UPDATED: In Memoriam for Dallas Motorcycle Officer (+ Open Thread)

UPDATE: 2/22/2008 — Statement from Hillary Rodham Clinton. Senator Clinton gave the following statement earlier this morning at approximately 10:30 a.m. CST.

“I just learned of the death of a Dallas police officer in a devastating accident that occurred as these motorcycle officers were leading our cars to this site. We are just heartsick over this loss of life and I have asked that my condolences be conveyed to the family. I will call them as soon as it is appropriate to do so. I have placed a call to the Chief of Police expressing my sympathy. This reminds us, once again, what our men and women in law enforcement do every single day and it is important that we respect and appreciate their service. I certainly am grateful for all they do for me and more importantly what they do for citizens in cities like Dallas and others across our country.”

“I just want to express my deepest condolences to the family and to the Dallas police department on this tragic, tragic loss.”

Breaking on MSNBC … Hillary Clinton briefly addressed a group gathered at a Ft. Worth rally, and said:

“Thank you all for being here and God bless you, but we cannot have a rally … it would not be appropriate.” [Verbatim -- I typed what Contessa Brewer quoted her saying to the crowd -- backed up my DVR to type it.]

She is heading to Dallas to be with the family at [Methodist] hospital [in Dallas], Brewer said. And Brewer reports that Hillary has already talked with the Dallas chief of police.

MSNBC just showed very upsetting images of the accident aftermath — the officer’s helmet on the ground, and the badly battered motorcycle. (This happened this morning in her motorcade in Dallas … I haven’t looked up a news story, and if any of you want to add those below, please do.)

It’s very, very sad. Our sincerest sympathies go to that Dallas motorcycle officer’s family. God, he was probably working overtime to make extra money for his family, like police officers so often have to do.

Earlier, I noticed that Mr. Murder is posting some important news, and wish to also give him and others a chance to discuss other topics. I’m not going to post any other topics here at the moment.

    This is very very sad.

It reminds me of JFK’s assasination, god forbid.

My deepest sympathy to the family, also.

If you can — the Bush administration continues its terrible assault on wildlife:

The message below asks concerned Americans to oppose the Bush Administration’s plan to allow the mass killing of wolves in Greater Yellowstone and across the Northern Rockies. You can help us mobilize a massive outcry against this senseless slaughter by forwarding the message to six of your friends, family members or colleagues.

The message below, urging concerned Americans to oppose the mass killing of gray wolves in Greater Yellowstone and across the Northern Rockies, was sent to you by

    http://www.nrdcactionfund.org

    Dear Friend,

The Bush Administration has just announced a plan to strip gray wolves in the Northern Rockies of endangered species protection. In the meantime, the administration has handed down a “License to Kill” rule that is the equivalent of a death sentence for hundreds of these endangered gray wolves.

We can still force the White House to call off the guns — before any shots are fired — but we must move quickly.

Please ask your Representative to sign on to a letter drafted by Representative Nick Rahall of West Virginia that tells the administration to abandon its plan to strip wolves of endangered species protection and leave them vulnerable to mass killing.

If this senseless plan moves forward, both Wyoming and Idaho are planning to use aerial gunning — as well as baiting and trapping — to exterminate hundreds of wolves. Taken together, their plans could drive northern Rocky Mountain gray wolves back to the brink of extinction.

In Idaho, the governor himself has boasted, “I’m prepared to bid for that first ticket to shoot a wolf myself.”

Wyoming’s plan classifies wolves as “predatory animals” in most of the state. As predators, wolves could be shot on sight anywhere by anyone at anytime.

The wolf’s remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction in Greater Yellowstone is one of America’s greatest environmental success stories. Don’t let the Bush Administration destroy that success!

Send a message today urging your Representative to protect endangered wolves from mass killing:

    Frances Beinecke

Susan I know how much you and Larry support Hillary. But one huge hypocrisy for me last night was to have Hillary talk about Obama’s “alleged” plagiarism and then have Hillary using “whole passages” out of Edwards talking points to close the debate.

Hillary closes the debate with Edwards talking points. Plagiarism?

When Hillary tried to pound Obama based on “plagiarrism” and Clinton closed “plagiarizing” Edwards words this was incredibly hypocritical.

“CLINTON: Well, I think that if your candidacy is going to be about words, then they should be your own words. That’s, I think, a very simple proposition. (APPLAUSE) And, you know, lifting whole passages from someone else’s speeches is not change you can believe in, it’s change you can Xerox. And I just don’t think…

    “”OBAMA: Come on.”

