Cher: Another example of airhead Hollywood bigotry

With her latest pronouncements Cher has added her name to the list of botoxed bigots who populate the self-congratulatory circle of mutual masturbators in Tinseltown.
In asking how anyone could possibly be a Republican, she insulted half of America and displayed that kind of smug, self-satisfied, holier-than-thou attitude typical of the not-so-liberal celebrity left.
Being from foreign shores, with no affiliation to either party, I hold no particular prejudice towards Democrats or Republicans. I have met some very civilized, tolerant, socially liberal and pleasant people from both parties.
At the same time I have met idiots and jerks from both parties too. Both have their share of narrow-minded bigots.
But I have yet to hear a Republican publicly proclaim that he or she never met a civilized Democrat, in the way that Cher implied that there are no civilized or intelligent Republicans.
The tragedy is that these airheads are so wrapped up in their sense of rightness and moral superiority, and so sure that everyone else in Hollywood shares their outlook, that they cannot even begin to believe that any right-minded person might consider such views to be extremely bigoted and narrow-minded, or that their fan-fed vanity might exceed their intelligence.
It was very evident at the recent Golden Globe awards, where Laura Dern announced how great it was to have a president who offered “change we can believe in”. You could see that she fully expected her pronouncement to be warmly welcomed by the gathered airheads, and she was not disappointed. With the exception of a few taut-lipped celebrities, the airheads gave her just what she expected.
It was not so much the smugness with which she delivered such comments that I found most sickening; it was the whole smug milieu in which she delivered them.
I wish Tom Wolfe was still writing the kind of satire he did so brilliantly in such essays as “The Electric Kool-Aid Aid Test” and his piece on “Radical Chic” about Leonard Bernstein’s party for the Black Panthers. I am sure he could do a wonderful piece on today’s “radical chic” among Hollywood’s botoxed bigots.
I know some socially liberal and broadly tolerant people who happen to vote Republican because they believe in fiscal restraint on the part of the national government.
The country would almost certainly not be in the economic mess it is now if their views on responsible fiscal management had prevailed.
