“Boycott Chuck Norris!” Open Thread

elephants.jpgIn his regular “Republican-On-Republican Action” slot, Time mag blogger Mark Halperin — yes, he runs a larger version of that photo every time (and it cracks me up every time) — has this smokin’ hot news: “Thompson Spokesman Leads Norris Boycott: With candidate gone, former aide Darrel Ng helps launch BoycottChuckNorris.com to advocate shunning Norris-endorsed products, those who advertise on ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’. Read release here.” Halperin asks if this is a manifestation “of long-running frustration by Team Thompson with Huckabee’s rise.” Think so?

Here’s another Team Obama flub: Two hours before Obama hosted an economic forum today, his campaign released a statement of what was said by participants in the forum. I kid you not.

/UPDATE/ In case you haven’t seen it, we’ve added a feature from MyDD, which is a current, dynamically-updated delegate count for both the Republican and Democratic presidential races. It’s in the narrow right column, just above the Blogroll. /END UPDATE/

Is this the creepiest video from last night’s GOP debate? MyDD‘s Todd Beeton thinks so:

WTF? Anyone catch a glimpse of Romney’s back to see whether there was a box-shaped device jutting out from underneath his jacket? Or was there someone underneath his podium feeding him answers, maybe even controlling his every word and motion? Cuz you know, Romney is a muppet after all.

Last but not least, here’s a link to a wonderful diary: “Letter from MLK III to John Edwards: A Video Illustration.”

    Off Topic:
Could you expand the “recent comments” list on the right side of the page? 10 comments is just not enough. Significant and cogent comments slide off the list in a very short time when your site puts up 4 and 5 topic posts in a short time.
Missing the dialogue with other intelligent posters is suprememly frustrating.

You’ve got it. I immediately e-mailed Moses / I’m 98% sure he can do this easily.

And I appreciate your making requests like this. Feedback is the very best way we can improve the site.

      • CK

Thank you SUsan, I see it has gone to 15.
        Much appreciated.

        • susanunpc

Good! Moses did it. Let’s watch how it works for us. It requires the database to query the site contents, and can slow the site down.

However, we moved to a fast new server this week. (We went through the typical headaches with that — I think I spent about 20+ hours on it this week — but everything seems to be working out fine now.)

LET US KNOW how the site is loading for you. FEEDBACK important.

          • CK

No issues with the site since the server changeover. Loads quickly, refreshes quickly.
My link is a verizon 30MB FIOS line

            • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Thank god for Moses. He knew about, and recommended, the new server company we went to. It costs a lot more, but it sure seems like it’s worth it!

Here is more about the new, different type of politics, not the rotten type of politics practiced by Hillary Clinton.

    What a crock.

“Chuck Norris doesn’t read books. He stares them down until he gets the information that he wants.”
We always knew Huckabee supporters had their own version of the truth.
    http://www.chucknorrisfacts.com/

“Contrary to popular belief, America is not a democracy, it is a Chucktatorship.”
Huckabee will probably replace the all knowing IRS with Chuck, because Norris knows everyone and how much they owe.

Fortunately, Norris can help us count the current accounts deficit:
“Chuck Norris counted to infinity – twice.”

As for the education controversy of teaching intelligent design, he has a solution to that as well:
“There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.”

However, the entire myth of Chuck Norris was undone when he admits to being afraid.
“67 year old Chuck Norris is afraid that 71 year old John McCain will drop dead during the first term of his presidency.”
    digg.com/politics/Chuck_Norris_afraid_John_McCain_will_drop_dead

Chuck Norris doesn’t get afraid, he just makes fun of old people who hold leadership positions.

Now that the myth is deflated, Nietzsche can go back to bed. The ubermensch is no more.

In a globalized world, there is no such thing as “domestic.” Just varying degrees of open.

    Boycott Chuck Norris

So what you’re saying is, if I accidently fall asleep with the TV on, then wake up later to a Chuck Norris infomercial for exercise equipment; that I should immediately get up and turn off the TV; right?

  • http://bluegirlredmissouri.blogspot.com/ –Blue Girl

Okay – I’m game for the boycott save one niggling detail…how will anyone know?

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

You guys are having far too much fun at poor Chuck Norris’s expense — ‘specially while his candidate is sinking like a stone :)

Since it is open thread and my opinion of whether Hillary would be a good president isn’t worth reading I ask you blinded-by-the-light Hillary supporters to read a more respected writer Dr Paul Craig Roberts and if you think he is full of shit then there is no hope for the Republic.

