Bill O’Reilly’s sexist attack on Helen Thomas – The Easy Teenage Dance Mix

From time to time, you just have to have fun with the words of some of our most public blowbags. And while they may have a valid point here and there, or even contribute to the greater conversation by being obtuse curmudgeons, TV pundits like Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann or that guy named Dobbs — all of them — need to have their collective ego bubbles popped!

This past week, Bill O’Reilly took a shot at long-time White House correspondent Helen Thomas. As you all know, Ms. Thomas has been in the gaggle since Jack Kennedy. She’s been treated with respect most of that time. Yes, in the later years of George Bush, she was overlooked from time to time, but even then she was part of a great skit played at the National Correspondence Dinner which showed her stalking the president to get her answers.

But did O’Reilly address her question or her view? No, he said she reminded him of the “Wicked Which of the East”…who by the way,…we never see in the Wizard of Oz outside her feet under Dorothy’s house. Margaret Hamilton played the Wicked Witch of the West.

When he came under fire for this comment by women’s groups and Media Matters he tried to deflect it as, “I said she sounded like, as in her voice…not her appearance” (paraphased). Truth is, Helen Thomas didn’t sound anything like Margaret Hamilton, this was just typical Bill O’Reilly running from his record.

Additionally he ignores that he calls her that “old woman”, then proceeds to mock the idea that he’s an ageist or sexist.

So as usual he invites someone to help him defend himself only to attack the guest in the end. This time it was author Courtney Martin. After trying to run the whole interview, she maintained her ground and in the next segment, this time populated by two other men he says, “I’m right, aren’t I”?

But…enough of the reality of things…I had to get some cathartic release out about Bill O’Reilly’s penchant for bloviation and put it into artistic terms…Here’s the “Bill O’Reilly’s Attack on Helen Thomas – The Easy Teenage Dance Mix vol. 2″
Enjoy

  • Sassy

Since O’Reilly had to resort to phone sex at one time, I doubt that he knows much about women!
Ms. Thomas is probably more adept than her critics, even at her advanced age!
    After all, she is working!

  • Tricia Spiegel

Glad you did this story. Billo can be fun, but Helen didn’t deserve that nasty remark. If Bill wants us to see him as an adult, he will have to act more like one.

  • TexasMirth

Our “humble correspondent” has one of the biggest egos on television, along with a glass jaw. He can dish it out, but he doesn’t take criticism well at all.
Still, I confess, I watch Bill regularly. Does that make me a pinhead?

    • Strawberry

      Ummm, no just a masochist.

    • mary

I’ve watched Bill O’ during primary when he got hysterical and started physically abusing a guy who was ‘obstructing’ his view of Obama! He looked and sounded like a lst class BULLY! His hysterical, malevolent reaction and chilidish physical attempts to bully the person will stay in my mind. What a sorry excuse for male Foxy punditry! A jerk!

  • Strawberry

Great video, TT007. Bill O has no clue, does he? Before he starts insulting older women, he should check his demographics. Biting the hand that feeds and all that.

  • Betty

Bill O’Rilley is mean spirited and so are the people who enjoy watching him.
As preceding poster said we need to start looking at ourselves.

    • TexasMirth

Bill O’Rilley is mean spirited and so are the people who enjoy watching him.
As preceding poster said we need to start looking at ourselves.

Gee, Betty, glad to see you are not judgmental about millions of folks you’ve never met. Everyone who enjoys watching THE FACTOR is mean-spirited, eh? We should all be just like you, I suppose. Tolerance and diversity is so passe.

      • beebop

To say nothing of all of the people who watch the spittle master over at MSNBC …. what is his name again Keith something? Obamamann?

        • http://firefox AnnieCollier

Who screams every night. I don;t watch O’Reilly all that much but I certainly enjoyed his rant at Barney Frank. I believe he’s the only one who called him out…

        • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

And I’ll do equal treatment of him soon, I’m sure. You have to catch the right rant to do it with. I can’t outdo the Ben Affleck impersonation, so that stands as the best satire on KO right now.

