Obama, Favreau, and Hillary at State

This is an post I wrote a couple weeks ago–before the inauguration–discussing Hillary’s role in the new Administration. As Susan and Ani note, Hillary has been busy. As a whole host of issues arising from potential discussions with Iran where competing players will be jockeying for position (such as Susan Rice) we will get a better picture of the precise role Hillary will play and her influence when others are involved. From the work already done by Hillary, I hope that my early concerns prove to be unwarranted.

As I saw Hillary during her confirmation hearing, I was once again impressed by her depth and breadth of knowledge. I definitely feel confident in her abilities and competency, but I’m not entirely sure that will be enough for her to be an effective Secretary of State. Why? Two words: Jon Favreau.

Why does Jon Favreau still bother me? As Pat Racimora points out, Obama has not shied away from discarding previous friends and mentors when their politically embarrassing behavior became public. I don’t want to rehash the argument on Obama’s character for tossing out his old friends, but I find it glaring that he essentially gave a free pass to Favreau on this issue, appointing him director of White House Speech Writing

Now that the election is over, Obama may not see a need to abandon allies anymore. Or the non action on Favreau could be a signal of something else. It’s clear that his supporters and high level advisers have negative views of Hillary so its reasonable to ask just how widespread the “dehumanizing” view of Hillary is amongst Obama’s team and with Obama himself. To be sure, Obama’s appointment of Hillary as Secretary of State may, in fact, be an indication that he truly values her input on foreign policy and that his campaign largely built upon ridicule of Hillary’s judgment on foreign policy was just a ruse. But the fact that a strong rebuke of Favreau was not readily made publicly I have my concerns. Additionally, if you wanted to silence the one person with a following bigger than you, the best way to make them disappear is to send them abroad.

In addition to how Obama views Hillary, its also important to ask if Obama’s non reproof will negatively impact Hillary’s position as the chief US diplomat. Here, I think Anglachel says it succinctly:

To allow this image of her being treated with disrespect by a close associate of the president, someone who appears to be on track as a member of the administration, says two things to the nations and diplomats she will engage:
1. Go ahead, piss on her. We do.

2. We don’t respect you enough to send someone we respect to treat with you.

Had this photo come out during the campaign, it could have been kept an individual matter, dimissed (however disingenuously) as the unfortunate side effect of a highly competitive contest. But now Hillary has been named Secretary of State and the revelation of the contempt under these circumstances carries a different meaning. This image is no longer about her.

Even if Obama sees Hillary as more than a “monster”, the lack of a swift and strong response has the potential to inadvertently hinder Hillary’s ability to perform her duties.

We will soon find out what role Obama plans to give Hillary as she starts taking on the responsibilities. For our sake, I hope that Obama does value Hillary and that it will be more than clear that she is an important member of his administration.

By keeping this misogynist in the administration Obama is announcing far and wide that he not only disrespects Hillary, but ALL women. He has to know that this know it all little twerp,(Favreau), is despised by most women – he just doesn’t care. Now that he used the kool-aid drinking women to get elected he is telling them they are no longer needed. Sound familiar? Brazile?

I don’t believe it will be long before Susan Rice will begin to invade Hillary’s territory. It will be interesting to see who gets Obama’s support.

  • madamsecretaryofstatehrc

My first posting on this site, found it during the election cycle.

It is amazing that just this morning on the radio, I heard one person intimating that Hillary was not his first choice to become SOS. In such a derogatory way that I had to shout at the radio. Yea, silly, I know. But these people won and yet they do not know how to be gracious. Small minds all around.

We will be watching closely to see what will happen to Hillary.

  • wodiej

BO/Jon Favreau-you are judged by the company you keep.

  • Bonnie Stepenoff

I can’t tell you how grateful I am to know that some people out there are sensitive to this demeaning treatment of Secretary Clinton by a man who now holds an even higher position in Obama’s circles. Most of my friends and relatives (in fact, all of them) either do not know about it or do not care. This is shocking to me.

  • ConcernedLib

At first I thought this post was all about that stupid picture with the cardboard cut out! Can you imagine writing such a serious post, discussing our national security and negotiations with Iran, in the context of that meaningless picture! I mean seriously, people were actually really upset, but it was obviously a joke, and is no different from the jokes we all know Hillary makes behind closed doors about Obama, or Bill. She’s a grown woman and doesn’t need a weepy internet fan club to defend her. The fact is, even incredibly talented 27 year olds act like 27 year olds sometimes. Btw, what did he do this time to warrant this post, I must have missed it….

  • OldCoastie

I think Hillary’s role is to do all the work with none of the credit and to take all the blame if anything should go wrong…

it’s just as simple as that.

  • Oisafraud

Anyone knows where Joe Biden is hiding this days….?

