[Updated] Is Obama about to crush the hopes of the desperately ill and economic needs of states counting on stem cell research?

Bumped up from January 18th. UPDATED TEXT: I have been scouring the news for any definitive indication that Obama is indeed going to strike Bush’s stem cell order, but am unable to find PLAIN LANGUAGE that confirms he will. The best I could find was this “maybe soon, maybe” paragraphs at the Los Angeles Times on January 20, 2009, along with the good news on a common sense approach to abortion:

In one of his first acts as president, Barack Obama is planning to lift a rule that prevents federal money from going to international family planning groups that counsel women on abortion or perform the procedure. [This will help women worldwide.]

Obama’s repeal of the abortion aid policy is one of several executive actions he will take soon after his inauguration today, according to Obama transition aides. He is also considering lifting Bush administration restrictions on federally funded stem cell research. …

Then there’s this story from a pro-life publication with a chilling title: “Bioethicist: Obama Letting Congress Kill Bush Stem Cell Policy Smacks of Politics.” Obviously the “bioethicist” is opposed to stem cell research but, like me, he sees Obama as choosing the cowardly route of putting the onus on Congress, not on himself.

I have a strong hunch that President Obama is vacillating due to pressure from the powerful black ministers who brought him busloads of votes as well as his cozy alliances with conservative mega-church ministers like Rick Warren. It’s just a hunch. Surely those religious leaders are also pressuring Obama on the abortion rule. So, I’m a skeptic, and I believe in Obama’s “change” when I see him actually bring about change. The first way I will see his “change” is when he has some guts and nerve, and overrides Bush’s executive orders. Passing the buck to Congress is an “easy out” for a man who campaigned vigorously promising reversals on stem cell research.

I checked the new White House Web site — do check out this site! — and confirmed that President Obama has signed no Executive Orders or Proclamations:

bo-eo-3

Now for my January 18th piece, which Ani asked me to republish. Why? It’s important. If Obama passes this off to Congress, it’s a “tell,” as they say in poker. If Obama comes through, I’ll begin to change my mind about his character — as in, maybe he has some. Character, I mean. Although he’s going to have to come through with a lot more before I ever become a fan. A whole hell of a lot more.

As so many readers said here the other day, if Hillary had been sworn in today, she’d have already rescinded Bush’s Executive Order on stem cell research, as well as that affecting women around the world.

*************************************

ORIGINAL STORY: As the great political thinker Mae West once said, “An ounce of performance is worth pounds of promises.

Institutions, scientists, and states’ governors across the nation are giddy with anticipation that President Barack Obama will strike Bush’s stem cell executive order. Twenty-one Nobel Laureates wrote a letter to PEBO last month; the letter organizer said that “he feels sure the incoming president will be receptive.” Writes a San Francisco Chronicle reporter in “Californians optimistic Obama will reward state” on January 18, 2008:

[O]ne of the most high-profile initiatives the incoming administration supports is stem cell research. That would reverse eight years of Bush opposition – and no region is better positioned to benefit than the Bay Area.

The UCSF Mission Bay project in San Francisco is the state’s stem cell research hub, and throughout Silicon Valley and the East Bay, research scientists are already bracing for a funding boom.

There are stories like this across the nation.

Those stories also come from Atlanta, Georgia, which is counting on an infusion of funding for its research facilities which, of course, also means new jobs, new tax revenues, and all the benefits that state governments accrue from a growing industry like stem cell research. (See the Atlanta Journal-Constitution‘s “Stem cells could be big business for state.”) Then there are the hundreds of thousands who suffer from debilitating diseases who are counting on Obama’s promise of immediate action. We recall that Obama attacked John McCain for not strongly supporting the research. And we note that Obama’s transition team promised lightning-fast action.

But then there came Obama’s statements to CNN’s John King today — the same day that those hopeful stories in San Francisco, California and Atlant, Georgia were published.

The REALITY: Obama is backtracking on rescinding Bush’s executive orders and instead, he told King today, he prefers that Congress pass a bill, which will take, oh, how many months and/or years?

So much for an “ounce of performance”:

Here is CNN’s and The New Yorker‘s Jeffrey Toobin discussing the POWER that Barack Obama will have as of noon, January 20, 2009, to undo Bush’s stifling restrictions on stem cell research, abortion counseling, and other important issues to millions of Americans:

But, instead, here’s what Obama told John King today. I’ll title this section this way:

Well, you know …

KING: You will have the power at the end of that parade to, at the stroke of a pen, lift the federal ban on embryonic stem cell research. There may be the votes to do it in Congress now, but you don’t have to wait, you could do it in your first few minutes in office, will you?