      • wodiej

I agree. I don’t watch his show alot but I do on occasion. While the remark was unwarranted, he was right that the guest and many other women like her didn’t say squat when Sarah Palin was being bashed. No, because she isn’t liberal so that makes sexist and ignorant, rude remarks ok. They were mad because O’Reilly said something rude about a liberal not because she was a woman. Hypocrisy is what it was. That doesn’t excuse the remark but they need to either stand for all women or shut their piehole.

        • J S Ruby

          woodiej,

          I totally agree with you.

The woman that appeared on The Factor to beat up Bill could not justify her silence when the media, etal, were beating up on Palin. Call things equally or shut up.

          • FranSC

Exactly, J S Ruby! To his credit, O’Reilly sent Helen Thomas roses the next day.

I am more dismayed everyday with those women who call themselves *feminists* who don’t have a clue as to what that means. I surely understand the confusion of not only Bill O’Reilly but everyone in general since 2008 proved to be the worst year for women I have ever lived through. I further understand the confusion since all the would-be spokespeople come from many and varying facets of women’s rights.

Most women under 35 think feminist is synonymous with being pro-choice, reproductive freedom, or abortion. I am the most disgusted with this group because most all of them were ardent supporters of Obama. My thinking here is what good is rights to an abortion if you still make 77 cents to every $1 a man makes and are treated with less respect than a man in your circumstances.

As an organizer with women’s groups in the 70′s and 80′s, there were different factions then as well.

I was a member of the Women’s Political Caucus, a national organization that lobbied state legislatures to pass the Equal Rights Amendment, helped educate women and men about the social grievances of women, worked toward equal pay for equal work, helped find women to run for and get elected to political office, helped get women appointed to local, state, and national boards.

We were a serious group who took pages from the Civil Rights Movement and worked through politics.

Then there was NOW – The National Organization for Women. While many of us belonged to both groups, some of us did not like the tactics of NOW because they were the protesters, the bra-burners, the marchers and often were more the face for abortion rights and lesbian rights. Many felt this gave the women’s movement a negative image. Actually, after Naral supported Obama over Hillary in the primary, I feel the core women’s rights have suffered from losing pro-life women who believe in all of the basic rights for women, but can’t support abortion.

While most women would support lesbian rights, if lesbians become the face of or piggy-back core women’s rights, we get slaughtered for that.

We desperately need to reassemble women to get refocused on how we proceed from here. I personally am VERY offended when women like the young woman on O’Reilly presumes to speak for me. I could surely tell her a thing or two. I am just as offended when NOW spokespeople presume to speak for me and all women. Remember, only a handful of NOW groups supported Hillary and only one supported Sarah Palin. It is MORE than disgusting.

During the election it seemed women of all ages did not understand what they were doing to women’s rights by joining men with their blatant criticism of Palin and even Hillary. I had at least 10 former Hillary supporters tell me, “I just could not vote for THAT woman (Palin)”. Most would reference Katie Couric’s interviews with Palin. Thank you Katie Couric for helping set back women’s rights for at least a decade! This is especially painful in light of Couric’s OWN problems with trying to operate in what has always been a man’s job. After Couric had courageously decried Hillary’s treatment, the sexism in the primaries, she came in for more criticism.

I believe she tried to reverse the cries of fowl by bashing Sarah Palin. She then became a good ole boy and is now accepted among fellow journalists for her harshness toward Palin. I assume, the Palin rant was the path of least resistance for Couric’s career. Very sad indeed for women.

        • Maria3

          wodiej,

I agree with you. Well said. Where was she when Palin and Clinton, for that matter, were both being bashed like hell.

          • TexasMirth

The media’s silence when rumors were floated about Sarah Palin’s infant son, her teenage daughter, her accent, her pageant days, and on and on, was very revealing. There appeared to be no outrage at those pink t-shirts stating “Sarah Palin is a c**t” and no condemnation of Sandra Bernhard’s outrageous remarks, including the threats. Nothing. Had those things been said or done against Michelle Obama, just imagine the uproar. So, Bill O’Reilly has a point about the double standard, and he was right to point that out to Ms. Martin.

