[Update: Vote Underway] The Senate debate is getting heated!

UPDATE: The vote is underway. (6:47 p.m. ET). Update #2: “Vote to be held open until roughly 10:30 pm, so Ohio Sen. Brown can return from a memorial service for his mother,” via Time‘s Mark Halperin. (MSNBC reports that President Obama lent Sen. Brown a government-owned plane so that he can make it back in time for the vote. He’ll land at Andrews AFB. WOW!!! Talk about going the extra mile for a vote!!!)

pelosireidcross[IMAGE: "Read the list of House Democrats who did not support the stimulus plan-- click here.."] Check out C-Span2. Charles Schumer is yelling at the Republicans! The Senate was supposed to vote at 2:30 p.m. ET, but it doesn’t sound like they’re even close yet to voting! (I wonder if Harry Reid has enough votes without Teddy Kennedy around.) Of course the measure passed the House, without a SINGLE Republican vote, again.

Something else that has struck me: Those three Republicans — Specter, Snow and Collins – who voted with the Democrats have so much power, that it’s scary! They are calling ALL the shots on what can remain or must be removed from the bill. This will go down as one of the strangest pieces of major legislation, given the deep divide between the parties.

Uh oh. Orrin Hatch is bitching about the Republicans who have joined the “ultra-liberal Democrats.”

These senators are really hot under the collar! No bipartisanship in evidence today!!!

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Hatch just used the S word – socialism!

      • Andy

And a couple of hours ago the House passed this “compromise”
        (bill) with 0 Republican votes…

        • http://noquarter foxyladi14

          nine dems voted no too..

          • Carol HAKA

Hopefully they will be the only Dems in office in 2010.

            • Andy

I don’t have cable (hence no C-Span) any updates on how many votes Reid can so far muster? NPR just reported that a vote is coming down tonight; so who are the 60?

Newsweek just used the “S” word too. Check out that article: “We’re All Socialists Now.”

        This sucks.

The French don’t have to worry about defending the western world as America does.
          I guess let’s go socialist!
Problem is who is going to protect us…Or more likely..Who will we let defeat us.

          • AlexisM

Well, relevant to the France comment, can someone tell me what the hell this is about? It’s getting really scary around here.

France Lobbies to Take Command of NATO Post in Norfolk, Virginia

Entangling alliances come home to roost.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) bases in Europe and Central Asia are stocked with U.S. military commanders, and that doesn’t raise the antenna for a majority of Americans. But, how about a key NATO military base in Norfolk, Virginia under the command of the French Army?

Well, you won’t find that story in the company newsletters that pass for mainstream media in the United States. But news sources in France reported last week that, “France was in talks to put a French general in charge of two [NATO] command posts: one in Norfolk, Virginia, responsible for laying out the long-term vision of the Atlantic alliance, and the other an operational command based in Lisbon [Portugal].”

The report states that French president Sarkozy has already won U.S. approval for handing over control of the Norfolk operation known as the Allied Command Transformation (ACT), which was established in 2003 to meet the challenges of globalizing the reach of NATO in the post 9/11 world.

If the French want in, how much can the world’s largest debtor nation really say no? Welcome to the downside of international military and trade alliances.

If you’d like to keep your favorite Bordeaux on the table but would prefer the French leave their military commanders back home, this would be a good time to contact your Congressmen in Washington. Ask them to explain their understanding of what the “long-term vision of the Atlantic alliance” is. The John Birch Society thinks it is merger of the United States into a one world government. But, perhaps we are mistaken. Maybe if we could just find out what ACT is really up to our opinions might be modified somewhat. As it stands, ACT’s vision statement seems rather open ended: “NATO’s leading agent for change; enabling, facilitating and advocating continuous improvement of military capabilities to enhance the military interoperability, relevance and effectiveness of the Alliance.”

Congressmen that might have particular insight to what is going on at ACT are the ones who have already signed up as members for a proto trans-Atlantic parliament under the Transatlantic Policy Network. Drop them a line asking if they believe putting French generals in command of a strategic military post in Norfolk, Virginia is good for upholding and defending the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foreign and domestic.

When you get their answer back, be sure to post it to our new Letters From Congress campaign. Then, start spreading your Congressman’s response around to those who think all this talk about losing U.S. independence and sovereignty to the North American Union, the WTO and NATO’s parent organization – the United Nations – is just bunk.

If the JBS opposes it, I think it’s a damned good idea.
The John Birch Society is the Cold War era equivalent of the mid 19th-Century Know-Nothings without the intellectual pretense.

