Patrick Fitzgerald Ties Obama to Rezko Indictments

Do you recall “Obama, His Lobbyists and His Cronies,” my January 11th piece on ABC News’s reports on Barack Obama’s long associations with — and innumerable financial, legal and real estate ties — to Tony Rezko, “who goes on trial February 25th for ‘extortion and fraud charges, which include shakedown allegations involving an Illinois pension fund’”?

ABC News’s Brian Ross said, at the time, that Obama was not named in the 73-page indictment. Today, however, the Chicago Sun-Times — “Sun-Times Exclusive: Obama surfaces in Rekzo’s federal corruption case” — reveals that:

Source confirmed Obama is the unnamed “political candidate” referred to in document which outlines case against Rezko

The Sun-Times reports:

Obama is not named in the Dec. 21 court document. But a source … confirmed that Obama is the unnamed “political candidate” referred to in a section of the document that accuses Rezko of orchestrating a scheme in which a firm hired to handle state teacher pension investments first had to pay $250,000 in “sham” finder’s fees. From that money, $10,000 was donated to Obama’s successful run for the Senate in the name of a Rezko business associate, according to the court filing and the source.

Rezko, who was part of Obama’s senatorial finance committee, also is accused of directing “at least one other individual” to donate money to Obama and then reimbursing that individual — in possible violation of federal election law.

A spokesman for U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald declined to comment.

Obama … has moved to distance himself from Rezko since his longtime friend and supporter was indicted in October 2006. After news reports that Obama had engaged in a real estate transaction with Rezko’s wife at a time Tony Rezko was known to be under investigation, the senator called the episode “boneheaded” and “a mistake.” … [Yeah, right. Below, I'VE POSTED BACKGROUND on Obama's home purchase tied to Resko and his wife.]

Other key revelations in the Sun-Times story today are Obama’s feeble attempts to deny knowledge of shady deals, improper campaign donations, and Rezko’s reputation as a slumlord (all while Obama worked for the law firm that represented Rezko’s interests in low-income housing developments):

  • Obama denies knowing Joseph Aramanda — named as “Individual D” in the indictment, and who received $250,000 in “sham” finder’s fees “demanded by Rezko” — but “Obama’s office hired Aramanda’s son as an intern in 2005, at Rezko’s urging,” reports the Sun-Times.
  • “Rezko is one of Obama’s earliest political patrons,” and although Obama claims he’s only received $60,000 from Rezko’s fundraising, the Sun-Times found that “[i]n 13 years in politics, Obama has gotten at least $168,000 in campaign donations from Rezko, his family and business associates.”
  • Rezko is an infamous slumlord, although — despite having worked on dozens of real estate deals that benefited his client Rezko — Obama “said he was unaware of problems with the buildings and minimized the legal work he’d done.” (So much for the “little people.”)

I wonder if ABC’s Brian Ross has been on the phone all morning, working his own sources for further background on the Sun-Times‘s discovery that Obama is indeed the unnamed “political candidate” in Fitzgerald’s indictment. Here’s Brian Ross’s video from January 10th — when Ross didn’t know that Obama was the unnamed candidate in the indictment. And, below, there’s more from the Sun-Times story along with more background on Tony Rezko:

Here’s the background on Obama’s purchase of his family’s current home in Chicago, along with some of the story on his lengthy history of associations with Rezko:

Obama’s relationship with Rezko dates to 1990, when Obama, then a Harvard law student, interviewed for a job with Rezko’s development company, Rezmar Corp. Obama turned down the job, instead going to work for a small Chicago law firm — Davis Miner Barnhill. That firm did work on more than a dozen low-income housing projects Rezmar rehabbed with government funds.

Eleven Rezmar buildings were in the state Senate district Obama represented between 1996 and 2004. Many of the buildings ended up in foreclosure, with tenants living in squalid conditions, the Sun-Times reported last year. In one instance, Rezko’s company left tenants without heat for five weeks. Obama said he was unaware of problems with the buildings and minimized the legal work he’d done.

Obama’s relationship with Rezko grew closer in June 2005, when Obama and Rezko’s wife bought adjoining real estate parcels from a doctor in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood. Obama paid $1.65 million for the doctor’s mansion, while Rezko’s wife paid $625,000 for the vacant lot next door. Obama’s purchase price was $300,000 below the asking price; Rezko’s wife paid full price.

Six months later, Obama paid Rita Rezko $104,500 for one-sixth of the vacant lot, which he bought to expand his yard. In November 2006, he expressed regret about the transaction.

“It was a mistake to have been engaged with him at all in this or any other personal business dealing that would allow him, or anyone else,” Obama said, “to believe that he had done me a favor.”