            • http://firefox AnnieCollier

Had those things been said or done against Michelle Obama, just imagine the uproar.

Uproar? There’d have been riots in the streets and no whitey would have escaped.

        • jbjd

Yes! Talk about hypocrisy…well, you can’t!

Someone called “fif” posted this comment on the Confluence, Riverdaughter, under the heading, “Bill O’Reilly’s Mother Would Be Ashamed,” discussing Mr. O’Reilly’s public accusation that veteran news reporter Helen Thomas is a “wicked witch.“

fif, on February 12th, 2009 at 11:39 am Said:
Daki: but you are an exception. Many of my well-educated, liberal women friends were angered by the sexism against Clinton, but had no trouble ridiculing and smearing Palin. I was beyond disgusted. When I see sisters turn on sisters, it’s the essence of ugly.

          I wrote this response.

I infer from this comment that Bill O’Reilly calling Helen Thomas a “wicked witch” is “ugly”; whereas the comment by Riverdaughter’s good friend, Darragh Murphy, founder of PUMA PAC, posted on her site, that her detractor, Christina, “ is a piece of shit who is so stupid that she thinks being swarmed by flies is the same thing as being popular,” is “the essence of ugly.”

          http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/07/19/pumapac-strikes-back-stupid-piece-of/

          They pulled my comment.

      • mary

        Texas Mirth

Although Bill O’Reilly can provide some level-headed commentary periodically, you must admit that he is a nasty piece of sexist machinery–especially in attacking an 88=year=old FEMALE JOURNALISTIC LEGEND like Ms. Helen THOMAS!

And if you think that his disgustingly thoughtless, rude, ageist and sexist comments were NOT disgustingly thoughtless, rude, ageist and sexist….then you have my sympathy and deserve full treatment for your obamyopic, bush-league proclivities….

        • TexasMirth

Mary – I never stated what I thought about the Helen Thomas issue, so keep your phony sympathy.
My response to Betty was directed at her bold printed, judgmental statement about anyone who watched THE FACTOR. It seemed like painting with a broad brush, lumping an entire segment of the population into the “mean-spirited” category because of a program choice. Come on, now, isn’t that a little harsh?

        • http://firefox AnnieCollier

No liberal bias or ageism or sexism against McCain/Palin or Hillary though. So far as liberal equality? I think that ship has sailed.

  • Get a Life

“Helen the Hag Hack” is a washed-up has been. I don’t care if she’s been covering the white house since the Lincoln era (she looks like she has.) She’s a blabbering old fool who embarrasses herself and the journalistic community. If she had any sense of decency, she would retire. “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”

    • Anee

amen to that! She a self-proclaimed super liberal and publicly professes to just loovve BO. She needs to retire and let a more objective female journalist take over, she had her chance let someone else get a chance.

      • sowsear

        Objective???? Where would she be?

      • Get a Life

I nominate ‘commenter mary’. She has the gift of gab…a good grasp of good sense posting and a flair for the frivolous and what’s more important, if she can’t dazzle them with brilliance…she can baffle them with “excrement!”

    • Anee

amen to that! She’s a self-proclaimed super liberal and publicly professes to just loovve BO. She needs to retire and let a more objective female journalist take over, she had her chance let someone else get a chance.

      GET A LIFE

YOU’RE AN IGNORANT, SEXIST, AGEIST PIECE OF GARBAGE THAT FLOATED ON THIS BLOG THROUGH SHEER EXCREMENT!

      • Get a Life

I’ve been coming here for quite sometime, I only ‘post’ when I feel the urge…and now I feel the urge! Sorry I dissed your mother, apparently…the low IQ doesn’t fall far from the tree.

the low IQ doesn’t fall far from the tree.

In your case, you would be correct.