            • JozefAL

Incidentally, if the base is designated as a NATO base, then the commander of the base should be of any nationality whose government is a part of the NATO alliance.
I do have to wonder, though, if the JBS would be as up in arms if the British or Candaian governments were making the request. (Well, knowing the little brains that make up the JBS, I guess they would, especially if they’re ignorant enough to believe that NATO has any connection with the “one-world government” boogeyman they enjoy perpetuating. With luck, the JBS might decide to join the 21st Century before 2099–but I doubt it.)

              • Jaycephus

                One-world bogeyman? Bogeyman?

That single phrase just invalidated everything you said.

we’ve been socialist for a long time; the poor working people have been subsidizing the rich fat-cats sucking at the gov’t teat for decades. this really won’t be much of a change, i’m afraid.

  • Tess

I wanna come down on the side of the senators who want to delay voting until thye’ve read the bloody thing, all 800 pages.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

      Exactly!

Speaking of which, has any of you found a copy of that bill? Larry Johnson wants to read it! But, as i wrote in my 6 a.m. story today, the bill was being written BY LOBBYISTS and even senators’ staffers couldn’t get a copy for their own senators to read! This is NUTS!!!!!!

      • http://sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

They ‘promised’ the American people to have it out for 48 hours before voting on it, but–surprise–they didn’t!!!

      • AlexisM

Susan, I sent you a link to a video of the bill with some real fun. Like the handwritten little notes all over it. When you see the sheer size and volume of it you know that none of these buffoons could have actually read it. It’s a frigging mess and I am irate. This really is taxation without representation.

      • bert

Susan – if no one has given it to you or Larry yet – open this link and about half way down the page you will have links to the bill. It comes in two parts. First part is almost 500 pages.

If there is any justice in the world… and I won’t hold my breath or anything… then Maine and Pennsylvania can be the pilot program states for socialism… in honor of these three senators who made all this so possible. Well, I wonder what the “mission accomplished” speech will be like? I am guessing some styro-foam pillars would be nice… maybe this time wearing a toga? a crown made of olive branches would be good… maybe a little over the top? “The One” can pull it off. ;)

    • Judy L. NC

ROFLMAO! Surely they saved the styrofoam Denver Ocropolis. . .

      Reduce, reuse, recycle.

    • TorchWood

Screw that. I’m moving from Philly back to Delaware. At least the stench of Biden has gone down a little.

    • Murray

Docelder – I’m inclined to picture his next Big One to involve a fake Lincoln beard and a stovepipe hat ;)

    • Jaycephus

We’ve already got a pilot-state for socialism: California. It’s stewing nicely. Should be ‘done’ shortly. One of the reasons Texas and other low-tax, low-cost-of-living states are getting businesses moving here. Escape the punitive environment of California. But thanks to the socialism in this damn spend-and-waste bill, citizens of fiscally responsible states will pay for the excesses of California. Now there’s some socialism for all of us.

lol And Sherrod never needs too much convincing that something else requires his attention. :)

I still have a bitter taste on his conduct in 2005-2006 even though Paul Hackett pissed me off with his “spread rumors about Sarah Palin that she had an affair” post on the Orange Ars blog.

      • C.S.

What can you expect when checks and balances disappeared sometime between 9/11/01 and 11/4/08 and elections have become as murky as swampwater. If you want a democracy you have to be ever vigilant and hold your elected leaders accountable. Somewhere, sometime, we have given an inch and they have taken the proverbial mile.

  • I’m a Linda too

Without Kennedy, they don’t have the votes.

And…gee, isn’t that THEIR FAULT for RUSHING IT THROUGH and not wating to work with the other party.

And you can bet the THREE are not going to rush until they’ve instpected the entire bill. As it should be.

SO. Even though O was confident he could demand the bill to sign on Monday, because Nancy Pelosi had a 6pm flight to Italy, the Senate MUST aprove it before O has anything to sign. Oh wait, he may not know that. He was only in the Senate for 2 years before he started campaigning for president.

    • obamastolemyboyfriend

Without Kennedy, they don’t have the votes.

What???? Oh, dear! But I thought Barrakula was all about uniting folks and working across the aisle! who would have foreseen this? (No quarter readers-that’s who!)

      LOL!

      • beebop

Then why was McCain congratulating them on their victory?

    • I’m a Linda too

I stand corrected, without Kennedy and Brown, they don’t have the votes.

