Valerie Plame Wilson – Wide Open Thread

UPDATE: If you have a Daily Kos account, please recommend this diary: “Forget the Flowers – Send Hillary Some Love Today.” (Alegre’s wonderful diary is hanging in there at the bottom of the recommended list — let’s help her move it up!) (There’s an ADDITIONAL UPDATE below the fold.)

ORIGINAL: News from Hollywood, via Huffington Post:

Nicole Kidman Outed As Valerie Plame

Nearly a year after Warner Brothers announced their intention to make a biopic of outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, the identity of the actress who will play her has finally been leaked to the media – and you can only find it on MTV News. …

No word when filming would begin as Kidman is pregnant.

Read blogs by Valerie Plame on Huffington Post.

SECOND UPDATE: “NBC’s Mike Viqueira reported Republicans were outraged, and Democrats were affronted. Democrats put forward a resolution holding White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers in contempt of Congress. And in the middle of the Statuary Hall service for the late Tom Lantos, a Republican went to the floor — just steps from the solemn proceedings — and called a procedural vote, apparently out of pique. — MSNBC First Read

What else is going on?

  • S. Markom

Who is going to play her husband? Michael Douglas would be a fit.

  • g8grl

Russell Crow of course. Two Aussies, ironic or fitting? You decide.

  • mlr701

    Not dapper enough.

I vote for Trevor Eve , if he can do an American accent and maybe change his hair color a bit.

  • http://papertigertail.blogspot.com Other Lisa

Hmmm…Russell Crowe might work. Nicole Kidman works…I like it!

  • Fred C. Dobbs

That’d work. Michael Douglas doesn’t usually connote characters with the kind of cojones AMB Wilson has displayed.

Run a few pounds off Tom Berenger and he could handle it convincingly. H Ford would just be trite in the role.

  • TeakWoodKite

    William Macy for Joe Wilson.

  • Fred C. Dobbs

Macy had a great line in, “Sportsnight,” where he informs “Dana,” (Felicity Huffman) that he’s been, “Fired, audited, indicted…You wanna hurt me, bring Kryptonite!”

I was thinking of AMB Wilson screwing with Saddam Hussein with the rope when I saw that episode.

  • Donovan Fraser

I vote for Jack Nicholson or Pachino or DeNiro.

  • S. Markom

Douglas has the same hairstyle as Wilson.

  • S. Markom

    Nicholson: too dumb
    Pacino: too short
    DeNiro: too quiet

  • S. Markom

Now who is going to play Dick Cheney?

I would suggest Danny DeVito (The Penguin).

  • nellieh

I believe it was at the ‘Firedoglake’ blog, around the time of the trial where there were suggestions if a movie was made who would play which character. I don’t recall Kidman cast as Valerie. I don’t doubt she could do it. It would be interesting to see all those suggestions again and how they stack up against the real casting.

  • Thinker

    She is the perfect choice.

Kidman is an “Australian Ambassador” and Howard poodle, but I am sure she will crow for Rudd as well [anything for stardom]. She makes a point of misrepresenting issues. I wonder how Plame will be portrayed. Will it be good news for you and Larry? That’s the question.

  • TeakWoodKite

I’ll put “Sportsnight” on the list.

He is a an actor with a wide range of expression and …I was thinking of temperment and facial expresions. And who could say the “frog marched out of the white house” line…William Macy’s face appeared.

“You wanna hurt me, bring Kryptonite” most certianly describes Ambassador Wilson.
“Truth to power” is the strongest Kung Fu.

  • Mr.Murder

Steve Clemons as an extra in the movie!

    last line in the credits:
    Scotty McCellan as “DEEP THROAT”

  • Lorelynn

Richard Dreyfuss is Cheney’s double. It’s a little scary.

    Open thread?

Jesse Jackson Jr is at it again:

One black supporter of Clinton, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, said he remains committed to her. “There’s nothing going on right now that would cause me to” change, he said…

…In an interview, Cleaver offered a glimpse of private conversations.

He said Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois had recently asked him “if it comes down to the last day and you’re the only superdelegate? … Do you want to go down in history as the one to prevent a black from winning the White House?

“I told him I’d think about it,” Cleaver concluded.