  • dani

In regards to media matters – where were they when Hillary and Sarah Palin were being trashed by the
    liberal media?

    • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Two good videos to see, that follow this story.

      http://www.foxnews.com/oreilly/index.html

Talking Points Memo 2/11, Political Correctness Gone Mad – I think he has some points about her liberalism, and the dumb question she asked. Helen calls Obama a great gift to Democracy.

Politics, Liberal Lunacy Far left vs. O’Reilly over Reporter Joke – I think Bill makes excellent points at the end of this video, about Sarah Palin, and the left wing play.

He should have not said she sounded like the Witch, but, I think this is the perfect example of bias. They didn’t come out and defend Sarah Palin.

    • James

      Dani,

Media Matters documented ALL the Hillary bashing in the media and even defended Palin a few times.

The latest here with “Tracy Flick”:
      http://mediamatters.org/items/200901270025

“Accompanying the appointment of Kirsten Gillibrand to the U.S. Senate is the return of comparisons in the media between a female public official — previously Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, and now Gillibrand — and the character Tracy Flick from the book and movie Election — a character who has been described as “one of those people who manages to get very far in life while being thoroughly unlikable.”

      HRC documentation by MM:
      http://mediamatters.org/issues_topics/hillary_clinton

    • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

Media matters covered several areas where the record of Hillary Clinton was being smeared. I get their mail daily and didn’t know half of what I do know about certain smears.

I think it would be a proper criticism to say that MM doesn’t cover smears against conservatives. It would be a nice thing for them to correct the record regarding both sides. But I am glad they provide sourcing for their stories, which is mostly what I’m looking for, the sourcing materials.

I called them during the primary season to ask why they weren’t correcting the record when BO’s campaign was attacking her and got no response.

  • PamFlorida

I don’t get it. Clinton and Palin were on the receiving end of the most blantant sexist comments from the left-wing MSM and others during the the last 2 years. I don’t recall anyone, particularly women’s groups and party leadership, who spoke out against this sort of misogny. Women and Women’s groups were conspicuously silent in this regard and, in fact, were eager participants in the denigration of Clinton and Palin. The rabid Dems and Obots also eagerly dimissed “old” women as being irrelevent.
Women must stand up for each other, period. If you are for women’s rights, you can’t pick and choose which woman you will stand up for. That’s hypocrisy of the worst kind.

    • Peggy Sue

You’re right, Pam. And though I’m not a big fan of Bill O’Reilly [just another windbag in my mind], the “outrage” over this remark by women’s groups is beyond hypocritical. They barely said a peep over the way HRC was treated. And that was far worse. And then, they participated in the savaging of Sarah Palin without blinking an eye.

So, obviously the outrage is selective.

Should O’Reilly have said what he said? No, it was mean. But I have no respect for the left-wing reaction.

      • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

see my link above. he makes some good points about it.

        • Peggy Sue

Thanks for the link, sara. After hearing the comment in context, the explosion of outrage seems even more ludicrous. In fact, it’s almost funny that the one columnist claimed that O’Reilly threatened to “douse” or maybe drown Helen Thomas with water.

Obviously a PC world is devoid of humor or any sense of proportion.

          • AlexisM

Hasn’t everyone learned the rules by now?

            1) It’s AOK to attack any woman that doesn’t worship B-Crack. Hillary, Palin, etc. are fair game and should be berated, abused, attacked in any and all sexist fashion, including but not limited to spreading lies, gossip and untrue rumors about them.

            2) It is NOT AOK to trash anyone who worships B-Crack. Anyone who has “fallen in line” for B-Crack is off limits. Period. Anyone who worships B-Crack is to be touted as a “genius” and an enlightened individual who has seen the light while following the path of our Good Lord Jesus Christ Messiah.

            3) Journalists who tell the truth about B-Crack are bad.

            4) Journalists who lie for B-Crack, omit the truth, get tingles up their legs and fall on their knees in liberal rapture for the Fraud are good.

It’s pretty simple when you know the rules!