They will have exactly 60, not the 61 they previously had WITH Brown, which gives them the min. to pass.

  • PamFlorida

[“Make them filibuster” has been a rallying cry of rank-and-file Democrats all week, who say the strategy would portray Republicans as obstructionists and ultimately lead to legislation that better reflects the interests of the party.]

The INTERESTS OF THE PARTY???? WTH. How about the INTERESTS of the PEOPLE? These politicians live in a bubble on another planet. I’m an American before a Dem and this spending spree doesn’t sit well with me at all. I don’t believe the Repubs are being partisan or obstructionist where this legislation is concerned. Obviously, a few courageous Dems have problems with it as well.
I told Rep. Wexler’s gate keeper that if this bill passed in spite of the public concern over the cost and efficacy of this boondoggle, I would be calling back to demand every cent of what’s coming to me and mine. After all, we’re paying for it.

    • Ellen D

I don’t think they’d have to filibuster. All they need to do is stand up and begin reading it aloud. Same thing.

  • beebop

Funny thing is most people think the tax credit for houses and cars are still there ….

  • wodiej

Maybe the Republicans are trying to stall….

  • Chris Martin

I doubt that more time will mean that congresscritters will read the bill, much less understand all the nuances of the legalese speak in the bill. Only a handful of folks will read the bill start to finish even if they have forever to do so. (I’ll have more to say on that soon)

In most cases, the outcry for “more time” is theatrical grandstanding. The same Republicans shouting for more time were happy to rush shit through when they held the gavels. On the flip side, the NOW NOW NOW Dems were crying for more time and more transparency in the process when the GOP was in power.

Both sides are fear mongers or champions of transparency and bipartisan process only when it suits them. The GOP will get no praise from me for asking for more time. I have a hard time forgetting what the process was like a couple years ago. They have no problem with bully tactics when it suits them. The Dems won’t get praise from me either, though.

    • beebop

Whether you believe they will read it does not mean that this should be pushed through so that it can be signed on President’s day …. I am tired of historical significance and his idiot. Enough. He should be a little more worried about RESULTS.

    • AlexisM

I don’t think it’s time to play partisan, just because people are mad at Bush. This Bacon Bill will affect multiple generations to come. If the GOP is being intelligent, and some people actually want to read what they are supporting, then good for them. I don’t care where it comes from, which side, but I want some transparency and responsibility here. It’s my taxpaying dollars and I can’t give the insanity of the left a pass just because of something I can’t change any longer.

How can Dick Durbin stand there and lie?

    • Docelder

He has his fingers crossed? ;)

  • Peggy Sue

It’s 5:30 pm EST. Johnny Mac is up right now, speaking to the “generational theft” that is facing us all. He’s talking about TARP3, coming to a theater near you and how none of this legislation was bi-partisan.

Short and sweet but he warns that we need to listen to the public and hammer these things out. Now, Durbin who says critics of the bill are of the “do-nothing” club. He’s singing the praises of Obama’s earnest attempt to seek true cooperation. Durbin is dissing the generational theft claim: how will the next generation feel if their parents lose their jobs, their houses or cannot continue college.

I’ve got a question: how will the next generation feel if the country is brought to its knees and we’re totally bankrupt without options or any avenues left? You can forget college. You can forget those jobs. Get your cup and pencils out because you, little ones, will be begging along with the rest of us.

The vote is going on now. A foregone conclusion, I suspect. This one belongs to Obama and all his cronies. It’s like watching a train wreck in progress.

    • beebop

I personally intend to make sure that I campaign and vote for nothing but Republicans to restore the checks and balances. I feel like I am watching the revolution …. who knew it would be live on C-SPAN?

      • Peggy Sue

No, this isn’t a revolution. This is the sacking of Rome. I will never forgive these bastards for this. Never!

        • AlexisM

Especially the latest news…sending a special plane to pick up that one Senator who is at a funeral – just so they can make sure that Senator pushes this POS Bacon Bill through. They’ve never done that, ever. And we’re paying for it. Great country we are living in, huh? I will never, ever, ever forgive the left for this. And I will change my party and never vote for another Dimocrat again. This is the complete end of democracy.

          • Peggy Sue

Yeah, picking up a plane for their own funeral, I predict. Everything I read, says this will not work but merely line the pockets of the O’s devotees.

            Patronage at its finest.

Lobbyists got to read this bill but the American public and its representatives did not. We want a real Revolution? We start right now. Disaffected Dems, Republicans and anyone else who wants to join the bandwagon.

Throw the bastards overboard. Once upon a time, we had a Tea Party. Now we have blind and deaf Congressmen and women. And witless Senators.

In 2010, we can throw a number of these bastards into the harbor. Where they belong!

At 6:45 EST, they’re waiting on 3 votes with the count at 57: Brown [D], Bayh [D], and Kristen Gillibrand [D]. The magic number is 60.

Let’s see if Gillibrand has any real guts!

            • Peggy Sue

It’s 6:58 EST. Gillibrand just folded.

              It’s a done deal. We’re cooked!

              • AlexisM

Grrrr…PeggySue…We’re only cooked momentarily. Now it’s time to take even more action against this BS. They will pay in 2010 and 2012. The Fraud is a one-termer, max. And the backlash factor is enormous. Buh Bye liars, cheats and scum.

  • beebop

The stock market is going to drop like a stone Monday morning. Count on it.

    • StPaulite

Frankly it SHOULD drop, especially the big bank stocks — everyone knows those companies are totally insolvent but nobody, especially the executives, want to admit it.

      • beebop

Yeah … well we didn’t know that when we invested. And those people who couldn’t afford those Fannie and Freddies? I think they owe all of us some explantion …. don’t you? I mean. I invested in America. What were they thinking?

  • Docelder

    He’s talking about TARP3

and if we haven’t collapsed the dollar into hyperinflation by then, well then onto TARP4. I am past thinking this is about any bailout. We are seeing a manufactured meltdown of our economic system. The middle class is targeted for extinction.

    • cynic

Worrying about inflation is so passé. All of the really trendy economists are worrying about deflation now.

(I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be worrying about, since simple explanations and common sense seem have gone out the window. I read recently that theorists believe it’s very important that we maintain a healthy rate of inflation. Welcome to Wonderland.)

      • lark

I kind of think what legislators are saying is not to worry about absolutely anything. Why? It seems to me that very soon most couples will avoid having children like the plague. If that happens, then the country will have no option but to bring in tons of foreigners to fill the job slots. Once that happens the country might as well merge with other countries or something because our foundation principles and values will be hardly remembered; maybe in some kind of documentary on History channel. So…I think that we shouldn’t worry anymore because America is destined to become recognizable in terms of principles and values.

      • AlexisM

cynic…stop repeating what you are told to. People are most worried about hyperinflation…Look it up since you seem not to know much about the stuff you spew.

        • cynic

Common sense tells me inflation should be taking off like a rocket. The thing is, it isn’t. We’ve already entered deflationary territory:

          http://www.forecasts.org/inflation.htm

Go figure. It doesn’t make sense to me, either.

          • Jaycephus

But my understanding is that an enormous amount of money has been printed in the last few months, but not yet quite ‘released’. What happens if this money is added to the money supply. I’m sure it’s part of the strategy to combat deflation, since a decrease in the money supply can cause deflation, and an increase should cause inflation.

          • Jaycephus

I work for a small engineering company that does a bit of manufacturing, and I believe we’ve just been told by suppliers to expect higher prices on stuff like copper wire, cable, and such. I could see it going either way at this point, since if demand is decreasing, then the prices should go down, but on the other hand, with all the printing of money, and the latest consumer spending news, it just might inflate from here on. So much theory, so little certainty. If the government would just ‘maximize certainty’ instead of promising ‘things that have never been done’, this thing might just clear up a lot quicker.

    • Brodie

That is exactly what I’ve been thinking, too. I don’t see how in hell the entire world’s economy can suddenly be in the tank. I think it is all a manufactured “construct”, much like the “election” of That One. Probably brought to us by the very same folks, too…

Well, looks like everyone’s going to be paying for this, BIG TIME. Whoops–just looked in my wallet and checked my bank account, and I’m pretty much broke. My meager 401K is about gone. Guess my kids and grandkids are going to have to pay for it, BIG TIME. Whoops–I guess my kids and grandkids are broke too. I guess we’ll just have to print some money to pay for this, maybe add some new denomination bills with lotsa zeros so as not to burn out the printing presses. There! you see how easy it is to find a solution! Now how many bizillion dollar bills does it take to buy a loaf of bread?

I agree. I think the lot has been cast. Democrats are pretty sure the future of the country is not in its diversity but in its TRANSFORMATION from one held by Americans and American values to one held by just anyone that venture in with WHATEVER values.

My question is, who the hell have given these people the right to bid our country out from the hands of those who built it to those who grab it? With what right and what authority are they doing this?

