Is Barack Obama An Articulate George Bush? [UPDATED]

While I strenuously opposed Barack Obama as candidate for President I made clear that I would support him for doing good and decent things. My attempt at being even handed cost me some friends. Patsy and Sugar, for example, walked away because I would not engage in Obama bashing. But the Golden Child’s performance to date is fueling concern that he is in deep water and barely knows how to tread water.

I still hope he succeeds–succeeds in the sense of changing how Washington works, holds office holders to a higher standard and pursues genuine bipartisan policies–but he apparently is intent on colossal failure. Consider the following:

He promises to hold his appointees to a higher standard but then bends the rules for several, most prominently Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, who is a tax cheat. We could perhaps excuse this hypocrisy if Geithner had proven to be a genuine wunderkind of finance, but he appears in public with a deer-in-the-headlights gaze and has bombed in persuading the markets and the financial industry that he knows what the hell he is doing. His continued failure to offer details on his plans has been accompanied by a 6% decline in the stock market. Heck of a job Timmy.

Barack Obama has no sense about the power of his words. The other day while boosting the stimulus plan during a stop in Elkhart, Indiana Obama inserted foot into mouth:

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said Tuesday that he wants an apology from President Obama for saying companies shouldn’t visit Sin City on the taxpayer’s dime. The mayor was reacting after hearing remarks Obama made Monday during a town hall meeting in Elkhart, Ind., where the president traveled to muster public support for economic stimulus legislation.

“You can’t get corporate jets, you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime,” Obama said. Goodman said Obama’s comments were unwarranted.
“That’s outrageous, and he owes us an apology,” Goodman said in an interview with KLAS-TV after attending a regularly scheduled meeting with Las Vegas tourism officials. “He owes us a retraction.”

Someone forgot to tell boy wonder that there are service workers in Las Vegas who voted for him and who depend on out of town visitors in order to help pay their salaries. There is potential good news, however. Enough democrats may lose their jobs in Vegas that Harry Reid might have a tough time getting re-elected. One can hope.

Then you have the Tony Zinni flap. General Zinni says he was asked to become the U.S. Ambassador to Iraq by NSC Director Jim Jones but then, without explanation or forewarning, the invitation was withdrawn. I am told that David Axlerod cut the floor out from under Zinni following a last minute intervention by some lower level Obama staffers. Professionals do not act this way. This is amateur hour.

You might want to cut Obama some slack and argue this was just one isolated event but it is not. We have the debacles of Bill Richardson and Tom Daschle having to renounce nominations because of inadequate vetting.

And today we saw Senator Judd Gregg pull out as the proposed Secretary of Commerce. Just after he was announced to be the nominee someone on the Obama team let slip that the U.S. Census, which is the major responsibility of the Secretary of Commerce, would be shifted to the White House.

In the same way that George Bush squandered an historic opportunity in the wake of 9-11 to forge a global strategy to combat terrorism by turning instead to partisan politics in a bid to shore up the Republican party, Barack Obama is making an epic mistake by telling Republicans to fuck off on the economy and throwing in with the petty partisan politics of Pelosi and Reid.

Despite calls for transparency he is hiding information about the waivers he is giving to former lobbyists. He denounced earmarks but is backing a stimulus bill filled with earmarks and hides behind the lame ass excuse that the earmarks are not what he defines as earmarks. He claims he wants to remove partisanship and then he engages in the same kind of fear mongering Bush used to fan the “war on terror,” only he warns of economic collapse if “something” is not done.

I am not arguing that the Republicans necessarily have a better vision. Frankly, I am fed up with the whole pathetic lot. Instead of a realistic, cooperative effort to tackle the economic crisis both sides are engaging in the same kind of partisan nonsense that has haunted us for the last eight years.

Given what I know about the current stimulus bill it is certain it will not work and the luster on Mr. Hope and Change will be tarnished by this time next year. Once you dramatically increase the U.S. debt and do not achieve any significant job growth or GDP revival the long knives will be out and members of Congress, who will stand for election in 2010, will start a stampede for the lifeboats.

Barack should have led the way in drafting the economic stimulus package. Instead he punted to Pelosi. He could have convened a genuine bipartisan group of House and Senate members–perhaps he could have asked John McCain to help. Instead, he acted like a petulant George Bush. He blamed Republicans for the economic mess, just like Bush blamed Democrats for putting America at risk from terrorists, and, like Bush, ignored the responsibility that Democrats who controlled Congress for the last two years may have shared for the problems. He could have risen above politics, but no. Why fulfill your promise?

Barack is to economics what Bush was to terrorism. Bush hurt America on the security front and it sure appears that Obama is following in his footsteps on the economic front.

UPDATE:
Here is Barack Obama demonstrating he is out of touch with Caterpillar’s executive.

  • Doc99

Larry, this is the Peter Principle. The American people promoted Barack Obama above his level of competence. He is in way over his head in dangerous waters. God help us all.

  • ScottVA

It just boils down to the fact that Mr. nObama doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground! He needs to learn to walk and chew gum at the same time AND FAST!!!

  • tek

Larry: good article. I too am convinced that Obama’s administration will be all about building a patronage system and redistricting. We’ll end up with the Democratic K Street. I was so worried this would be the result of his election. It seemed obvious the New Dems behind him had a self-serving agenda or they wouldn’t have interfered so seriously with the primary process.

  • catherine

OMG Larry, this is EXACTLY what I’ve been trying to tell friends and co workers alike for over a year!

Obama is a more attractive and more articulate George Bush. The marketing was much better. The repackaging superb but it’s the SAME DEFECTIVE PRODUCT!

It was a shi**y product then with an R after it’s name and it’s still a shi**y product now with a D after it’s name. No matter how much expensive perfume you spritz it with it still STINKS!

  • Peggy Sue

Sadly, I think you’re right, Larry. I did not have high expectations for this administration, but it’s starting off far worse than I thought. I was amazed and appalled at the Zinni faux pas. And this was the result of “following a last minute intervention by some lower level Obama staffers.”