    (CROSSTALK)

CLINTON: No, but, you know, but, Barack, it is. Because, you know, if you look — if you look — if you look at the YouTube of these videos, it does raise questions. Now, there is no doubt that you are a passionate, eloquent speaker, and I applaud you for that. But when you look at what we face in this country, we do need to unite the country, but we have to unite it for a purpose around very specific goals.

Hillary closed the debate with Edwards words (he said this many times during his candidacy.

Whatever happens, we’re going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we’ll be able to say the same thing about the American people, and that’s what this election should be about. (APPLAUSE)

    the debate transcript
    http://polstate.com/?p=5254

How many times did we hear Edwards say this during his run for President? Many Many times
“But I want to say this to everyone: with Elizabeth, with my family, with my friends, with all of you and all of your support, this son of a millworker’s gonna be just fine. Our job now is to make certain that America will be fine.”

Edwards closing statements in New Orleans
    http://www.johnedwards.com/

Hillary’s team should drop the plagiarism hype if they are going to continue to plagiarize “whole passages” of Edwards talking points

Kathleen, I have huge respect for your support of Edwards. But Hillary did not lift that from Edwards, except in a very general way — despite people like Kos and Marshall trying to make that case with a very, very weak video that shows very different wording.

It’s wholly different from Obama’s near-verbatim lifting of entire passages from Deval Patrick and even Edwards. It is ALSO significant that David Axelrod worked for all three — and fed all three the SAME lines.

I’m posting something about it later.

Her campaign has a hugely effective rebuttal to that.

And Larry, last night, posted a great comment on the psychological reasons for Kos and Josh to go after Hillary — and (!) that both men got fed that by Obama’s campaign.

A great many people — EVEN MIKA BRZEZINSKI, an Obama supporter, on MSNBC this morning — said that the Clinton/Edwards comparison does NOT FLY. She watched the video put out by the Obama campaign, and laughed it off.

    There is not there there.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

They’ve released his identity on MSNBC. She is enroute to Methodist hospital in Dallas.

  • Anne

What a terrible thing – my heart goes out to this man’s family.

Once again, Hillary demonstrates great sensitivity to the situation, and I commend her for doing the exact right thing at such a terrible time.

    ******

Kathleen, have you not seen this from the Clinton campaign?

The Obama campaign clearly went into panic mode when they heard the extraordinarily passionate and personal answer Senator Clinton gave at the end of the debate. Senator Clinton’s response demonstrated why she’ll be the next President which is why the Obama campaign is now attacking her for using a common English phrase in that answer – “whatever happens, we’re going to be fine.”
Don’t think it’s common? Here are a few examples of just how widespread the phrase is:

Laura Bush: ‘Whatever happens will be fine’ [El Paso Times, 5/19/00]

NBA Star Shaquille O’Neal: ‘We’ll be fine, no matter what happens.’ [AP, 10/8/03]

Actress Lindsay Lohan: ‘No matter what happens, we’re going to be fine.’ [AP, 4/19/07]

Former Redskin Dexter Manley: ‘Whatever happens, I’m going to be fine.’ [Washington Post, 7/26/98]

Former Redskin Gus Frerotte: ‘I look forward to whatever happens. We’re going to be fine.’ [Washington Times, 12/22/98]

Notre Dame football player Tom Zbikowski: ‘Whatever happens, we’re going to be fine back there.’ [Notre Dame football player Tom Zbikowski, 4/22/07]

Angels GM Bill Stoneman: ‘Whatever happens, I’m going to be fine.’ [Los Angeles Times, 2/22/03]

Former Giant Christian Peter: ‘And whatever happens, I’m going to be fine.’ [Asbury Park Press, 1/29/01]

Chicago Cub Larry Rothschild: ‘I’m not worried about that. Whatever happens, I’m going to be fine.’ [St. Petersburg Times, 4/1/01]

Diamondback Edgar Gonzalez: ‘Whatever happens, I’ll be fine because I’m in the big leagues.’ [Edgar Gonzalez, Diamondbacks, 5/2/07]

Hockey player Richard Hamula: ‘Whatever happens I’ll be fine with but hopefully I can still stick around here.’ [Richard Hamula, hockey player, 9/20/02]

Leonard Hamm, interim commissioner for the Baltimore City Police Department: ‘Whatever happens, I’m going to be fine.’ [Baltimore Afro-American, 11/19/04]

Please stop pushing this ridiculous notion that a phrase that is part of the common language, and something we have probably all said at some point in our lives, is being plagiarized by Hillary, and that John Edwards somehow “owns” it.

