I've registered as an independent now. I was happy to be part of the party that had a lineage pointing to FDR and JFK but now it's the party of Pelosi/Reid/Dean. I want no part of it and I no longer want to be associated with it despite the fact that I hold mostly Democratic views.

It's also been nice to become a casual observer and not get so heated when hearing partisan politics.

I would have happily voted for Bloomberg. He is the type of person that I would like to see in the White House -- someone who is pragmatic, not too ideological and truly bipartisan. He is well respected by all segments of his electorate, including the African American community since he treats everyone with dignity.

If Obama turns out to be a not-so-good President, you might see him go for it next time. Unfortunately 4 years seems like an eternity right now.

Good call for Dead-eye Dick, Rum Raisin. He is definitely the Dick of Disaster. Ha! :-) Has anyone ever reminded you more of Mr. Potter? Dick's a creepy guy, if ever there was one. I always imagine that his grandchildren run away and hide when he visits.

I don't fit in.

But, I like it that way. I don't need to be categorized, and I like that I have a capacity for critical thinking. I've never felt the need to be part of a group; in fact, I have always rejected being part of a group--political party or otherwise.

I'm a contrary, independent cuss, and I think that's the way to be.

How can Tuckers argue that NYT finds the "facts" and then twists them in a liberal way? What's admirable about that?

Your post is too long to respond to all of it, but I would have to say that your beliefs on conservative holding minorities down by not being for Affirmative Action are interesting. I view it as just the opposite. I think Affirmative Action, and programs like it, extend divisiveness beyond it's normal shelf life.

I am a female with a degree in computer engineering. I graduated from a class that was probably 90% male. I worked very hard to obtain my degree and upheld myself to the highest standards as far as work ethic and grades. I taught Computer Science classes, did summer work programs in the industry, and amassed a pretty good resume by the time I graduated. Many, many companies contacted me my senior year for interviews and I had my choice of high paying jobs to choose from. What did my fellow classmates say? "Well, of course YOU have a job -- you're female. They HAVE to pick a certain amount of women." That was my first experience of the natural consequences of Affirmative Action -- even though I had done all the right things, I didn't get credit for it because of the perception of bias in my favor.

When my company had to downsize and I didn't lose my job, the men in my group all said similar things -- "Well of COURSE, YOU didn't lose your job, YOU'RE a woman."

This went on constantly, and I am convinced that it was because there was a feeling on the part of my coworkers that people in minority classes were being given priority. It sets people up for jealousy, envy, and divisiveness, rather than achieving the desired result.

I also saw a lot of divisiveness occcur in my workplace when certain minorities were allowed extra slack -- we had a young man who literally did almost no work for a year -- just didn't show up most days. When he was fired, he sued and was given compensation in the lawsuit. The reason the judgment came down in his favor? Our management continued to give him team bonusses, even though he didn't contribute to the team quota. That was viewed in our office as a consequence of affirmative action -- management too scared to act on the truth, and then when they do, they get punished.

Many of the feel good policies have darker unintended consequences. Sometimes the result of the policy is the exact opposite of what was hoped to be achieved.

I don't think Canada or Europe are socialist in the fashion that is most alarming. The type of socialism that IS alarming is the type where the government owns large portions of corporations, and then, with little or no experience in the industry, starts appointing teams or czars to direct the companies. The type that IS alarming to me are the type that decide that anyone who doesn't agree with them is a racist, homophobic, hatemonger who needs silencing through legislative action.

An example of scary socialism is the auto industry, which is now going to be directed by a group of folks who haven't worked in automotive, or manufacturing, or engineering, or any of the other complexities of running a business. These people will speak from on high, as though their Ivy league degrees qualify them to pontificate on all matters. I'm not impressed by the Ivy league ass that lives across the street from me any more than I am by the group in Washington. It would be like me taking my degree in computer engineering and using it as qualification to do heart surgery. They are speaking out of their arses as far as I can tell.

Same thing with banking. If all the problems were so obvious, then why didn't they do something about it? If regulations were needed, then show me the ones they proposed. The only one that I saw that dealt with any of this, was the Fannie and Freddie legislation that was beaten with a stick by Democrats until it stopped moving.

We need to get off this idea that Ivy leaguers are going to fix our problems. They are the ones who put us here in the first place - we should have no reason to trust them to fix what they didn't even see coming!

It is not just Obama who is the target of the Republicans and conservatives to ridicule the Democrats and do all their propaganda to make the Democrats fail.. Remember how they treated the Clintons.. What they are doing to Obama is so tame compared to what they did to the Clintons. But the Clintons survive their attacks and for just one simple statement by Limbaugh, the liberal media went livid and wants to protect the infantile Obama. Enough already. Obama chose to be where he wants to be so he should be attacked just like the Clintons and other politicians for that matter.

Again as I keep writing in my posts here. I am rejoicing to see the Republicans in their situation now. I, too, left the Democratic Party and every time there is argument in my family, they immediately assume that I support the Republicans. I am in no way near any Republican. I do not subscribe to their idea of conservatism as they define it. I am with Bill Clinton, play by the rules that he kept talking about.. He failed in his morals and heck no one died. Whereas, politicians like Bush, Cheney and Obama and Biden, and Pelosi, and Harry Reid...They all lied and it cost us this bad economic down turn and I heard a few people committed suicide.. That is lying that I can not tolerate. No the immoral act that Bill Clinton is guilty of.. After all a some Republicans are just as guilty like Sen. Vetter who had an affair with a prostiture.

