What Next? Pedophilia?

by
Larry C. Johnson

Do you think that John Yoo, the guy who authored the Department of Justice memo justifiying torture, believes that pedophilia is okay as long as the President believes it is necessary to save the nation? That my friends, as absurd as it sounds, is the thrust of the logic underpining the arguments Woo and his buddies are making. Their assault on the traditional conservative view that the power of Federal Government should be limited is truly frightening. In the name of saving the nation they insist that international accords against torture and inhumane treatment no longer apply. They are also on board for holding American citizens in prison indefinitely without a chance to confront their accusers in court. If it is done in the name of “national security” it is okay.

It is too bad that the term “fascism” is such a hot button term, because it is a word that appears to accurately define Yoo’s views on Presidential supremacy. I guess we are resigned to labeling him a neo-conservative imperialist, because he believes that the President’s status as the Commander in Chief grants an inherent manifest destiny to wield unbridled power.

Joining Yoo’s war wagon are David Rivkin and Lee Casey, who write in an op-ed in today’s NY Times that the President can collect foreign intelligence, even in the United States, without worrying himself about pesky laws and bureaucratic hurdles.

How do they justify this? Because they believe in the myth that we live in a “new day and age” where the threats move so fast we can’t be troubled with legal contraints. According to Rivkin and Casey,

Although the administration could have sought such warrants, it chose not to for good reasons. The procedures under the surveillance act are streamlined, but nevertheless involve a number of bureaucratic steps. Furthermore, the FISA court is not a rubber stamp and may well decline to issue warrants even when wartime necessity compels surveillance. More to the point, the surveillance act was designed for the intricate “spy versus spy” world of the cold war, where move and countermove could be counted in days and hours, rather than minutes and seconds. It was not drafted to deal with the collection of intelligence involving the enemy’s military operations in wartime, when information must be put to immediate use.

I realize that Yoo is a relative youngster and was barely able to legally drink when the Soviet Union collapsed and does not remember the Cold War, but what is Rivkin’s excuse? Amnesia? The “neo-conservative imperialists” live in a fantasy world where terrorism is the most deadly, horrific threat we have ever faced. Heavens, it is far worse than anything we faced back in the good old days of the Cold War. Yes sir, we only had thousands of nuclear tipped missiles on a hair trigger pointed at each other. Let’s not forget the B-52s that were aloft with bombs in their bellies. Goodness gracious, that’s not the kind of threat that requires quick action or fail safe communication system, such as a “hotline” is it?

It would help if we could put the threat of terrorism in a proper historical perspective rather than create a fantasy land of fear. While there is no denying that the radical Muslims would like to cause us great harm, they do not have an air force with long range bombers nor do they have an armada of aircraft carriers. They also do not have submarines armed with submarine launched ballistic missiles. Their ability to attack us is greatly constrained. Even if they get their hands on one or two nuclear devices, they face significant obstacles delivering them. Let’s not ignore this threat, but neither should we surrender our civil rights to it just because we’re afraid.

Yet, night after night we are confronted with some thick headed TV reporters and pundits who repeat the nonsense that because the threat is new spying is justified. Enough already! We can accept the fact that terrorism is a threat that must be taken seriously but it should not be employed as an excuse to pursue any activity that is cloaked in the aura of “security”. If we use the fear of terrorism to excuse torture and permanent imprisonment then we are only a hop-skip-and-a-jump to making sex with children okay as long as the President believes it will keep us safe from Osama.

another great read and informative article larry! who is john yoo? never heard of him til this read.
you make some great realistic points and get us to think. thanks larry!

Damn Mr. J, you’ve done it again. I’ve argued till I’m blue in the face with people who continue to say “This(al qaeda) is the greatest threat to our country ever”. What are they smoking? Bush has continually used 9/11 to justify hia policies. I hate to say this, but 9/11 was probably the event that has made the Bush presidency. He’s run on nothing else and people still eat it up. Perhaps we’ll wake up soon. Regards and a Healthy, prosperous New Year to you and all your readers, friends and family.

The sad part is we are doing this to ourselves. UBL just sits in his cave laughing while we self-destruct.

Larry, I want to trust you when you say that there was real anxiety during the cold war, but then I think about all these same neo-cons who were in positions of power back then telling us how bad the commies were. I do realize there were real nuclear missiles pointed at eachother, but weren’t wolfy, rummy and cheney overblowing the soviets back then just as they overblow al queda now? If NBC is owned by GE, what interest does NBC have in telling the truth; a truth that could avert a war that they would otherwise profit off of both directly and indirectly. Is all of this proof that the military-industrial complex is running this country and its foreign policy? In whose interests are all these wars fought for, if the true justifications are based on lies and we receive no tangible benefit from these actions? Who is Congress listening to? I’ll tell you who. Neo-Con Zionist traitors!!

