Krugman Has More On “Reagan and Obama”

Update: The Republicans were the party of ideas for the last 10 to 15 years, because they were challenging conventional wisdom? OK, now I’m completely boggled. Is Obama talking about the same GOP I know — the Republican party of Tom DeLay and George Bush? The party in which candidates compete to see who can do the best Reagan impersonation? This is the party that’s challenging conventional wisdom? What’s going on here?

Yesterday, Krugman referred his readers directly to Rick Perlstein, “our premier historian of the rise of modern movement conservatism.”

May I just add that the person’s Daily Kos diary to whom Dr. Krugman links in his update today is my own?

Obama is referencing the optimism of the Reagan years, but is ignoring the core principles of why that illusion worked. Reagan was an actor being played like a fiddle by the puppet masters. By buying into the surface illusion, Barack sadly sets himself up to be manipulated by the same people in the same way. I don’t believe that we can elect a president to gallop off and solve all of our problems. That’s not Obama’s message exactly, but that’s what it will boil down to if the people that he is engaging now get disappointed by the realities and compromises of politics and walk away from that disappointment, or worse get angry and susceptible to the spin-masters of the media.

Obama’s question is “why can’t we all just get along?” The answer is because we are at war. Not Iraq, but the cold civil war that has been waged against the American People by movement conservatives since the 1970′s. We will only win when we stand up and fight.

Obama’s positive evocation of Reagan as a successful president is pathetic and democrats should hold him responsibe for this.

He has been endorsed by the 2 ultra right conservative newspapers in Nevada. As he heads to California he is building his case for Regan as he hopes to find Reagan Republicans and Democrats
in a State where Regan is still popular.

Obama is not my idea of what a Democrat should be.

Apparenly you are willing to overlook Obama’s voting record on nuclear energy,credit card interest rates, and loan guarantees for Nuclear Power Plant Providers. Exelon is deeply into Nuclear Power Management, and donated $74,350.00 to Obama’s campaign.

In endorsing him it is obvious that you have not accessed his votes negative to the working person’s interest. Or for that matter you’ve failed to access his vote record in Illinois.

His campaign Financial Director is Penny Pritzker of the Chicago Pritzker Machine. Multi billionaire Pritzker’s holdings are vast into Medical equip., Nursing Homes, Savings & Loans, etc.,etc.

When asked about who the donors will be at his upcoming fundraisers, Penny Pritzker refuses to divulge any names.

Yeah, Senator Leahy just endorsed Obama too. In fact, Obama has had a string of important endorsements lately. But I see those endorsements less as a vote for Obama and more as a vote against Clinton. Because many people are concerned about the Clinton baggage returning to the White House, and how that might stall any progress.

Meanwhile, Obama is portraying himself as to the right of Clinton. His recent remarks about Reagan’s supposed legacy is a case in point. Obama may win points with Californians by praising Reagan, especially Republicans and Independents who can’t support any of the GOP candidates. But he’s also definitely losing points with progressive Democrats, such as me. Because I can’t see how Obama can be the candidate for change while he’s praising the values and accomplishments of Reagan, say, which stands for the opposite.

In fairness, Obama is probably referring to Reagan’s optimism….ugh, I just don’t see Reagan as a positive model for bridging the GOP/Dem divide.

If I hear Saint Obama slamming the fights of the sixties one more time I will explode. He would not be where he is without those of us who were willing to fight those fights. Of course it was acrimonious – these were extremely important issues. Obama thinks that’s all over? So we no longer need to fight against desastrous wars, racism, sexism, etc.? We should just all hold hands and sing Kumbaya, I guess. Good thing for Obama we did not settle for that. What an arrogant, holier-than-thou position to take. And what a way to be a uniter – by insulting a large part of your own party!

As for his calling Reagan a successful president, that is an insult to ALL Democrats. We stand in direct opposition to Reagan’s policies which have been a disaster for our country. Because people are afraid to criticise Reagan no one is pointing out that he was the one that took our country off the road to energy independence, he was the one who legitimized the crackpot idea of supply side economics that ballooned our debt, that he trashed the environment, pushed for deregulation that lead to disasters like the costly Savings and Loan scandal, promoted policies that were hostile to the poor and working class and much, much more.
Bush has been even more successful in implementing Reagan’s radical policies which is why our country is in such trouble today. It is about time we started to speak honestly about the Reagan legacy. Even some Republicans are beginning to do this. Obama fawning over Reagan sets this process back.

Clearly Obama does not understand that there is a big difference between being a successful politician and a successful president. Reagan was the former, but no man who damages our country the way he did should ever be called a successful president. That is outrageous!

Obama should be excoriated for envoking Regan as transcendental.. “Mr. Sunny”, Regan himself, enforced deregulation as we now know it. His war on government was part of the regressive policies that continue to this day.

Obama is gettin a free press pass. Nevada’s voters are not aware that the Bill offered to kill Nuclear Power Plant Operators’ loan guarantees, got a FOR vote from Obama.

Both you and Bernie have it right. In the 50′s 60′s and 70′s I was a hardworking Advertising Executive, and Madison Avenue’s dress codes prevailed.

During my 30 yrs toiling in Advertising I could never be considered dirty, immoral, and have never taken drugs. This is a way of “framing” progressives as unpatriotic and disloyal.

GOP and Karl Rove’s wordframes are always used and repeated to mischaracterize “liberals” as negatively as possibe.

Obama’s efforts to connect to the Republican Party, specifically Bush, and Dick Cheney, of the Halliburton Company, dates back to the Presidents Grandfather, Prescott Bush, and indeed Cheney was once an executive officer of Halliburton.

Halliburton was scheduled to take control of the Dubai Ports in The United Arab Emiirate. The deal was canceled when Bush was unable to affect the transfer of the American Ports.

3. Obam said he spoke fluent Indonesian as a child — Reality: . . . Obama has claimed on numerous occasions to have become fluent in Indonesian in six months. Yet another Phi Beta Krakatau lie from Obama. Those who knew him disputed that during recent interviews. Israel la Pareira Darmawan, Obama’s 1st-grade teacher, said she attempted to help him learn the Indonesian language by going over pronunciation and vowel sounds. Truth-be-told: Obama’s Indonesian teachers say Kaku-Pooh.

4. Obam said he was involved in community asbestos and housing project for the poor — Reality: . . . Didn’t happen. This was the basis for Barack and Michelle’s claim, that he was a community activist on the South and East Side of Chicago.
