The first speech…the first diss

Well…’ol Barry made his first major speech to a joint session of congress Tuesday night and wether he knows it or not in the first minute of the thing he stuck his foot in his mouth. To be honest my jaw dropped to the ground.

This is how he started the address to the Joint Session of Congress: “Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, and the First Lady of the United States…..”

Now, boys and girls, let’s play the game: “What is missing from this picture?” I have been around a while. I have seen my share of presidential speeches. I’m sure you have too. So what is missing? How about mentioning the members of the cabinet, the Justices of the Supreme Court, the members of the Joint Chiefs and … wait for it … you and me. Don’t believe me? Think I was imagining it? Well here is the text of the speech right from the White House website. To be honest I was not sure I heard it right live and then when I printed out the text of the speech prior to The Warrior’s post speech show last night I was shocked at the error.

I still was not sure I had found something till our own Larry Johnson said I was on to something when he came on the show. The opening should have been:

Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, Members of the Cabinet, Justices of the Supreme Court, Members of the Joint Chiefs, First Lady of the United States (if he really had to acknowledge her), my fellow Americans.

So the question is, is Barry or the person or people who wrote the speech that stupid or are they that arrogant? Me I lean to the later than the former but I will let you the NQ Audience decide.

Oh and before I go a quick plug for my weekly NQ radio show “No Topic Taboo…Everything Else with Jay” every Wednesday night at 9PM Eastern. Join me every Wednesday to talk about topics like this or anything else on your mind.

  • so saddened

    they are both that stupid and that arrogant.

  • Greyledge Gal

    Um – I have a copy of Roberts’ Rules of Order which I could lend Obummer but I doubt he would bother to read it or follow the procedures for proper protocol.

    Sometimes a Parliamentarian can be your best friend . . .

  • JohnnyB

    The Hillary cardboard groper (speeh writer for the Pres) is responsible for this. Our Pres. only reads what appears on his two televisions (teleprompters). I’m sure he read the speech more than once before appearing, and changed a few phrases here and there.

    The bottom line, WE (you and me) better hope that these policy statements and the hyper-cash turn our economy around before it crashes beyond repair.
    Let’s all try to assist our government when possible.
    It’s in our best interest, along with the rest of the world’s population.

  • James

    Not a big deal really.

  • Greyledge Gal

    Oh – by the way – note how Obambi has phased out “Hail to the Chief”. I thought there was always a military band on hand at the State of the Union (if that is what this was ??) which played this theme when the President came down the center aisle and ascended the dais.

    Also, PBO wasn’t supposed to speak until after Nanny-poo introduced him so he muffed that as well.

    Then there was the big faux pas on Americans inventing the automobile – Angela Merkel will be after Barracky now. :-)

  • chris from Chicago

    It’s just plain rude!
    He has no class, and no finesse whatsoever.
    I personally do not like Biden but he never fails to belittle Biden and make him look like an ass…
    in front of the whole country…that is so disrespectful…
    and it reflects so badly on him.
    This guy’s ego is so inflated that he thinks that he can do no wrong…on any level…
    he believes his own press…
    this country has no idea the monster they have created!

  • http://deleted Buzz Latte LaRue

    Perhaps the swiss cheese brain that can result from drug abuse kicked in or perhaps the teleprompter was running too fast.

    This sounds like another Obamian brain glitch like the oath of office. A least Bush’s glitches were funny. Obama’s are insulting. Bush was his own worst enemy, Obama is embarrassing to the nation.

    Obama is so lacking it is pathetic and therefore a very big deal.

  • Greyledge Gal

    Sorry, but I do think this is a big deal. There are proper procedural rules of protocol to cover just about every meeting and event situation.

    If you don’t think it is a big deal, just hope that protocol is not flubbed when one of the leaders/rulers of any of the Asian countries or any country with royalty visits the U.S. If it is, it will be considered a slap in the face and could stir up at least a minor, if not worse, international incident.

    Without protocol to hold things together, many meetings and events would devolve into chaos. Rules cover everything from speaking order, to order of placement in receiving lines, to proper forms of address for dignataries, to seating placement at state dinners, and the list goes on and on.

  • JustMe

    he embarrasses me it’s like he’s playing one of the boys on the football field… it makes me cringe how he acts in front of the whole world how does anyone take him serious?
    He has no class, and no finesse whatsoever.
    Exactly!

  • Jay L

    If memory serves no band for the State of the Union or any other speech inside the House chamber.