  • susan h

So what if Hillary was not his first choice. That just shows HIS stupidity even more. Biden was not Obama’s first choice for VP, in fact I remember 3 or 4 qualified people turned him down (Evan Bayh, Ed Rendell, and several others said unequivocally NO to Obama as V.P. choice). So Joe Biden gladly accepted it and that does not make him any less for doing so. Likewise, Hillary is a great pick and if Obama will let her do her job, she will be a voice of reason and greatness around the world. We have yet to see what Obama’s real agendas are around the world. This newest ploy to give a speech to Muslims on Muslim soil (what propoganda will we be told about this? Probably that Muslims then love us since Obama is on the scene) makes me cringe. It is no different than the phony set-ups he did in Europe and other places during his campaign, pretending people were there to see him and loved him and bowed down to him. Not unlike his propoganda train ride following Abraham Lincoln’s route to Washington. I wonder if Steven Spielberg is on the payroll setting up Hollywood type events (oh excuse me, that must have been Otto Premminger in the background) with a cast of thousands. More smoke and mirrors from Obama-land.

  • candymarl

“We all know”? How do we “know” if we are not behind said closed doors?

Good grief. The post is about a public act with pictures.

You compare it with conjecture about what someone might have said behind closed doors?

    This country is in trouble.

  • candymarl

In addition if the 27 y/o is not mature enough to act responsibly in public why does he have the job?

  • oowawa

The fact is, even incredibly talented 27 year olds act like 27 year olds sometimes.

Boys will be boys. (chuckle) God bless ‘em.

  • Judy L. NC

Welcome aboard the Good Ship NQ!

  • Judy L. NC

ConcernedLib, you are a condescending SOB.

  • BernieO

Obama has made such a public demonstration of supporting Hillary – even going to State with her – that he will look foolish if he then undercuts her. Besides I have a feeling Hillary is such an experienced political player that Rice and Favreau are overmatched. Not to mention Rice does not have the same prestige internationally so is not likely to have anything like the clout Hillary will have in getting cooperation.
I keep thinking that Obama must have been extremely impressed by Hillary once he took the time to get to know her instead of seeing her as a rival. Bill too. After all she won over the hardline Republicans in the Senate. If she can do that, I think she can handle these neophytes.

  • (trying to get over it)

    incredibly talented?

were you listening to that mediocre inauguration speech? favreau is a hack — his slippery speechwriting makes well-educated adults queasy.

  • wodiej

boys will be boys?? No wonder they treat women like shit with that kind of approval.

  • Sassy

With the serious issues that have to be dealt with around the globe, only an idiot would undermine SOS, no matter who is in that office!
That said, BO is fully capable of pulling it off!

  • Chris Martin

Is it really hard to see how Hillary’s standing in the administration affects serious issues like Iran? Really?

  • ConcernedLib

So you guys really do care about that picture?????? Wow, talk about fiddling as Rome burns. I have close friends who were inside the Hillary campaign, and trust me the jokes got way nastier than that ridiculous picture. I’m sorry you guys have never been to a party, but that’s what people, even mature adults, do at parties when they are having fun and there’s a cardboard cut out around. That was not a public picture put out by anybody, it was posted on someone’s myspace and then latched onto by people desperate for even the smallest thing that could continue to fuel their temper tantrums and feelings of persecution. If Hillary doesn’t care, and the world at large doesn’t care, why do you? Is it because if furthers your bitter agenda?

  • Mercedes

Maybe Hillary was not Obama’s choice at all for SOS, but he had to reach an agreement with her. Afterall, she had more popular votes than he did and, if anyone realizes how he defrauded her out of the nomination, he does. He needs her on his side. Right now, he seems to be behaving like other politicians coming into office. Be as nice as possible to everyone, build up political capital, then lower the boom when the time is right. This oversight with Mr Favreau is perhaps a sign of his arrogance, and it seems to fall in the same category as his shoulder brushing, finger flipping routine. Well, some of those old adages are quite true. Pride DOES cometh before the fall. Who knows what Mr Fitzgerald has dug up on Obama and friends? Who knows what nasty, little secrets are waiting to be unveiled. Somebody needs to have a tight hold on the reins.

  • Jude

Oh Lib, you are soooo right. It’s really funny, that degradation. Right up there with stoning women in Afghanistan or using alcohol and drugs to date rape in America.

You know what else is really funny and charming? The O-bots “Little Blue Book”. Just like Mao’s Little Red Book.

Yes, it is hysterical that Obamaphiles have no sense of history or gravity of their actions. Just wait til some Arab throws a shoe at the Dear Leader. I’m sure you will see that for it’s inherent humor also.

Ignorance must truly be bliss. Hiding behind HRC, saying that those kind of antics went on in her campaign also, is truly the height of insulting our intelligence. HRC couldn’t make historically correct comments without being painted as a racist by the press, but I’m sure you know better, and know so much more about the inside track.