            • wodiej

well, I’d say that pretty well sums it up-well done!

            • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

well for the record, NQ was very vocal about having Randi Rhodes attacking Clinton and Ferraro as “f–ing whores”. No resistance in that effort from the majority of people who saw the video clip.

She was suspended then quit her job, and went on to NovaNetworks.

Standing up against sexism should be universal, I agree.

And in the “left” there is a penchant for ‘benevolent sexism’. Same is true with ‘benevolent racism’ in the left. Many white progressives (not saying most but many) are condescending and controlling of women and non-white roles. They expect lockstep politics. They can’t tolerate a Michael Steele or others who decide to be Republicans or conservatives.

Extreme views like this should be challenged too.

              But…billo is a sexist pig.

              • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

randi rhodes is a woman, so it was easier to *take her out*. Of course they threw her under the bus. And she used the F word, so it was easier to suspend her, for reflecting poorly on the company,

                • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

Well she was suspended, but then quit. So at least she made the determination about where she’d go with Air America.

      • FranSC

I agree, Peggy Sue. The condescending attitude of many women about O’Reilly’s remarks on Helen Thomas when they were silent while Hillary and Sarah were figuratively nearly stoned to death. You are right that O’Reilly should not have said what he said – it was unkind and disrespectful if nothing else.

However, (can’t believe I’m doing this) I do feel the need to speak up *for* Bill O’. Believe me, I have always been a critic of Bill O’s since I became aware of him. But, I do think he has softened a bit over the years and seems to care very much what people think of him – “The Folks” as he calls his audience.

He has tried not to be sexist as best he understands it, particularly since Hillary’s campaign. He told Hillary after their interview it was the best interview he had ever done. He was very proud of himself for such a spirited yet civil and even friendly interview.

Bill is very aware that his audience has changed to include people like many of us. I think it is unrealistic to think we (male or female) cannot criticize women and be for every women no matter what. I feel perfectly ok to rip apart women like Nancy Pelosi, Caroline Kennedy, Katie Couric, Andrea Mitchell to name a few. But I’m careful to describe the behavior I see and the reasons I think it is wrong. I would never stoop to making fun of their looks, clothes, intellect, etc. One of the women I was very critical of during the campaign walked like a horse. I privately made fun of that, but I would NEVER have written that.

With all of the above mentioned women, I consider that they not only do not further the cause of women, but even block their progress. What good is having women in influencial positions if they are going to play the same games men play against women.

Although I did not share Sarah Palin’s political philosophy, she was helping further the cause of women. I was pleased that Rosie O’Donnell came to her senses after saying some very unflattering things about Palin. Near the end of the campaign she was asked again about Palin. She held her tongue this time and said, “She’s someone I would enjoy having a beer with.” Now, that is tact! It is also kind and respectful. But when you know Rosie, you know that is no endorsement.

      PAM FLORIDA

Good thoughts. Did you read “GET A LIFE”‘s post above! That AGEIST SEXIST piece of crap calls Helen a bunch of names that should apply to Get a Life! This poster is a real looney and hates older women. What the s*it is that piece of garbage doing floating in this blog?
I don’t give a flying shit about his/her liberal or conservative views whatsoever! What I do give a DAMN about is that this FOUL-MOUTHED ‘GET A LIFE’ CRREEP is allowed to spread his/her vermin by attacking a woman of 88 with sexist-ageist WEAPONS–they ones that somebody is gonna use against HER one day soon I hope!

Politics is not the issue JERK, GET A LIFE, it’s your sexist, ageist attitudes, you goddamn JERK! nOW, I WISH YOY THAT YOUR KIDS THROW YOU DOWN THE STEPS (33 OF THEM) in THE NURSING HOME YOU’RE GONNA INHABIT ONE DAY, ASSHOLE!

        Mary…you need help!

  • UM

What the hell did Helen mean in that conference when she babbled about the “so-called terrorists”. Would she recognize a terrorist only if they attacked her in her home and attacks on other people do not matter? O’reilly is an idiot to have attacked her tone/voice/appearance whatever instead of her stupid words.

    • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

Helen Thomas recognizes the futility of calling people “terrorists”. Its a meme that doesn’t allow you to process who is enemy, why they are enemy, and how to deal with them. Instead it shocks the mind into a response that is more habitual than tactical.

  • http://sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

lol–it’s pretty funny that O’Reilly doesn’t even know which witch he’s trying to refer to! I think this is such small potatoes compared to Obama’s “99 Problems”.

Meanwhile, I would like to say a few words in defense of the Wicked Witch of the West, whose name has been unfairly hurled about as an insult a lot recently. She was THE BOMB!!!! Are you kidding me? Margaret Hamilton totally MADE that movie! Think about it–take her out and you are left with simply cuteness and fluff. She was absolutely magnificent! Please, people–give a little respect to true artistic genius! I would be flattered if someone compared something I did to that level of brilliance!

  • I’m a Linda too

Well, hold on to your hats, this one, if not previously posted, is sure to blow your top.

Brought to us by smuttists, TMZ. I wrote them, but thought you might like to highlight their gross conduct. Now we know why they report as they do. They can’t even pretend to not be bigots or misogynists.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to stop men from doing this is for women to start pointing out the obvious: that most of these guys are no prize in the looks dept either.
Get a load of the glob of loose chin fat on Bill 0′Reilly! Not very appealing in my eyes.

Of course, it’s silly and petty and childish to do this, but whining about these sexist remarks don’t seem to be doing any good. So let’s give them a dose of their own medicine.

  • ForMySons

“So called terrorists” ….Why didn’t she just call them “My little pretties” or ” The Munchkins down at Gitmo”
Her age aside, its irelevant her sex is not a shield, any male reporter who took such a stance would have to deal with a blast that had some comedic reference. If we stay with Oz, the Scarecrow( No brains) , Tin man ( no heart), or Cowardly Lion( no courage) would seem appropo.
Fair play is just that , fair play. The ultra liberal media has no heart, no brains, and no courage, that they even hide behind their pin pointed special interest identities is a disgrace.
Their cowardly attacks on any one who doesn’t agree with them are warrented in their eyes.

They are jumping all over one single comment. They don’t have to like Sarah or Hillary, but they need to understand that there is right and there is wrong. That stuff against Sarah and Hillary was wrong. Period. You claim to stand for women, then stand for all women

Here is how we deal with sexism in the work place

My company manufacturers industrial poly products and for several years suffered from quality control and morale problems on the assembly line. We had at the time a guy named Greg running the plant. We would hear constantly from the women on the line how he was condescending overbearing and rather brutish with his behavior towards them. I think this was sexism as he micro managed them and wouldn’t allow them to think for themselves. We had one particular woman on the line named Liz who had been diligently working for the past 12 years. Liz was the biggest victim of Greg’s sexism and was forced to thwart his advances as he was only really concerned with her body and not her output which was tremendous. Liz learned how to go to the top to voice her frustrations and we listened. We also realized that here was a woman that knew our business and was giving us suggestions that increased production and reduced waste.
One day we decided that we had had enough of Greg and his polarizing misogynist behavior and just outright fired him. To the amazement of everyone in the industry and those at our company we chose Liz to run the plant. Liz is the first female to run a plant in our industry. Since she took over our plant it has been running exceptionally well with reduced costs which has made us the most competitive with the highest quality in the market. Morale has increased and there are several more women working in the company. Liz allows people to think for themselves and work as a team for every body’s benefit. When I give tours some of my customers are pleasantly surprised that a woman is running the show..So are we!!
This goes farther than having Liz run the plant. We also understand that women are different than men and have issues of health and family that need to be considered and appreciated. We allow for health care and family sick days for the women employees and also we understand women have their days which us guys need to understand and be patient.
As a result the women working here can say what’s on their mind or have moments and not be afraid of the response. We have become a wonderful operating family as a result of putting women first and taking full advantage of their unique talents.