OBAMA: Well, you know, if we can do something legislative, then I usually prefer a legislative process because those are the people’s representatives.

And I think that on embryonic stem cell research, the fact that you have a bipartisan support around that issue, the fact that you have Republicans like Orrin Hatch who are fierce opponents of abortion and yet recognize that there is a moral and ethical mechanism to insure that people with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s can actually find potentially some hope out there, you know, I think that sends a powerful message.

So we’re still examining what things we’ll do through executive order. But I like the idea of the American people’s representatives expressing their views on an issue like this. …

Blah, blah, blah.

“I like the idea of the American people’s representatives expressing their views on an issue like this. …”

TRANSLATION: “I am passing the buck so I don’t have to take any heat from any religious leaders. And to HELL with the millions of people who voted for me in good part because stem cell research restrictions were what they expected– KNEW and had GOOD FAITH — that you would undo.”

California and Georgia, you can sit and wait. Boy, can you imagine the feelings of all of the people who were interviewed for those news stories in today’s San Francisco Chronicle and “Atlanta Journal-Constitution?

Obama just knocked the breath right out of them.

How about people like Amy Comstock Rick, interviewed for CNN’s article that accompanied the above video, “Obama may reverse Bush policies on stem cells, drilling, abortion,” which was written in December 2008, while there was still reason to HOPE that Obama would act quickly and decisively:

Obama is expected to use his executive authority to reverse Bush’s order limiting the types of embryonic stem cell research that can receive federal tax dollars.

Advocates for those suffering from a host of diseases — including diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injuries — are eagerly awaiting the Bush-era restrictions to be lifted.

“We have every reason to believe — if not on Day One, then in the very near future — they will be issuing an order rescinding this policy,” said Amy Comstock Rick, president of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research.

Ms. Comstock Rick, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait. And given how inefficient the Democratic Congress is, you’re very likely going to have to wait quite a long time. Which is nuts, when Obama could undo this with the stroke of his pen. I’m sorry for you, Ms. Comstock Rick. I bet you voted for Obama expecting that he’d act very quickly for you. You counted on him. And why not? He gave you every reason to “hope” that there would be “change,” didn’t he? But, as those of us who scrutinized his history very closely came to find out, for Barack Obama those are often mere words to use to win elections. Because winning is the prize. Governing, not so much.

We were excoriated for our opposition to Sen. Obama. Yet, we felt compelled to warn people this is that was going to happen.

Now, if stem cell research is important to you — as it is to me because I have conditions from which such advances would be meaningful — please write to President Obama immediately, and DEMAND that he fulfill his campaign promises.

The AFP has a story, “Obama wants Congress to act on lifting stem cells ban” as does Politico.com,Obama may not lift stem cell limits.”

Now there’s change for you.

Not.

Oh I love this quote from the AFP article cited above:

If the research could yield hope for victims of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, “I think that sends a powerful message,” [Obama] said.

Isn’t that touching. A powerful message. What in the hell about the millions of people whose lives could be changed for the better?

Who in the hell cares about a “powerful message”?

People want their lives back!

Show some guts, would you?

  • Strawberrybitch

Jesus…can anyone name ONE promise Obama is planning to keep? ‘Cause…I’m racking my brain right now and can’t come up with one.

    • Tony Stark

No surprise here. It’s always been about avoiding responsibility and passing the buck. That way, anti-stem cell people will blame Congress rather than him.

I think he is voting present before he gets into office.

Good one! I suspect he has or is currently making up a Presidential stamp that says PRESENT. And hiring an ‘executive clerk’ whose job is to ink it and stamp it on all relevant documents – as he will be on vacation in Hawaii or visiting Heads of States in other countries as he campaigns for his next election bringing together all the Americas under his Emporership.

    • Judy L. NC

You took the words right out of my mouth, “present”.

  • Jan

I understand, and sometimes even agree with wanting to IMMEDIATELY undo the damage Bush and Cheney wrought — but if Obama isn’t lying, he’s right — the unitary executive was an abuse of our Constitution, our LAW, both Congress and the President should rescind Bush’s mistakes.