Perhaps the U-hauls will only have to cross to the other side of K street as well.

Moreover, Congress will still be controlled by the same interest groups

CSpan 2 has a discussion on torture. American Constitutional Society event.

Former 1975-76 Church Committee Counsel Frederick Schwartz is on, Human Rights First’s Elisa Massimino, Georetown’s Marty Lederman(former OLC) as host, David Rivkin the James Baker flak of Baker & Hostetler, Dan Marcus, Amer.Univ. Washington College of Law.

Audience questions in the final minutes.

Major CIA pushback against OVP, DoJ, Executive branch. Gang of four dissent noted as well.

Very critical of the fact almost no transparency or Constitutional checks exist.
Schwartz- “The Congressional investigation is much more important than a Criminal investigation.”
Says more facts will get out there.

Reporter notes the tape destruction in 2005 to cover the fact they used waterboarding past the time there was a supposed deadline on its use in 2002. They admit its use up to 2002 and supposedly corrected its use, then when caught doing otherwise simply destroyed evidence.

Mukasey with egg on face over it.

During the program Rivkin notes the security card as the continued justification, then even notes it was such a new challenge. The Chevron expression, the tendency to exchange a list of designation from easy to worst, one to ten, etc. Complete legalese.

He admits the opinion eventually rested upon was the paper of a first year student made into policy.

Where’s the rule of law? Our country was fighting a revolution and George Washington, in new territory, refused torture of Hessian soldiers and impressments captured by our Army. One would assume this included their families, Hessians were known to have wives travel and see their needs in cooking and other items, and even had a comfort army of girlfriends for others. That item’s an assumption on the historical record of their social structure, not an authenticated American historical item. One would imagine such was similar here, and a key part of how Gen.Washington was able to assimilate those troops so effectively or carry forward legitmate prisoner exchanges and garner additional international support from allies such as France.

The very founding of America enshrined the rights of those we fought in war. This helped us gain advantage. The notion of State sponsorship or uniformed service being separate from these rights designations would seem to be a moot point since third party soldiers comprised a majority of the opponents we faced.

They were recognized prisoners of war also.

Marcus(9/11 counsel as well) continues and mentions the fact Contempt of Congress could be another item to weight in the Hearings process, as a final note.

American Constitution Society for Law & Policy Panel on CIA Tape Destruction
David Rivkin of Baker, Hostetler, and Elisa Massimino of Human Rights First are two of the panelists discussing the CIA’s destruction of interrogration tapes. They consider whether a crime has been committed and the merits of a special counsel. The event is hosted by the American Constitution Society for Law & Policy.
    1/25/2008: WASHINGTON, DC: 1 hr. 40 min.

This key program preceded the above:
Counsel for POWs and Family Members in Acree v. Iraq
U.S. POWs from the 1991 Gulf War hold a news conference to disuss President Bush’s veto of the Defense Authorization Act and its impact on their court judgement against Iraq for torturing during the war.

Counsel for POWs and Family Members in Acree v. Iraq

    1/25/2008: WASHINGTON, DC: 1 hr. 45 min.

The key aspect of that was that the Counsel for POW from Desert Storm who sued the Iraq government were denied standing by an Executive Decree.

That’s right, George W. Bush opposed a Defense Authorization Act with the Laughtenberg Amendment in it that would have given these soldier that right to sue those who tortured American POW.

One could understand why Bush’s boss CHeney did this, because he authorized torture and the Halliburton profiteer would then be liable for that fact.

We cannot establish precedent, even when our own troops would be the ones getting the Rule of Law in their favor.

Orwell is rolling over in his grave…

the Republicans are so convoluted in their arguments, the Counsel for the POWs broadsided the Executive repeatedly.

Orwell is rolling over in his grave…

Did you happen do see the floor speeches Dodd and Whitehouse gave today on FISA?

  • CK

Orwell has rolled over in that grave so often and so quickly that the American Dental Association is thinking of exhuming him and using him for ultra high speed tooth drilling.

  • Ron Cowin

Is there anything of Chuck Norris’ career left to boycott? I haven’t seen Walker in several years, even in syndication. I don’t watch infomercials. I sort of remember Bruce Lee kicking his butt in Enter the Dragon, but should that be boycotted? Wouldn’t that be a good thing? I think he endorsed Huckabee because his career didn’t have a prayer. Which is a realistic appraisal of his candidate’s chances.
