“Glinda Arrives at State”

We have tracked every activity, press briefing, and announcement by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton since she arrived at State, including the thrilled cheers of State Dept. staff when she walked into the building after her confirmation on January 22, 2009. (See “Hillary Speaks to All State Dept. Staff.”) But, boy, I don’t know how we missed this great piece at Harper’s magazine, but thanks to Truthtelling007 of CheneyWatch.org and our administrator for our NoQuarterUSA YouTube channel, we’ve got this to share with you. It’s wonderful:

Glinda Arrives at State

By Scott Horton

One thing seems clear regarding Condoleezza Rice’s stewardship of the State Department: she did not command the admiration of many of those who worked with her. The reaction of State Department employees as Hillary Clinton arrived this morning apparently bears comparison to the liberation of Paris at the end of World War II.

There are great hopes for Hillary at State. I met last week with a number of career State Department employees and was surprised when one said she was looking forward to the “Glinda Party” next week. I asked her: if Hillary was Glinda, the Good Witch of the South from the Wizard of Oz, did that make Condoleezza Rice the Wicked Witch of the West?

“You’re on to it,” she said. Another person pointed out to me that after Rice’s arrival in 2005 the tone of official State Department publications changed; they began to praise and glorify Rice. “No prior secretary,” said the twenty-year veteran, “did anything like this.”

Hillary’s message to her new team at State points to a major change at a department that under Rice issued doctrine and commanded complete personal loyalty. Here’s Eric Kleefeld’s report of her remarks:

This is going to be a challenging time, and it will require 21st-century tools and solutions to meet our problems and seize our opportunities. I’m gonna be asking a lot of you, I want you to think outside the proverbial box. I want you to give me the best advice you can, I want you to understand there is nothing that I welcome more than a good debate, and the kind of dialogue that will make us better.

Aren’t we proud.

  • Judy L. NC

    Wicked Witch of the West?

    Bwahahaha!

    Of COURSE, we’re proud, Susan.

This is leadership. O needs a briefing.

Can’t we go beyond characterizing women in leadership position as good and bad witches? This is just so amazingly sexist that I just have to wonder where the last 40 years of progress went. And these are supposedly educated and professional government servants who should be used to framing people in less perjorative terms.

  • Ferd Berfle

This is just so amazingly sexist that I just have to wonder where the last 40 years of progress went.

Unfortunately, Generation Duh came along and undid most of the advances made by women through participation in such liberating activities as manning the ubiquitous 900 phone lines and populating the video rubbish known as “Girls Gone Something or Other”.

    It is beyond sad.

  • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

I would have posted the video I have that announced this, but it was Keith Olbermann referring to the article, so I left it to the article to tell the tail.

Unless you really need the video….

something about KO using the word witch…just sounds like enabling…ya know?

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Totally. We’ll skip that one. So, I hear that KO did pre-game yesterday on NBC? How much did those ratings fall?

  • avwrobel

Agree on all of it. Our girl’s off to great start. By the way on NBC this morning Matt Lauer pointed out to Obambi in his ‘interview’ that Obambi has achieved rock star status. I was waiting for Obambi to say “Yup, and I have the MSM like you to thank for making an empty suit like me such a big star” But no luck there.

Would it be better if the employee characterized it as Dumbledore and Voldemort? There are only two genders from which to choose one’s metaphors sometimes. Not everything is sexist.

  • C.S.

So proud! It is great to have anyone attached to our democratic government (that is small d word, no political party attached) that not only has the ability to lead but can actually inspire loyalty and enthusiasm in others for the job they do.

How long will it last? Mr. Soertoro/Obama (still no confirmation of his legal name) is not fond of “Glindas” stealing his spotlight so which will prevail; his need for a “legacy” or his ego?

    Indeed, yes we are !!

    LOL
Yeah, maybe thats why I missed the big play…a 100 yard interception return.
    Go Steelers!

I probably won’t tune into a Super Bowl until the New Orleans Saints are in it, aka hell froze over. (praying for snow)

Can’t we go beyond characterizing women in leadership position as good and bad witches?

Why don’t you ask that guy sitting in Our Oval Office where the last 40 years of progress has gone since the word that rhymes with Glinda’s witch classification was tossed around quite frequently by Obama and his supporters during the 2008 selection wars campaign. Don’t real leaders lead by example anymore? Or does this one prefer to lead his minions by pejorative jive street talk messages?

  • Steve1

t is such a contrast between, SOS Clinton’s no-nonsense, let’s work together, take care of business approach at State! Compared to Barry Soetoro’s Drama Queen action over at the White House. Man, can we say Prez for SOS Clinton, 2012! Soetoro is already in deep shit with the welfare package pending in the Senate.

  • Steve1

    It…

  • Sassy

    “dialogue and debate”
Those at the State Department did not get that message from Secretary Rice, if Richard Clark is believable.
Secretary Clinton will need the loyalty of her staff and fellow diplomats when the “push back” starts…and it will!
    Stay on course, Madame Secretary!

  • Queenie

Remember it was the same Matt Lauer that drooled all over himself for Bush and cheney..in fact he may have needed a diaper change when he spoke of Bush and Cheney..its why i will never watch that chump..ever..but i don’t understand how people so quickly forget how these same sob’s that gave the big slobber for bush are now doing the same slobber job for O man..how do Americans not see it?????????

O man is the continuation of the New World Order..just as Leo Strauss planned.

Unfortunately, those who refuse to read and read history , they repeat the crap for those of us who do pay attention, and we will suffer along with the idiots!

As for me..I will leave this country before it falls completely!

  • Eddie

That is not a great piece at Harper’s. Scott Horton hates Hillary. Scott Horton, like Frank Rich, appears to have friends that only he can see.
Scott Horton’s friends notes Hillary and Condi — one is a ‘good’ witch, the other is a ‘bad’ witch.
No, it’s not a damn compliment

  • http://tojo toni

    “Generation Duh”….love it :)

  • ChooChooMagoo

    Hey Susan.

You always seem to find these overlooked gems. Hillary as Glinda the Good Witch of the South and Condi as the Wicked Witch of the West- I totally see it. I hope Pat does a cartoon on this. Wow. I needed a good smile for today. Thanks.

  • susan h

Thanks Susan for this article. Reading Hillary’s words to her staff brought tears to my eyes. She is one h___ of a leader.

  • Ferd Berfle

There are only two genders from which to choose one’s metaphors sometimes. Not everything is sexist.

Cool, so, following your lead, I’m sure my fellow men won’t mind if they are characterized as:

    good bastards versus bad bastards,
Or better, good Neanderthals versus bad Neanderthals,
Or best, good knuckle-draggers versus bad knuckle-draggers?

  • Ferd Berfle

Don’t real leaders lead by example anymore? Or does this one prefer to lead his minions by pejorative jive street talk messages?

Unfortunately the real leaders have been assigned secondary roles in our government, with the alleged leaders that were elected quite ready to lead the 69,000,000 lemmings right off the next cliff up ahead on the extreme left.

  • Ferd Berfle

No, it’s not a damn compliment

It certainly isn’t. One could use the same sort of pejorative terms for the previous president and the current one, with the lone exception being that the term “good” would appear nowhere since the operative adjectives would be bad and worse.

  • http://sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

I’m just saying I think the metaphor was more about two people who are seen (by this particular State Dept employee) as some magical, powerful forces going out & coming in. I don’t think the speaker meant to slam women; she/he was trying to express the change in atmosphere at the State Dept. They are happy to see Clinton because she projects beneficence.

  • Ferd Berfle

Yeah, I see your point. I suppose my concern is the historic occurrences around the term, though far removed, are still unpleasant and not really complimentary in that context.

  • Tess

I’m reading that Hillary’s job as SoS is being minimized constantly, as one special envoy after another is appointed. Reading those releases carefully, I can’t see that the SoS is appointing them. Samantha Power (whom the Brits call “lightweight”, and who called Hillary “a monster”) is back in an important job. And now, when Hillary tried for the China portfolio, it will stay with the SecTreas., under “trade”. Read that as how much $$ we owe them, also that IMO the O ony appointed Hillary to appease the likes of us.
If anyone can create order out of this and make the job a success, it’s Hillary.

  • Belle Gardens

Those kids, though, were the soccer kids, every single thing they did was programmed for them, someone else making the decisions every single moment of their lives.

They never learned to think independently, or rebel, their need to differentiate manifesting in passive-aggressive behavior.

(I had a very good friend who insisted her children, at the very tender age of seven, learn golf (in addition to soccer), ostensibley to further their potential in the corporate market place when they became of age. She would also speak wistfully of her deep desire her children be tall, with white teeth, because tall people with white teeth have it best in corporate America.

All this, and the kids were subkect to SAT drills from birth. Ok, not birth, kindergarten: it’s never too early to start vocab, you know…)

So, when someone comes along to sell them a bill of goods, whether Rush or Obama, they bite.

Her kids, btw, are doing OK, but nothing extraordinary — probably voted Obama, though.

  • Belle Gardens

O man is the continuation of the New World Order..just as Leo Strauss planned

    YES, THEY CAN?

THEY ARE THE CHANGE THEY’VE BEEN WAITING FOR?

Does the NWO need a comapaign manager?

    (I’m kidding, sorry)…

  • Ldyoung

Yes, I am VERY proud of Hilary. I am more concerned that she will not be allowed to truly weigh-in on areas of major concern — that her brilliance will be minimized. But we know how feisty she is — so I am betting on HER for now! :-)

  • Ferd Berfle

Unfortunately, those who refuse to read and read history , they repeat the crap for those of us who do pay attention, and we will suffer along with the idiots!

Yep, the unwashed herd is leading the charge straight for the cliff on the far left after having narrowly missed the last cliff on the far right.

Can I get out of this rodeo for morons now?

    Hey, Ferd –

I just approved your comment. I hope you saw the post SusanUnPC did yesterday abt this darn spam filter – it has gotten SUPER sensitive. But DON’T re-send your comment. If it doesn’t show up and one of us isn’t around to rescue it, email Susan. The filter is SUPPOSED to learn the error of its ways, but it won’t if the same comment is re-submitted.

    Sorry for the inconvenience!!

  • Ferd Berfle

    Sorry for the inconvenience!!

LOL. It was no inconvenience. I just wonder sometimes which buzzword(s) kicked it into overdrive. The other day it appeared to be the word philosophy. Who knows?

  • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

Beats me – it threw one of my comments into Spam, too! :-)

Anyway, I know it disrupts the flow of the “conversation,” and hopefully, it will mellow out soon!

  • ChooChooMagoo

    Hey Ferd –

    Rodeo for Morons

Too Too funny. The imagination runs wild.

  • ChooChooMagoo

I agree SNK, I image the state depart and government had changed so dramatically with the Bush admin, that many people working there probably felt like the were in the land of Oz. And collectively wishing the could click there red shoes and go back home to Kansas. At least that was my take.
