The Path To Destruction: Ignoring the Plight of the People

I remember the old days, when heavy metal was considered devil music. Well, sometimes the devil music gets it right. Take the Megadeth song “Symphony of Destruction” on the left and some of the lyrics: “You take a mortal man,/ And put him in control/ Watch him become a god.”

One of the problems that I’ve had with Obama is that he reminds me a lot of Arnold Schwarzenegger and California. (I believe someone will be discussing this at some point so I won’t go into details here.) Schwarzenegger came to power as a very popular executive that too few in the CA legislature were willing to publicly challenge, particularly because of his supposed “bipartisan” governing philosophy. Unfortunately, Schwarzenegger and the willing CA legislature made some face saving decisions that didn’t address long term structural deficiencies in the state. Now CA is in some serious economic troubles.

The country is at a pivotal point in time, just like CA was in 2003-2004. Our decisions can address the economic situation in a meaningful manner or exacerbate the problems. As Salon mentions, extreme economic conditions can lead to disaster:

But another perilous consequence of the crash of 2008 has only recently made its appearance: increased civil unrest and ethnic strife. Someday, perhaps, war may follow.

As people lose confidence in the ability of markets and governments to solve the global crisis, they are likely to erupt into violent protests or to assault others they deem responsible for their plight, including government officials, plant managers, landlords, immigrants and ethnic minorities.

Make sure you click on the link to find some specific examples.

This comes to mind because I recently took a look at the latest unemployment numbers. They are clearly not very good. I know some don’t always follow links, so I’ll reproduce one of the graphs here for you:

While its important to address the problems facing the financial institutions, its important not to forget about the people’s problems. There are a lot of hard working Americans without a job and who are unable to find work. I’ve heard several places that people should take what they can get, but if you’ve talked to people you’ll find that even manual labor and retail work is hard to find. I have a friend who has to layoff several people in their department for the first time since he’s been there (about 20 years). Temp agencies have an overabundance of applicants and a shortage of available work. And its likely to get much worse before it gets better.

We need to act with urgency and in a sound manner. Failing to do so, or doing what Schwarzenegger and his puppet legislature did, can lead to some very serious problems in this country.

As a Californian, this post does not make much sense to me. Arnie was the Republican replacement for Gray Davis, our Dem. governor. The legislature is overwhelmingly Dem. in CA and very liberal. It has had a remarkable record of adding programs without adding resources for paying for them. The major reason why CA is in such dire financial straits is simply the reality that the revenue side can be highly volatile in this state. We are experiencing a perfect storm: over-aggressive spending plans, Republican doggedness about no tax increases/Dem doggedness about no program cuts, high costs of fire damage and drought impact, an educational system that reels under countless unfunded mandates, spiraling student/school needs, declining support for public education. The Democratic legislature in CA is no puppet legislature of the Terminator. Nor is the Republican minority. The legislative rules in CA make it certain that CA will have budget stalemates as it requires a 2/3 vote to pass the budget.

I’m a Californian also, and Chris makes a lot of sense to me. I know a couple of the politicians who were more starstruck than concerned about the rest of us.

Thank doesn’t mean you don’t also make some good points, jangles.

Fact is, our state is a MESS!

      • Obama: Dubya II Electric Boogaloo

Our state is totally F’d up. We have like, what, a $100 billion dollar budget and $34 Billion goes to welfare and $50+ billion goes to K-12 and colleges. Yet our schools suck and teachers cry how broke they are. WTF?

  • Obamastolemyboyfriend

What can we do? I tried like hell not to let this POS into office, but many thought we just had to have Mr. Wonderful (puke). He was going to send us the unicorns and make everything all better just by waving his magic wand of hopium. Now what?

That’s what I’d like all the bots to tell me, now what?

The dow is down 299.64 again. I am predicting 5000 for a low because all through the primary, I read expert after expert, after expert say that BHO would kill the economy. Well, thanks, bots. Hey, maybe those bots would like to give up their home for someone else or even their jobs. They were willing to give up their piece of the pie from what MEchelle had to say (ok well, maybe they thought I’d give up my pie) so I think they should show us how all this generosity works.

BTW, if I help out anybody, it will be only people who say, “What the hell, I didn’t sign up for this crap. I voted for Hillary and then Johnny Mac.” Those people will get my help. Hopey-changey bots? Go stand outside the White House and see if you can get a hand out.

We are all on our own with this administration. That is why I rejected it. We have no leaders in this country. none. Write to your representatives about any topic and listen to the hopium shit they spew. yep. Let me know who you think is going to help us because I sure as hell have no idea. I am helping myself and my friends as best I can. We are on our own here in the Ghost town of US leadership.

You can thank Oprah for Arnold…

      • Cahil

Apparently, we can thank Oprah for a lot more than that. And she has already proven that she is no ace in the judgment department by touting factual “memoirs” hat turn out to be a lot more fiction than anything else.

        Yeah, thanks Oprah.

        • Anon

Yeah, whoever deemed dumbass OPRAH to be an expert on anything.