  • jwrjr

    Yes, Obomba is that arrogant (“I won”).

  • Jay L

    This was not a fast prompter. Check the text of the speech. It was not even in.

  • Ani

    You are right about the protocol issue — it is also a matter of respect and the Justices, the Cabinet and certainly Congress are entitled to respect and are entitled to be mentioned alongside, if not before, the first lady.

    Certainly the Ameriacn people should also be acknowledged.

    You are spot on about international incidents too — these protocol issues are extremely important to visiting dignitaries and heads of state — the way he addresses the press corps with a “hi guys,” and “thanks, guys” would not cut it with them. Frankly it does not cut it for him to address the press corps this way either. Certainly, formalities are in place for a reason — this is all seen throughout the world.

  • Seattle Moss

    Obama later talked about the people that sent them there..I’m sure he was only talking about the drones that drank the koolaid.
    Couldn’t be me, I’m part of that old economy which is not government owned.
    Nice talking to you tonight Jay!

  • lark

    Not a very big deal to you James, but it is a big deal to those that were dissed. They were humiliated by it. Obama raised his wife up and humiliated those who defend our rights with their lives.

  • JustMe

    So true!

    But the people who voted him in I guess act like this on a daily basis…. no respect for anyone even themselves.

  • leslie

    in fact it is a big deal. This is the government we are talking about here, not some boys’ club or high school clique that disses others on a whim.
    Our gov’t officials are supposed to be adults. And as such are to respect protocol. Because without protocol, things rapidly decompensate. When things at the highest level of government are in decline, and certain rules are not followed, we lose face with the rest of the world. We cannot afford to lose any more face than was lost during the last 8 years.
    Being “cool” isokay when you are the high school cheerleader, but it doesn’t mean much when you are representing the nation as its leader.

  • felizarte

    The arrogance of one who thinks no one can possibly be smarter than he to notice his booboos.

  • http://deleted Buzz Latte LaRue

    The text as written or the speech as transcribed? Either Obama left it out or his lackluster speechwriter left it out.

    Either way, it was an embarrassing moment for America.

  • indiedogg

    Mind if I throw something onto this string that has been bugging the hell out of me about the dialogue and ideologue surrounding the question (now back in the news via Governor Sanford): “Do I want Barack H. Obama to fail or succeed as President?”

    Somehow I’ve felt that the conversation has been using the wrong basis or was based on the wrong foundation or shifting sand or something. Usually the subconscious will bring these things back to you if you send it off to fetch like a good doggie.

    Here’s a suggestion for your consideration:

    It’s the wrong question.

    In fact it’s not an appropriate question at all because it places the person answering it in an untenable position before they open their mouth (unless you’re Rush, in which case you just plow ahead as is his predilection, bless his heart). Who really wants to say they want their President to fail? In my view, that’s not a valid or even meaningful test. Certainly close to a “trick” question.

    And even if the question is asked, any savy politician (or any careful person, think intelligence services if you will) knows, it’s not the question that matters, it’s your answer. A question can never get you in trouble. Only your answer.

    So, you answer the question that was not asked instead of the one that was.

    The consensus is, for example, that Bobby Jindal crashed and burned in his “official” response last night. Probably accurate. Not a shining moment.

    But, on the Today show today, he did exactly what I’m talking about and he did it seamlessly. I was impressed, not only by how he handled himself but by how he framed the debate on his own terms.

    Okay, okay, I’ll get to the point.

    I will not answer the question, “Do you or do you not want the President to fail?” That question is asinine and of no relevance to any serious debate about the future of this nation.

    If asked that question, I would answer it like this:

    “I want very much for my nation to succeed, regardless of who gets the credit, and I do not want my nation to fail, regardless of who bears the blame.”

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    Yes, I thought the final acknowledgment following the dignitaries was “My fellow Americans”. He’s such an amateur. I hope he and MEchille are given some classes in protocol and manners in general before they show the rest of the world what classless rubes they are.

    Does anybody bother to look around before they make shit up? Yeah you’ve been around a while, but if you bother to use the Google and take a look at transcripts of other Presidents speeches to Joint Sessions, you’d see you are wrong about the typical opening statements. Where’d you get this notion from? Bobby Jindal?Please issue a correction.