What the hell will I tell my granddaughter, what?

I just listened to charlie gibson refer to 0mama “winning.” Is the presidency now an NBA game, or the equivalent? And. No mention of what it means to the American people. Just the ego of one Chicago dirty politician. I am so sick I will never ever vote for a Democrap(sic) again.

    • oowawa

      0mama “winning

Wow. I’m not familiar with “winning,” so I’m not sure about the proper protocol. Are we supposed to

      1–slap high-fives all around?

      2–bump fists?

3–throw down the secret O salute?

How about if we just turn our pockets inside-out and shrug at everyone we meet!

      • PKJayne

Inow this isn’t funny……buttttt this has me rolling on the floor.

3–throw down the secret O salute?

      • Ferd Berfle

        LMAO, especially the shrug part.

      • Ferd Berfle

        4-Brush off your shoulder.
5-Scratch your cheek with your middle finger.

        • oowawa

LMAO Ferd, I forgot about those. And then there’s always the butt-bump, though that might not go over too well with strangers in the street. So many ways to celebrate this momentous Obamic Victory!

      • Jaycephus

6-Fly your Obama Flags by pulling your pant’s pockets out to show how empty they are.

Charles Gibson is a punk; yesterday he kept on talking about the Gregg debacle with such an obvious contempt for Gregg that was so bias that was laughable; especially because he always talks and looks as if he has a chronic constipation…

From Insight Analytical’s blog concerning the Stimulous Bill.

“Starting with a revealing review of the actual contents of HR1, a bigger picture emerges which many might consider pulp science fiction. Unfortunately, it’s one we’ll all soon be living unless Americans wakes up and act on Congress and the Media.”

On CNN they’re referring to it as Obama’s “victory.”

    • oowawa

On CNN they’re referring to it as Obama’s “victory.”

Gee whiz, trixta, I guess this is historic! We’ll be telling grandkids about this: I remember exactly what I was doing when the senate passed the Landmark Super Duper Economic Salvation Bailout Bill! A victory indeed! It’s kind of like another great leader who is renowned for his monumental victory, King Pyrrhus of Epirus back around 280 BC. I’m sure that Pyrrhus’s name can finally be retired when in the future we speak of an Obamic Victory.

    • I’m a Linda too

Good, then Obama gets blamed for it’s failure and debt.

    • Jaycephus

      What the… ?

What kind of contest was it when you merely have to have your Democratic majorities in Congress vote? They act like there was ever some doubt that it would pass! Like he HAD to get out there and really campaign and twist arms. Slobbering Love Affair indeed. Media Obamasms to follow. Wear your raincoats, folks.

Damn, these guys (and gals) are good!

As through this life I wandered,
I’ve known lots of funny men–
Some will rob you with a six-gun,
And some with a fountain pen.

But as through your life you travel,
As through your life you roam,
You will never see an outlaw
      Drive a family from its home . . .

I’m sure Sherrod Brown is now too thrilled that he has to fly back to DC for their vote when he hasn’t had time to read a thing and has had other things on his mind, because Obama made the demand HE wants to SIGN it MONDAY.

Now he has to leave his family during his mothers wake, board a friggin small plane and fly to DC, vote and then return back to Cleveland area.

Personally I think Sherrod should cast Nay for all the grief they’re putting him through. :D

    • DS

Maybe Obama was annoyed Brown didn’t put his mother’s service off for a month and a half so he could be there for an earlier vote? That tactic worked out swell for Obama with his grandmother’s service.

  • OhioMary

Just saw this as part of the stimulus package -Democratic leadership requires stimulus job access for illegal aliens. Secret negotiations.

  • Andy

MSNBC reports that President Obama lent Sen. Brown a government-owned plane so that he can make it back in time for the vote. He’ll land at Andrews AFB.

I guess the fuel and crew for this “flight” is being paid by tax-payers money? Why? Is this legal??

  • MrX

Obama is trying to usurp black Friday. Friday the 13th to boot. Should be a sweet one.

I thought Kennedy is back in the Senate.

  • Dave

The California rats are already saved, they are in the House and Senate !!! Pelosi’s 30 million boondoggle. This bitch needs to be put to sleep at the local dog pound !!

  • beachnan

Dave-totally unnecessary comment. If you are really angry with the stimulus package, then you should direct your comments and your rage at “that one”, Obama. Nobody should be remarking about putting someone to sleep. A little over the top-much.