This is often the best way to make the point.
This is one of the reasons I supported Hillary Clinton, 43 men in a row…called for a shift in perspective from men to women.

The best managers I’ve ever worked with were women. The percentage of successful outcome was greater under their watch than under the men. To be clear there were plenty of male execs who were fair and did good work, but just calling out percentage…the numbers favored us when the women ran the show.

Good for you. And good for your business.

This is one of the reasons I supported Hillary Clinton, 43 men in a row…called for a shift in perspective from men to women.

I have this crazy dream..Give the women a chance to rule the world

Men and our testosterone have really made a mess of things..I bet it would be a more peaceful and equitable place.

        • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

Not a crazy dream, quite rational.

Yes, given the opportunity it might be very different indeed. It certainly is worth a try.

I’ve never voted in a primary before and did so because I really wanted to see Clinton win. I’m still glad she’s Secretary of State, if they’ll get the two men out of the way, Biden and Mitchell. Let her do her job.

My managers were all women mostly. They did so well.

          Good luck with your business.

Thank you Seattle Moss and truthtelling007 for your very generous words. However, I don’t think women should rule the world (continuously that is) anymore than men should. We should have equality, be gender-blind, give everyone the resources and opportunity to compete and let the best person win the job.

            • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

I would just welcome a shift. No group ruling too long would make sense. and I think one day we should have a sizable conversation about “benevolent sexism” or unthinking bias towards women that might also be irrational.

At least learning to accept women to be able to be in the world without the burden of their gender would be a nice step forward. Thats what would be ideal.

I’ve had men and women alike pigeon hole me into male stereotypes without room to be me, and it sucks. I don’t have to answer for other men, and sometimes I have to remind myself not to. That just buys into it all again.

              Thanks for your voice FranSC

              Hello Fran,

However, I don’t think women should rule the world (continuously that is

My thinking is that we should just give women the chance to lead…This for the most part has not happened especially here in America. Women are leading and have gained power in smaller more socialist countries, but not for the only superpower left in the world.
Having a woman lead America could make a difference with regards to policies effecting the entire planet.
              Thanks for your nice comments!

Funny how we only get outrage when liberal women are mocked and ridicule. Sarah Palin anyone? Where was N.O.W. outrage when Tina Fey, Letterman Stuart, and Leno was mocking Sarah?

The SIlence on Sarah Palin now makes it fair game for anyone to mock any woman sexism or not. Sad but true.

    • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

Mocking Palin isn’t sexism in itself, is it?
If that is so, mocking Bush is sexism too. She’s a public figure, and mockery comes with the territory.

Mocking her based on being a woman, pushing her into stereotypes, that is sexism.

There were sexist attacks on Palin, but there were also ones that were not sexist. How is Tina Fey being a sexist?

Watering down “sexism” to include any mockery is absurd, in my opinion.

Criticizing Hillary Clinton over policy isn’t sexist. Insulting her intelligence as ‘simply the wife of the president’ is sexist.

Can we show some discernment around this topic please?

      • FranSC

truthtelling007, you are right in your assessments of what constitutes sexism. I find blatant disrespect just as offensive. Let’s face it, what we say does reflect our political persuasion, and we have to be careful that we don’t use the word ‘sexist’ like the word ‘racist’ was thrown around in 2008, just because we disagree with the candidate.

With Palin, my objections came when she was disrespected and belittled – for ex., they said she was ONLY governor of a small state, didn’t go to the ivy league schools, was denegrated for being humorous, considered a dim wit for her decision not to discuss what she read which was interpreted that she didn’t read. The family hype was way over the top.

Tina Fey’s comedy act was entertaining and ok, but her very public remarks showed her distain of Palin -”After November 4th, I will happily retire that character.” Fey’s career was given quite a boost because of Palin.

Mockery does go with the territory – we certainly do our share here at NQ on Obama and Bush, but generally we give good reasons for doing so. In a sense, though, sexism is one of those things that may be hard to define. But I quickly recognize it when I see or hear it.

        • http://www.cheneywatch.org/ truthtelling007

and I can acknowledge that you find “blatant disrespect” just as offensive, but I don’t. To me respect is earned or lost. Once lost, its really up to the person who lost respect to earn it back or up to the disrespecting person to examine their own integrity.

Bush was a nobody until he became the governor of my state. Here he lost my respect, and never gained it back. Palin was disrespected for being from the least populated state, and doing so insults Alaska. I think of this as a sort of classism. Rural people count too. And yet in rural america there is a common insult to city folks. Both are absurd in my view.

The word ‘racist’ or ‘sexist’ loses strength when it is arbitrarily thrown around. To me a racist is someone who wants to regulate or allocate power and resource based on race. A bigot is a different thing entirely. Bill Clinton was smeared as a racist when he wasn’t. Ferraro was being smeared when she wasn’t being a racist. But at the same time, there were people who were disguising their racism against Obama as “issue based” when it wasn’t. You just have to examine it case by case.

I’m sick of bias against “liberals” and “conservatives” it is unthinking and ignorant. There is nothing wrong with being either. Examine the issues, not the people.

As for Tina Fey or anyone else…I’m not concerned with their imitations. I’ve done a ton of imitations for radio for over a decade. I’m well known around my old station for doing George Bush dead on. After years of editing his audio clips, and being from texas, and a penchant for voices, I had his sorta drunk slurring, backward syntax and such down. I learned to imitate Bill Clinton this past year trying to imitate Pat Robertson threatening Hugo Chavez. Its an art to imitate.

In imitating Barack Obama, I just focused on ending everything with ‘yes we can’. When I asked my wife if we can find a good meal for the night, “yes we can”. My children ask if we can solve homework problems “yes we can”. They got sick of it. But I had to figure out how to imitate the new guy because I need to be busy for the next 4 years I guess.

I was really hoping Hillary would win so I could have 4 to 8 years off. But alas, I have a vocal gig for the next 4 years.

When we resort to ad hominem abusive or circumstantial arguments we undermine our central argument. Picking on Palin for her rural roots isn’t going to show that she didn’t understand the broad range of Supreme Court decisions so far. Could she? I don’t doubt she could. But when we lampoon instead of examine, we may not make our case very well.

At the same time, the McCain camp kept her under wraps. This was stupid on their part and part of the sexist betrayal of Palin. I think she’s pretty damn sharp. But there are many areas I can criticize her and none of them are based in her gender or coming from Alaska. This is the most effective way to approach it.

Smearing Obama as being from Chicago is the same thing. Just because he comes out of Chicago doesn’t prove guilt. But his aloof behavior in dealing with this concern showed me an ignorance that I couldn’t respect. Knowing Ayers is one thing, being aloof to Ayers was different, and even more…distracting me with “but I was 8 years old” was down right insulting. I’m younger than BObama and I could figure out who Ayers was.

My decisions about BObama were based on what he did, what his campaign did, and whether the “hope” message was being lived out by his base. The vicious attacks on Hillary mixed with the finger pointing at her made me want to vomit.

I am a student of logical fallacy, and that doesn’t make me perfect in my reasoning, but it does serve as a guide for where reality gets distorted and where assumptions need be questioned.

Thanks for your views. They help open my eyes to issues beyond my own experiences and understanding.

That would be Barack. Not Ehud Barak. :)

SNL was not the only one show mocking Sarah Palin. There were anchors news smearing Sarah and spreading lies about her family.

If a female reporter would have made fun of older reporter no big deal this would not have been a issue
But when a male anchor makes fun of a female reporter
then its the crime of the century. I am sure a reporter will have an interview with M Thomas and she will have a chance to defend herself or not that is her choice fair is fair and I hope she does but to make her sound like a victim that in itself is disrespectful she is a strong lady.
And for last, why do we need all those words in the dictionary like criticizing, commenting, talking, joking, arguing when one word could be used for all: sexism
