“Nobody knows” is the secrecy of the last 8 years and now we can look forward to 4 more years of “nobody knows” but in a very different way. The truth is there very serious people that DO know. BO and his “big tent” sideshow are not among them.

February 12, 2009 (LPAC)–The FBI is targeting 38 major firms for fraud “directly related to the current economic crisis,” according to a top FBI official, and ultimately the number could rise into the hundreds. “These are companies, businesses that everybody knows about,” said John Pistole, the FBI’s Deputy Director.

He described the investigations as “large, complex,” and similar to the Enron investigation. On other occasions, federal officials have fingered Lehman Brothers, American International Group, Countrywide Financial, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as under criminal investigation.

Several criminal cases are underway against firms involved in the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), testified the Special Inspector General for the TARP program, Neil Barofsky, who added that he is working closely with other agencies, the New York State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, who chaired yesterday’s hearing on corporate fraud, told the witnesses that “I want to see people prosecuted,” adding, “I want to see people who have committed such fraud and the havoc it’s caused to this country — frankly, I want to see them go to jail.”

Less than half (45 percent) of Americans think “Barack Obama’s proposed $825 billion dollar economic recovery plan” will help the economy. Twenty-nine percent think the plan will not make a difference, while 18 percent think it will hurt the economy. Democrats (63 percent) are much more likely than independents (43 percent) or Republicans (22 percent) to think the recovery plan will help.

And Rasmussen polls are also worse for Obama’s plan.

There is also a lot of confusion on polling, and answers depend on whether the poll is asking about stimulus in general or Obama’s plan in particular. Given that a LOT of people think Obama’s plan includes some checks in the mail for them, the numbers have to be a little misleading. Now that we are finding out that the tax rebate is actually a reduction in withholding of $10-$20 per month over two years, the polls will certainly be less favorable next week. And we’re still hearing new details and having earmarks added at the last second, so check back later.

I’m trying to read a few threads here but I have yet to see a single coherent criticism of the overall aim of the bill: to pump an enormous amount of cash as quickly as possible into a system that is reeling from lack of liquidity. There are certainly a few hardcore libertarian economists who don’t buy this theory, but I don’t hear that critique here at NQ. I just here “I don’t like Obama, so his bill must suck.” While also approvingly referencing Krugman, et al, who think precisely the opposite: that the bill doesn’t go far enough.

Why don’t we put it the other way…take every single big piece of spending, all the way to golf carts, furniture for offices, etc. and tell me exactly how that money gets into the taxpayer’s pockets and how it creates jobs. I have never seen you do that myself. And I don’t mean talk in your generalities and use the troll talking points you are paid to spew. I mean take every single big piece of money that is spent and tell us exactly how the money gets into our pockets and creates jobs. Good luck. It’s a piece of crap. Period.

What kind of complete BRAIN-DONOR do you have to be to think this is going to have a real effect on the recession. It could be OVER in 24 months.

I am sick of Obama myrmydons acting like this is a solution. It’s just massive deficit spending on our bureaucracy. How can you claim to be intelligent, call Bush wrong for tax-rebates and massive deficit spending, blame the recession on him, and then tell me that the solution to the recession is to DOUBLE Bush’s deficit spending? AND NOT just any spending. We’re going to give out tax-rebates and build bigger government.