Yikes! Who is running this ship?

And the Census thing? The Republicans better fight this like hell. Otherwise, they’ll be steamrolled. Along with the rest of us.

I agree with you: I’m not so sure the Republicans have a better vision. But the Dems are proving themselves blind as bats and totally tone deaf.

    What a frigging mess!

  • http://www.dwarfhamster.com dst

I suspect that both Sen. Gregg and Gen. Zinni have a deep understanding of Gen. Wes Clark’s reasons for cutting months ago.

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

    oh lordy, we are screwed.

  • JS

No disrespect, but I simply do not understand any American who loves this country, and loves what it stands for, hoping Obama “succeeds”. We all know what he is-a man who not only faithfully attended a disgusting black supremacist “church” for 20 years (not to mention exposed his children to the filth), but also befriended and took as his spiritual mentor, the monster that ran it. This would make any white man, given parallel circumstances, a racist. Obama? For some reason, not; a man who befriended a known unrepentant terrorist who is saddened for not killing more of his fellow Americans. This would make any other American an American-hater. Obama? Not; a man so evil to his core, that the one thing he unambiguously fought for was to deny babies-not fetus’, babies-the right to medical attention should they be born alive during an abortion attempt. This would make any man a ghoul. Obama? not. Etc…

Obama also made it very clear that he does not like our constitution, and in fact, feels it to be in need of some “fundamental” change. He has made it very clear what he wants to do as POTUS, and what he wants does not jive with what our founding fathers believed.

Given that and more, why on earth would you even entertain the idea that he wants anything good for this country? And how could you support so vile a person in his efforts to succeed?

Again, no disrespect, but Obama wants things which are the exact opposite of what America stands for. I wish him monumental failure, and a speedy exit…

  • http://noquarter foxyladi14

and to think ..we could have had the real deal.a ginuine leader in H.R.C.
instead we have a complainer in chief..

  • Bazooka

Sorry Larry, but the American people do not agree with you. His popularity has held steady and the people believe that he is doing a good job in general and with the stimulus. His polling numbers are phenomenal for someone who has undergone unbelievable and unprecedented attacks from the Republicans and from people like you from day one. You can knit-pick all you want, like all the other media talking heads, but given the very tough environment, and of course some errors along the way, on balance he is doing a very good job. There are many many economists that would disagree with you on the way he has handled the economy up till now, give the magnitute of the problems and the fact that there are no easy solutions, especially solutions that everyone will agree on.

“Public support for an $800 billion economic stimulus package has increased to 59% in a USA Today/Gallup poll conducted Tuesday night, up from 52% in Gallup polling a week ago, as well as in late January.”
    http://www.gallup.com/poll/114577/Stimulus-Support-Edges-Higher.aspx

    Also:
“The American public gives President Barack Obama a strong 67% approval rating for the way in which he is handling the government’s efforts to pass an economic stimulus bill, while the Democrats and, in particular, the Republicans in Congress receive much lower approval ratings of 48% and 31%, respectively.”
    http://www.gallup.com/poll/114202/Obama-Upper-Hand-Stimulus-Fight.aspx

“Fifty-percent or more of Americans say they have more confidence now in Barack Obama’s ability to improve the economy, manage the federal government, and in his ethical standards than before he took office.”
    http://www.gallup.com/video/114175/Americans-Confidence-Obama-Unshaken.aspx

“Of seven actions Barack Obama has taken during the early days of his presidency, five are supported by large majorities of Americans.”
    http://www.gallup.com/poll/114091/Americans-Approve-Obama-Actions-Date.aspx

    From a different source:
“The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 44% of U.S. voters now support the plan while 40% are opposed. A week ago, just 37% favored the legislation, and 43% were opposed.”
    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/february_2009/obama_campaigning_builds_support_for_stimulus_program
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Approval Index for Thursday shows that 43% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. That’s a five-point improvement since the President’s prime time television press conference on Monday night.
“Seventy-three percent (73%) of Democrats Strongly Approve of the President’s performance along with 10% of Republicans and 37% of those not affiliated with either major political party. Since Monday, those numbers reflect a seven-point gain among Democrats, a one-point decline among Republicans, and an eight-point gain among unaffiliated voters.”

  • KmX

I think Obama is more like George Herbert Walker Bush.

Read my Lips: There is no pork in the stimulus!

  • I’m a Linda too

“You can’t get corporate jets, you can’t go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer’s dime,” Obama said.

BUT, apparently all House Democrats can go on a weekend Resort getaway at the taxpayers expense.

  • KmX

I support President Obama NOT his Policies!!!!

I support the workers NOT the Unions.

  • d2d

You know, Larry, I get why you are hoping O is successful as President. We certainly have no room for failure in leadership now. We’ve got to get it right. There is no room for error. We’re all screwed if he continues in the trajectory he is currently on. It’s time he seriously considers a change in course.

One way to do this, IMHO, is to take a large ass butcher knife to the “fat” in the stimulus package when it arrives on his desk. He needs to cut out all fluff and ONLY support the job stimulus portion of the Christmas tree. This is an opportunity to send one helluva message to his brethren in Congress AND to the people of the US that he is serious about changing Washington. This bill is his first test. If he fails, everyone will suffer the consequences including those who aren’t even born yet!

I can only hope he’ll lead. The House leadership obviously screwed the Senate Republican “do gooders” in conference and I can only hope that their constituents do the right thing by kicking their asses to the curb during their next election.

If O chooses to remain on this joke of a course then I hope you and all of the others who wanted to give him a chance will call him on it and be relentless in your journalistic pursuit to as you phrased it “bashing” him. I prefer the sentiment of “telling the truth” as you see it.

    Just my two cents.