It’s sad to be on the outside, not invited to the parties, having nothing to base my vote on but my own intelligence and integrity. How dare I get insulted by an act that warrants immediate dismissal at my workplace, but is seen as good fun by the likes of you. How naive I must be to think that standards of conduct for those who work for the POTUS should be more strict than that of 15 year olds.

Let’s hope that all nations show Sec Clinton more respect than is shown to her by her own boss and peers.

  • Jackarooty
  • mel

Lib, to start off with, Favreau posted the picture on his own facebook site, real mature thing to do by someone who is putting words in the mouth of a POTUS!

Second, just because your low class trailer park family and friends do dispicable, disrepectful and degrading acts, does not speak of most mature people in america, especially when it comes to a former First Lady and Senator, but your class has been exposed!

Third, it is amazing how you have such insight as to how the world and everyone else cares about situations and expressions of total disrespect, even going so far as to claim hillary doesn’t care, my what magical powers you must possess from your glass of kool-aide!

Your asking to trust you in anything when you haven’t even got a shred of decency to realize that supporting someone who is disrespectful as Favreau was, simply shows the character you are made of, your parents must be so proud to have raised such an ignorant child as you have exposed yourself to be here today!

  • ConcernedLib

Just so I’m clear, in your mind, inappropriate pose with cardboard cutout = taliban stoning woman in Afghanistan, myspace party pics = workplace conduct, and Obama = Mao. Well in that case, i guess this post = Mein Kampf, so let me just apologize in advance for damage I’ve done to your carefully constructed mind garden of oppression and state-sanctioned sexism. I thought Americans made their choice in November, but I guess Obama’s army of man-child date rapists decided to stop preying on defenseless cardboard supermarket displays long enough to trick America into voting for Obama through slippery speech writing and “change” . Anyway, I would love to discuss these issues in a more civilized way, but every time I post here, I get called a racist and sexist cult member, so I guess I’ll just slip something into my cocktail and spend the afternoon taking advantage of myself, and/or my Margaret Thatcher cardboard cutout, because, you know, I hate powerful woman, and degrading their images makes me feel like a real big man. Peace out!

  • noproblama

    “small minds”.

We were calling them “sore winners” but you might have more accurately described the Obama-nation.

  • noproblama

For one thing, it’s not the picture, it’s the fact that it was posted on his facebook page. At least that’s the account we heard.

We fully expect these things to go on behind closed doors but when it becomes so very public, something must be done.

    Just ask Jimmy the Greek.

  • Jude

Poor baby has to run away when confronted with some harsh truths.

When one is the President’s mouthpiece to the world, yes, I think the standard of conduct should be very high, even after hours. Too bad the babies in the admin have had to temper tantrum about not being able to access their my space pages during taxpayer paid hours.

Images of degradation and violence toward women lead to real incidents. So go ahead and disgrace your Maggie Thatcher cut out. I’m happy to see another Obot contributing such wonderful ideas of equality to society. You really ‘get the message’ of hope and change, I see.

  • Cas Sammanasu

Whether it happened at a private party or public bathroom, what Jon Favreau did with Hillary Clinton’s cut-out after the election was over should have been reported well, analyzed thoroughly, and severely condemned by all people with even the least amount of common sense and reasonable amount of decency and even a below-normal sense of morality.

It is really sad that Obama’s supporters are still trying to justify Jon Favreau and sad also to see Obama’s public silence on this issue and his continued support (and reward) for Jon Favreau. We need to keep focusing on this issue to expose the stupidity of Jon Favreau and his supporters to the rest of the country and the world. We cannot ignore this by saying that this is inconsequential and hence needs to be forgotten.

  • DAB

Isn’t it amusing to picture Mr. Favreau actually writing that line about “putting aside your childish things” in the Inauguration Address with a straight face?

My first thought was “You and the other Bots should take a piece of your own advice”. Easy to preach, but often harder to live the life…

  • Jude

Great point DAB. I’ve said a few times that Obama’s rhetoric about responsibility is already embraced by so many who did not support him, yet it remains to be seen how his supporters will actualize that objective.

Looking at the disgusting pictures of the National Mall after all those litterbugs left doesn’t bode well for the future. If they can’t do something as simple as taking their own garbage with them, where will they be for the heavy lifting?

  • sproutingly

Think of the outrage if that had been a cut out of Michelle. Just substitute her image for Hillary’s and imagine the cries of racism. Or how about if it had been a picture of Obama himself. Hey, if it’s just boys being boys and a case of “fiddling while Rome burns” then a cutout picture of Obama being disresepcted by those two would have been no big deal Right??

The behavior is only excused because it was a cutout of Hillary.

  • noproblama

So what if Hillary was not his first choice.

Yeah, considering his first choice was the other guy in the photo.

  • Lizzy

Combine his idiot speeches with the fact that we know every word from O’s mouth is a LIE and it makes a grown person hurl.

