Think the right will lay off Obama because he’s so unifying? That instead of attacking him, they’ll join hands and dance in a joyful circle of “oneness” with him? Think again. They’re already out there scouring everywhere for any dirt they can get on him, including a major “hit” movie (see below). Right now, numerous ‘winger blogs are crowing over this story: “A Flag Obama Supporters Salute?,” from Captain’s Quarters blog: “Oh, my. Barack Obama may want to call his new Houston office and suggest some decorating ideas. Take a look at the flag flying in the office at the moment: …”

No, that’s not a Texas state flag with a picture of Obama on it. It’s the flag of the Castro-led Cuba regime, with Che Guevara’s face superimposed on the side. A Fox report from Houston captured this image as it showed Obama supporters celebrating his momentum after Super Tuesday.

Does Obama know his Houston supporters honor a terrorist in his campaign office? I’m sure he doesn’t. However, it would behoove him to ensure that the flag gets taken down and that he renounces any affinity for Che and the Fidel Castro regime. …

Me? I think there’s a knuckle-headed idiot in Obama’s Houston office who doesn’t have the basic common sense not to display such a flag.

Well, now that I think about it, there actually is a lot more to it. It calls into question the level of knowledge and extent of political sophistication — as well as a basic lack of good ol’ common sense — of a lot of Obama followers. And where in the hell was the paid staffer in charge of that office? Didn’t he or she object and demand its removal? Especially before a local Fox News affiliate filmed the office for a news report? My god. How STUPID can you get.

I have 100% certainty that you’d ever find such a clueless enraptured-by-the-left staffer or volunteer in EITHER the Hillary Clinton or former candidate John Edwards campaign offices anywhere in the U.S. Let alone such a flag in any of their offices.

Obama has a gift for communication and a heart in the right place. What he lacks is a specific agenda, an ability to make decisions, and a platform other than the vapid redundancy of “change”. He isn’t ready for prime time.

I don’t think winning caucuses agrees with Obama. He’s becoming more psychotic by the day. He wants the super delegates if they support him but doesn’t want the votes to count in Florida and Michigan. I think he has a hard time with Democracy–because he can’t stand competitors. He hates boomer women and gays. I hope if Obama is the flavor of the month for February — by March he is just a sick afterthought.

Four years ago, I got John Kerry shoved down my throat because he was supposedly “electable” — that’s what the media told the sheep-like Democrats who voted for him in my caucus. Now the sheep think that Obama is some kind of wunderkind, never thinking through first the kind of fight he’d have in a general election (and how many independents would prefer a far more experienced man like McCain), or the paralysis he’d face in the White House if he made it. He’d get so little done, it’s pathetic. God I wish people would wake the fuck up.

Susan, I agree with your comment about Larry’s starting to morph into a parody of a decent blogger, but your comment about Kerry shows how little you know about Presidential politics. Do you have any idea how hard it is to strike down an incumbent President? Any? Don’t screech about Kerry’s non-electibility when he came within a gnat’s eyelash of taking down Bush. Without electoral fraud Bush would have been sent back to Crawford. Johnson raises valid points about Obama’s candidacy and Obama had damned sight better start addressing them if he wants to turn his potential blowout into a real one. Otherwise, you (and I others desiring change) will be looking at the hind end of the blowout against McCain.

You are not addressing the biggest problem Kerry had. With Iraq going as bad as it was he should not have had a problem winning by a solid margin. He got trashed by the Swiftboat crowd as well as by the media who were willing to jump in with the right wing talking points about him being an effete elitist. (Read not manly enough.) Granted the media was not as hard on him as they were on Clinton and Gore, but they still kept mocking him for a lot of things, repeating right wing spin. They actually talked about how Kerry should have known better than to – gasp – windsurf! His campaign did not respond quickly enough, but the real problem, as Bob Somerby keeps pointing out at dailyhowler.com, was that Democrats passively sat back and let it happen. It is always more effective when others defend a candidate. If he or she has to do this themselve, they look defensive, which always appears weak.

There has been a well organized right wing grass roots attack network that jumps in when their guys get criticised, faily or not, but Democrats seem to sit around waiting for Mommy and Daddy to fix things. And Democratic leaders are reluctant to defend their own, fearing to get dirtied by the fray or offend their buddies in the media. This happened in the 90′s with the Clintons and again with Gore and Kerry. We all bear some of the blame.
The good thing this time around is that people are starting to push back as MSNBC is beginning to learn. I am afraid, though, that Democrats will only do this if they see racism or sexism, not just unfair bias against our candidates. We have to make it clear to the media that there will be as big a price to pay for unfair treatment of Democrats as there has been for being hard on Republicans.

Thanks for educating me. Perhaps I wasn’t precisely clear. (For the record, I was a Deaniac.) Am aware of the history of presidential politics, but thought there was a better-than-usual shot to bring Bush down.

At my caucuses and on the media, everywhere, endlessly, all I heard was that John Kerry was the “electable” one. (That was after the media had descended on Howard Dean and turned him into the looney he wasn’t, and Kerry/Gephardt had secretly run vicious TV attack ads against him in Iowa.)