    This is really getting tiresome.

  • alexei

I am very sorry to hear about this tragedy and hope for the best for his family.

  • Kathleen

I have no problem with Obama or Clinton lifting from Edwards talking points…and they have. But to point the finger at OBama and then for Hillary to do the same is pure and simple hypocrisy.

Hey when they hear and see a good line and stand behind it …I say go for it but acknowledge where it came from if necessary

  • Mel

This is a thread towards a tragic accident today and my sympathy’s to the family of their tragic loss!

I would also like to express an apology to the family for the ill manner in which the Obama supporters use a blog of this nature to keep their empty nd useless rhetoric flowing, it just goes to show the reality of certain people and their lack of maturity!

  • Kathleen

this is the first time I have brought this up. Edwards used this line endlessly. And you know that the point is valid. Hillary (who I am leaning towards) should not point the finger and then continue to do this in her own speeches. It is contradictory! She is better off not doing this

  • Kathleen

    So very sad!

OH GREAT! Kathleen, e-mail me a report if you’re up for it. I’d love to hear your observations.

  • Rob Gard

This is a link to a local Dallas news organization. The officer, a father of 4, is identified in the story:
    http://www.ktre.com/Global/story.asp?S=7911210

As a motorcyclist myself, and having seen the pavement up-close-and personal a few times, my heart goes out to this officer and his family.

  • http://www.despair.com/doubt.html Smilin’ Jim

The NYT carried the story but quickly segwayed to

“In those remarks, which some took as a valedictory to her long campaign for the nomination, ……………..Aides insisted the remark was not an admission that she believed she would lose the race but ……………”

In other words a cop died and we have the lurid photos, damned shame ya know, but never mind, Hillary’s admitted she lost.

Also an article reporting that some of her backers are worried about her fiscal management style is on the Times most emailed list. It is written by Pat Healy, the Times designated excoriator of the Clinton campaign. The article’s point is that people who have given he money aren’t happy that the money went to consultants who produced a losing strategy. Of course if she wins Texas (too close to call) and Ohio the argument will be made that these genius strategists possess the Midas touch. So it goes.

    The bottom line?

Hillary’s glass will always be half empty for the media conglomerates.

Suck it up troops, we are ciphers and they control the game.

  • John

Kathleen has no shame. What Hillary said has been said by many, many candidates over the years. Hey Kathleen, how about when candidates say “God Bless America?” Is that plagarism too?

Meanwhile Obama bleats ENTIRE SPEECHES given by other people and calls them his own words. Yep, exact same thing. Jeesh. Is there anything a Hillary Hater won’t say?

  • Kathleen

I truly did not even hear anything from the Obama camp just my observations. I have heard both Obama and Clinton repeating many of Edwards talking points Obama “the homeless Vets”. Hillary after one of the debates that Edwards had said that “this was personal”. The next week Hillary was using that line. Let me be clear I do not have a problem with this.

I just think the Hillary team looks “silly” for pointing at Obama and then continuing to do it.

I think they should acknowledge what good ideas and talking points they all have Obama “yes we can” Hillary soon after “yes we will” and so on.

I want them both with Edwards as the Attorney General

  • Kathleen

Sick to my stomach..so very very sad! Hillary is doing the right thing by canceling the next rally.

    Motorcycles scare me…so vulnerable

  • Kathleen

I disagree! From what I am hearing here in Ohio I think Hillary is going to kick some butt!

  • Rob Gard

Smilin’ Jim — I think that Healy’s hit piece in the NY Times was clearly intended to “starve the beast” as Repugs are wont to do. Since Hillary won’t leave the stage gracefully, these folks who want to write her obituary are trying to cut off the oxygen and other forms of life support that sustain campaigns. Articles like Healy’s generally have that effect. At the very least, they can make potential donors take a “wait-and-see” stance, and delay their contributions, and such delay can be devastating to a campaign as well.

  • Kathleen

Will do! One of my numerous opportunities to see the Clintons and the Gore’s was in Columbus Ohio during their run for the White House in 92. I had gotten my spot to shake hands with all of them and had my youngest daughter in my arms (5 at the time). My other two daughters and friends had excitedly found their spots for a front row encounter.

