How did this one get going? Yesterday a House Republican leadership staffer circulated a background email, which I obtained, charging that GOP staffers had been told by an unnamed Federal agency that if it got money from the stim package, it would spend “thirty million dollars for wetland restoration in the San Francisco Bay Area — including work to protect the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse.”

But I just contacted the House GOP staffer who wrote the initial email laying out this talking point, and he conceded that the claim by conservative media that the mouse money is currently in the bill is a misstatement. “There is not specific language in the legislation for this project,” he said.

Well mouse or not, there is plenty of other stupid shit in this bill. Mice are good at hiding anyway. It’s probably in there hidden behind some other piece of cheese…who in the hell would know that it isn’t?? Do you really think anyone has read over 1000 pages of that pork? Get real!

This story was already exposed as a lie. Twice on TV, once in my local newspaper.

Do you check on the veracity/accuracy of these postings or just accept talking points from Sean, Rush, Coulter and O’reilly?

ONE of the (many) reasons I, a person who had voted Democrat since ’72, voted for McCain is that I wanted a difference between the Administrative branch and the Legislative branch of the government. I wanted checks and balances. I want my Congressmen to really do their jobs, to actually read what they are signing into law. Gosh, what a concept!

And don’t give me this crap about how O tried to be bi-partisan. That is crap since it is NOT bi-partisan to expect someone to keep the name Republican and then ask him/her to act like a Democrat. It takes compromise in the sense of give and take, not compromise in the sense of giving up one’s heartfelt beliefs.

Many on both sides gripe and complain about those people who unknowingly got themselves into strange house loans and then lost their homes. We know “we” wouldn’t have signed without first checking everything out. Well, guess what, I don’t trust a Congressman of either party any more than I now trust someone trying to sell a home loan. I want to know what we’re getting into since I, UNLIKE MANY CONGRESSMEN LATELY, am paying my taxes.

So don’t tell me it’s a Republican ploy asking to have time to read when the Dems should have read the Patriot Act and didn’t. ETC.

Utter BS. First if you care about the economy, we COULD do something that actually stimulates the economy, IF that is required, which is something we might take the TIME to debate, first. You do realize that we are now doing the EXACT things that Japan did at the beginning of their Lost Decade, which is now in it’s 18th year, and WE don’t have the SAVINGS Japan had. Of course you hear the completely asinine argument that ‘Japan didn’t do enough, quickly enough.’ The really sad thing about that is WE would have to spend about $15 TRILLION to equal what Japan spent in their misguided stimulus binge.

IF you think stimulus is good then…
One of the things that might actually stimulate the economy THIS year instead of in TWO YEARS, is tax rebate checks. Studies have shown that a majority of the rebate checks from 2001 and 2008 were spent within six months, NOT over TWO years like this current plan. (The current plan calls for 3% to be spent within the first year, and 17% total spent by the end of the second year. So in two years, 83% has yet to be spent? And the tax-cut portion is a reduction in withholding of an average of $13 or less over a couple of years? Does that make any sense in light of the HURRY UP mantra?)

In what way did Republicans ‘create the problem’? Was it all that deficit spending?? So the problem was deficit spending, and the solution is DOUBLE the deficit spending? Maybe it was ALL the Republicans fault, assuming you can make a case that they were able to command the Fed to force interest rates low, and that they twisted the arm of the SEC to increase the leverage limits of the five largest lending institutions, and so on, BUT the Democrats have had the reins for the last two years! Did they put the brakes on Fannie and Freddie? Did they pass any regulations? Did they raise any alarms? Did they decry mortgage insanities at all? Just the opposite. Almost like they WANTED all this to happen.

And how do you excuse Obama’s lying? How do excuse his blatant fearmongering, just to get this passed before anyone can read it? What’s his deal with choosing tax-cheats and lobbyists, despite his empty promises to bring ‘change’?

And then we have tax-cheat Geitner saying we’re going to boldly ‘try things that haven’t been tried before’… without actually coming up with any concrete data on what that might be. THAT is the dumbest thing he could have done. Businesses need to have at least a fair idea of what the future holds, of what tax liabilities will be, of what monetary policies will be, or they don’t have the confidence to start new things, build new factories, etc.

My feeling is that even if every fact turned out to be incorrect – and only someone who has had an impartial read of the bill and has no political bias could determine that – what Kingston had to say would nevertheless be spiritually true, if not totally factually true. Marie, the legislation doesn’t refer directly to the mouse, but $30Bil is set aside for wetlands restoration which is the habitat for it and Pelosi has pushed for it’s protection many times in the past. The real question is how will thirty billion dollars for wetlands restoration help create jobs? The problems with the economy flow from the housing and banking crisis so why is congress trying to address other issues at this point? Open your eyes and you’ll see the truth. Even Obama has agreed this is a spending bill and his argument that any ole spending will fix the economy is specious. This began as a “stimulus” package, but as of the final rewrite, the average working American will receive about $10/wk in tax cuts. No one is going to be receiving a check in the mail and those who are losing their homes to foreclosure will not receive help. Later this year, another balloon payment will be due on other toxic loans and with so many out of jobs and barely able to make their mortgage payments now, there will be a flood of new foreclosures in the near future. Instead of turning the economy around, this bill of almost $800Bil will be added to an already over leveraged debt. China owns 20% of our national debt now. Borrowing more from them or from Japan (16%) or just printing more money will cause inflation and we will be unable to pay back the debt. This is a very bad idea. Republicans are making sure their fingerprints are not on this bill and the Democrats have no choice but to go along with Reid and Pelosi. This bill is a very bad idea right now.

