[...] Inauguration Day - Other Bits and Pieces (by LisaB at No Quarter) Bob Herbert now says Lyndon Johnson is a worthy civil rights figure. Herbert imagines a gathering of past civil rights leaders to see BO inaugurated… Remember when even the mention of Johnson’s role in civil rights legislation was racist? Well, I guess it’s only racist if spoken of by a Clinton… [A]t the time, Herbert characterized Clinton’s reminder of Johnson’s role [in passing civil rights legislation] as a “cheap shot” at MLK. “And there was Mrs. Clinton telling the country we don’t need ‘false hopes,’ and taking cheap shots at, of all people, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Nice, Bob Herbert. Still a tool. I guess only you get to mention Johnson’s role in this. [...]

The historians have pointed out that our culture is demonstrating all the evidence of a society in decline. Our dependency on financial industries rather than manufacturing industries, our expansion into other countries and our mindless partying by huge numbers of pleasure-seeking people are all stages that a decaying society go through.

At such times throughout history the people have chosen "inspirational" leaders who have promised whatever it takes to make the people feel better about themselves and their lots in life. BO will be the first of them to break the mold, if he actually succeeds. In general, they not only fail, but they fail miserably and take millions of innocent and suffering people down with them.

Yesterday was the high point of the drunken binge BO and his supporters have been on. The 25% of the population who voted for him and who support him have been a loud and boisterous lot. They have been able to magnify the appearance that there are more of them than there actually are, because the media and Hollywood have acted like amplifiers, giving them more coverage and a louder voice than they deserve.

If they were truly confident and secure in their beliefs and positions, they wouldn't still be so defensive and aggressive. If they were actually dealing with reality, they wouldn't need to spend obscene amounts of money on endless parties and photo opts. There are laws in nature that are more powerful than propaganda and one of them is that what goes up (on this planet--not in outer space) must come down. Gravity and reality are more powerful than BO and his hordes. Yesterday was the drunken high, today is the hangover.

We are in for very difficult times. All the feel- good hype will go on for a while, but in time it will dissipate and in its place a very naked and exposed BO will stand before us.

Bush filed an Executive Order last Friday that empowers the Director of Personnel to "re-investigate" even a president's qualifications to hold office. (Here come more lawsuits on BO's documentation. Except this time, the loop holes are closed.) Eventually we will know who BO is and eventually the truth will come out. He cannot and will not be able to meet the expectations he has created. We need to be patient and active in the meantime....

I greatly appreciate John Kass' objective analysis. I saw him a couple of times on TV and he is indeed a breath of fresh air. He and Lynn Sweet are Chicago reporters of the Old School and are not easily fooled.

I am somewhat skeptical though about Kass' assertion that Obama is aware that he is not a wizard. I do believe that at one level he is scared s---less by what he has to confront but also assumes that his so-called charm will carry him through.

"I can’t imagine Obama reading that and not retching, wondering what to do with so many adoring scribes, so dogmatically secular, yet eager to be led by political holy men, or sorcerers."

Unfortunately, I can believe it. You assume he's a normal leader, like you or like me, but if you look carefully at history here and abroad, it's not impossible that this is what his ego demands. This is just the leadership style of some people, and it's a very bad thing. Actually, I'm regretting some of my mildness yesterday on these posts after reviewing some of the inaugural coverage, because this stuff is just unadulterated evil. I don't want to be a part of it, not at all, so I guess I'll be doing a lot of cross stitch for the next four years and trying to ignore the new Emperor.

I had an (almost) former (if she doesn't wise up) friend visiting from out of town last week who keeps saying that the Republicans manipulated everyone with fear, fear, fear. I asked her what she calls Obama's proclamations (again and again) that we are in the worst shape of our entire history and on the brink of disaster? Shut her right up.