I’m uncomfortable with ANY president abusing power.

And if they wanted, they could, legislatively, undo Bush’s commands within a week.

Let’s see how consistent he is, though.

    • BernieO

I have to agree. Also, stem cell research is something a lot of conservatives want. Obama is willing to take the hit on undoing the gag rule on abortion, so why wouldn’t he want to get credit for this more popular, pro-science move? He will certainly get passage of legislation which will make it a lot harder for the policy to be undone in the future. After all he is undoing Bush’s gag rule with a stroke of the pen. The scientific community would much prefer legislation so that they can count on their work not being stopped in another few years. Investors are more likely to risk money, too.
Also I would think Dems and even some Republicans would want to be able to share the credit since this would be a popular move in many areas of the country.
I can’t see any reason Obama would want to duck this issue.

  • Texas Playwright

What a coward. Hillary would have signed that order on Day One.

bho the fraud, the puppet, the shadow on the wall as my fellow poster here said, will not make himself real to anyone, will not make a decision on his own, will not keep a promise, will not take responsibility. Millions of us saw this in the primaries. Now, millions more will see it in Pelosi/Dean/Brazile/Reid/Kennedy/Kerry/Axelrod/Emmanual/Jarrett/Rezko/Wright/Khalidi/Ayers land, the Districts of Corruption, DC for short.

bho the fraud has his fascist groups and millions all ready to bully local Congress folks in their own districts to push his fascist agenda and win in 2012. Gee, why don’t we 18 million and more do the same, show some guts ourselves and watchdog these thugs and ELECT rather than SELECT a leader in 2012. Just a thought.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Damn straight she would have. I know it in my bones. Just she has guts.

And quite honestly, the political fall-out won’t be that major. Every poll I’ve EVER seen shows stem cell research supported in large numbers by most Americans, including religious Americans.

      • BlueTopaz

He likes to waste money. Why reverse it with the stroke of the pen, when we could pay dozens of lawmakers to fight over it, thus preventing them from working on NEW legislation (like impeaching the first AA President ;) .

    • The Real HC

Yes. I don’t love everything about Hillary Clinton but she would have lifed these executive bans immediately. And rightly so. This Obama-mania in DC makes me sick.

  • fiscalliberal

So – How does Pastor Rick Warren feel about stem cells?

Poor Obots – they had to work to get Obam and now they have to work the congress.

Obama is folding already – lets see how he does on his first Supreme Court Nomination.

  • mel

How many times do people need to be kicked in the head to realize they elected a community organizer as POTUS?

Obama’s famous words to those he was working with, who had everything to lose if it failed was “your saying it will send a very powerful message in my opinion” thus Obama keeps his fingers clean, yet takes all the glory if something succeeds as he did stealing the good works of the woman who actually won the Altglen asbestoes fight in Chicago!

Obama will become the perfect POTUS because he will do nothing and take credit for all that is successful and fire all those who fail!

Nice political life Hillary, hope you re-win your Senate seat in 2012!

  • Cathy in Ks.

I wonder how some of the Obama supporters are feeling now and will continue to feel as they realize they have put a man into office who is full of “empty rhetoric”.

Some Obot relatives of mine who are also in favor of stem cell research have been very excited by Obama’s election. I wonder what they are thinking right about now or if they even know yet about Obama’s vacillation on this issue?

  • Hot Librarian

To take advantage of any major benefits from foetal stem cells we will need to suspend our dead bodies for years in those cyrogenic vats.

Then we will be thawed & our ailments cured -but we will be bloated ,fat & probably quite ugly.

Aint gonna happen any time soon with or without Obama.

And to attack someone’s physical appearance … well, it’s uncalled for and rude.

We are guests here on Larry’s blog. We should try to behave as such. He is very tolerant of varying points of view and arguments, but we should not take advantage of that. His name and reputation is, to some degree at least, associated with our behavior here.

on what basis do you charge Hot Librarian with being an Obama robot?

On the basis of the ignorance of HL’s post.

GM, is this the first time you’ve posted under your “real” name? Maybe you should ignore my posts like you ignored much ruder posts. I’ll do you the same favor.

mild compared to what I’ve read written by obots – true.

You charge HL with being an Obot on the basis of the ignorance of HL’s post — not all ignorant posts are made by Obots.

