perhaps a diary on the fact that israel has declared a one sided ceasefire might be in order now.

It is not as though there was an opposition to them anyway. The HAMAS rockets are nothing more than fireworks, however HAMAS is a monster created by Israel for Israel.

In some respects and this is really horrible, the Israel moderates did this to show that they were as tough on “terrorism” as LIKUD (who are many times more looney).

If this gets moderates elected, then it served some purpose, but this was not a price worth paying and all it did was create more extremists, who want revenge for killing children.

It is also not so easy to throw anti-semite at Gerald Kaufman, as his family helped create the State of Israel and he has known every serious politician of the Country.

I was reading an article today about a middle of the road, average Palistinian taxi driver who had never been very political before in his life. He was too busy just trying to get by. Yesterday he had his house blown up and today he joined Hamas. He’s political now. Nice going Israel. What’s that business model? For every customer you piss off, you lose 8 potential customers to bad word of mouth? So for every innocent person you kill, how many terrorists do you create? 10? 20? 100?

Why would Hamas agree to a cease fire when Israel is damaging itself with this type of mistake and militarism?

Thanks, Scotty. I did say that the second indented part came from the YouTube channel’s commentary alongside the YouTube itself. I haven’t a clue who that person is, but the focus shouldn’t be on those words so much as on his speech — i.e, the video.

Israel would be better off if they would simply treat Hamas like they would treat any good paying customer that wants to kill them. They could even call them clients, not mere customers; high end valued clients.

Israel could send Hamas on an all expense paid trip to Vegas. Those kind of perks always work in the business world. The kids could be sent off to Disneyland and the wife could could get a free massage and manicure.

Then Hamas would be more willing to peruse Israel’s sales brochures and order tons of product from there conveniently located distribution centers and take advantage of the 90-days-same-as-cash policy that Hamas deserves to have extended their way.

There is more than a grain of truth in Sir Gerald Kaufman’s remarks. As other SOS before her, Hillary will have her hands full with this conflict. I am not normally an isolationist. But this conflict brings out that latent tendency in me becasue it appears to be so unsolvable. Hillary has the smarts and the political know-how and will to effect changes here. I wish her well. She gives me hope.

Israel announces a “ceasefire,” but they intend to stay INSIDE Gaza for “stability.”

That’s not a ceasefire. That’s a return to occupation.

Clearly there are no simple solutions to this problem, but this is a brave comment that speaks to several important points that often are lost in discussions over the plight of Israel. There can be no resolution of any conflict if one side is going to be seen as being wholly (holy) right and the other completely wrong.

The settlers in Israel have been dreadful to the Palestinians. Their excuse is that God told them to live on Palestinian land. That is as deserving of tolerance, as a suicide bomber’s killing of Israelis out of some sense that their God is mandating that murder. This conflict isn’t about God it is about humans justifying the unjustifiable for their own benefit and the harm of others. No belief in God actually supports that.

Israel is unique, but not special. Yes, Jews have suffered, but that does not allow them to make another people suffer. The Palestinians have suffered too much. Israel needs to back off. I agree with Sir Gerald Kaufman.

Israel has declared a unilateral ceasefire–but refuses to withdraw from Gaza. Israel is continuing its military occupation of the Gaza Ghetto. So, it’s not in any sense a good-faith effort toward peace; it’s entirely what was planned for the past 18 months, as Israel starved 1.5 million people with their blockade.

This is a tactical move to re-occupy Gaza, Stodgie. And, when Hamas refuses to observe Israel’s ceasefire, which they will, because they are a democratically-elected government and have the right to do so, Israel is hoping that this will help all those predisposed to support anything Israel does, to justify Israeli re-occupation of Gaza, and to forget about the war crimes Israel has committed.

More along this line – Naomi Klein devotes a chapter in “The Shock Doctrine” to explaining why peace with the Palestinians is not in Israel’s econamic interest. Just chilling, but it makes a sick sort of sense, and makes me even angrier at how this has played out.

Saying that Israelis deserve that land because (mostly other) Jews have suffered is like Michelle Obama say ing she deserves reparations (I don’t know if she did, it’s just an example) because her ancestors suffered under slavery.

I am encouraged by the people who have enough courage to speak out, and it is difficult.
My dismay comes about when I see no sense of “urgency”.
We want to think that much is taking place, behind the scenes, but the wheels of diplomacy turn too slowly to save lives.

stodgie, Please keep us informed as to how many innocent Israeli women and children get killed by Hamas in the next few days. Don’t neglect to include hospitals and schools hit. It is silly to assume that a defensive response to aggression should be numerically proportional. We lost 3000 on 9/11. If there were 3 million Al Qaeda in the world and we managed to wipe them ALL out, (a true 1000 to 1 ratio) it would be cause for a great celebration.

CA lefty–you make some good points. I was very taken with Amy Goodman’s ‘Democracy Now.’ Agreed most of the time when she bashed the Bush administration and the Iraq War. But I dropped my daily habit for her NYC program because I felt she went too far left; some reports were a stretch.

And the station’s unqualified support of Obama finally broke my dependence on Goodman reportage.

This happens when you become, almost unconsciously,

Kaufman’s comments should not be interpreted as one coming from a Jew,this is irrelevant. The problem is that it totally neglects facts. Far more powerful is this video of British MP Kaufman’s speech put to music and accompanied by images of what the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians.  A picture speaks a thousand words!  So many people are afraid to even open their minds a crack to considering that what Israel is doing is VERY WRONG.  So many people are quick to call anyone who criticizes the Israelis an antisemite.  My grandparents were orthodox Jews who also fled Poland before WWII, just as Sir Kaufman’s parents did.  Sir Kaufman is not an antisemite, and neither am I.  There are many people of Jewish descent, living within Israel and living outside of Israel, who feel strongly that what Israel is doing to the Palestinians is an outrage.  None of us are antisemites.  That the U.S. blindly supports Israel and that the U.S. gives Israel 3 Billion US dollars a year, one-fourth of our entire foreign aid budget, is the result of soulless political decisions.

I think Kaufman was absolutely right and justified in his comments. A shame there are not more like him.