  • getfitnow

Larry, great article. He can’t lead because he’s not a leader! He is a symbol only capable of doing the bidding of Pelosi/Reid. He doesn’t have the knowledge or vision that only comes with experience. I believe that Emmanuel is calling the WH shots and is working with Pelosi/Reid setting the agenda.

  • catherine

I know. That’s what hurts the most. A genuine diamond was stolen from us and the media and DNC expect us to believe this cubic zirconia is the real article.

  • Fae

    Sigh.

  • Ferd Berfle

Is Barack Obama An Articulate George Bush?

There’s a glaring disconcerting assumption there, namely associating articulate with That One. Pardon me for harkening back to my English and speech courses, but I was instructed, with good reason, that ers, ahs, and ums were part and parcel of an unprepared orator and were a no-no–such mannerisms detract from the content and are red flags to those listening who aren’t yet on board. I’ve listened to great orators, including MLK and Barky isn’t in the same universe. Moreover, repetetive phrases for the sake of repetition were frowned upon simply because a speech is not a chant and rote repetition represents an idea running out of steam.

Sorry, That One is no better than Shrub and may even be worse because he claims to be an orator but isn’t.

  • I’m a Linda too

    so true.

  • d2d

Zinni faus paus! Rubbish! That debacle was a helluva lot more than an error. That was sorry ass leadership, period.

  • Andy

You know after BO won, and HRC accepted SoS I relaxed a bit about foreign policy and the world affairs and thought, well, as long as he fixes the economy, even if he only follows up on half of what he says then we should be alright…
It is too early still to come to a final conclusion but so far the circus smells to high heaven….

  • celeste

He can’t take a butcher knife to it because he has no line-item veto. He has to veto the whole thing or sign the whole thing.

  • Andy

By the way, I know BO is POTUS, but really, who is the “puppet master” ? I really do not think this is his game plan. He is still performing (just as candidate BO) and not owning the position…

  • cathnealon

But don’t forget BO and his Chicago thugs are getting their one trillion and that’s all they care about–they’ve got an agenda and it doesn’t have anything to do with saving the American way of life, putting reputable people in charge(even when they put them in charge like HRC it’s only for show and tHEN they undercut them, Gregg found this out, hopefull HRC will too and resign). This guy doesn’t believe in anything or anyone but himself–he’s totally without a moral center. He wants to hang the capitalists and move in the welfare state.

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

We can add this to the list…

Caterpillar CEO Contradicts President on Whether Stimulus Will Allow Him to Re-Hire Laid Off Workers

President Obama today repeated the claim we asked about yesterday at the press briefing that Jim Owens, the CEO of Caterpillar, Inc., “said that if Congress passes our plan, this company will be able to rehire some of the folks who were just laid off.”

Caterpillar announced 22,000 layoffs last month.

But after the president left the event, Owens said the exact opposite.

Asked if the stimulus package would be able to stop the 22,000 layoffs or not, Owens said, “I think realistically no. The truth is we’re going to have more layoffs before we start hiring again”

“It is going to take some time before that stimulus bill” means re-hiring, he said.

    From Tapper

  • HelenS

I totally agree that Obama is operaing on the Peter Principle, however I believe that according to the Peter Principle, “Every employee tends to rise to his level of Incompetence.” God only knows….that Obama has succeded at that.

  • Tricia Spiegel

A very good essay. Scary though.

  • http://www.dwarfhamster.com dst

Yes Larry, you could take a tape of any republican punitive in the days before the first Patriot Act vote and substitute the words Stimulus Package for Patriot Act and change the R- to a D- before the name and few watching would bat an eye.

  • cynic

Agree with the specifics of his response to the economic economic crisis or not. Can we deny that only 3 weeks after his arrival there’s a comprehensive response on the roll? This has been done while he’s still in the process of assembling his administration and dealing with the attendant problems. Meantime, he’s also hit the road to promote his program. Given the situation, I find his performance so far impressive and encouraging. I choose hopeful optimism as the more useful mindset. Ultimately I’ll judge him by the results.

  • I’m a Linda too

Well, I liked with Lindsay Graham and McCain were talking. And called his office to say so, after calling my Senators to talk with him.

But, NOPE. They couldN’T DO THAT.

I didn’t support the home buying tax credit, because they weren’t addressing helping the people currently having housing/mortgage problems. And that’s what has helped get us in to this mess. And that would have only added to the problem.

But Senator Graham was talking about using the money to bring down interest rates to 4percent. That enabled folks to be able to STAY in their homes. Then added the home buying tax credit. Tax cuts and only fund programs that created jobs and stop this big wish list, we can’t afford it and it won’t help.

    It sounded right to me.

  • d2d

Well then, Celeste, we’re all screwed!!!

I stand corrected – VETO the monstrosity!!!

  • Ferd Berfle

This guy doesn’t believe in anything or anyone but himself–he’s totally without a moral center. He wants to hang the capitalists and move in the welfare state.

Agree with the first and disagree with the second. He is owned by the capitalists because he’s only in it for the fame and enough money to keep ME-chelle in earrings and him with fawning supplicants. His handlers are going to allow him to screw what’s left of the Middle Class because we’re that pesky bunch who vote against corporate interests the bulk of the time. International conglomerates that will go to bed with Evangelical Republicans aren’t above going to bed with self-absorbed, entitled narcissists. They win, either way. And the American electorate continues to vote against their own self-interest.

  • AlexisM

I agree with you 100%. For Obama to succeed with his plans for our country means we lose. I hope he keeps failing miserably, exponentially, so we can get rid of him and his toxic cabinet before it’s too late for us.

  • Ferd Berfle

As have a lot of CEOs. There is no end to the absolute incompetence of those in positions of power. That One is an example of such incompetence.

  • Karen

Obama is a front man, a performer. Obviously others are running the show – and that’s what it is, a show. So sad, given the problems we face.

  • The Real HC

He isnt even particularly articulate. Where did he get that twangy voice he uses when hes trying to be folksy? And have you heard his “street” persona? He is beige, Bush was off blue. Is that the change we were looking for?