A lot of your posts I have found worth reading. But I’ll stop if you keep being an asshole ;o)

    • DaddysDarlin

People who are ill can immediately take advantage of stem cell research! Stem cells can offer hope to millions with diabetes now! Stem cells can help those with parkinson’s now! Stem cells can help those with altzeheimers disease now!
So if it cant help you right now, you are against helping others who are suffering?
I am sure if there was anyone in your family that could benefit from this important research you would be the first in line to ask Obama WTF?

      • Hot Librarian

I undertook experimental stem cell transplant for a stage 4 bone marrow cancer.

This technique has been available for 13 years I was the first person in the world to trial a new range of anti nausea drugs that have changed the face of chemotherapy -even though they did not work for me.

The diseases you mention have made steady advances through -in order – brain pacemakers , delaying drugs . islet transfers & best of all across the board micro needles.

To put so much hope on foetal stem cells detracts from the successes of adult stem cells & cord blood.Unless you want to deliberately create & discard an embryo this is where the most practical applications are.

PS There needs to be restrictions drawn up – surely you are not going to blindly trust scientists/

The world & all its diseases do not revolve around Obama.

        • BlueTopaz

I’m sure that will be news to Oblahma. Maybe you should tell him.

        • NetherLands

Good points. Perhaps PEBO just got informed now and didn’t just listen to the empty promises of Big Medicine. Hope he has the guts to challenge Big Sue-age as well (not bloody likely given the importance of lawyers in his party) and starts to realise you can’t eg expect insurance companies to lower their tort-fees for doctors if the payouts of sueing in the USA remain so inflated.(And although I hate this kind of argumentation: I have an as yet uncurable neurological condition, and in my own and extended family many have as yet uncurable diseases as well. Stuff happens.)

          Obama Bought The Presidency

          • Annie Oakley

Technically, Netherlands, Obama didn’t buy the presidency. It was bought for him, or others bought it using him for their brand-logo-image.

          • JulieD

            Netherlands –

What the hell does med mal practice ins. have to do with any of this?

The stinking insurance companies are out to gouge the public, including the medical profession.

When claims go down, rates continue to skyrocket.

But allow competition for med mal practice insurance in a state or even announce it is coming and watch the rates descend.

Letting Doctors pool their resources and self-insure works well too.

There isn’t a single decent doctor who could honestly claim his or her med mal rates were actually due to litigation recovery.

BO will not be able to stop this research.

I hope that something good comes of it for you and yours.

    • The Real HC

To take advantage of stem cells, we need more research right away. Not later. Not when congress gets to it or Mr. Obama feels it will “sell”.

The Obama has a moral obligation to keep his word. Why is this never said out loud? He said he would not sign FISA and he did. He says hes for stem cell research, and he will not rescind Bush’s ridiculous executive orders. The list goes on and on.

Your view isnt another perspective, its a bogus argument which would flunk you out of debate 101.

Vatican Warns Obama on Ethics of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

    • Jan

Perhaps a true Congressional process will allow the laws to have greater weight, ie, not as easy to overturn.

One executive signing order can be overturned with another apparently, it’s not really LAW when it’s simply a whim of the President, a residue of Dick Cheney.

      Dick Cheney residue.

      Ew.

  • DaddysDarlin

I just knew in my heart that those who would be asked to give the most by Obama, the sick, the poor, the unemployed, would be given the least.
Those who cant wait for a congress to pass a bill, people are sick and dying today, those same people who voted for this pig because he promised to lift the ban on stem cell research, will be told to suffer longer and wait on congress.
Take that you sick Americans!!! Did you really think for one moment Obama would keep a promise to you? Those who need hope and change the most? Did you really put your hope into this fraud?
It’s the thanks for voting for me, but now I don’t need you anymore so just get off my back about helping you out and start helping yourselves!
Can you say impeachment? I knew you could. I wish we could impeach a president for making false promises to those without much hope left, but we cant.
You were there when Obama wanted you, but where is Obama now that you need him to keep just one promise he made to the American people?
He is passing the responsibility off to someone else.
All he has to do is sign a piece of paper to end the suffering of millions of Americans, yet he wont do it.
What does that tell you about the morality of this man?
Obama is not a man of integrity, I just wish the sick and dying didnt have to find out about it in this harsh and uncaring way.
That is Obama, harsh and uncaring, unless it benefits him that is.