Right next too me a young man kept yelling out “I want to marry my boyfriend Steve, I want to marry my boyfriend Steve” Bill walked by solidly shaking people hands and looking into every persons eyes (serious stamina) He did not respond to the young mans calls. Either did Tipper or Al. But Hillary stopped right next to me, took the young man’s hand, looked directly into his eyes and said “you must not be listening to what we are saying, we are clearly addressing your concerns”. Her attention to him was like a laser beam cutting through all of the horseshit and getting right to the issue. She did not look down at him, or kiss his ass…just went straight to the point and addressed his concerns. I will also never forget watching her present her research on the health care system and the INsurance industry in 93 or 94. She knocked my socks off with her depth of understanding, her commitment and her attention to detail. When she received a standing ovation from both the Senate and the House, I thought to myself she is going to have her ass kicked by the Insurance lobbyist. She did!

Hillary understands the mess our health care system is in and so much more, I completely trust her on this issue, I know she is committed to solving these very serious problems. I know she is an example of Democracy in Action. (I am leaning)

I was impressed and still am by Hillary, just do not want to witness us pre-emptively attack Iran. Do not want to witness more innocent people die due to my countries immoral invasions or pre-emtpive attacks

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

I believe you that you didn’t see actual Obama campaign info, but can tell you that wherever you saw it, it came from Obama’s campaign.

It could be silly but for the ESSENTIAL fact that the vast majority of Obama’s supporters are for him based solely on his rhetoric, which it turns out is not very original, let alone accurate.

Just like his books, which are made up of composite characters as well as stories that, the Chicago Tribune found, do not add up when compared to the facts as well as recollections of many others.

Then there was Tim Russert’s Q of Obama re a key passage in his latest book about policy — and Obama didn’t even remember he’d written it, even though it was very important. When Russert asked Obama to provide an EXAMPLE of what he meant by the passage, Obama had a very tough time of it, and his answer was so lame that it was lampooned widely.

He’s a media phenomenon on to whom people PROJECT their own hopes and aspirations.

  • Kathleen

One night as MSNBC was airing Hillary and Obama’s speeches to two different crowds, they showed all of Obama’s speech and cut Hillary’s in half.

    It was oh so obvious!

Beautiful testimonial, and what a great personal story about her.

I am looking forward to your e-mail report!

Hillary supporter, here and I agree. Drop the plagiarism charge and instead wave the CLONE BANNER! Barack Obama instead of being a fresh, new and original politician who can usher in change, is nothing more than the construct of David Axelrod. He’s a CLONE cut off the same political DNA as Deval Patrick. Do some research to find out how Deval Patrick has fared his 1st year in office. Obama is selling himself like any politician to get elected. There’s a huge diffence between campaigning and being prepared to govern. Hillary proved once again by her fluidity of extemporaneous speech, her solid command of the issues and her toughness as she is regularly under fire. I want a President like that. Ready on DAY ONE to hit the ground running.

It’s deeply disturbing to me that a lot of people don’t.

My condolences to the officer’s family. I will not post a comment for the rest of the day.

Wasn’t that awful. Obama was very rude to step up to the stage so quickly without letting her speak longer. Frankly, I’ve never seen another candidate do that — perhaps it’s happened before, but not in my recollection.

And it happened on ALL the channels. I checked. They all switched to Obama.

Nonetheless, she called him that night to congratulate him. Which he has not done for her when she’s won.

She has class. And she would have never cut into Obama’s speech so early on, had she been the winner.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Great! Texas is a big problem. I got a copy of a letter to all Texans in the GOP. …. since their candidate is decided, they’re going to play games, and vote for Obama. I can post that later. It’s sickening. But that is what happens with screwed-up primary systems.

    Turkish troops enter north Iraq

Turkish ground forces have crossed the border into northern Iraq to target Kurdish rebels said to be sheltering there, Ankara has said.

It said the raid began late on Thursday after an air and artillery bombardment.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said the offensive is limited in scale and troops will return as soon as possible.

Iraqi officials say they remain unaware of any major incursion into the north, and Kurdish officials believe it took place in a remote and unpopulated area.

“The target, purpose, size and parameters of this operation are limited,” said Mr Erdogan, whose comments were televised.

PKK fighters are known to use northern Iraq as a base
“Our armed forces will come back in the shortest time possible as soon as they achieve their objectives,” he said, insisting that members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were the sole targets.