  • OG

I repeatedly tried to say that there was no way that he would do good for the country. Just look at how he left his own district – District 13. He and his “good buddy”, Felon Rezko did that. Imagine what he and the rest of his “good buddies” are going to do for the country.

It has always bugged me that no one called j=him on his ridiculous statement that he would cut pork out of any bill sent to him. I understand that not everyone knows these things, but a US Seantor should at least know that the president doesn’t have a line item veto. But of course he may have known that and just been lying.

  • cynic

He communicates exceptionally well, once listeners remove their fingers from their ears.

  • http://NoQuarterUSA.net Larry Johnson

    Bozo-oba,
I spoke out against George W. Bush back in May of 2003. Most Americans backed Bush then. I was right. They were wrong. I am right now. You will see.

  • Ferd Berfle

Actually he doesn’t. Talking at someone is not talking to them, sparky. His oratorical claptrap, the dead fish that he is, is best served on ice as it leaves one cold anyway.

  • AlexisM

This is why I don’t want B-Crack to succeed.

    Socialist Prophecy

Sixty four years ago, Norman Thomas knew what was going to happen to our country in 2009.
Norman Mattoon Thomas (1884-1968) was a leading American socialist, pacifist and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. As the Socialist Party candidate for president, Thomas said this in a 1944 speech:
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism,’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”
He went on to say: “I no longer need to run as a presidential candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democratic Party has adopted our platform.”

John Kennedy once said to a assembled group of scholars in the White House * I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House – with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

The quotes below could prove his point.

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe , we shall become as corrupt as Europe .
    Thomas Jefferson

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
    Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
    Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
    Thomas Jefferson

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much
    government.
    Thomas Jefferson

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
    Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is,as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
    Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
    Thomas Jefferson

    Very Interesting Quote:
In light of the present financial crisis, it’s interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

‘I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

  • Ferd Berfle

Amen, Larry. This administration appears onits face to be heading towards a Dubya Redux.

  • AngryWhitePerson

Agreed. In addition, I always thought “articulate” meant that the speaker could convey ideas with clarity and effectiveness. Obama conveys nothing. When he drones and drones with run-on sentences and pretty multi-syllables strung together, do you get the sense of WHAT he is talking about?

In the end, Obama offers up useless word salads.

Linda … they need a serious move to start the housing market moving again. A tax credit for a FIRST TIME BUYER is not going to do it. They need to motivate EVERYONE to sell/buy so long as they are going to actually LIVE in that house for more than say, a year. And. They have to disgorge if they were flipping. There are PLENTY of Americans who can’t sell because they can’t afford to. Give them a tax break, however, and the loss they have to suck up doesn’t look quite so bad. Hell. Why not give it to people who are putting some skin in the game instead of people like, say Henrietta who only wants to take, take, take?

  • Winston

“What is that word you keep using? I don’t think it means what you think it means.” Princess Bride

When he drones and drones with run-on sentences and pretty multi-syllables strung together, do you get the sense of WHAT he is talking about?

Indeed. And no, he doesn’t know what he is talking about, and further, that he has some wet-behind-the-ears frat boy writing his jib-flapping rubbish only makes me pay even closer attention to the garbage emanating from his two-mouthed face. Stringing stilted and misused words (diction errors) and self-serving euphemisms together do not constitute the transfer of ideas and emotions but the debasing of the language in the name of assimilation.

I don’t buy the crap flowing from his facial orifice and wouldn’t hold it in a gloved hand.

The disrespect shown to Wes Clark was unbelievable. Though he would have served if asked, I’m glad he wasn’t asked. Gen. Zinni will surely know where Wes stands now, if he didn’t before. Gregg should have known what he was getting into and said no.

  • beebop

Is it just me? Doesn’t it bother anyone else that the woman who said “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback” source here ( http://www.newsweek.com/id/123024 ) is out each and every day doing the Laura Bush two step? That woman who said that “if you can’t run your own house, you certainly can’t run the White House,” has her mother looking after her children so she can go out and stump for her husband. Say what you will about Hillary Clinton. She raised a wonderful daughter and was a model first lady. MEEEEchelle couldn’d carry Hillary’s water.

  • Ellen D

Inarticulate George Bush didn’t flub his swearings-in.

  • Bazooka

where do you get your 37%? the gallup poll that just came out says 59% support the stimulus and only 33% oppose.

  • Jude

George Bush had a much higher approval rating after the September 11th attacks. Crisis has a way of pulling this country behind our President. But he, too, squandered it with adolescent demagoguery.

You cite enough statistics to make me think that you “doth protest too much.” Obama has to know he can quickly lose the popularity he currently enjoys.

    Time will tell.

  • avwrobel

If only these doofuses were that organized. This is still our Democratic party don’t forget. Now we can really appreciate what Hillary meant when she said she would ‘be ready from Day One’. I hold no hope out for this gang of thugs. I sure hope an insurrection is building in the House.

No baby. He is a performer. He is a stage performer. What you see is what you want.

Only Hillary and Bill Clinton were held to these standards. It’s obvious now.

Ferd — How can a guy be called articulate who brings a Teleprompter to a Press Conference? When you consider that he already knew the questions and the questioners to call on — he couldn’t give articulate answers without a Teleprompter.

  • Ellen

This is so ridiculous – the examples you refer to are so minor and can easily be explained. Richardson and Dacshle had problems – obviously were not honest about them from the get-go. Geitner got a pass – he maybe shouldn’t have, but he did and will have to perform a bit better than he did yesterday in order for us to take his policies seriously.
He didn’t ‘sell’ very well at all.

Zinni is a joke – in fact, it was Hillary who finally met with him and offered him the job. It has been widely reported (although you won’t see much of it now, the reports were quickly taken off the news services) that she came under quick fire from NY’s Jewish leaders for considering Zinni, who is known to have made less than favorable remarks about Israels’ policies. Right after meeting with Hillary, his name was dropped from consideration – and neither Hillary or her underlings informed Zinni of this. The President does NOT contact the person directly in this type of situation.