Pushed, Held Accountable, Supported; But Who is Going to be Frederick Douglass?

Tavis Smiley was one of the guests on Meet the Press today. I think he makes some valid points, including a comment about the responsibility of the media. from the transcript:

Tavis, do you think that this president has a unique obligation to specifically target issues and problems in the black community?

MR. SMILEY: That’s a good question. I don’t think he has more of a responsibility, but he certainly has a moral responsibility given that African-Americans are disproportionately impacted by so many of the issues that he’s going to be grappling with in this administration starting a couple of days from now. That said, this campaign was run strategically, strategically, David, brilliant on this notion of, how might we put it, reducing white suspicion and playing up black solidarity, or sort of taking advantage of black solidarity. It was a brilliant strategy for running and winning this election. I’m not so sure that you can govern that way. You, you, you can’t run a country by trying to dance around, avoid dealing with issues where there are clearly racial and economic disparities. So the strategy for the campaign is one thing; running the government, government is, is another thing. And I think ultimately when this adviser, whoever this person is, suggests that I was the object lesson and that Barack Obama was–or he is untouchable in the black community, I don’t even think the black community likes that kind of language. Because untouchable to me is, is equivalent to unaccountable, and I don’t think anybody, blacks or anybody else, wants a president right now who is unaccountable. Everywhere you look you hear the word accountable…

So the country wants him to do well. That said, while we want him to be a great president–and Doris [Kearns Goodwin] makes it very clear he has all the requisite talent to become a great president–because they’re made and not born, presidents, I think, have to be pushed into their greatness.

Even with all their good ideas and all the people around them, Abraham Lincoln–you wrote about it brilliantly, Abraham Lincoln is a great president in part because of a guy named Frederick Douglass.

Somebody’s got to be willing to play the role of Frederick Douglass. Is it the media?

…the American people? There’s got to be a Frederick Douglass in this equation if you’re going to have an Abraham Lincoln. And if Obama is going to be a great president, he’s got to be pushed, held accountable, supported.

    • elise

I’m not trying to minimize Fredrick Douglas’ contribution to the history of AAs or the American Civil War, but Obama is not Lincoln and I haven’t seen any African American Civil Rights legend anywhere near him.

There is a misconception surrounding the Civil War and it’s nexus to the emancipation and the end of slavery. The argument which ensued when both Kansas and Missouri were considering statehood was not a simple matter of free vs slave states on moral considerations, but more about keeping a balance in congress.

The real problems at that time came from two different economies, agrarian and industrial. The movement for emancipation was small and consisted of the underground railroad and individual freedom rather than changing laws to make slavery illegal. The war began with the succession of southern states and Lincoln’s commitment to keeping the union together.

In fact, the proclamation only freed those slaves in states not under the control of the Union and didn’t effect the border states or states north of the Mason/Dixon line. There is no indication in the history of the period that Lincoln was waging the war for any moral imperative.

Likewise, there is no evidence Obama will act to focus on race specific issues and who would his Douglas be? Those AAs close to him may want reparations to be revisited, but given Obama’s lack of enthusiasm, it will probably never happen.

AAs may be the voters hurt the most by this empty, vacuous man.

Correction: Should be “secession of southern states.”

      • Jan

Have you read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s “Team of Rivals?”

It seemed my impression, toward the end of the war, he began to understand the greater dynamic of slavery, and it did in fact become a moral issue, for him.

I’ve got David Herbert Donald’s “Lincoln,” up next…

        • elise

No Jan, I haven’t read that one , but I’ll look for it. There are two excellent books I have read and recommend to anyone interested. Both are by Bruce Canton. This Hallowed Ground begins before the actual beginning of the war and continues through the battle of Gettysburg. Aside from his own research, he includes letters from soldiers, North and South, written to their families. The second book is A Stillness at Appomattox which takes you though the rest of the war and Lee’s surrender.

It is a fact Lincoln’s primary objective was to preserve the union and not emancipation. The first order set on his desk for weeks before he even bothered to sign. When he faced opposition after his first term, he turned to the Abolitionists for political expediency. He didn’t want the Southern economy destroyed and had he lived, the Reconstruction period would have been much kinder. Many in Washington wanted the South punished for the secession, but through it all, Lincoln fought to bring the Union back together. He also supported amnesty for Confederate soldiers, especially Lee and the other generals. He had asked Lee at the beginning of the war to head the Union army, but Lee had strong roots in the South and refused. I’m not saying he wasn’t a great president, but I have never seen any evidence emancipation was the driving force in his plans.