That was his one big selling point — I’m electable! Turns out he had a heck of a time impressing average voters (who of course don’t take the time to really study issues, and didn’t know that, for one thing, he’s a wonk on energy and the environment).

Then those debates! Bush was so bad that if he merely made it through, the press praised him. But I couldn’t imagine how people could watch that embarrassingly ignorant, inarticulate boob and ever manage to vote for him.

I did support him — even held a fundraiser for him, and I showed his film about his Vietnam years at the public library. And I repeatedly replaced the Kerry/Edwards signs that Bush goons tore down in my front lawn, and removed the Bush bumper sticker they put over my K/E sticker.

I was plenty pissed off when he just folded and didn’t fight the Ohio illegalities … although I could see that it would take a horribly long time and he’d be crucified for doing it. (He should have unleashed John Edwards and let him lead the fight.)

In fairness to Che, he wasn’t our guy. Castro was, until Ike flip-flopped and refused to meet him when we took him to the White House.

Well, it may have been the OVP’s office/mansion to be more exact. So basically you could say Castro was on the table of denial plausibility.

Better the evil you know than the evil you don’t know. Che was seen as a wild one, Castro was one who would act in predicted and trained fashion. Pity the tobacco lobby owned so much a stake in our foreign policy dictates of the time.

That’s what made him an enemy. We could of had a democratically chosen leader backed by popular votes from common folk. The power firms and Wall St. types wanted a classic venture capital puppet instead.

Still, putting that banner up in a campaign office is a bit of a reach. Not ready for prime time, though it could be photo shop for all I know….

Kids and bands use his iconographic image today. Including the band Rage Against the Machine, which toured Cuba to standing room only crowds and sold American music to Cuba’s young adults.

It’s not a very politically savvy move for traditional or conservative votes though.

I wear a Che shirt at times, a gift from a former business partner. He said I was the revolutionary type, it never sold at his store. Music downloads killed the record store. It was a way of life for him, it was a hobby for me. Getting paid to jam music and read HST as a fringe benefit, then the Bush boom and happened and the store closed.

So much for being all about the music. If it can be that way for a little time in your life, it’s worth its weight in gold, every second of it.

That’s why it’s so much fun to see musical friends share experiences here, brings back some really good times.

When I get really bored, I “think” in music, ie, music as a replacement for the spoken word, even without lyric.

So, I “hear” the emotion in, say, a Marshall Crenshaw guitar solo, a Neko Case sustained vocal note, or Chopin’s Prelude in E minor, and I try to understand what the musician is communicating, non verbally, matching it to other non verbal cues.

It doesnt mean anything, but it’s fun.

Makes boring, pretentious people (criminal politicians being the worst offenders) more tolerable, the little girls DON’T understand, and Dick Cheney can really boogie to Jerry Lee, did you know? .

It’s like the e-mail a neighbor sent me that he’d received on a big mailing to lots of local people — full of factual errors about Obama and very negative inferences about the church he attends in Chicago (although its exclusive black membership and preference for ties to Africa rather than the U.S. are worrying).

It again doesn’t matter that it’s incorrect.

MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people will get this stuff, or hear the whispers in barber shops or across backyard fences, and they will believe it.

Well, Shirin, it actually is more a public service. Every candidate will attract their share of hysterical detractors. If anyone is going to sniff out problems, these people will. However, I do find it fun to debunk their claims or otherwise conclude their “mountains” seem really to be molehills. For example, the wildly crazy arguments that Obama is in bed with that Auchi guy.

My favorite made up fact so far is the assertion that Obama’s people sent Dick fricking Morris to Kenya to stir up that hornet’s nest. Low point was strained arguments that a racist comment was really a statement of cultism. Fun stuff, otherwise.

Well, I have to tell you that this Auchi thing is very strange in a number of ways.

You know, Auchi is a very big, important, and well-known Turkmen clan in Kirkuk, but I never heard of any Chaldean Auchi, and so far I cannot find anyone I know who has either, and yet this guy is supposedly Chaldean?

And he was supposedly such a big, important person to Saddam, and yet most people, some of whom were very well-connected to the regime, have not heard of him at all.

And yet suddenly he financed 9/11, was “Saddam’s right hand man” (a bit of patent nonsense), and Saddam’s primary supplier of weapons (another bit of demonstrable nonsense), and – miracle of miracles! – he is a critical influence in Barak Obama’s life, only no one can present anything but pure speculation by way of substantiation. There is nothing real, and nothing that does not require a huge stretch of credulity to connect Auchi with Barak Obama politically or in any other way.

It all just might be a bit too convenient and well timed, perhaps? I don’t know. I don’t support Obama, I don’t support Hillary (largely for many of the same reasons), and I am getting a bit sick and tired of the “all Obama all the time” zone around here.