Yeah, right. The LeftCoaster has more on Obama’s house purchase in “Obama Can’t Shake Connections To Chicago Insider In Trouble With FBI“:

In October of 2006 it was revealed that Rezko helped Obama purchase a home for hundreds of thousands of dollars below the market value, while Rezko bought the lot next door. Illinois residents remember well Obama saying he didn’t recall the conversations with Rezko, then remembered after Chicago papers started examining the deal, then admitted it was a “bone-headed mistake” on ABC. [As the YouTube video shows, Obama has had a variety of "explanations" for his longtime association with Rezko.]

And here is a list of the Chicago Sun-Times‘s related stories:

While I agree that his relationship with Rezko is troubling, and at some point might be moreso, at the moment it still looks like Obama is in the clear. His judgement in this issue has been pretty bad. Chicago politics are a tough place to get ahead without being touched by scandal, however.

Hopefully, journalists will keep digging into this.

Obama may be the unnamed “political candidate” in the 78-page prosecution document, but Obama hasn’t been accused of any wrongdoing as far as I know. Nor is Obama alone in receiving illegal contributions: As both Hillary Clinton and John Edwards have also encountered fundraisers who’ve been charged with making illegal contributions. For example: Clinton returned over $800,000 in contributions linked to Norman Hsu, who’s facing federal fraud charges in NY.

Obama has reportedly given the over $40,000 in contributions linked to Rezko to charity. None of the contributions, by the way, were for Obama’s current presidential campaign.

P.S. I’m not an Obama-ite. I support all three top Democratic candidates and will gladly vote for whomever wins the Dem nomination.

Don’t forget about Obama’s Thursday night poker parties with Lobbiests when he was in the State Senate. The Lobbiests wrote his bills. There ain’t nothing new about Obama. Same old corrupt politician. Tells you fairytales and robs you blind.

      HI LESLIE,

REGARDING THE POLITICAL DONATIONS RETURNED BY OBAMA. HE CLAIMS HE HAD NO RECORD OF THE INDIVIDUAL NAMES AND AMOUNTS. AFTER REZKO WAS INDICTED, OBAMA BEGAN DONATING REZKO AND OTHER SHADY CHARACTERS CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHARITY. FIRST CLAIMING IT WAS $50 OR $60,000, THEN ADMITTING IT WAS MORE LIKE $2 TO $250,000. OBAMA DONATED (IN INCREMENTS) BUT “BUNDLED” THE AMOUNTS TOGETHER. BY DONATING TO “CHARITY” OBAMA WAS NOT REQUIRED TO PROVIDE NAMES AND AMOUNTS FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTOR. HILLARY CLINTON RETURNED HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO HSU. AT LENGTH, SHE WAS REQUIRED TO ANSWER EXTENSIVE QUESTIONING. OBAMA SHOULD BE MADE TO DO THE SAME. THE CORRUPTION TRIAL OF TONY REZKO AND OTHERS WILL REVEAL ADDITIONAL FACTS AS IT PROCEEDS. AT THIS POINT IT APPEARS THAT TONY REZKO AND HIS CIRCLE OF FRIENDS AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATES APPLIED FOR GOVERNMENT GRANTS, STATE FINANCING AND TAX BREAKS FOR LOW INCOME HOUSING. REZKO AND OTHERS RECEIVED HUGE FEES, BRIBES AND PAYOFFS, TAKING THEIR “CUTS” OFF THE TOP. WITHIN A FEW SHORT YEARS, THE LOW INCOME HOUSING FOR THE POOR WAS LEFT BOARDED UP AND IN SHAMBLES. REZKO AND FRIENDS SPECIALIZED IN PAYOFFS THROUGH THIRD PARTIES. IT’S NO WONDER THE FBI UNDERCOVER TITLE FOR THIS INVESTIGATION IS “OPERATION BOARD GAMES”. AS A PERSON, I LIKE SENATOR OBAMA, HOWEVER AS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, I QUESTION HIS CREDIBILITY AND HIS JUDGEMENT. THIS IS THE HIGHEST POST IN AMERICA AND HE NEEDS TO LEVEL WITH AMERICANS. I WOULDN’T WANT TO SEE A CANDIDATE ELECTED PRESIDENT (NO MATTER WHO IT IS) AND 6 MONTHS LATER SPEND HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR AN IMPEACHMENT.
I ENJOYED YOUR EMAIL, AT LEAST YOU’RE GIVING THIS YOUR ATTENTION.

So “Whitewater” and “Travelgate” have taught us nothing?

Every political figure, when they gain traction, gets accused of such things. Usually the fiction is much more widely repeated than the facts.

This is old news, about something that happened in the past. The only purpose for recycling it now is to try to affect his candidacy. I noticed you did NOT quote from the UPI story, which offered this:

Despite the allegations from the source that Obama is that unnamed “candidate,” the Illinois senator has not been accused of any wrongdoing and is not named in a court document from the case.