    From CSPAN:

    STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS OF THE PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH TO THE JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS

    January 29, 2002

    THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much. Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, members of Congress, distinguished guests, fellow citizens:

    PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON’S ADDRESS BEFORE A JOINT SESSION OF THE CONGRESS ON THE STATE OF THE UNION

    February 4, 1997

    Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of the 105th Congress, distinguished guests, and my fellow Americans.

    PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH’S ADDRESS BEFORE A JOINT SESSION OF THE CONGRESS ON THE STATE OF THE UNION

    January 28, 1992

    Mr. Speaker and Mr. President, distinguished Members of Congress, honored guests, and fellow citizens:

    Remarks of President Barack Obama – As Prepared for Delivery

    Address to Joint Session of Congress

    Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

    Madame Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, and the First Lady of the United States:
    I’ve come here tonight not only to address the distinguished men and women in this great chamber, but to speak frankly and directly to the men and women who sent us here.

    Looks to me like Obama has followed protocol on this one too, just like he has on all the other official functions.

  • NMK

    Gee, I mean get with it all of you. This is 2009, and we have hopey changey as in none of those old-fashioned protocol thingys.

    I wonder if Jon gropeyhopeychangey Favreau, age 28, head of speech writing, wrote the speech. Oh cool.

  • Patrick Henry

    My Fear is that it is because neither the Supreme Court Justices nor the Joint Chiefs matter that much to The new Chancellor..either he was willfully signalling his disrespect..(Hey Jeremiah Wright did you see this) and blaming it on staff error..(which I doubt) or he is not the Perfect WUNDERKIND we saw on His Cardboard Posters..

    There has never been a Gamer in Town like this One.

  • Karma

    This is definitely stupid.

    It ignores one of the three branches of govt, the defense of our nation, and one of Obama’s titles. Commander in Chief. It doesn’t get much worse than that.

    Personally, I like seeing the Justices’ acknowledge the President’s welcome. It is always an interesting tv shot to see them all seated there.

    As an army brat, I enjoy seeing the Joint Chiefs in their uniforms with all of their ribbons on their chest.

    And ‘my fellow Americans’….that reminds me of every presidential speech I’ve heard. More importantly, it addresses the other part of the republic…the voters.

    There is something about the phrase that brings the American people into the discussion…and into that room. Where normally we can only watch on CSPAN. We are now invited into the discussion with the presidential speech because he has important information to share with us.

    I am not sure about anyone else, but ‘my fellow Americans’ is like a starting gun. You heard those words from the other room. The speech has begun….and you know to get back to the tv quickly. ;)

  • Karma

    Hmmm…looks to me everyone else gave a hat tip to the citizens…but Obama.

  • Karma

    To clarify…

    We aren’t addressed in the same context in Obama’s….he is talking to us.

    Rather than on the same level as the other branches mentioned.

  • http://deleted Buzz Latte LaRue

    I was just thinking the same thing. How pathetic. The “prez” and faux lady need lessons in maturity, refinement, manners, and protocol.

  • http://deleted Buzz Latte LaRue

    At least Obama hasn’t started flashing the peace sign, yet. Perhaps he’ll roll that one out when his approval rating tanks into the low forties.

    At the rate he’s going that will be around the first of April.

  • andrew191

    It’s not a lack of class, or ignorance of protocol, it is quite simply his subtle way of showing contempt for America in general. Just another middle finger cheek scratch. Only this time it’s not directed at individuals like HRC or McCain, it’s directed at a whole country that he can’t possibly respect because he knows it was so incredibly stupid to elect him in the first place. Narcissists love devotion, but truly care little for those that worship them, Narcissists know that their devotees are nitwits.

  • http://AmericasFavoriteTerrorist.com Gerard McNedich

    ha ha…

    this is sort of a non-story…

    more interesting was Clinton’s comment a few days ago about Dear Leader needing less fear-mongering and more hope…

    that was hilarious…

  • TeakwoodKite

    Another day another 600 billion for the budget.

    We are just a foot note…not even a line item to veto.

    And watching 360, Cooper made mention that he is hearing the WH is more conserned with Energy and Health care.

    Gergen shook his head.

    Did you hear the crowd when BO said “private accounts for Social Security”? It was one of those Sprint fiber optic moments, where you could hear a pin drop.

    I thought the dem’s were ‘gainst it?

