For a campaign of lies to be really work well you've got to keep track of them with a chart. I found this one before the election. Click on the small chart to enlarge it. http://mediamattersaction.org/swiftboating/

The words I chose said what I meant. I suppose you're free to read into them whatever you like, but those thoughts are your own, not mine.

Foreign perspective : I watch the Japanese news networks regularly for language practice and while none of the commentary on the speech itself was negative, that First Lady line was conspicuously cut out of all major broadcast translations.

Which was a very good thing, too. Overseas producers might not have known it was supposed to be "fellow citizens" or "fellow Americans" but clearly did feel it to be highly inappopriate. They played the role of gatekeeper and kept it from wider dissemination this time. But trash the Office like that and it will catch up with you very quickly.

In other words... you are proposing to give Obama a benefit of the doubt and to deal with problems when the problems show up, no?

So Greenspan and Bush knew that these problems would occur but they made the same decisions you prefer us to make, that is to take care of the problems when they occur, like Greenspan did for the problems we are having now. You like that approach, no?

In other other words, you are against Obama's meme of responsibility, no? Pave the road to benefit Obama's administration and when the next administration takes over, let them deal with those problems his administration creates, no?

In other words, you feel proud to belong to the whatever generation, no?

I'm just saying that I don't necessarily consider people liking their president and the president enjoying their approval to be a dysfunctional relationship.

We'll see how democratic policies play out over time. I won't judge them as failed until the evidence is in. Meanwhile, I don't believe promoting an expectation of failure is good for the markets or good for the country.

State of the Union Address (January 31, 2006)
George W. Bush

"Thank you all. Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, Members of Congress, members of the Supreme Court and diplomatic corps, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:"

~~~~
State of the Union Address (January 25, 1994)
Bill Clinton
"Thank you very much. Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, Members of the 103d Congress, my fellow Americans:"
~~~~

Address Before a Joint Session of Congress (February 09, 1989)
George H. W. Bush

"Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, and distinguished Members of the House and Senate, honored guests, and fellow citizens:"

~~~
Reagan addressed the citizens, Carter addressed no one in the intro.
Ford didn't address the citizens but the distinguished guests were included.
Nixon, Johnson did, and once Kennedy did (hmmm...maybe someone copied of off his test again...lol).
Eisenhower and Truman did not address the citizens....though it was a different time and television was new.
More often than not 'distinguished guests' and/or 'fellow citizens' are honored with the VP, the Speaker and Congress in the intro.
As kids of the tv era the nightly news cuts away to the Justices with the intro. The CSPAN feed doesn't cut to them but I have witnessed the Justices nod or smile back at the president's welcome more than once. It is a tv shot I wait for every time. They always shows them in the beginning.
TV editing may of given us the image...but the honor is there with 'distinguished guests'.
So you admit all of it is for the populist effect. And you admit too that you think in those terms too. Likability and approval. What results of all of this in none of your concern. The fact that Panzner told Art Bell that Obama's policies will crash the country and that Art Bell took note does not matter to you. Is all theater and you like the show because you like when the plot thickens. No?
And yet his approvals are somehow not what they were ....
He isn't going to pull off what he vaguely indicated he might or could or would and then his stock will tumble. And we all know how attractive he isn't when he's petulent .... brushing off his shoulders like a hip hop artist.
Nothing seems to drive Obama's detractors up the wall quite so much as the obvious fact that the majority of the American people like him, and that he clearly enjoys having their approval.
Why would anyone think a man who voluntarily married Madonna had any taste? Or think he was any sort of arbiter regarding elegance?