Greg Judd put HIS name up for commerce secretary – he wanted to join the cabinet, until he saw he would take a back seat to the census and suddenly felt he couldn’t vote for the stimulus. This was hardly Obama’s fault – why didn’t Judd think of that before asking to be let into the Obama fold?

Obama has tried to reach out to the Republicans – they won’t bite, its a lost cause. So he is leaving it be for now.

this hardly merits such a long criticism of the President – its not a big deal but when you have no real issues to go negative, I guess that’s what you have to do, huh?

  • Mary

Well, and a “Constitutional scholar” should have known that every president since Truman has asked for a line-item veto, but the Supreme Court has long ago ruled that it’s unconstitutional.

    Sheesh

It bothers the hell out of me. That HRC and Bill were good parents is demonstrated by their wonderful daughter. I can’t remember a more well-rounded child of a President. I do hope one day that Chelsea will run for office.

It also bothers me that ME-chelle has no taste in clothing-the upholstery she wears went out of style in the 30s.

  • AOK

It’s not nonsense when it’s true. America loves the new president. The American Re-investment Act has not tanked as it will be voted into law by Monday. Everytime you PUMAs and neocons bet against the president, you come up snake-eyes. Keep it coming though. We Obama supporters look forward to many laughs at your expense over the next 8 years.

A true leader would NEVER have picked a number like $800,000 for the stimulus bill, and then left it up to Congress to complete it.

    He OUTSOURCED his own responsibility.

you know i can’t believe this…the left wingers have how many national news networks doing their dirty work..just listen to chrissy pissy matthews still to this day trying to give bo a bj on air…it’s disgusting. • Winston

    Larry,

I find it hard to disagree with you because you know more about this stuff than I ever will. My expertise is in the exact sciences and politics, with its sophistry and intellectual dishonesty, is abhorrent to my mind.

In some sense you are right but I think it is a mistake to say that Bush and Obama are mirror images save for the very large differential in linguistic competence.

Obama has so many pregnant pauses between his oratory ejaculations it is the equivalent of coitus interruptus leaving us all unsatisfied; whereas with Bush it was slam bam thank you mam.

But there is a huge difference in ideology and we are at a tipping point where the extreme left has all but sown up victory for the next millennium. There is much fear in the air and its not all about the economy. Just look at the electorate and the process. Journalism died in 2008 and the souls of honest people like the NQers are in pain over it. It is also the collapse of rugged individualism, and I would consider you to be a member of that class.

I don’t want to paint too grim a picture but at this juncture I see no equivalence between our last two presidents. Bush was a disaster but Obama has created an epic nightmare that has destroyed any pretense for civil debate. We will be flushing the debris out of the electorate and the idea that only the government can save us for the rest of our lives.

But I understand what you are saying and in the NQ context of a blog one cannot parse every word or take things too literally. You are one rockin dude.

  • no kidding

Larry — I know you’re right. These are very scary times.

Larry, I used to be a yellow-dog-Democrat, but I’ve been less partisan since Hillary was stabbed by the Democratic Party. If I knew a man was a quack, someone who’s barely out medical school, and decided to sell himself as a great surgeon, I would not want him to succeed because I know he cannot. A quack puts the patients are at risk, and I would want him to fail right away so that he can be unmasked.

  • oowawa

He was a new movie with a fantastic heartwarming plot and a terrific trailer, and 69,000,000 people queued up to pay their money and see it.

  • Ferd Berfle

His teleprompter is his own picture of Dorian Gray. Jungian psychoanalysts will have to deal with a new archetype.

  • cc

a true leader would not use scare tactics, especially instantly out of the gate…they would instead invoke confidence, and try to calm a jittery nation..

but that’s how bo got into office scaring people into thinking they were racist…having his thugs issue death threats and intimidate hillary supporters…having his thugs threaten riots if he didn’t win…bobo and his minions are very very pathetic.

  • Ferd Berfle

By the way, did I ever mention how far a theater queue with 69,000,000 people lined up would stretch?

ROFL. Your take on UKelele is superb.

  • lark

    I would support him

Then you would pay the price because supporting a pathological liar will also need to support his treachery.

    I still hope he succeeds

Same as above. Seldom pathological liars succeed because their stories intertwine people and end up throwing the relation in disarray and inflicting havoc on their reputation. During the elections, hundreds of people that supported Obama ended with their reputations in shambles.

  • Ellen

You are really horrible – are you with Michelle Obama every day to see what time she spends with her kids?? Hillary raised Chelsea??? That’s the biggest joke ever. The minute she moved to Arkansas and had a child her parents moved there for the purpose of looking after her daughter. And she was NOT referring to Hillary when she made the statement about running the white hour or your own house – that’s been debunked so give it up.
You can hate Michelle and her family, you obviously do – but don’t go on with these ridiculous lies and continual comparisons to how Hillary would do any better.
Chelsea Clinton seems to be a lovely young woman, however she had her day, believe me. I personally witnessed her in a nightclub in NY several years ago – disgustingly drunk and vomitting all over the bathroom. wow-Hillary did a great job didn’t she???
Leave the president’s family out of this – Michelle couldn’t carry Hillary’s water??? Right – at least she passed her state’s bar exam-unlike someone who had to go to Arkansas to score a pass.

  • oowawa

LOL–Where is the lad? (looking over my shoulder nervously)

    Larry,

You have made some great analogies in your article and my suggestion that you were making equivalence arguments based on perfect symmetry is a bit over-simplistic. In other words, my reading comprehension improved during the second read, but not before I submitted my first rebuttal.