  • andrew191

    Frankly, what sounded most weird was his nod to the first lady, it just seemed awkward and strained. But it makes sense in a way. She stated some time back that he hadn’t done anything yet that should qualify him to be President. Well,…duh! She had his number then, and she still does. I’ve been getting the impression that she has doubts about his ability to be an effective leader of the now dissolving free world, and is somewhat worried that she will be married to the totally incompetent man that history will prove to be the biggest dissaster for mankind since Hitler. That would explain the public ass-kissing he gave her.

  • helenk

    This guy did not know how many states in the USA. Where the Great Lakes were when he lived on one. How could anyone expect him to learn protocol. He has only had part time jobs in government. He does know where the present button is.
    He does not know that taking money to buy a mansion from a landlord that provided no heat in an apartment house that was rehabed with federal money in a Chicago winter is wrong.
    He has his part time job now with perks like a plane to play with and an another house that other people pay for.
    If the country was not facing economic problems and fighting two wars he would be a sick joke as it is he is the wrong person at the wrong time. The country will suffer.

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    Indeed, he is arrogant and it is simply painful to realize that we have a man in the WH who pays homage to rapper thugs and has his crude game of publicly giving the finger to opponents. That’s the mentality and action of a 13 year old.

    It’s beyond crude. It is a reflection of the generation that voted for him. For the most part, they’re uncouth and crass and ignorant of how they appear to others. It’s a collection of small things of which I believe he is unschooled and unconscious. Is he now saluting military who are greeting him or still shaking their hand? These things were not in the limelight with candidate BHO. And this goes along with the Leftist Democrats of the 60′s who threw out the good manners and civility practiced by the previous generations.

    On the international stage, he’ll look as classy as his Kenyan cousin or any other 3rd rate African dictator.

  • sandi78

    His grasp of protocol is pitiful. He also seemed to forget that he is a guest in that chamber.

    The others all mentioned honored or distinguished guests as well as fellow citizens/Americans. Mentioning them at the beginning of his speech isn’t the same thing.

    His juvenile speechwriter needs to learn fast that protocol is very important. Who the heck is the White House protocol officer now? Do they even have one?

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    Perhaps he’ll imitate Nixon and give the peace sign with both hands.

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    No one includes a special mention of the first lady. She’s just one of the “distinguished guests” or “fellow citizens”. Take your pick.

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    Does anybody bother to look around before they make shit up? Yeah you’ve been around a while, but if you bother to use the Google and take a look at transcripts of other Presidents speeches to Joint Sessions, you’d see you are wrong about the typical opening statements. Where’d you get this notion from? Bobby Jindal?Please issue a correction.

    Thanks for emphasizing my point. What you needed to Google, others, having heard many Presidential speeches, instantly recognized that it was off. What we were pointing out was his inclusion of the first lady and ignoring his employers (us). Maybe you skipped over that in your haste to make your boy right.

  • andrew191

    I’ve stated over and over again that he doesn’t know this country well, and what he does know is a gross distortion of the country that most of us love. The moment I hear the first few notes of the “Star Spangled Banner”, my right hand reflexively covers my heart. I’m sure most of us have seen the incident where Obama’s hands cover his crotch while all others on the stage showed their love and respect for the U.S. by holding hands to hearts during our anthem.

    Please educate yourselves on the concept of solipsism, Obama views this world as his creation and toy, we’re all just his projections.

    His only discernable attribute is that he can deliver a good, but substantially shallow speech, written by others, but that simply makes me view him as a one trick phoney.

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    Well, I always thought there was a protocol officer. He doesn’t even practice the first rule of manners though…that of thinking of the comfort of the other person first. My grandsons know to honor the matriarch of our family before anyone else, helping her with her chair at table, making sure she has everything she needs. Somehow, since he doesn’t do this for his wife, I can’t quite picture him honoring her mother. His failing is his arrogance and ego.

    I would know proper table manners, which fork, etc., but if I were suddenly elevated to the WH, I’d ask for help with the fine points of protocol. Most would.

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    We are perfectly aware that this is no big deal to you, James.

    Oh, why bother.

  • http://firefox AnnieCollier

    Yes, first Bush tries to rub her shoulders (didn’t you cringe when you saw that?) and then BHO gets history wrong in a speech watched all over the world.

  • alibe

    Have you ever thought how similar Obama and the Octomom are? They both are delusional. They both are supreme narcicists. They both think by saying something it then becomes a reality. They both have bamboozled the public. They speak in strange syntax. There is no there there for both. They have similar thin resumes. They both think they are the center of the universe. They both expect the public to support their grandiose life style. They may both be intelligent, but they could fool me. They both have fooled people into supporting their grandiose schemes.