What’s worse is he’s all about speeches, and how good of a speaker he is.

From YouTube of last night’s debate, Obama said this (at 40 seconds in):

“What I’ve been talking about in these speeches — and I’ve got to admit, some of them are pretty good — …”

In the same debate he brushed off the fact that he copied whole passages from Deval Patrick as campaign “silly season.”

It’ s his niche, Axlerod found a niche market, a niche poltician to market, the black man. Now he too can be rich and famous, a federal player, another Karl Rove (ha!), finally realizing his dreams.

Oh, god, it’s like a trail of Britney Spears, the stupid, cowardly would be political gurus…

In response to (and in support of Kathleen), though I do want to keep the focus on the tragedy in Dallas, Kathleen hasn’t hijacked this thread — it is an open thread, even if many people here are discussing what happened in Dallas, there was no breach of etiquette for Kathleen to discuss something else.

I would also like to point out that just because she voices a criticism of Clinton, it does not make her an Obama supporter — in fact she says that she’s leaning toward Clinton. Please, please don’t let this become a place where any criticism of Clinton will be reason for unthinking abuse of the critic — that is what is happening on so many other blogs when one dares to criticize Obama, and is the reason why I have stopped visiting DailyKos (among others) after having been a near daily visitor for over 4 years. Clinton, like Obama is not perfect and is not above criticism (actual criticism that is, not smears).

But to address Kathleen — I do believe that there is a difference — there are many more examples of Obama “borrowing” not only rhetoric, but substantial philosophical and political positions. The reason I find it so troubling in his case, is because the only thing we have to go on with him is his words — if his words and his ideas aren’t his own, we’re in big, big trouble (see Bush, George W.).

Also, if Clinton borrowed her closing argument last night from anyone, it was from her husband, and I am much more willing to give the benefit of the doubt to spouses who claim similar language used to express ideas based on their relationship than I am to ‘friends’ and ‘campaign chairs’ who share similar language based on that relationship.

Just one more point, when Clinton supporters respond to “Yes we can” with “Yes we will”, they aren’t borrowing, they are responding — they are pointing out a weakness in Obama’s rhetoric by turning it on it’s head, and addressing a bigger concern by underlining the difference between words and deeds.

Kathleen, I’m from MA. I saw Patrick give that speech. Come on, it’s highly bizarre to lift an entire speech. By the way, it was titled “just words”. Also, Obama took lines from the Malcolm X movie, highly divisive and not genuine.

She is doing remarkably well against a strong headwind. I would have to go back to Tammy Faye Bakker to find a woman who was so universally and so unfairly maligned.

Nonetheless the headwind does exist and her post-New Hampshire lead in Texas of three or four weeks ago has slipped to Obama being favored 7 chances in 8 to beat her. Clinton 2.48; Obama 1.5 –the lower the better)

There was a strong Bradley Effect within California liberal Democrats that transformed a dead heat into a 10% edge statewide for Clinton. The best hope for the stalwarts is to hope one prejudice trumps another. It’s the American way.

Using the same source, in your own state of Ohio she has 10 chances in 11 of winning and Obama has 4 chances in 6 of winning. A favorable lead, yet not a commanding one. Good luck.

She really needs both Texas and Ohio. I doubt if just Ohio alone will stop the headwind from the Obama cartel of Newscorp, Time Warner, Disney and Viacom.

You know that I am fully aware of this in fact posted what I had witnessed first hand while working for Edwards in South Carolina. I spoke with hundreds of Obama supporters who were unable to respond (every single one of them) to my challenge when I would hear them say that they were supporting Obama because of “hope and change”. I challenged them over and over again for more evidence of Obama’s stance on issues.

At the same time Obama does inspire in a big way and has stood firm on some issues. Against the invasion of Iraq was huge (even though he was not in a position to have to vote)

She isn’t an Obama supporter. She’s had deep conflicts over the remaining candidates. She was an edwards supporter. I feel for Edwards supporters — every one of them. She is going to see Hillary tomorrow, and saw her in 1992. Let’s be better than the Obama people here. (Not directly at you specifically, Simon, but at all who gave Kathleen a hard time … now she and I have had fistacuffs … when she called Hillary a name I don’t like / but Kathleen remains a regular here, and a lot of conflicted people might have walked away. But for some reason, Kathleen has continued to come here and participate, and I admire that.)

  • Simon

Smarter, if the democratic leaders can’t even anticipate the trouble with Obama.