  • MBC

O/T, but not so much. I learned something today from a co-worker who is taking a new position with a start-up company, by the name of Google Health. Apparently, this new company will be selling their patient information database to various health maintenance organizations across the country. Starting with Medicaid Managed Care plans. Sounds good, right? Participation from patients is voluntary to start. They can have all their medical records consolidated in one nice database and when visiting an emergency room or new doctor, all their records are in one place. Reduces the risk of duplicate care, improper diagnosis, dangerous drug interactions, etc. However the real plan is to the sell access to this database to third party payers. Here is what I see happening, this will be social engineering at its finest and all bought and paid for with this stimulus package. When you present for medical care in the future you will be required (in order to be eligible for insurance coverage) to answer a lengthy series of questions, these will include very detailed questions regarding your habits, including what you eat, when you sleep, how much you exercise, etc. If your health problems can be attributed in anyway to improper or inappropriate behaviors (as determined by the mysterious board mentioned in the stimulus package) you will be denied coverage for care. Just like some of us would currently be denied coverage should we be in a traffic accident and not be wearing a seat belt. Your doctor will also be presented with a treatment protocol, anything that deviates from this protocol will NOT be covered.

The point of all of this is this, the calculated economic crisis occured in order to make it “urgent” to sign the stimulus package. This crisis was created by the money players, including George Soros, Google, Wall Street, etc. This is no accident. Nancy Pelosi with BO as her puppet intends to save us from ourselves.

  • termo

If you listened to Obama’s press conference as I did over the radio without any video you would have a slightly different take on Obama.

In comparison to Bush, Obama did not mangle the English language, but at least Bush answered questions and in less than 10 or 15 minutes. Bush actually understood answers while Obama appeared not to have a handle on information and was wasting time in the hope that he could avoid an answer or one would come to him.

As far as the economy, with Bush you knew Paulsen spoke for the administration. Who speaks for Obama because he has a cast of thousands giving mixed messages.

Obama missed his true calling which would have been to be a commercial voice over because he doesn’t have any original thoughts of his own.

  • lark

I bet I can buy a house as a first time buyer and pay my down payment with my tax credit. I bet you 2 million dollars – not – that ads for new homes will soon come out saying that you can use your tax credits for a down payment for a new car or/and a new house. :) There you go. A new cycle of shenanigans and crappy financing.

  • NCgirl

Obama is an “illusion.” He is like a gift box with nothing inside. The people that voted for him thought they were getting something, but they are not.

  • I’m a Linda too

    Agree.

  • lark

Hey, I bet the realtors will soon accept the tax credit as fees. And tax credits to pay for new furniture and a new car for the new house and credit companies will extend credit to new home buyers giving them excellent credit based on their tax credits. And tax credits for new homes will simply do wonders for a new cycle of shenanigans.

  • oowawa

If I knew a man was a quack, someone who’s barely out medical school, and decided to sell himself as a great surgeon, I would not want him to succeed because I know he cannot.

Well, r2d2, if that surgeon were ELECTED by some insane asylum to perform a delicate operation ON ME or on MY LOVED ONES, I would very much want him to succeed. But I would also be looking for an escape route out of that booby hatch.

The analogy doesn’t suggest any good options, does it?

  • Rah-Rah

Given Obama’s continued campaigning, this time to sell the stimulus bill to the American people, I think he is already bored with the job. And I mean that. He wants the prestige and fawning without the well-reasoned decision making (that takes effort, you know). And because of this leadership flaw he is making one-after-the-next-bad decision; note to Obama and your golden boy Axelrod: running a successful campaign is not the same as leading the country!

Hillary would have been brilliant during these times; when she didn’t win the nomination, we all lost.

    Ellen,

Have you ever learned what the term “rationalizing” means? I think it may apply to you. Perhaps you should also check out the meaning of term “denial.”

Their meanings will all come clear to you as you have to keep putting them into play in order to maintain your hope for change.

  • Bazooka

Wow, the world is falling under all these issues you have with Obama! Come on get real.

Geitner. Judging what he is doing based on a television appearance. Are you kidding me! So the stock market wanted some specifics and Geitner did not give it to them. So what? Geitner is quite right that the Treasury wants to take its time in a very complicated situation to get it right, so guys like you are not all over him. The market could very well be up 6% tomorrow. $30,000.. who cares? Could have been an honest mistake. Larry lets check all your overseas income.

All you got to complain about is Obama’s comment, which was exactly right, about companies that are using tax payers money going to Las Vegas. Obama was actually commenting on a employee junket by Wells Fargo. He was not complaining about Las Vegas specifically, but more the companies that abuse taxpayers. See the link:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28999671/

Sorry to General Zinni, but life is tough in the political jungle. You can probably blame your friend Hillary for that one.

Richards and Daschle. Give Obama credit as his much tougher screening process is actually working. Not easy finding qualified people that are still stuck in the old ways of Washington. Love to see if Bush did the same kind of screening to see how many of his appointments would have ended up. At least Obama is trying to move in the right direction on lobbying. So he gave a few waivers out of hundreds, big deal. I do not expect Abramoff contacting the Obama WH over 485 times or Obama have the lobbyist write the energy bill. End of the day Richards and Daschle are not in he cabinet. That is all that counts.

It was a mistake that Judd Gregg was appointed. You try and reach out in a bipartisan way and all the Repubs got is the same old politics. You have to think the Repugs went pretty hard at Gregg. They were probably very scared they were going to lose the seat in 2010.

The stimulus is a spending bill. That is what stimulus is. So the Democrats put a few things in there that they believe in. So what? The vast majority of the spending part of the bill is full of real infrastructure spending. Many economists believe this is the right thing to do and it can create up to 4 million jobs before the end of 2010. The idea is to stop the rate of decline or even to kick-start the economy. It may work, it may not, but you have to try. The country can afford the stimlus bill, it is only 3% of GDP. Larry you mentioned in a previous post an 80% number for total debt to GDP. That is probably about right, but that is not necessarily the best number to look at. Total federal debt, which excludes entitlements, is the better number. It is at about 40% and has been falling since it peaked during Clinton at 50%. With the stimulus and the TARP II we will just get back to where we were before. But, if the economy gets back going earlier with the stimulus, then the tax dollars will start flowing again and GDP will grow and the debt per GDP will start falling again. Debt per GDP will also not be totally out of line with alot of other OECD countries who are also all adding to their debt with stimulus packages.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_debt

And your final point really does not make any sense, given how bills are passed. The House always writes the bill first, then passes it off to the Senate. The Senate then usually re-writes the bill, taking out all the crap or adding some more. At that point McCain could have been involved, but he chose not to. He could have been in Spector’s office with the other three Republicans redrafting the stimulus and negotiating it. Instead, he just plays politics as usual. Anyways I would not expect much from McCain on economics, a guy who famously said the economy was doing okay just a few months ago.

See, I just don’t get how Dems continue to trash the Clintons with Republican talking points, yet want us Clinton supporters to lavish praise on their messiah. It’s what originally turned me off to Obama, and it continues today.

BTW, that NEVER happened with Chelsea in a NY club, and you are beyond tacky for even reporting it here. AND, Michelle did say the “take care of your own house” line. So, what I see here is just another lying Obot who can’t take any criticism of her leader.

If you read what I have written I go point for point with Larry. I am not sure how that is “scrapbooking” as you claim. What is wrong with pointing to a few facts to support my argument. You should try it sometime. Oh I forgot you are just on here to personally attack anyone with a different point of view. At least I stick to addressing the post. And what do you think half of these post are that NQ puts up? They almost all reference some article from a third party. They are “scrapbooking” as you say!

  • Ferd Berfle

When you come here to spread crap and heat but no light and link to obviously slanted rubbish posing as analysis, then you are a bot. Is there any part of that which is giving you trouble, kid?

There is no debating with someone like you, someone who only regurgitates talking points given you by some website or in some powerpoint presentation given at an android camp. You then have the unmitigated gall to criticize me. I don’t use the words of others to make my point like you do nor do I repeat the same crock of manure over and over (and over) again, like you do. You cut and paste, all the while pretending your comments are more than just prepackaged, prefabricated pablum for consumption by the unwashed herd you call your fellow travelers.

Well I’m here to tell you, bucko, that you can make up all the crap you like and then try to sell it to the lowest common denominator but you won’t sell anyone here on it.

Easy to throw potshots, but harder to actually argue a point.

My point is that you have nothing of substance to offer because you are incapable of independent thought.

Smoke that in lieu of the jimson weed.

  • Ferd Berfle

Yeah, and I see a guy who is great at campaigning hitting the campaign trail again, this time out of fear. He needs to lead and govern, not run rah rah rallies that ultimately feed his ego.

As for his decisions, I am not impressed. He decided to keep the faith based Bush policy, has stalled on ending the Iraq war, is backtracking on Gitmo and DADT, has brought on the lobbyists he claimed he would not hire, and chose folks with tax problems to be part of his administration. As I recall, he went on and on during the primaries asking for Hillary to reveal all of her tax info; too bad he wasn’t as concerned with his administration picks.

No, I am NOT impressed. And it’s only week 3.

All of the successful talk radio shows are supported by advertising. So, it is out of place for government to try to dictate what kind of programming there is. What next… dictate how companies advertise? The left has just as much right to promote their hate America agenda… and they do that with celebrity rants for example. If they can fund a hate America network… good for them. I won’t listen, but would defend their right to do so. If we lose that in this country, we really have lost everything. I guess I am more a libertarian at heart than ex-republican. ;)

People shouldn’t be denied care, that is for their insurance to decide. But there are alot people in this country who don’t exercise, eat junk food for 3 meals, smoke, drink too much and are just plain lazy and overweight. When I am out shopping, 75% or more of people are overweight. I am not talking about 10 or 20 pounds either.

These are things that people can easily do something about. There are enough diseases that can’t be prevented without adding ones that can be. This drives up insurance costs when people can’t even be bothered to take care of themselves and then have health problems because of it.

Why should I waste my breath arguing with a goose-stepping android like you who was programmed during the primaries to post your dreck. Your cognitive ability was lost months ago.

I’m sure you Obama supporters are looking forward to many laughs, wasteful programs, political payoffs, world insecurity, and fascism at our (and our children’s) expense over the next ? years. In fact, so far, everything Obama has proposed is “at our expense”.

Pesonally, I look forward to the time when previous Obama supporters will rather deny they ever supported him, than be counted among those that history books will probably describe as “the 69,000,000 dumbest drooling creatures to ever drag their knuckles on this planet.”

This is from the Vogue interview that goes with the cover story..

Mrs. Obama reflects back on that night among nights: “I was proud as a wife, amazed as a citizen,” she recalls. “I felt a sense of relief, a sense of calm, that the country I lived in was the country I thought I lived in.”

What, if Barack hadn’t won, America wouldn’t be the country she thought she lived in? It’s like she thinks America has something to prove to her. In spite of the education and opportunity she was able to find here, she still sounds like she thinks the country owes her something. When her husband decided to run for the Presidency, she had a job that paid $290,000 a year, that is 7.25 as much as the “average” $40,000 American salary. Wasn’t she proud of her country then? Wasn’t it the country she thought she lived in? I am so tired of hearing Michelle Obama run her mouth. Perhaps she can take a page from Laura Bush’s playbook and just shut the hell up.

  • morris1030

Sorry. Where I come from the President is responsible for his decisions.

Richardson was known to have many tax and legal issus and assured Obama people he was clear, etc. Any middle of the road headhunter could find out in a few hours that Richardson posed many ethical issues no new President can risk. But Obama did pay back and the crony thing which didn’t work out.

As for Daschle that is an old story and Obama had full knowledge of Daschle’s employment/consulting for the [CEO] at United Healthcare, and other insurance biggies that raked in millions for him and a lavish life style.