This is an interesting interview clip, CG, because just last week I heard Tavis Smiley say that it was the responsibility of people like himself [those with access to the airways and print] to help Barack Obama become a “great president.”

When I heard the original statement, I wanted to gag. Chris Matthews said something similar several months ago [it was "his" job to make sure this administration was successful].

But here Smiley sounds somewhat less confident that Barack Obama is going to be . . . decisive. Running a good campaign was “suppose” to be the experience to handle the presidency. Remember??

I hope the MSM remembers they own this, lock, stock and barrel.

As for rescinding Executive Orders, I specifically recall HRC listing the number of things she had scheduled for “Day One.” And this morning? There’s a cart and pony show at the National Cathedral.

      Oh, happy days!

He seems unable to make any definitive decision about anything. If his flip flops are not the result of political pandering, but a basic flaw in his character, it won’t take long for the other leaders in the world to discover the truth. Stem cell research should be an easy answer since a majority of people in this country support it, but he is still parsing his words and not showing the leadership we so desperately need on many important issues and it harks back to Hillary’s 3AM phone call ad. How long will it take for that call to come and who will make the decisions or will a decision be made?

    • tek

elise: I think you’re right. I think Obama is the consummate politician, but does that make a leader? Doubtful.

Right now, this country needs a leader.

    • Citizen70

Yet he’s sticking with his tax-cheat nominee for Sec. of Treasury. I hope others will join me in pressuring the Senate Finance Committee to reject Geithner – let’s see how fast Obie throws his BFF under the bus if it gets too difficult!

OMG I can’t believe it. THIS….even THIS he backtracks on?

The man is a lying weasel. He is cowaring and backing in the corner from keeping his promises. THAT LYING F@CK. It’s ok for HIM as president, to make other decisions, particularly the ones that the people don’t support. And then he’ll give us bull crap rhetoric of “I don’t pay attention to polls, I do what I think is right”.

Or then, there will be when he really doesn’t want to follow through on his promises and what the people are expecting him to act on. No No NO, he will not use HIS position to do the right thing. NO NO NO NO, NO, this LYING FU@K would rather threaten Congress if they don’t give him the remaining 350 billion to use as he wishes, because they should place blind faith in this LYING SACK OF SH!T, and threatens with a VETO…wooo, HERE he will make an act as president, but not on something so important that he used as campaign rhetoric only, OBVIOUSLY.

    What a LOSER.

i think it is obvious why he voted present so many times. he can’t take a stand.

AGI, yes; he must have his “opinions and perceptions” formulated for him as to provide him whatever current advantage he is seeking in the moment. Disposable truths.

    ..and “recycled” lies.

The idea that Abraham Lincoln was a great president because Frederick Douglass pushed him into it is ridiculous in the extreme. Frederick Douglass was a great black leader–who married a white woman–but whatever influence he had over Lincoln concerned one area of the total agenda Lincoln undertook.

Interesting how all of a sudden, everyone in the country is an expert on Abraham Lincoln.

    • Jan

Well, they read Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book — of course they are…

      LOL

      I agree with you.

I do understand many people’s resistance on moral grounds, but scientist say they can work around that.
    I really don’t expect a resolution, however.

  • DanNY

Obama should just reverse Bush’s executive order and put stemcell research in place.

If he doesn’t do it, he’s the biggest I can only vote present fool in history, bigger than any of us could have imagined. And to tell you the truth I imagined him to be a humongous fool (because.he.is.)!

  • Annie Oakley

Who will be the first journalist to run screaming from the room after one of these Presidential Responses?

OBAMA: Well, you know, if we can do something legislative,
    Obie starts round the barn…

then I usually prefer a legislative process because those are the people’s representatives.
states the obvious no one can disagree with

And I think that on embryonic stem cell research, the fact that you have a bipartisan support around that issue,
    I’m sooo inclusive

the fact that you have Republicans like Orrin Hatch who are fierce opponents of abortion
    Republicans like me

and yet recognize that there is a moral and ethical mechanism

to insure that people with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s
I can see all sides of an issue and remain above them

can actually find potentially some hope out there,

I also thank you, Animal Control, for the link to the Obamameter. I have to be unconvinced that however you voted in the election, we have the same result: Bush III’s policies.