Sorry, but Morris did go to Kenya to work on Odinga’s campaign and there is evidence that former Clinton staffers who now work for Obama got him to go. Since Obama has supported Odinga, this is not a big stretch.

well, to chime in, without advocating, but relaying…I don’t know where the office was set up, but i’m quite familiar with Houston’s political cliques…especially the lefties…
Che is viewed quite different than a “thug” or a “terrorist” in many of the circles around here. To many, don’t know how many, Che represents both resistance to American empire, but to white colonial empire especially. The roots of this should be noticed above the image that people stop at.

I admit, I know nothing about Che, outside a timeline of events. I know I don’t support restoration of the Batiste Cuba of corruption and I generally support nationalism as an intermediate step to true sovereignty. After a while nationalism becomes something entirely different. But to a people like Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, it seems that it was a logical consequence to outside manipulation.

The US cuban policy is disgusting. It is the blight of our hemisphere and has only served to keep Castro in power, if you think thats a bad thing. Chavez feeds from the same misfortune and the United States still hasn’t learned.

I may be politically naive, but what Iraq did in 1971 with nationalizing the oil, with Morales doing the same thing, I can’t imagine I’d do much different if you elected me to the highest offices of those countries.

The same is true of a small sense of national identity I have when I consider multi-national corporations who take from our federal, state and local systems and give nothing back and fight like hell for their own sovereignty. Halliburton didn’t like our laws so they relocate their headquarters during the middle of a war. Microsoft is almost as powerful as the united states governement. You name it, we have conflicting interests to our national interests.

Che represents resistance to this in the minds of many younger active folks down here. The Marxist ideal is alive in many of them, and I can see why. They are sick of McNation. They are sick of racism, sexism, and bigotry. I don’t believe they have a workable, pragmatic future unless they are counting across many generations.

I will say, I respect their dedication, ability to work together to mount protests about police brutality, minute men immigration bigots, and many more causes they find important.

I don’t know where this picture was taken. Just calling it Obama’s office isn’t enough. I’ll see where it is taken and provide context.
I acknowledge what is being said about how this will be spun, especially by Fox…but then I’m moved to say, To hell with Fox, I don’t give a shit what they say…or was that MSNBC….I’m so confused.

I didn’t assume anything about “obama supporters”, i’m only relaying what I know about the locals, not assumption, based on the photo, and even said, I don’t know where that location is. Often here, one location serves several organizations. A Campaign office might be in the same center as a ‘peace and justice’ organization.

And I would be cautious about assuming what “young oborgs” are aware of, and limit them to our experiences. I know what you mean and I experience the same thing with young Ron Paul supporters who overlap with Alex Jones peeps. They cannot handle that I will not accept their 9/11 theories, though I can rattle them off verbatim to them. I don’t put my feet on sand and call it stable.

But…where do we disagree now? as you basically still agree with me, i think….could be wrong.

You know, I clicked on some of those right wing websites just to see their take on this and am reminded exactly why Susan posted this. No democratic nominee is safe from those bastards. None. Every one will write and say odious things about whoever the democratic candidate is and that is just the way it is. So, to all of you who are supporting Obama because you think he is more electable you should have your heads examined. He is going to get the same treatment that Hillary will get. The question is: How will he deal with it? and how will he overcome the right wing smear campaign? These are fair questions that everyone should be asking themselves. If you want to support Obama because you like his message or you like his flip-flopping, or you like his unwarranted arrogance then fine. That is great, more power to you. If you like him because you think the right wingers won’t attack him as much then you need to get a grip. The moral of the story that so many seem to have missed is that EVERY voter should vote for the candidate they like the best and not who the rightwingers find least offensive. For me personally since I am a hard core partisan liberal I have to have the candidate that undoubtedly will stand up for the principles that I adore. That is why I am not voting for Obama. How many times is he going to say that he is not a liberal? How many ways? I want someone who is going to draw a line in the sand and not negotiate with those whack jobs on the conservative side. By stating that he isn’t a liberal Obama has already capitulated. He has already said to the conservatives that you are right and I am wrong. Nothing is more infuriating for me than having a candidate from either party who won’t stand up for the parties agenda or their own ideals. Republicans never have this problem, ever. They always state very clearly that they are conservatives and they dare anyone to attack them on it. Of course no one ever does. Why? Because they are convinced they are right.

I am amazed at the number of people commenting on Che Guevarra who wouldn’t be able to tell him from Tom Mix. First Che was an Argentine National who helped Castro bring the wonders of Marxism to Cuba. He was responsible for the torture and execution of political prisoners. After getting bored with that, he moved to the Congo with Cuban volunteers and attempted to overthrow that government. When that venture turned into a complete flop, he turned his attention to Bolivia. He managed to get himself captured after getting lost in the mountain jungle there and was killed probably by the Bolivians. Except for Cuba, everything else he tried was a complete flop. Thus he gets his face on flags, posters and T-shirts. The untra-chic extreme left equivilent of George Bush achieving sainthood. One thing people have trouble learning is that just because someone opposes something bad, that doesn’t automatically make them good. Change doesn’t have to be an improvement.