  • Doc99

I loved Jon Favreau in The Replacements. Oh, THAT Jon Favreau…

  • comradebillyboy

Sure Obama discards those who are no longer useful. I imagine he is keeping Favreau because he is a competent speech writer who will never again be seen in public if he knows what’s good for him. If Favreau embarrasses Obama a second time, I suspect he will join the crowd under the bus.

While I have never been much of an Obama fan, I do not find his fundamental ruthlessness a negative.

What ever his other faults Obama is not stupid (unlike his predecessor)and he appears to be giving Hillary quite a broad portfolio and nowadays treats her with great respect and consideration. I think they will be an effective team.

  • elise

” The real problem is not Favvy boy, its the global view of Hillary fostered by the Obama campaign but started with the GOP in the 1990s.

This is a quote from one of the links you provided, Chris. May I suggest “Favvy boy” will disappear from the Obama administration and his name, if it appears at all in the history of the Obama campaign and administration, will be a footnote scholars will ignore. Not that anyone believes there is or will be any affection between the Clintons and Barack Obama, but there are forces of nature which can’t be ignored or brushed aside. The Clinton’s are such a force and their legacy separately and as a couple is deeply embedded in our consciousness and will be in the history of our country and no detractor will be able to erase the importance of her candidacy or his presidency. It should be pointed out yet again, how many times the Gallup Poll has listed Hillary as the Most Admired Woman In The World and the connections Bill Clinton has made from the period of his presidency and through the work of his foundation. Obama has yet to make a mark (outside of his election) which will place him in history as an admired or respected leader. When the Republicans attempted to remove Bill Clinton him from his office, they failed. Failure is not something which will be ignored by history and cannot be erased. Immediately following her nomination as SoS there were the usual naysayers along with attempts to demean and “dehumanize” her in the American press and among some of our politicians, but this didn’t occur in other parts of the world where the view isn’t partisan and the opinions aren’t colored by an irrational hatred from of small group of people. The illusion painted by supporters of Barack Obama of anger in the Black community is only that and not a true representation of reality. Your post and some others which have appeared here at nq and other blogs tend to present Hillary as a helpless victim, thrown the bone of SoS and who is a dispensable component of a successful presidency for Obama. Please consider the possibility she is indispensable and her talents will be the only way our country can move forward toward peace. Further, allow the possibility there are some members of this administration who understand without her help he will fail. What Colin Powell and Condi Rice did with their terms as SoS was a result of their compromise of principle and independent thought and isn’t a reflection of past SOSs. They will not be remembered in history as anything other than syncopates to a failed presidency. This is not something even Obama in his most arrogant, messianic moment would expect from Hillary Clinton. Obama has no demonstrated expertise in diplomacy or international experience outside his four years as a child in Indonesian and his Kenyan relatives with whom he has had little contact in his life. Certainly not enough to understand how other cultures differ from our own. It’s useless to point out how this continued speculation about Hillary’s strength is not helpful since one of the most amazing facts surrounding the Clintons is the mythic proportions of tall tales told and enormous devotion or hatred inspired by the simple fact of their continued existence and perseverance in public life in this country. It would help to remember the glowing praise from both sides of the isle during her confirmation and overwhelming approval of her nomination.

  • OBushMa

BO and Jon’s bromance is so precious.

  • http://Godhelpusall lee M

The mess they left behind after the inauguration reminded me of the mess they left behind after the convention. Both were examples of their messy minds.

I suppose we should be thankful that they didn’t also leave discarded and trodden American Flags, the way they did in Denver. Or did some patriotic group go around behind them and collect the flags before the pictures were taken?

Jon Favreau is just another example of the addlepated type of misogynist that permeated the primaries, only he is more disgraceful because according to Obama he is supposed to be intelligent. If this is what passes for intelligence these days we are in a heap of trouble.

  • elise

Try to picture this, concerned: There is a life sized cut out of Michele Obama. On one side a young man has a hand on the breast and on the other side another young man is kissing the cheek of the pretend Michele and has his hand in her hair. The young an on the left has a bottle of beer held to Michele’s lips. What more would these two young men have to do for you to be offended or consider the tableau sexual abuse? If it were your mother, sister, girlfriend?

  • elise

Joe Biden’s spokesperson said he was never offered the position of SoS. Do you think it’s possible this was a discussion which occurred only between Jill and Joe Biden. It seemed Obama’s people were taken off guard, but when they responded they denied it ever happened.

  • http://home.comcast.net/~vincep312 VinceP1974

I’m sorry but when I was 27 I one thing is for sure..if I was one of the Presidential candidate’s Rasputin, I wouldn’t be molesting cardboard cutouts of a First Lady, and past challenger.

It just shows how much crassness and immaturity has taken root. This is a very reckless administration.