Wow. And thanks to Obama’s Presidential Executive Order, the infrastructure jobs in this bill will go to unions or at union pay scale. Hell, I’m just a little old lady from PA with no Ivy League education, but even I can figure out that if union pay scale is 20% more than the regular labor rate, then you can hire 20% fewer people with the same money if forced to hire unions only or at union scale. So even the jobs in this bill are tainted with partisan politics, and I can’t wait until the 80% of construction workers in this country who are non-union realize they’ve been had.

When judging our government and people today, I feel it is important to remember that our founders came here for a reason, designed this nation and Her government through careful thought and lengthy consideration, wanting for America and Americans what England and the King had been determined to stifle, enjoin and eliminate. America, to them, was to be everything their previous country was not, and the limits they attempted to place on our government’s size, scope and purpose were designed to ensure that it would work.

Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly apparent that, after all this time, it has not. Considering what happened today in the chamber of their own creation, perhaps it is in that regard where many of those who signed the Declaration of Independence and, later, the United States Constitution a few hundred yards away at Independence Hall would be so disappointed. These imperfect men gave their hearts and souls to make their ideas and ideals a reality, principles and values and priorities which have today been largely taken for granted, whittled away or in some cases completely forgotten.

After 230-plus years, this nation has undoubtedly departed drastically from our founders’ design, and I cannot help but believe that, if those men had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of today’s America, they would see a government neither by the people nor for the people but rather a government instead ignoring the people and their desperate cries for restraint and responsibility.

As far as I can find, the only ones harping about a program hidden in the bill are the apologists saying that Republicans lied about a program hidden in the bill.

All the news reports I’ve found say that Republicans asked the departments slated to receive the money what they actually had plans to spend it on. In this case, there is an existing plan to do the wetlands restoration, one of the purposes of which being to ‘save’ this mouse.

SO YES, ‘stimulus’ money will be spent on a mouse. With the amount of money involved, this is likely to be the tip of the iceberg on what excrement-headed foolishness this gets spent on.

To be somewhat fairer to Democrats, they, the Republicans, and everyone on Wall Street have been brainwashed to believe the Federal Reserve would prevent anything like this from happening. The whole credit collapse is due to the housing bubble that was created on purpose by the Fed as they blindly followed Keynesian consumer-spending theory, so all the relevant politicians AND bankers were just doing their part in the ‘plan’. None of the Keynesian idiots predicted what happened, so how people can trust their prescription, which always seems to be “twice as much government spending as you actually spent” is beyond me. So if this doesn’t work, the Keynesian response is always, “You should have spent more.” That’s what Krugman is already saying.

There are already signs that a recovery may be in progress, and you can find that some economists are predicting recovery inside of a year or two. So the rush to pass this thing is partly to escape scrutiny and debate, despte Obama’s promises or openess, but it is also to get ‘something’ done that can be pointed to as the ’cause’ of the recovery. Of course if a recovery begins now, and only 3% of this stimulus is spent within the first 12 months, that will be a HARD case to make. Well, it would be without a slobberingly sycophantic press.

But what happens if we have a decent recovery that tanks again right when this ‘stimulus’ really starts to be spent in TWO years? The CBO has said that the net effect of this spending bill will be NEGATIVE, not positive, and that it would be better to do nothing at all as opposed to this particular bill. In any case, we will STILL have to face up to a tremendous debt that will have to be paid, necessitating serious tax hikes on more than just the ‘rich’, especially since they don’t particularly pay all that much percentage-wise anyway, with all methods available to shield income. Ask around. It’s easy for the rich to reduce tax-liability, and the higher the rates go, the more rich politicians like Pelosi and Wrangel will create ways to shield their income from the IRS.

The spokesperson clamimed it was for “shovel ready” projects and was to be set up by the Army Corps of Engineers, but would include protection of the habitat for the Salt Marsh Mouse. In all fairness, he claimed it would create 100 new jobs and I have looked at some of what is available on the Internet, but it’s hard to find specific projects.

I have looked at the bill and the allocations are vague, set dollar limits and then more or less allow the agancy or state to make a decision where the money will be spent. Take a look at the actual bill decide where you think the money will go, whether it will benefit the economy in the long run and ease the housing and banking crisis.

$30 billion earmarked for ACORN is as much a figment of the imagination as $30 million earmarked for mice.

This is not to say that ACORN won’t receive some funding, along with other organizations providing similar services. The mice may even benefit from habitat restoration projects–although it’s unlikely they’ll receive any direct payments or job opportunities.

As usual, it is much safer to attack a woman, than a man.

I don’t think it has anything to do with her being a woman (and it seems to me to be a kind of inverted form of sexism to say so). It is about a not very bright person who is in a position of power that she should not be in.

Since it is federally protected land, the Army Corps of Engineers is in charge of any work done there.

This post is not about that mouse and I’m surprised you are so linear in your thought processes. This post is about the spending bill, it’s possible abuses and whether or not the American people have been had. This is the basic idea I referred to and my opinion. I am not OT.

I did not post a comment based on ignorance of what the bill contains, because I have read as much as I could without being sick. And, NO, I didn’t see a specific reference to a mouse, but I did see the following from MSNBC:

I realize you cannot prove such a provision doesn’t exist in the bill since nothing specific is listed and I can’t find the $30mil appropriation I saw yesterday (I’m going to keep trying). However, IMO, you are unnecessarily aggressive. You have a habit of telling people here what they should or should not say or discuss. You may imagine yourself as someone who is always truthful, but it is your truth. It is more profitable to be a TRUTH SEEKER and a little humility wouldn’t hurt either.

ACORN should be given tonnes of cash. It is a great organization and does a lot of good work. Gets a lot of people voting who would not otherwise.