          • Ferd Berfle

hoever deemed dumbass OPRAH to be an expert on anything.

She caters to the lowest common denominator and is therefore an expert on everything for the masses. No matter that she knows jack-squat about anything other than conning the American public out of their money while at the same time having no remorse for said conning.

    • no kidding

Obamastolemyboyfriend — Hope and change turned out to be hopeless and chump change. Obama doesn’t even mention the stock market tanking because of his wild ideas–even though the American people’s pensions are tanking as well. When he was inaugurated he was at 82%. Now he’s at 58% — so maybe he’s tanking as well.

  • jangles

Second thought: It was the Gov. who forced through some revenue increases and expenditure cuts to try to balance CA budget or rather close the yawning black hole.

  • jangles

The One is winning the political battles; he is losing the economic war.

    • no kidding

jangles — 49% of the American people polled do not want a massive Healthcare program at this time. But Obama has his own agenda and he is oblivious to the rest of us.

I’ll be the first to admit Seattle Moss, I was scared last fall. The thought of banks closing and no credit. Paulson had me absolutely terrified. But looking back, collectively we should have just taken the hit and gotten it over with quickly.

One of Schwarzenegger’s first actions was to cut taxes (remember the car tabs). This, combined with the general difficulties of CA, which you mentioned, left the state in a hole financially. In 2004, the Gov, along with a willing legislature, pushed through Prop 57 which was essentially just a big loan. This gave the illusion that things were fine, but it was the state living off of borrowed money. There was not a real effort to address the fundamental issues facing the state.

I remember the battle over prop 57 quite well. I also remember talking to Dem legislators who basically said that prop 57 wasn’t the final answer but that it was dangerous to challenge Schwarzenegger. To me, that was the pivotal moment in the state. Since then, the state was living off of borrowed money.

    • CMartin

Sorry, this was supposed to be a reply to the first comment.

I am under the impression that in addition to all the other problems which CA is suffering at the moment, the illegal alien problem is also huge. It is not only a drain on the econnomy/resources, but because they DO NOT PAY TAXES there is obviously a lack of cash flow from that direction. Because illegals are coming into CA (and other SW states) in droves, this causes an unbalance of tax payers (revenue base) versus non tax payers (take from the system). Finally, people who do make a living and PAY TAXES are moving OUT of CA, either due to losing jobs or the high taxes, thus creating a huge revenue deficit. Lots of people moving in who do not pay taxes + lots of tax payers moving out + liberal, spend, spend, spend, state gov= BIG TROUBLE. Do the math– it ain’t pretty.

Republicans are laughing up their sleeves, having handed Obama a large, malodorouts turd on 20 JAN.

Today we let AIG gum the public teat again.

For a Trillion GringoBux, couldn’t we just innoculate all the children, build some hospitals and fund some sort of Universal Healthcare?

Nooooo…. bonuses for the cluless and terminally avaricious are more worthy of the public lucre.

LET THE BANKS FAIL! Life will go on.

I’m sorry, I love the landscape and seascape as much as anyone, but doesn’t CA have some oil and natural gas reserves they could tap to bring in some cash? I think it is time for some folks to wake up and live in the real world like the rest of us. You’ve got to pay the piper.

  • Linda Anselmi

Enjoyed the post – and the music video is a nice touch!

Re: salon’s comment on “people… likely to erupt into violent protests or to assault others they deem responsible.” Have recently seen several “locked & loaded” jokes and cartoons. And it just doesn’t strike me as funny in the least.

it is scary how the vast majority of americans, the average working people who make or break the american economy are being totally overlooked, isn’t it? the gubment is falling all over itself to dump billions on their fat-cat cronies and campaign contributors, but what are they doing that will make any LONG TERM, FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMY?????

haven’t they heard, the common folk have next to no (relatively) good paying jobs, regardless of how much education they have?? Don’t they know that america must produce more than it consumes, or it will never be economically sound?? The “markets” don’t produce shit, they only produce a temporary illusion of wealth. america needs beaucoup VALUE-ADDING, WEALTH PRODUCING REAL JOBS!!!!!!! the “markets” will be fine after that.

    • no kidding

NoBamaNoWay Obama is getting together with Gordon Brown, PM of Great Britain to aid the world’s economy. If we’re falling apart how can we help the rest of the world? A prominent Democrat said that in 15 years the world will have one currency. Brother can you spare $10,000,000 I want to buy a loaf of bread.

May Day May Day is there anyone who hasn’t been hurt by this economy who can help us?

      • obamastolemyboyfriend

I think we must follow the every man/woman for themselves philosophy.

  • TeakwoodKite

One of the structural problems that plagues California is that budget is over obligated by ballot initiatives and local fiefdoms.

Add a political landscape that akin to the San Andreas and a whole lot of nothing shaking going on.

There is a loss of two billion dollars and 95,000 jobs lost due to the Fed’s giving a big O, to the central valley farmers for water.

I would rather have them grow food then flushing twice a day.

Anyone know the total debt carried by the fifty states?

    Good read Crhis,thanks