There’s a post that answers your question, What Next? over at http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/... NSA spied on its own employees, journalists, congressional contacts … I have no idea of credibility as it hasn’t hit mainstream yet, but means to me that the wheels just fell off.

“New day and age” my ass. They’re bringing another Dark Age to a generation, or more. They’re little differernt than the cruel, powermad, and hated individuals who have terrorized innocents throughout time. They may be in 21st century attire, but they are achieving results much like any good barbarians or fascists — killing, torturing, and creating fear and hatred while forging creepy alliances and amassing bloody fortunes. Every now and then I wish there really was a Hell.

    Larry,

You speak of Yoo so fondly. What the flies on the wall can tell…

Colin Powell defends the wiretaps, and was wirtetapped. Who do they have him on the phone with?

Was Colin complicit? To use as evidence only one party needs know of the wiretap. Colin Powell’s entrapment has Kept the Blair poodle on a short leash.

Powell was in South America on 9-11 meeting the deposed former King of Afghanistan and other OPEC representatives in their South American puppet countries(Petroleum World.com). That to discuss the putsch that Brewster Jennings was in place to try and nullify.

Who did they catch Colin with, what did they tap on him? How did he react once he was aware of such a fact?

Hard to ask “What Next?” they’ve tried about everything.(Skull and Bones)

More like a classic albulm cover: “Who’s next?” A picture of them all taking a piss on Institutions of Leadership and the in particular the Constitution. Walking away with their backs turned to it…

Hey Yoo- go Cheney yourself and leave my Constitution alone!

  • EasyRider

They make their own reality. While those of us in the reality-based world analyze what they have done, these guys have moved onto their next assult to create their new reality.

They have no reguard for laws and thus are able to move quickly to their next goals. Laws are for reality-based simpletons like us.

Once again Larry, you are not only correct but you state the point well, and back it up with sanity and reason.

I have been trying to educate people that the real threat to the USA (discounting Bush and his sycophants for a moment) is still Russia (and China). And economically, the EU is a FAR greater threat than any external terrorist group. Russia has been building new, very advanced ICBM’s and SLBM’s, with the help of China and the EU. I don’t know about anyone else, but the thought of China and Russia and the EU collaborating is far more scary than ANY non-proven, possible, terrorist threat.

The EU is about to put into place it’s own GPS system (Galileo) which is superior to the US GPS system (and not under US control!!) The Galileo system will be a boon for business everywhere, even US companies will benefit from it and dump GPS. Thanks to Bush, Russia now has the ONLY booster capable of launching a large payload into deep space.

The list of threats to the USA is long. And terrorism is only one item, and I don’t believe it even belongs in the top part of the list.

Here is some useful info to bear in mind. The most significant change in Russia’s defence strategy as of 2000, is the removal of the “no first-use” pledge regarding Nuclear weapons, since Bush has made first-use acceptable now.

Funny how 9/11 and the resulting “war on terror” has allowed the neo-cons to carry out their plans regarding executive power and the Middle East so perfectly. Terrorists weren’t a blip on the radar of this administration pre-9/11/01. In hindsight, that silence was deafening.

Let’s not kid ourselves. 9/11 happened for a reason. And that becomes more and more clear with every day that passes and every new scandal that is unearthed. The threat to national security is the rationale du jour for this administration to do anything it damn well pleases. For anyone to believe that this happened by coincidence is utter naivete. Cheney and company were not going to sit on their hands for 4-8 years and let slip by their long-awaited chance to re-shape the presidency and the world to fit their fantastical image. They needed a catalyst. They got it. And likely not by accident.

As John Dean states so well in his latest column today, national security has been used before to justify extra-legal spying (Nixon). And now it’s being used again. But when Bush took office in 2001, there was no national security threat. The cold war was long gone and terrorism was an occasional issue but not one that commanded great attention. Almost nine months later, that national security threat appeared in a flash, and Bush and Cheney and the neo-cons had their tables set.

They couldn’t have planned it any better. Or could they?

  • EasyRider

    Drew,
I agree they planed to aloow some terrorist attack to happen. They wanted their missile defense shield and the trillion dollars it costs for their corporate buddies.

9/11 was a shock in that it was greater than they thought the attack would be.

That is their big secret. They wanted an attack to justify the missile defense shield and a reason to attack Iraq.

We will find this out many years from now, long after Bush is gone and our nation ruined.

By the way, Bush will be staying in office long after his term ends. He will declare a National Emergency and postone elections for our safety. Funny the Iraqi people vote in the midits of car bombs and Americans willbe prevented from voting by something like Bird Flu or some other reason Bush will claim to be a threat.

  • Mr.Murder

Putins’ dominance of the market to launch satellite payloads may be the result of friendly Bush connections and the Yukos bids *cough* Kraft *cough* and others…