WELL, looky here. Obama is going to use one of those “executive orders” for something other than…you know, an important thing like stem cell research. He finds this issue much more pressing to use an executive order on than THAT. (snark)

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama is considering issuing an executive order to reverse a controversial Bush administration abortion policy in his first week in office, three Democratic sources said Monday.

Obama’s second full day as president falls on the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the United States.

The sources said Obama may use the occasion to reverse the “Mexico City policy” reinstated in 2001 by Bush that prohibits U.S. money from funding international family planning groups that promote abortion or provide information, counseling or referrals about abortion services.

I knew that Specter and Hatch supported stem cell research, but I can’t remember how it played on the democratic side of the aisle…and of course, there are new members installed now as well.
Kicking it back to Congress will either drag it out forever, or kill it outright.

    • Mo from Texas

OTOH, they can get it through in a week, if they want.

Susan hinted at some political intrigue, and I would expect that is correct, our “leaders” can’t just do the right thing, they have to strategize, poorly, first.

Don’t the majority of Americans favor SCR, though?

And the contribution to American scientific research, and therefore culture and over all competiveness cannot be minimized, certainly this should be considered when making any decision.

Obama should make sure to appoint ethical scientists, though, to oversee any program, not this stupid medicore trash that has populated the scene, as of late.

And by that I mean sloppy, ineffective scientists, with no regard for ethics, those who feel science should be empty of morality.

      Not all scientists are intelligent.

What else can we expect from backtrack barack ?

Susan you may get mad, but here goes.

ASCs are working now, many companies, many cures.

ESCs can’t because they’re too unstable, they grow too fast and they haven’t found a way to stop it.

I know this due to the death of my uncle in a study done in NYC four years ago. He got tumors all over the place and we lost him. The famous hospital is still trying to shut the study up. Two other men died as well. I saw one guy at the Parkinson’s conference in DC last year, so he’s okay. The others I haven’t seen.

It’s great for diabetes, many cures so far… why the media hasn’t put it out there is suspicious. There’s a lot of private money pouring into it.

Also a lot done with ASCs for heart issues, bone marrow, etc.

They’re still trying with ESCs, not a cure yet (the growth, like I said up thread). ASCs are good because they’re yours (no rejection issues).

We have to get money to what’s working already. Last I heard they found a way to make ASCs ‘act’ like ESCs (maybe more flexible/pluripotent), don’t know, I have to look. I’ll get in touch with those I know in the field to get whole journal pieces and the latest findings/advances.

I will be back with some links.

  • Sassy

My understanding is that many privately funded companies are making good progress.
The issue gets sticky as it pertains to tax-payer dollars.
And inevitably, the cloning marchers show up in full battle mode.

I would keep a close eye on changes to the United Nations Population Fund – restrictions and conditions portion of the agreement.

Sometimes policies can be ‘cloaked’ through their implemention in a ’round about manner’ that is hidden from public inspection. The public is not too keen on reviewing numbers and agreement details and unfortunately, the same goes for the msm.

It will be up to the special interest groups to pay really close attention to the details in an effort to shed light on any disconnects between ‘talk’ and ‘action’.

    Obama to fund forced abortions

    Saturday, November 15, 2008By CNA

De-funded during the Bush Administration, US money for the UN Population Fund that supports China’s policy of coercive abortion will flow again during the Obama Administrations, say supporters

Supporters of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are confident that President-elect Barack Obama will reverse the Bush administration’s 2002 decision to stop the $40 million it received in U.S. funding. The policy was instated because of UNFPA’s support for China’s one-child policy, which includes coercive abortion practices.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D – N.Y.) said the funding will be approved by the Democratic majority Congress. Her comments came while speaking Wednesday at a press conference at the National Press Club where the 2008 U.N. report on world population was released.

You know the president will have to do nothing,” said Maloney. “He will just have to let the will of Congress go through. One of the changes is that UNFPA will be funded,” CNSNews.com reports.

Nevertheless, Rep. Maloney claimed the U.S. will no longer “impose our own ideology” under the UNFPA funding changes.

She said Obama “has already said his administration will change the way we do business in Washington and that improving the role of women around the world is going to be one of his prominent priorities.

Many people will be keeping close eye on UN Population Fund-for a variety of reasons including this opposed to eugenics- see below:
