With new producer, ‘Hardball’ promises more ‘whimsy’

John Reiss, the brand-new executive producer of “Hardball” with Chris Matthews on MSNBC, declares, “Oh, you won’t even recognize [the show]” after he gets done with it.

That’s in jest. More seriously, he says, “It’s not that I’m coming in to rescue it. It’s the standard for political shows.

You’re not going to go, ‘Where is my “Hardball?” ’ ”
But Reiss, who has worked for the likes of Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw, still has ideas on how to improve the show. While he won’t reveal his secret plans just yet, he says, “What you’re going to see is a lot more branding on the show. We’re going to try to do an even better job at having recognizable segments on the broadcast.”

Reiss also wants to make the most of what he calls Matthews’s fabulous sense of humor. “I want to take advantage of that,” he says. “I want to add a little whimsy to the broadcast. You don’t want to do 60 minutes of vegetables. It doesn’t have to be served up as old-style cough medicine.”

Dear Bernie,

Thanks for the email links. I’ve written to them all, as well as signing a petition from Emily’s list, etc.

You made this easy, and I was able to cover far more ground. No question we must object to the junk trash talk that masquerades as news to feed the 24/7 news cycle mania.

But the lack of impulse control I witnessed was scary, and it didn’t have that much to do with Clinton. So I thank you again for letting us all do something other than complain to each other.

Matthews is probably impotent. We know he has poor impulse control, and his emphasis on “looks” and the humiliating remarks aimed at women are indications of his self loathing and narcissism.

He can’t stop shrieking and acting out, but no one is stopping him.

That CNBC tolerates this is the real problem.

Matthews sickens me. Clinton aside…the lies, contradictory made up excuses for reportage, and his insulting and disrespectful sexist rants have turned me off completely.

Also, Emily’s List has a huge petition drive to CNBC and their sponsors demanding an apology for his pathologically hostile and toxic behavior.

A lot of signatures have been sent to CNBC, but the cynicism and habits of sexism die hard.

You are soooo right.
I just said in a family discussion that “Tip” O’Neill would be turning around in his grave could he listen to his former assistant’s bigoted, Clinton-hating, gender-hating, and a whole lot of other nonsense.

If this guy Imus was driven off the air by MSNBC for his racial offenses, why in heaven does this guy remain in place. Obviously, gender and partisan bias does not matter.

Actually, though, I haven’t seen a really good fabrication since the last time I dealt with Mossad. Now there were some guys who knew how to make shit up. Not just quantity, but quality, too.