  • Ellen

    Please give a link that shows they were humiliated or even cared….I’d like to see where you got your information.

  • cynic

    Yep. I was so shocked by the omission that I went into a cataleptic state and heard nothing after that point, only coming out of my trance 55 minutes later. I’m told he had 52.4 million television viewers, who were probably also rendered cataleptic. Only those actually present miraculously avoided catalepsy, interrupting the speech with spontaneous applause on 65 occasions.

  • andrew191

    It was a classic show of arrogance when the most exalted one almost crushed Pelosi’s much anticipated and customary introduction. Poor Nancy, how long will it take her to realize that once he has had his way with her, he won’t respect her in the morning. Joe B. is showing signs of his displeasure at being the victim of a “one nighter”.

    I guess since I never fell for Obama’s one liners, shunned his advances, and immediatly spotted him as a political Lothario, that as a citizen now screwed by him, I can legitimately claim that I’ve been raped. But I’m too ashamed to report it. I guess it’s really my fault for wearing the seductive and revealing garb of capitalistic virtue. I was asking for it!

  • JozefAL

    That’s funny, my first reaction to the opening notes of “The Star-Spangled Banner” is “NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!”, quickly followed by the strong desire to puncture my eardrums so I’m not inflicted with that torture.

  • JozefAL

    Obama’s ALWAYS supported privatizing Social Security. (Well, since 2005 anyway.) He was one of the very few Democrats who spoke very openly of being willing to listen to and work with the Bush Administration and its privatization plans. Of course, most progressive blogs were absolutely aghast at Obama’s willingness to talk favorably on privatizing Social Security but that horror evaporated after Obama announced his run for the White House.

  • andrew191

    Gerard, first I’ll extend my condolences to you for having parents so cruel that would give you such a name. Then I have to ask just what the hell you’re trying to explain with your post. It makes no sense.

  • SayWhat

    Larry your sexism is showing. “First Lady of the United States (if he really had to acknowledge her”.

    Why souldn’t he ackowledge the first lady. She i important too!!

    Afetr mentioning the first lady and then the American people.

  • andrew191

    JozefAL, Cuba is only 90 miles off the coast of Florida, why don’t you grab one of the rafts that bring Cubans seeking freedom to our shores, and paddle your way to a brutal dictatorship that has a national anthem more to your liking?

  • andrew191

    SayWhat, drink much?

  • andrew191

    Here’s a better thought JozefAL, you obviously have enough contempt and disgust for this country to run for President on the Democrat ticket. No resume, experience, or accomplishments are necessary if you can read from a teleprompter in an entertaining fashion. Good luck! I doubt you could be worse than what we have now.

    If Obama deliberately snubbed the military and the justices, then I would guess that he is playing games AGAIN with some of his global type admirers. He would have to be totally, completely, and utterly stupid to think he could remain in his figurehead presidency while disregarding the military and the rule of law. It doesn’t take much imagination to figure out why. You don’t have to be a warmonger to give the military its due respect. Look at Hillary and the respect she gives and has managed to receive from many highranking members of the military.

  • QUEENIE

    ahhh sorry James..it is a damn big deal..he works for the American people..we pay his salary!..WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE HIS BOSS..and I have never heard a president not acknowledge the American people..maybe it is no damn big deal to you, but he gets a big chunk of change from me, and I damn well want that to be acknowledged!..If he doesn’t think it is a big deal , and you don’t think we are a big deal, is a serious concern to me,My democracy and constitution are in peril because ignorance is part of the Obama mantra and that of his blind followers. It is a damn big deal to me.

    I have lived under 9 presidents, I do not remember any of them ignoring the American people in the State of the Union address.

    The fact that you don’t think it is a big deal AND OBAMA thinks so little about the American people, tells me all I need to know about You and Obama, And the real State of our Union..it is in big,big trouble with the likes of you both!

  • Tess

    Addressing The First Lady in that forum, in that speech, was a gaffe, whether premeditated or otherwise.
    He just does’t seem to know how to act classy, even with protocol there to help. It reminds me of the absolutely ignorant asinine insistence on shaking hands with a Marine on guard duty.
    He doesn’t get the big issues, he doesn’t get the protocols. He delivers a good speech. And…

  • QUEENIE

    Oh and let me add James..it is the likes of people like you, who care so little about Protocol, that for the past year called me, more times than I like to admit (and in this day and age) the “C” word and a Racist.