Susan, I have enormous respect for you and consider you a friend. But I would caution you not to wave theories and allegations, or this site becomes no more than any other blog on the ‘net. If you want respect as a source of truth, not propaganda, you have to walk a more careful line here.

        MANA FROM HAVANA

NY POST, 2000 – Hillary Rodham Clinton’s Senate campaign returned $22,000 in “soft money” to a businesswoman linked to a Democratic campaign contribution from a drug smuggler in Havana. The donation by Vivian Mannerud Verble, first reported by The Post, was the largest single contribution received by Clinton’s soft-money committee. Verble, whose company runs charter flights between Cuba and Miami, also served as the fund-raising intermediary between Jorge Cabrera and the Democratic National Committee in 1995, according to congressional investigators. The probers reportedly learned that Cabrera cut a $20,000 check to the DNC from a bank account in which he also kept profits from his lucrative cocaine trade. The DNC eventually returned the money, while Cabrera pleaded guilty to importing 6,000 pounds of cocaine into the United States. He is serving a 19-year federal prison sentence in Florida . . . Although Verble was never charged with any criminal wrongdoing, she was at the center of one of the most embarrassing fund-raising scandals in the Clinton administration..

Saving Hillary, at Least for Now

    By Robert Parry
    January 18, 2008

In December and early January – as Hillary Clinton’s lead in the Democratic presidential race evaporated and especially after she lost the Iowa caucuses – her panicked supporters played nearly every card in their political deck to salvage the dream of putting a second Clinton in the White House.

Sen. Clinton and her feminist backers appealed to women to get behind one of their own; Clinton operatives insinuated that Barack Obama’s youthful drug use would make him unelectable; and former President Bill Clinton pulled a page from Karl Rove’s playbook in attacking Obama on a perceived strength, his early opposition to the Iraq War.

At least in the short term, the hardball strategy worked, aided by some political luck. But central to this Clinton comeback was a readiness to do whatever was necessary, from seeking sympathy to sliming an opponent.

On Jan. 7, a day before the New Hampshire primary, Sen. Clinton played the sympathy card as her voice cracked in responding to a question about how she managed to hold up during a grueling campaign. …

Cee, I can live with your devotion to all things Obama, but yours is the strangest take on Steinem’s op-ed I’ve seen, and I’ve never seen it anywhere else. She is perhaps the greatest living expert on the history of women’s rights, and has every right to speak out on misogyny. I read her column, and saw nowhere where she wrote like a victim, let alone comparing women’s issues to black issues.

        • norris morris

Gloria Steinem is a true role model and leader in the women’s movement and one of the most outstanding and credible spokeswomen for women of our time.

To suggest that Steinem sees herself or women as victims is to misunderstand her work in the cause of women’s liberation for the past 30 years.

She has been in the forefront regarding empowering women and educating and mentoring them through her lifetime’s work of enlightened
          engagement.

Her accomplishments are so vast that I urge you to Google her Bio and/or read her books and learn how positive and potent she feels women can be in the social/political context.

Your Obama approval is such that you are labelling one of the true heroines of our time with a baseless charge construed from your bias and not on the facts. Apparently you have never heard Gloria Steinem’s inspirational messages to women [and men], read her books or articles, but because she endorses Hillary you are anxious to smear her of exactly what she has fought for all her life.

Obama’s friendship and donation of $4200 to Joe Lieberman to help him defeat Lamont when Joe
ran as Independent in Conn is just one of the tidbits you refuse to acknowledge or even question. Google.

You cannot go unchallenged in making a rotten and false accusation about one of the leading progressive women of our time.

        • Cee

          Susan,

          Projection.

          I don’t have a devotion to Obama.

Your constant posting about Hillary is an example of devotion. You question nothing that she has done or will do.

You’re going to hate this. I’m not a feminist. Never have been and have no respect for Steinham. I hate what people like her have done to devalue men.

Now back to the topic regarding what Steinham has done

AMY GOODMAN: Melissa Harris-Lacewell, your thoughts on this discussion about race and gender?

MELISSA HARRIS-LACEWELL: Well, I mean, honestly, I’m appalled by the parallel that Ms. Steinem draws in the beginning part of the New York Times article. What she’s trying to do there is to make a claim towards sort of bringing in black women into a coalition around questions of gender and asking us to ignore the ways in which race and gender intersect. This is actually a standard problem of second-wave feminism, which, although there have been twenty-five years now—oh, going on forty years, actually, of African American women pushing back against this, have really failed to think about the ways in which trying to appropriate black women’s lives’ experience in that way is really offensive, actually.

And so, when Steinem suggests, for example, in that article that Obama is a lawyer married to another lawyer and to suggest that, for example, Hillary Clinton represents some kind of sort of breakthrough in questions of gender, I think that ignores an entire history in which white women have in fact been in the White House. They’ve been there as an attachment to white male patriarchal power. It’s the same way that Hillary Clinton is now making a claim towards experience. It’s not her experience. It’s her experience married to, connected to, climbing up on white male patriarchy. This is exactly the ways in which this kind of system actually silences questions of gender that are more complicated than simply sort of putting white women in positions of power and then claiming women’s issues are cared for.

Now, what I know from the work that I’ve done on the Obama campaign is that there are tens of thousands of extremely hard-working white men and women, as well as black men and women, as well as actually a huge multiracial and interethnic coalition of people working for Barack Obama. And so, for Steinem to sort of make this very clear race and gender dichotomy that she does in that New York Times op-ed piece, I think it’s the very worst of second-wave feminism.

as to the race card … lets not forget it was obama supporters who played the card initially as they sought to explain hillary’s win in NH. the bradley effect was trotted out for a reason … an excuse. finally, it was around this time, i heard a few obama supporters bemoaning the clinton machine … charges of being too well orgainized, having special relationships with state and local democratic organizations and being too close to local unions are just a few of the complaints. well excuse me … isnt a campaign first and foremost about having an effective political machine. i think this criticsm is most silly.

Those were bogus scandals cooked up by the same crowd who later smeared Kerry and Gore with bald-faced lies that our media shrugged off. The charges about Obama are not coming from Democrats. That is what Republicans do. Have you missed how they are smearing each other in South Carolina? McCain is being Swiftboated by right-wing “Christians” who accuse him of selling out his fellow POW’s to get released early. The truth is he refused to be released ahead of the others when it was offered to him. There is NOTHING to compare to this on the Democratic side.
I don’t think from what is known about Obama that it is a big deal, although he did buy that house with his help AFTER it became well known that there were serious charges that Rezko was corrupt, so he showed really bad judgement as he now admits.
What galls me is that the media – and many Democrats who support Obama – would absolutely crucify the Clintons for anything like this. They were all over the fact that one of Hillary’s big donors, Norman Hsu was found to be corrupt. What they usually conveniently overlooked was that Hsu was a big donor for a lot of Democrats and none of them were blamed for not knowing about he was corrupt. If the media were willing to investigate, there is no doubt that every politician has some donors who are crooks. If we don’t like it we need to fight for publicly funded campaigns.

You are kidding yourself. I’m a liberal democrat…alll my life.

Obama screwed his own people as he was advantaged by his patron…..for years. He did NOT represent his constituents, so for years and years he saw forclosures, neglect, and more.Never represented them.

If you are too blind to look at the entire Obama dossier than you are so biased nothing would matter to you.

This is not coming from the right wing. It will.
The right wing will find all of the records he says he never saved from Illinois legislature as it wasn’t relevant? And you think this answer qualifies him to be president? Believe me, the right will get it all and save every morsel including what is obviously there. The permit ok’s and financials on properties in foreclosure, and the continued Obama approval of even more
subsidized proprerties. Thousands of apartments were intentionally foreclosed and intil US Senate run when Obama took hundreds of thousands from Rezko.

This is not a plot. If there is nothing to it, Obama should have answered all the questions asked by papers and others. He needs to be interviewed and speak up.

I’m sick about this as he’s considered this pure iconic figure. Not the case. And, what community work did he do? When, what, with whom, and where, and EXACTLY WHAT was accomplished? None of us knows as he hasn’t been specific about ANYTHING.

      4 words — OBAMA IS A FRAUD

  • elizabeth

THANK YOU SUSAN! I have been pulling my hair out at the idea that the media and everyone believes him to be the savior candidate. I penned a note to Larry re Obama and titled it Obama Nausea. I was simply asking Larry if he could please awaken more folks to the fraud that Obama is. Before Hillary won NH, Air America was fawning all over him as well, they totally bought into the hype. Thank you for all your work, avid reader!

Thank YOU, Elizabeth. It’s a lot of work, and requires a lot of tracking of old and new stories.

What bothers me most is that Obama and his law firm represented Rezko in many public housing projects that used public money for their construction — and that Rezko is an infamous slumlord — but that now Obama pretends not to know about Rezko’s terrible mistreatment of his tenants. How naive does he think we are?

      • elizabeth

That is exactly my point, naive indeed some of us are not. I am so grateful for all of your work, along with larry, to inform us about the truth of Obama’s past relationships etc. It will continue to be interesting to follow-again thank you so much for all of your hard and dedication to the truth!

I too have read all the SunTimes reports months ago and still wonder how and why the democratic establishment has allowed a black to permit his patron to screw the poorest of his people with governmnent subsidies and pensionn dollars. It’s immoral to nth degree, and allow him to run!!!!!

Obama thought he was under the radar as he ony took and avoided action, he didn’t do the deed directly,

This has made me ill. Edwards looks better than ever.

yeah people need to wake up.