    And Kathleen,

The reason, in part, Obama’s plagirism is so troubling is because it points to a grave inabilty to think critically, and therefore, shows an alarming lack of skill in recognizing and solving problems.

Obama would be the one who has to sign off on Iraq, and Russia-Kosovo, or Russia-Iran, or China-the US economy, and he is showing us s he is unfit to assume this responsibilty, because he lacks the skill, the intellect, to understand and properly evaluate what he sees.

We really don’t want another dumb man in the White House. And all the Harvard degrees in the world can’t compensate for Obama’s lack of intellectual acumen. He might have made a FINE middle manager, somewhere, but he does not belong in the Presidency.

In additoin, Obama is corrupt, covering up a DIRECT relationship to a man with ties to terrorism, Nadhmi Auchi.

WHY would we want so questionable a man as President?

Clinton doesn’t have direct ties to terrorists, and she is capable of writing policy, by far the superior canidate. She is also capable of understanding the problems in the world, complex problems that require complex solutions. SHE will improve your quality of life, Obama will worsen it, just like Bush.

    Obama just isn’t qualified.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Many here who posted may not know you and your history here. I apologize, Kathleen. This is more typical of the Obama supporters, but I suspect a lot of Clinton supporters are feeling a lot of tension these days, as well as seeing the challenges ahead. No excuses. Just a thought. (And to those who’ve been upset today, I share YOUR pain as well — and I am dealing with such frustration and impatience with voters who are only hearing speeches, and aren’t thinking.) As I said above, Kathleen, you and I have had a few heated exchanges … but we got past them.

We can all emulate Hillary Clinton’s extraordinary positive behavior and her concern for others — particularly the Intrepid survivors whose physical and mental challenges are so incredible that MOST of us will never know that kind of agony and struggle — last evening at the conclusion of the debate, and her great dignity and concern today for the officer’s family. She is someone to aspire to.

Newark, NJ—Seton Hall Law’s Center for Policy and Research has discovered new evidence of a longstanding government practice of recording interrogations at Guantánamo Bay. In light of the national debate about the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) destruction of video recordings, the report proves that the two CIA tapes that were destroyed were only a tiny fraction of perhaps 24,000 recorded interrogations.

A May 2005 report by Lieutenant General Kevin Kiley confirms that each interrogation at Guantánamo was videotaped. Lieutenant General Randall Schmidt issued a report the following month stating that more than 24,000 interrogations of detainees took place at Guantánamo over a three-year period. In the meantime, the Bush administration has announced it will pursue the death penalty for six detainees who will stand trial for crimes related to the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Professor Mark Denbeaux, Director of the Center for Policy and Research at Seton Hall Law, commented, “Our students proved that Guantánamo interrogations were videotaped, which impacts the impending trials of the six detainees. We all want to see the perpetrators of 9/11 punished. But if the tapes of those interrogations still exist, it is imperative that we understand, before these trials start, whether the information was obtained through standard interrogation procedures or through torture.”

Captured on Tape, the Center’s seventh Guantánamo Report, is based entirely on the government’s own documents, most of which were procured through Freedom of Information Act suits. The prior Reports have been cited by the Senate Armed Services Committee, the House Armed Services Committee, the House Appropriations Committee, and the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security; and introduced into the Congressional Record.

It is fine. I also put up that this is a open thread…. just because we have some regulars here, like Mr. Murder, who always have so much hard news and analysis to offer, and I hadn’t gotten up an Open Thread / would have posted one separately, usually, but I didn’t honestly anticipate the incredible response that the tragic news would have on people.

I’m listening to the VERY moving account by the Dallas police chief of Hillary Clinton’s meeting with his widow — who the chief describes as a remarkable woman who told them the history of his life, and HOW MUCH PRIDE he took in his job today. He wanted to be sure he wore his best uniform. He cared greatly about the HONOR of the escort today. My impression was that the chief was touched by Sen. Clinton’s conversation with his widow. Joining them were other dept personnel as well as the mayor of Dallas.

    Day 333 and counting down.

Dick Cheney called the interrogation of the three suspects who were waterboarded “a good thing,” and cheering from the sidelines, Antonin Scalia, the administration’s favorite Supreme Court justice, mused in a radio interview that it would be “absurd” to assume any clear constitutional restrictions on “so-called torture” when potential terrorist threats are at issue

    Kathleen,
If she had said, “This son of a mill worker and his family”, then it would be plagiarism. It is true she expressed the same sentiments as Edwards but she did so in the context of her own life. True?