    First, I have not heard that word used since the 60′s, I thought the word was retired..silly me..I was awakened to the fact that stupid people still exist in this country,by the ingnorance and childish stupidity of the Obots.. and second I am married to a dual minority and have a son that is a dual minority, and have worked for minority rights since I was a very young woman.

    Personally, if you don’t want to be acknowledged as the rightful owner of our government..stuff it….and may I suggest a different country for you???
    Like one that does not put the ownership in the hands of “WE THE PEOPLE”.

    But since I pay the bills of this government and the salaries of those who have the privledge of working for me,and serving me , I expect them to acknowledge that I am a rightful owner of this nation, along with 350 + or – million other citizens of this nation, not just those who we employ to work in a temporary basis, for our government.

  • QUEENIE

    Havoc..yes many of us were appalled at what Bush did to the German Chancellor!!!! and most real dems were aghast and said so..Every dem I know did speak out ( oh and i know alot of dems , since I live in two states and was an elected democrat in my home state..do a bit of research, will you please!!!!!!!!! Before you make a bigger fool of yourself and show how truely ignorant you are, and lacking of any facts of the last 30 years of this nations history!

    Go read a history book before you come here and play your childish games!

    Grownups post here..this is not your high school web page!

  • QUEENIE

    JozefAL…

    you don’t deserve that National anthem..you prove it with your comments.

    People have died for what that national anthem stands for , for your very freedom to despise it. People died for your right to post here and anywhere how disgusted you are of our national anthem..but that does not mean you deserve the National Anthem..and the blood laid down by those before you to have those rights!

    You are just damn lucky to have those rights but be careful, your messiah seems to hate your rights and those of his employers..we the people!

    The issue is more the ommission of My Fellow Americans…and the decision not to acknowledge the Supreme Court Justices and Cabinet members, but including the First Lady at the same time.

    These addresses are worked on for weeks. Every word and phrase are poured over. There are no accidents, no slips in protocol. The wording is as deliberate as can be.

    It was a different choice to say the least.

  • Animal Control

    Yes, it was arrogant and stupid. Some may not agree but didn’t Lyndon Johnson just say “My fellow Americans” it’s inclusive of all the people in the fewest words and even includes those immigrants waiting for their turn to become Americans.

  • Palm Tree

    I looked through several first joint session of Congress speeches by former presidents:

    Clinton 1993 – “Mr. President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the House and the Senate, distinguished Americans here as visitors in this Chamber, as am I. It is nice to have a fresh excuse for giving a long speech.”

    Bush I 1991 – “Mr. President. And Mr. Speaker, thank you, sir, for those very generous words spoken from the heart about the wonderful performance of our military.

    and…

    Bush I State of the Union 1991 – “Mr. President and Mr. Speaker and Members of the United States Congress”

    After perusing many of these speeches – including State of the Union Speeches – I see nothing here worth mentioning.

  • tango

    Yes, instead of specifically including the military, the Supreme Justices, other distinguished guests, members of his cabinet or American citizens, he chose to single his wife out. What a diss to the other groups.

    American citizens might not care (or notice) but I bet there were DC insiders talking about it afterwards. He didn’t even welcome the American viewers!!! What a putz.

  • Gary McGowan

    The article to which we are commenting begins, “Well…’ol Barry made his first major speech…”

    The article ends with, “before I go a quick plug for my weekly NQ radio show…”

    It seems to me the question we should ask ourselves is, “Are we each making our best effort in these very challenging times?”

    Just my two cents.

  • oowawa

    Excellent comment, Karma. This about sums it up.

  • oowawa

    You forgot about the secret “O” hand signal! (And I’m not referring to the middle finger face scratch.)

  • Animal Control

    Or he may have taken his eyes off the teleprompter for a second.

  • TeakwoodKite

    NOC, 16 words.

    Dropping out of High School is not patriotic, according to BO.

    stinky’s response to Bill: “Say wha?!”

  • CG

    The omission of “My Fellow Americans” was deliberate. We are but mere annoyances to Obama, not worthy of recognition. And we too will be freezing to death in our slum homes soon, just as Obama’s Chicago constituents in Rezco housing froze; you know we are already up under the bus. Who is Obama going to turn to next, to advance his career since his fellow Americans are passe?

  • http://www.sonicninjakitty.wordpress.com Sonic Ninja Kitty

    Wow–you hit the nail squarely on the head with that comment!

