Because the dog was so emaciated when she was found, our vet wanted to wait a month or two for her to put on some weight so she could tolerate the anesthesia better. NONE of us knew she was pregnant – we got her on 1/10, and the pups were just born last night/Mon. morning, so she wasn’t showing at all. We were counting the days to get her spayed until we realized that she was already pregnant…

If I could have gotten her spayed earlier, I certainly would have. I’m a long-term member of the ASPCA and Humane Society, have gotten feral cats spayed/neutered when I lived in VA (they were around the house), and the whole nine yards. I am a FIRM believer in spaying/neutering one’s pets. It just wasn’t possible this time around, but I guarantee that is one of questions on the list for the vet tomorrow – how long we have to wait to get Lucy spayed! (Even though we have 3/4 of an acre fenced in just for the dogs, I know that where there is a will, there’s a way, and sure don’t want this to happen again. The puppies are beyond adorable, but there are too many unwanted animals already, especially in this economy…

And CG – thank you for remembering my previous post on Lucy! How very touching!

I had an already pregnant (fully starved, 6 mos old) rescue cat spayed when she showed up at my door, so it can be done — at least up to a certain point in the gestation process with felines. Although my options were more limited since I wasn’t at all sure the babies were alive when she underwent the operation, it has turned into an incredible blessing for both of us.

Paying taxes? How about also paying the late penalties and interest? Why should they be exempt from the rules that apply to everyone else?!!

Maybe Y2K did change things and we all got zombied or something. There seems to be no rational explanation for what’s gone on these last 9 years. I sure hope I wake up soon and everything makes sense again.

Strawberry is correct – this was a stray a friend found at her job. Believe you me, I am all abt Spay/neutering – all of my other animals are, and Lucy will be once she is able. I have not had an animal that had babies since I was a child – and then my parents had to deal with the mama, I’m sure.

Anywho – yeah, this was one of those “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished” kinds of things – we had NO idea she was pregnant when we rescued her…

But thank you for the message – it is an important one!

Her dog was a stray I believe. If I remember correctly, she showed up on her doorstep, already preggers. The little tart.

Amy, don’t want to take away from your day of joy because it really is a joyous thing to have puppies or kittens born, but with the population of cats and dogs in the US being put down at many thousands a day, why contribute to this overpopulation by not spaying your precious sweet dog? As owners we have to consider the present situation of animal overpopulation and suffering and do the right thing. Being someone who has watched many sweet lovable animals being put down for no reason other than there were too many of them for available homes, there was joy and sadness in news that you dog was having puppies. Please consider spaying her after this litter. Thanks for listening….and Congrats!

Wow…What an interesting story..Lucys labor…Hope the puppys arrive soon..and yes..we want pictures..What a Nice thing to stay by Lucy and comfort her…
Interesting going from that to the Obama ZOO…Lots of strange and alien critters over there…Seems like they get a New one Ever time we turn around…

We will see how many Bite won’t we…They ain’t going away..
