“George Clinton brought on rarely seen Sly Stone with his group, and was a big hit with the troops, many of whom flocked forward to the stage.”

Funkadelic emerged in 1968 as a hippie-looking rock ‘n’ roll band in Detroit. George has always said of Funkadelic that it was “too black for white radio, too white for black radio.”

Clinton has never rejected white audiences. Or white musicians either. (Ron Bykowski, Dennis Coffey, Rick Gardner, Larry Fratangelo, Muruga Booker, Danny Bedrosian…)

Funkadelic used to gig and hang out with the MC5 and Iggy & the Stooges. In fact, George and Iggy Pop once concocted a half-baked publicity stunt whereby they’d announce that George and Iggy were going to marry each other!

In recent decades, P-Funk has had a major following in Europe, particularly Amsterdam. (Japan too, for that matter.)

In the 1980s, George declared public (to me, among others) that he thought European funk bands would carry the funk forward. He was a fan of Kajagoogoo, and he collaborated with Thomas Dolby on a few tracks.

George has also collaborated with the likes of Paul Shaffer and Warren Zevon, and he produced an early album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

P-Funk’s anti-”crossover” posture has always been about aesthetics, not race. (Compare Kool & the Gang’s “Ladies Night” to “Funky Stuff” and you’ll know what I’m talking about.)

Basically, I agree with you, JozefAL.
I like George Clinton & Funkadelic & Parliament & Bootsy & that whole era of funk music. I don’t think it was a good choice for the Heroe’s Ball. On the other hand, these groups are not as blatantly offensive as many of the rappers who came after. As far as the F- George routine–not a surprise. Early funk music embodies an ongoing pun-joke between the words funk & f—. It’s everywhere. And, in fact, it could very well have been an intra-band dig at George Clinton. But overall, it was a bad choice of bands to play for that particular ball. This should be the most traditional of all the balls. You wouldn’t want a punk or heavy metal band playing that venue either. There are heroes of all races. Let’s find something everyone is comfortable with. Or so I feel.

i see great concern about this group and that group all the while ignoring the so called bitter people clinging to their guns worshipping on sunday who are damn worried about whether they can pay their bills. i worry about them and am sick and tired of seeing people thinking they are special all the while damning their fellow americans and calling them names ranging from ho’s for women to fxxx george. i don’t like bush but i don’t like the attitudes i describe above more than that.

so please write with passion about joe sixpack in middle america who is getting screwed. then we can communicate.