Jackson, an Obama supporter, confirmed the conversation, and said the dilemma may pose a career risk for some black politicians. “Many of these guys have offered their support to Mrs. Clinton, but Obama has won their districts. So you wake up without the carpet under your feet. You might find some young primary challenger placing you in a difficult position” in the future, he added.

    (from MYDD).

    All three are too ugly.

I’ve met Joe Wilson and he is one handsome man.

  • Bill Keyes

    A couple of points…..

My wife said she heard on NPR recently that Valerie’s book was a “bomb” Any truth to that?

Also and this should probably be directed to Larry and that is what he thinks, if he has read it, the book by Tim Weiner called Legacy of Ashes about the history of the CIA.

A good Republican friend of mine who was a executive for Sprint who also has an opinion on the telecom immunity but that is another story, read it and now has a dim view of some of the black ops stuff the CIA supposedly did in years gone by.

    Not taking sides just curious.

  • Mr.Murder

Valerie could be Nicole’s stunt woman. She’s overqualified for any physical challenge.

  • Mr.Murder

In other news, ‘Dumb Blonde Stereotype’ shot all to hell by Valerie, at Company firing range.

  • Mr.Murder

Reservoir Dog Michael “Mr.Blonde” Madsen for the role of Ms.Blonde’s husband.

  • Waiting in Texas

I personally think Greta Sacchi or Virginia Madsen would make a better Valerie Plame.

So, slightly OT here, but I was wondering about something concerning this whole telecom immunity deal. Is there some sort of nasty backstory concerning the telecoms and the Bush WH? It just seems that the WH is in a real pickle and it has nothing to do with terrorism or lawsuits. The WH is absolutely desperate to give the telecoms immunity, but its not for the reasons that they are saying on tv.

How patriotic of the telecoms. I bet they were duped just like the rest of us. Anyone know of anything?

    Candidates’ Earmarks Worth Millions
    Of Front-Runners, McCain Abstained

    By Paul Kane
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Thursday, February 14, 2008; Page A01

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton helped secure more than $340 million worth of home-state projects in last year’s spending bills, placing her among the top 10 Senate recipients of what are commonly known as earmarks, according to a new study by a nonpartisan budget watchdog group.

Working with her New York colleagues in nearly every case, Clinton supported almost four times as much spending on earmarked projects as her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.), whose $91 million total placed him in the bottom quarter of senators who seek earmarks, the study showed.

  • CK

What is the issue with earmarks? The money is in the budget already, it is going to be spent in various districts already. Earmarking is just saying this budgeted money goes for this specific project.
The pie is there, it has already been sliced, earmarking is a way of saying which crumbs get which crumbs.

  • Bill Keyes

Just trying to see that if the earmarks become a campaign issue how the Hillary lovers on this site can spin the facts to make Obama look bad.

  • CK

If the facts are against you argue the law.
If the law is against you argue the facts.
If the law and the facts are against you, hammer the table with your shoe and scream a lot.
Sorta the same way the Obama supporters use every twitch to make the Clinton’s look bad.
Bill have you ever been to a bullfight? Politics is the American equivalent but with a slight difference in that both candidates think they are the matadors and all the spectators know that both candidates are used bull food. In the end the spectators get to award one brass ring to the least noxious pile.

An “interesting” article, where, like MSNBC tried to say about VPW (that her employment info was on the internet for anyone to see), Newsweek’s Michael Hirsch seems to think that secrets are simply pouring out through public sector and public domain sources. Nah, couldn’t be that neocons sold them, right?

  • Sometime-CIA-Defender

Speaking of Ms. Plame-Wilson, she was interviewed regarding Sybil Edmonds recently. From BradBlog:

    http://www.bradblog.com/?p=5685#more-5685

Former CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson says the recent disclosures in the UK’s Sunday Times concerning the sale of U.S. nuclear secrets to the foreign black market, as aided by high-ranking government officials, are “stunning.”

    Bill Keyes:
    Valerie’s book was a “bomb”?

If you have not read it I would recommend it, if only to become aware of the level of vindictive redaction her book was subjected to, which is stunning. Some of the redactions you can reconstruct due to the way Valerie Wilson writes. For example the word ‘and’ was redacted. What Valerie is “allowed” to write gives the reader a worth while insight to her experience.