    And btw, I LOVE the “Star Spangled Banner” and get crazy when anyone suggests we replace it with ‘something easier to sing’ but far less inspirational and poignant like “America the Beautiful”. I think if so many people fought and died for this country, the least we can do is try our best at singing such an amazing song every once in awhile!

  • Lyn

    WE usually get so used to the proper way to act for the pledge, the National Anthem ect in grade school and usually know how respond with out even thinking. Barky spent those first few years in Indonesia doing what ever the kids in that country learn to respect THEIR country.

  • elliewyatt

    “… to the men and women who sent us here.”

    He was not addressing or acknowleging the American people as a whole, but addressing the people who put his ass in the WH: ACORN, Obots, Gaza phone bankers, money bundlers (domestic and foreign), Chicago political criminals, media ass kissers.

    If you are an American who did not support or vote for him, you were not addressed.

  • Isabelle

    This is what I observed in the past month. I noted an egocentric, narcissistic man (BO) who has an insatiable need for media adulation, exposure, and a constant reaffirmation of their undying affection..

    BO has been a media darling for two plus (2+) years, thus, he cannot and will not surrender the TV face time. BO’s apparent, ONLY quality is his ability to READ mellifluously from a teleprompter: a prepared speech (composed by others). The myth re: HIS INTELLECTUAL acuity… is just that….an absurd fairy tale. His stuttering/stammering, when attempting to be improvisational, is now legend.

    Sooooooooo, here we are again: 2/24 = 1 prime time speech; 2/25 = two TV speeches; 2/26 = another AM TV speech. = 4 speeches in 3 days? All this deceitful, in-your-face schmoozing is an attempt to cunningly CON the American masses into blissful submission. These are deliberate, destructive, narcissistic speeches advocating, covertly, the demise of particular portions of the US Constitution; while promoting Marxism, Socialism, and Communistic ideologies.

    What is most stunning of all is the prevailing dementia that has impacted most of the media (TV, Radio, Print). The media majority (journalists) brazenly demonstrate their overt prejudice w/unapologetic ogling and drooling:…..while merrily spewing “hearts and flowers” dissertations as the US economy and stock markets continue to TANK. The culprit = O’s negativisms, doom/gloom, fear mongering radicalism and his ravenous need to be totally in control…..of every facet of our lives.

    Folks, with every haughty, self-important speech, our FREEDOMS continue to wane. We must attempt to control and/or stop the bleeding of the US Constitution or this living document will CEASE TO BREATH.

    BUT HEY, his voice is sooooooo honey-like; a soothing, therapeutic tone that, in actuality, is a planned, Communistic-type, destructive force deliberately formulated to destroy the very “soul” of this wonderful Country.

    So very many, many speeches. What is this new President doing??? He was elected to provide “hope and change” and all he is accomplishing is reciting multiple, “prepared” negativisms: speech, after speech, after speech: feeding his ego, thus, providing the American people with the only talent he has…….“hot air” and “US Constitutional destruction“!!!!!!

  • http://noquarterusa No-nonsense-Nancy

    To me he acts like a dictator more and more. Shunning the Military, the Supreme Court and his Cabinet. He acts like he is a one man show. Is this a another sign that we should be very worried and alerted?

  • James

    Why do you assume so much? I wasn’t an Obama supporter. I voted for Hillary Clinton in the primaries and did not vote for Obama in the general. I’m still not a fan of Obama, but nitpicking like this shows that you have developed an irrational hatred for the man that is not healthy.

    There are NO rules for this address. This is a special speech to Congress, the state of the union begins next year. He can say whatever he wants. That doesn’t mean he hates America.

  • Ellen D

    I think the line in which he gives the U.S. credit for inventing the automobile shows they are both stupid and arrogant.
    Anyone remember the Cold War when the Russians took credit for inventing everything? It became a joke. The U.S. may become a joke too if he keeps this up.

    Hillary’s going to have a lot of explaining to do.

  • lark

    that is not healthy

    James, if Obama is a pathological liar, and I am convinced he is, then, 1) pathological liar have the effect of building resentment in everyone; 2) what is not healthy is allowing a pathological liar to manifest without bringing all that are listening to his lies to a recon.

    Liars fall into these traps because they have to always be thinking in all directions to incorporate their lies in a way to convince people they are truths.

    This man needs treatment. Now as president it is impossible to treat him.