The problem for Obama is that he lifted entire passages of speeches by others as his own. He did so verbatim.

I understand the desire of Obama’s spinners to try to equate what he did with Hillary’s comments, but its not even the same league.

  • Simon

Also an article reporting that some of her backers are worried about her fiscal management style is on the Times most emailed list. It is written by Pat Healy, the Times designated excoriator of the Clinton campaign

I think it was dcmediagirl who pointed out HOW the Times was covering the primaries, choosing narrative, truth be damned.

Having our presidential elections covered by frustrated wannabe fiction writers goes a long way toward explaning Obama’s aura.

But seeing how the election is swung, here, from No Quarter, outside looking in, it’s an empowering perspective, isn’t it?

Sometimes things change, I really hope Clinton wins Texas and Ohio, democrats may be stupid about Obama, but republicans are even more stupid about McCain. And I think McCain would win, no contest.

Someone once told me to get a subscription to the New York Times, glad I cancelled it, I never felt it was relevant.

    Kathleen,

I’ve watched the videos of Obama/Deval’s “just words” and Hillary/Edwards “we’re going to be fine”. My thoughts:

Obama lifted the “just words” portion of the speech almost in it’s entirety. It was a very specific message, ironically, about the meaning of words. I agree with Hillary, if you are going to argue that words mean something, they should be YOUR words.

Hillary does echo Edwards sentiments in her closing. But I think the difference is it was an impromptu speech stressing a Universal theme, one I hope all the candidates share. The phrase is so common place as to be cliche, but I think Edwards has used it effectively and so did Hillary last night.

  • LuigiDaMan

If Kathleen “worked in Ohio, then she can confirm the fact that this state is way too prejudiced to elect Obama. Kathleen, I live here. It is amazing how narrow-minded this state has become. I find that Hillary is electable here, but Obama will turn the state over to the Repugs.

  • cloudy

One the topic of hypocrisy, how ironic is it that moments after brushing off the plagiarism accusation as “silly season” in politics, the Obama camp does the same thing?

Kathleen, I supported Edwards also. What made my mind up was Obama’s attacks on Universal Health Care. The way I see it, a Democrat in office who attacks UHC with Harry & Louise scare tactics is more damaging to the party and the long-term goal than a Republican doing the same thing.

  • TeakwoodKite

Yea, I bet they would use Gitmo for a private reserve, if they thought they could keep it classified long enough to get a pardon.

God speed to you and yours HH. You and yours and in my thoughts. Good to hear from y’all.

  • Ernest Hayman

One thing that I learned from the videos of Daval Patrick’s “words” speech is just how much better a public speaker he is then is Obama. I wonder if his foreign policy credentials could be better than Obama’s too.

One thing that I learned from Obama’s defense of his plagiarism is that he doesn’t respect the voter. His instance that the plagiarism is OK because Patrick allowed it misses the point. It’s not Patrick we are concerned about, but rather the voter who has been cheated of a true understanding of Candidate Obama.

  • Cee

Why is being critical construed as Hating Hillary?

last evening at the conclusion of the debate, and her great dignity and concern today for the officer’s family. She is someone to aspire to.

    Susan,

I agree. We should all show the same grace.

  • readerOfTeaLeaves

No doubt Hillary will be pilloried for canceling a speech that had obviously been important for her, and tending to a shocked family.

I hope every single pundit and blogger who smears Hillary Clinton for her decision to place more importance on that officer’s family and friends (than on her own campaign schedule) will shut up.

Any of us who have ever had “The Officers Show Up Unexpectedly At Your Door With Bad News” (and I suspect that there are millions of us) can probably appreciate Hillary Clinton’s decency in this difficult circumstance. I really, really feel for this officer’s family. They’re almost certainly going to be in pain a long time, and their lives are forever altered.

I’d love to see some of the Know-It-All Pundits show one tenth of Hillary Clinton’s human decency on this occasion.

Whether you support Obama, or McCain, or Huckabee, it might be wise to recognize that in a tragic circumstance, Sen Clinton has shown human decency to a family that must be in a state of absolute shock — they will be in shock for weeks and months to come.

This family’s hell is only starting.
At least Sen Clinton did what she could to acknowledge and respect their suffering at what is a horrendous time for this family.

More than that cannot be asked of anyone.
But it has nothing whatsoever to do with politics, or with elections.