In my view, I prefer to be independent so I can scrutinize and make my decision when I vote in the general election. I can swing one way or the other way. I can look at the person I am voting for and not his party. If I like what I see and not what I hear from candidates, then I will vote for that candidate whether Democrat or Republican. I realize now both parties are just disgusting like the other one. I hated the Republicans and I keep rejoicing these days to see them cowering and lost. In the meantime, the Democrats now that they are in power are just as mean as the Republicans. What choice do I have? Just be independent.. I am having fun watching both parties stumble. In the meantime, I blame the American people who voted for these clowns. I also will never give money again to any politician. They do not deserve my hard earned money. Let them scramble and con everyone who wants to part with their money. No more money for them from my own wallet.. Let the others open their wallets.. Not me.

Don't you just hate it when someone tells you what kind of bumper sticker you should have on your car? In my part of the woods, some idiot printed the "Don't Blame me I voted for Bush" and made millions and later he also was responsible for the "Sore Loserman" and made more millions. I like to have the sticker that someone was talking about here at NQ..
"Honk if you are paying my mortgage." Can someone please tell me where to buy it? At my bank, most of the employees did not vote for Obama and they have a sticker with the "O" and its rays of blue and white followed by the word "S--t". That will certainly raise eyebrows and better not drive in the inner city neighborhood or you will be mugged or shot at..

We have BO disaster because of stupid Rush, remember his so-called operation chaos? If the repubs don't dump Rush and Newt they will lose again and again and again. They also need to stop idolizing Reagan, repubs are living in the past, they need new ideas, new blood and new direction. The young people I talked told me that during the election it was between the old guy and the "cool" guy, this is what the repubs are dealing with and they need a strategy to cope with this. Palin is the closest thing they have to a rock star, popularity whether good or bad was off the charts, let her have a go at it and put Rommey out there too for his business savvy.

great post SM and like it or not, capitalism is what gives us all a job. CEO's work alot of hours and make sacrifices most of us would not want to in order to run a company so they should be compensated. However when they bankrupt the company they are running, they should get NOTHING but a kick in the pants.

Businesses are in business to make a profit. Keep taxing them to support 40% of people, some illegal aliens, to sit on their lazy ass all day and not pay any taxes....they'll close up shop and sail off into the sunset and take their money w them.

Eventually the pain of these socialistic ideas like capping CEO pay and universal health care, will hit the pocketbooks of Kool Aid drinkers. And we all know they like to say they have compassion for the poor as long as they don't have to pay for it. We'll see how they like it then.

great post SM and like it or not, capitalism is what gives us all a job. CEO’s work alot of hours and make sacrifices most of us would not want to in order to run a company so they should be compensated. However when they bankrupt the company they are running, they should get NOTHING but a kick in the pants.

They all make me sick but after the way the Democrats acted w Obama, I will support the Republicans with a watchful eye. At least they "seem" to know the error of their ways and want to change. I reserve my right to change my mind if they don't come through.

It makes no sense that you take the word of a hard core liberal who admires Tucker Carlson immensely. Has it been that long ago that you have forgotten the disgust over Carlson's remarks he made about automatically crossing his legs any time Hillary's name is mentioned?

I watched Limbaugh's speech on Fox and don't recall any interruption in the signal during what you call the "gay slur routine." I also did not interpret that as a gay reference. He was referring to those who have lost their "....." within the Republican party. There is a rift between those like Limbaugh and other prominent Republicans who want the party to adopt a more moderate line. Limbaugh thinks the others are "giving in" and are weakening the party's conservative values. Thus, the reference to castration and the high-pitched voice. He followed by referring to them as having lost their guts. I believe it was a typical male/power thing that you hear all the time from men. It was not a reference to gays.

I've been forcing myself to read and listen to people from all over the political spectrum lately. Even have listened to Limbaugh the last couple weeks - enough to understand what he means about wanting Obama to fail. He doesn't want America to fail but he fears for our future and the future of all citizens if we go down the path that Obama seems to be taking us. He believes that America has become the beacon for freedom and prosperity because of the forsight the founders wrote into the Constitution. He believes that Obama is not just taking us down a path even more radical than Carter, but he believes that Obama is tearing the Constitution to shreds. Knowing this, it makes perfect sense that Limbaugh wants Obama to fail. He believes that Obama's success equals the demise of the U.S.

There is a lot I don't like about Limbaugh, but I do believe that he loves our country as much as anyone could. I also do not believe that he is a bigot or a racist or anything of the like. He just knows what he believes and stands up for his beliefs. He talks about how the Dems are always saying they are for the poor and the "little" people but that those peoples' lives have not gotten any better - the Dems don't seem to help them. He believes that the Dems stategy is to tear the "rich" people down so that everyone is "poor" while he believes that we should lift the "poor" up and into prosperity so that everyone is "rich."

Obama has made some very suspicious moves and I think that we all need to be on our toes. After all, Senator Byrd even wrote to Obama about the use of all the czars being a power grab - the czars are not under the supervision of the Congress, they report only to Obama.

And does anyone think that the leadership forcing the vote on the stimulus bill without time for it to be read, understood, and debated was following and promoting their oaths of office - every person in the House and Senate takes an oath to uphold the Constitution. How can the members know that a bill upholds and/or does not harm our constitutional rights if they are not allowed to read it? That was a betrayal of the public trust and borders on a type of treason. I would love to see someone start legal proceedings against the House and Senate majority leaders over that. That sort of thing must be stopped.

<blockquote>
"I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations.... This danger ought to be wisely guarded against."

<blockquote>"I`ve got no allegiance to the Repubs. I`m on a mission. And I don`t intend to fail. We left a job undone in November. Let`s finish it off and kill this progressive beast NOW!"</blockquote>

Sounds good to me. But let's call them regressives, rather than progressives.

As you become more successful your rewards become progressively higher, and so do your membership dues. It this so strange a concept?

Since there's an obvious correlation between wealth and power, progressive tax rates are essential if you want to retain anything resembling an actual working democracy.