  • James

    “He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”

    — Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution

    The constitution says nothing about what the president must begin his speech with. So again, and attack me all you want and call me a bot (despite the fact that I voted for HRC), but this is not a big deal at all.

  • lark

    “private accounts for Social Security”

    It is the Obama code for getting Wall Street back up to 14 thousand. It means the success of his presidency. He will not back down from it.

  • lark

    You’all are applying the rule of forgiving The One who does not know what he is doing. Virtuous you are.

  • lark

    Yes.

  • FLDemFem

    Why would anyone think a man who voluntarily married Madonna had any taste? Or think he was any sort of arbiter regarding elegance?

  • cynic

    Nothing seems to drive Obama’s detractors up the wall quite so much as the obvious fact that the majority of the American people like him, and that he clearly enjoys having their approval.

  • beebop

    And yet his approvals are somehow not what they were ….

    He isn’t going to pull off what he vaguely indicated he might or could or would and then his stock will tumble. And we all know how attractive he isn’t when he’s petulent …. brushing off his shoulders like a hip hop artist.

  • lark

    So you admit all of it is for the populist effect. And you admit too that you think in those terms too. Likability and approval. What results of all of this in none of your concern. The fact that Panzner told Art Bell that Obama’s policies will crash the country and that Art Bell took note does not matter to you. Is all theater and you like the show because you like when the plot thickens. No?

    State of the Union Address (January 31, 2006)
    George W. Bush

    “Thank you all. Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, Members of Congress, members of the Supreme Court and diplomatic corps, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:”

    ~~~~
    State of the Union Address (January 25, 1994)
    Bill Clinton
    “Thank you very much. Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, Members of the 103d Congress, my fellow Americans:”
    ~~~~

    Address Before a Joint Session of Congress (February 09, 1989)
    George H. W. Bush

    “Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, and distinguished Members of the House and Senate, honored guests, and fellow citizens:”

    ~~~
    Reagan addressed the citizens, Carter addressed no one in the intro.
    Ford didn’t address the citizens but the distinguished guests were included.
    Nixon, Johnson did, and once Kennedy did (hmmm…maybe someone copied of off his test again…lol).
    Eisenhower and Truman did not address the citizens….though it was a different time and television was new.
    More often than not ‘distinguished guests’ and/or ‘fellow citizens’ are honored with the VP, the Speaker and Congress in the intro.
    As kids of the tv era the nightly news cuts away to the Justices with the intro. The CSPAN feed doesn’t cut to them but I have witnessed the Justices nod or smile back at the president’s welcome more than once. It is a tv shot I wait for every time. They always shows them in the beginning.
    TV editing may of given us the image…but the honor is there with ‘distinguished guests’.
  • cynic
    I’m just saying that I don’t necessarily consider people liking their president and the president enjoying their approval to be a dysfunctional relationship.
    We’ll see how democratic policies play out over time. I won’t judge them as failed until the evidence is in. Meanwhile, I don’t believe promoting an expectation of failure is good for the markets or good for the country.
  • lark
    In other words… you are proposing to give Obama a benefit of the doubt and to deal with problems when the problems show up, no?
    So Greenspan and Bush knew that these problems would occur but they made the same decisions you prefer us to make, that is to take care of the problems when they occur, like Greenspan did for the problems we are having now. You like that approach, no?
    In other other words, you are against Obama’s meme of responsibility, no? Pave the road to benefit Obama’s administration and when the next administration takes over, let them deal with those problems his administration creates, no?
    In other words, you feel proud to belong to the whatever generation, no?
  • Elizabeth
    Foreign perspective : I watch the Japanese news networks regularly for language practice and while none of the commentary on the speech itself was negative, that First Lady line was conspicuously cut out of all major broadcast translations.
    Which was a very good thing, too. Overseas producers might not have known it was supposed to be “fellow citizens” or “fellow Americans” but clearly did feel it to be highly inappopriate. They played the role of gatekeeper and kept it from wider dissemination this time. But trash the Office like that and it will catch up with you very quickly.
  • cynic
    The words I chose said what I meant. I suppose you’re free to read into them whatever you like, but those thoughts are your own, not mine.
  • lark
    Exactly. I can read you better than you can self-reflect about your own words. Whatever, no?
  • Jay L
    Well said Karma
  • James
    He’s a politician. What else is new?
    For a campaign of lies to be really work well you’ve got to keep track of them with a chart. I found this one before the election. Click on the small chart to enlarge it. http://mediamattersaction.org/swiftboating/
