores that compete with them.)

I once worked hard on a blog for which we made the decision to go with Powell's bookstore (in Portland, Oregon) rather than Amazon -- Powell's isn't a tiny mom 'n pop but an independent bookstore nonetheless. Thing is, their books sell for $3 to $12+ more than Amazon's. A lot of people would view our recommendations, then go to Amazon to buy them for many dollars less.

At that other blog, I also set up accounts and ads with even smaller retailers -- one was called Alibris, and it's a lovely online bookstore with very reliable service -- that sometimes had better deals than Powell's or Amazon, but our blog readers never bought anything from them. Dunno why not.

Also: Amazon provides a major venue for very small businesses to sell their products ... all the "used" books you buy via Amazon are typically sold by sole or very small proprietorships. Those are people who have home businesses typically.

Do most of us buy groceries in major supermarkets owned by huge corporations, or do we only shop at small mom 'n pops?

I buy my special cat food through Amazon -- and it comes from a small company in Illinois (Evanger's) and is never sold in ANY U.S. grocery stores because it's not a mass-produced product with cheap or "offal" ingredients. It contains only the best meat, and mostly organic at that. I cannot buy that high quality cat food anywhere near me -- I'd have to drive 100 miles to get it.

I also get Bob's Red Mill products via Amazon. Bob's Red MIll is a small company in Oregon that makes and packages hot and cold cereals, all kinds of flour, raisins, nuts, seeds, and more. Its ingredients almost all come from U.S.-only farms. Its hazelnuts -- to die for, they're so yummy -- are grown in Oregon.

What's the reason I get Bob's Red Mill through Amazon? At all the local markets, they carry very few of the company's selections ... via Amazon, I can order every single item that Bob makes.

(The first time I shopped for Bob's Red Mill's products at Amazon, itt was mind-blowing -- I had no idea that Bob's produced such a rich array of cereals, flour, nuts and dried fruits since I'd never seen them on a shelf in any store.)

I see your point, and used to agree with you. But since Amazon has given small businesses a way to reach millions of customers, it's not all bad.

(Then there's the ease of using Amazon's Web site, better than any I've ever shopped at.)

So I am listening to Bush say he does not want Iran to have the knowledege of how to build a Nuke.
sorry cats out of the bag.

I googled "How to build a nuclear weapon"...and got
2,130,000 hits...OK I know! ....it is a very difficult thing to do...so is climbing Mt. Denali.

I'm sure that world wide espionage is always "full speed ahead" regarding WMD and the next time Cheney sends a letter, it won't be from Italy.

So when the new engine designs for the space shuttle get hacked from a NASA computer, at a loss of billions of dollars in R&D (you name what ever high tech designs you want) it is amazing that we assume joining the club can't be done by a country with educated intelligent people such as Iran.

It blows my mind that people think an NIE, no matter how much it exposes the Bush dictatorships' lies, will stop these end timers from doing exactly what they want.
Hell's Bells!! They are going to kick this Iran can down the road to the next admin as well. I know our Intel folks deserve much in recognition and public support but if any disagrees with me then explain why they outed Valerie! Bottomline is they dont give a damn 'cause they are doing it anyway.

Sorry mudkitty 60 votes don't mean jack at the moment.