The only thing that perhaps Obama didn’t know was that the limos and perks were never declared by Daschle. Remember Daschle was the Majority House Leader who caved to the GOP every chance he got and was an ineffective leader. CEO of United Healthcare is currently being questioned and scrutinied for his humongous bonuses, and fooling around with the date of same by transfering said bonus into stock shares.

So friend Daschle? A sworn Hillary foe who promised with his old buddies Kerry,Kennedy, et al to block Hillary at all costs, and Obama can do it.

So the anti Hillary was a tool that Obama was beholden to for his success. He had to reward Daschle by giving him Healthcare. Imagine that Daschle now will be utilized as an “advisor”.

    Woe is healthcare.
Woe is an inexperienced politician who has no business being President.
Gregg was an ego trip as Obama morphed into Reagan.
Unrealistic and a very sensitive job needed to be held by the faithful. Mr. Charm has a lot to learn. Axelrod and Valerie are not Washington people and they will get snookered by other insider Obamots.I fear they already have lost a few but the best is before them. Didn’t they remember Hillary telling us that the GOP was tough and tougher?

Why then would Obama pick a guy known for playing footsie with his insurance pals [CEO of United Healthcare]?

Daschle was owed and he was cashing in, especially since he had the formulas in advance. And rewards$.

We are in deep doo doo. Treasury sec’y is a disgrace. There are so many advisors bumping into O as he emerges from one of his speaking tours, we can see how sloppy this thing is.

Can you figure the stupidity and chutzpah Pelosi showed in permitting the GOP or anyone else any slack? The stupid unnecessary pork should NEVER have been in. I am not reassured by Schumer telling us, “People don’t mind a little pork”.

The lack of sensitive and politically savvy plus groundwork in crafting the initial bill shows. We are looking at a dour Wall St huckster babble and tell us things will be worse. No details or plan for implementation. He’s improvising or hiding. Maybe both.

So….where were we? Oh…Obama is going off to Scranton to let them know he cares.

    This is amateur hour.

I am not arguing that the Republicans necessarily have a better vision. Frankly, I am fed up with the whole pathetic lot. Larry,
I deeply appreciate your letting different voices rant on No Q.
The reason some people, esp. women, may have taken offense at your “want to be evenhanded and fair to Obama” post, is that men keep moving the “fairness” line. Alot of women are totally exasperated at the idea that we’ll have to wait 4 more years, and probably 8, and hell, probably forever, to finally see a woman president. We’re so tired of being fair. It has gotten us NO where in this patriarchy.
But, again, thank you for the opportunity to vent!

The “let’s give him a chance” mentality is obviously overrated.

  • AlexisM

Revolution is the only way out of this.

  • lorac

I believe that “fair is fair”. If we’re going to tax some unhealthy things, we should tax them all. I personally believe we should have a tax on meat, as 60% of cancer and heart attacks are due to its consumption. Smoking contributes to around 30-something % of these illnesses. Yet smoking is taxed, but meat isn’t. You don’t get cholesterol from plant foods, and animal product consumption is very strongly related to many cancers, such as breast and prostate.

    Just MHO.

  • Cindy

If the women would picket, march, and throw fits just HALF as much as Harvey Milk and his followers did, change would happen!

  • kgirl1028

You know as a woman, I could give a flying flip if we had a woman president, just as as a black person I don’t give a rats ass about having a black president. What i wanted was after eight years of gross incompetence, to put someone in office, that was competent. That knew what the hell tthey were doing, because i know that for me to do well, my country has to do well. So i find it a bit insulting that people would try to reduce, female dislike of obama, off to wanting to see a woman in the white house. No i don’t want obama in the white house because i have watched him, i have reviewed his history, and what i see is an self centered, arrogent little joker, who cares about aboslutely no one but himself. He is a coward, underhanded and smug, to the point that he will refuse to good advice if it goes against what he wants. And he will let family members sit in poverty and do nothing, he tells bold face lies, that he doesn’t even try to cover up because he thinks we are stupid. And as a woman i don’t have sit around for years to figure this out. Nor do i feel the need to support someone who i view as dangerous and don’t like. DOn’t get me wrong, i understand the need of most honorable men to play fair. But my advice is that you need to wear a cup cause obama will kick you in the groin and laugh at you while you writhe in pain. Call it women’s intuition.

  • Cindy

at least Bush was not much of a sexist; in fact, it was obvious that he was not threatened by strong women (Karen Hughes, Condi Rice, etc.).
Obama, on the other hand, is our first openly-sexist President. It’s sickening.

  • TeakwoodKite

Barack Obama has no sense about the power of his words

Mr. Johnson, I can appreciate your position. Way back when the primaries were in your neck of the woods, I came to the conclusion that BO is tone deaf, in every way but one.

He comes to the office of POTUS compromised by his indifference. This is reflected in the way Gen. Zinni was dealt with and the amazing statement by Sen Gregg during his presser, “I could not be myself”.

It has me pondering what kinda poliphile one has to be to “make” the team. After all, the application for the job can be a mile long but doesn’t guarantee the words on it are worth the ink they are written with.

What has me very concerned is that when you say Bush used WOT fear and BO is using econ-fear, does this not severely damage “homeland security”? In the town up the road they are laying off 45 police officers. This same pattern is being repeated across the country and the first responder is a threatened spieces. They are releasing upwards of 40% of the prison population in Ca at the same time due to the budget.

I hear that SEIU corporate is seeking to take over the Ca state SEIU just like what occured during the primaries in Nevada.

So much for Shock and Awe.

I saw the comment she made about running the White House. She was talking about Hillary, plain and simple. This is one comment the Obama campaign can not explain away.

  • Scout

That quote is very similar to the ideas she espoused in her graduate thesis. Her sense of alienation from America-despite her upbringing, her education, and her job opportunities–is very deep, probably integral to her personality.

She seems like a person, who, no matter how much she has, no matter how much she has benefited from what this country has to offer, will never be truly satisfied or grateful.
