This is Ignore-The-Blacks “Shrub” Behavior, Barack

You’ll recall how, for years, President Bush has “shined on” invitations to speak at the annual NAACP convention, only this last year finally addressing the hugely influential, historic national organization. Now Barack Obama is “shining on” the national “State of the Black Union” founded by Tavis Smiley, and being carried LIVE on C-Span today. It is not insignificant that Smiley chose New Orleans for his annual gathering.

Who is the ONLY candidate — Republican or Democrat — who accepted Smiley’s invitation? Hillary Rodham Clinton, who speaks live to the group in a few hours, reports CNN. (I’ll keep tabs and will update this post to let you know when she’s about to speak. BUT, I’m listening now, and it’s truly fascinating — they just introduced major Hollywood director Jonathan Demme.) Barack Obama? CNN reports that Obama declined and offered to send Michelle, but Smiley told him that sending a surrogate is not enough and turned him down. Obama said he’s too busy campaigning in Texas and Ohio to bother with the national convention on black issues. That “bamboozler.”

By the way, Tavis Smiley has been subjected to extraordinary attacks and pressure for daring to support Sen. Hillary Clinton. I read about it at MyDD, and am glad that CNN repeated the story today.

Now, this is not an all-pro Hillary event. Michael Dyson is now speaking. He is, best I recall, an avid Obama supporter. [UPDATE: Now Jesse Jackson is speaking, and he is a Obama supporter (somewhat "tepid," though I've read), and his son is a national co-chair of Obama's campaign -- although Jesse Sr.'s wife is an avid Hillary supporter, and did a commercial for Hillary.] Smiley has no intention of making this about one candidate. He invited ALL of the candidates. Huckabee too. More from CNN International:

“I think it’s a missed opportunity on Mr. Obama’s part,” Smiley told CNN. “Now, I am not interested in demonizing him for his choice, but I do disagree with it.”

But Smiley’s criticism has also prompted many people to come to Obama’s defense. The talk show host told The Washington Post he has been inundated with angry e-mails and even death threats.

“I have family in Indianapolis. They are harassing my momma, harassing my brother. It’s getting to be crazy,” Smiley told the newspaper.

Think about that: Crazed Obama supporters searched nationwide for the phone numbers of Smiley’s elderly mother and his brother, and called them with harassing threats.

(It’s hardly a surprise to me, and everyone else who’s dared to criticize Obama. The hate mail, the nasty and sexist attacks in comments. They’re unbelievably and cruelly immature. This is MOB POLITICS. And it’s rank with bamboozling.)

It’s important to note, again, that Smiley selected New Orleans to give the struggling city support:

He will be busy despite Obama’s absence. Some of the nation’s top black activists and politicians attend the State of the Black Union.

Smiley said he picked New Orleans as the 2008 host city to highlight the continued plight of its residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“We owe it to them, those who survived, those who are still struggling to rebuild their lives,” Smiley said. “We owe it to them to raise these issues louder than ever.”

        Keep reading the comments of Mike Howell. He’s one of the people who claims to support Hillary.

        Also a campaign staff member sent out the following. The staff member was fired but the damage was done.

        It’s one of a couple Obama-Muslim-smear emails circulating widely, and one of the ones Jonathan Martin and I wrote about in October. It’s probably the most vicious of them: It states the underlying hint — that Obama is some sort of Muslim Manchurian candidate — explicitly.

        Let us all remain alert concerning Obama’s expected presidential candidacy.

        The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level – through the President of the United States , one of their own!!!!

        The email was sent by someone identified only as “Judy” whose email address begins jcheroke. The Clinton campaign has said they are now asking a volunteer county coordinator to leave the campaign when the email came to light.

        But the email thread indicates that along with Hart, a Clinton staffer named Ryan Callanan received the email back on November 21. Filings confirm that Callanan is a staffer, though I wasn’t able immediately to confirm his role on the Clinton campaign, and he didn’t respond to an email.

          A third volunteer for Hillary Clinton’s campaign was aware of a propaganda e-mail alleging that Barack Obama is a Muslim who plans on “destroying the U.S. from the inside out.”

          “Let us all remain alert concerning Obama’s expected presidential Candidacy,” the email reads. “Please forward to everyone you know. The Muslims have said they Plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out, what better way to start than at The highest level.”

          Two Clinton volunteers, Linda Olson and Judy Rose, have already been asked to resign from the campaign for their roles in forwarding the e-mail. The AP reported yesterday that Olson, a volunteer coordinator in Iowa County, sent a version of the e-mail to 11 people, including Ben Young, a regional field director for Chris Dodd’s campaign. Young passed it on to the AP.

          Rose, a Jones County coordinator, was forced out last week after the campaign learned that she’d forwarded a similar e-mail.

            The difference between the two candidates is that Hillary tries to keep her supporters from going “off the rails” and if she finds they are engaged in false, threatening or abusive behavior she tells them that’s not her campaign.

            The reason so many Hillary supporters are anti-Barack is because he allows his supporters to run rough-shod over anyone who isn’t for their candidate. The candidate talks hope and unity while his supporters knee-cap Hillary voters. It’s the most offensive thing I’ve ever seen. They say the actions of one’s supporters reflect the candidate…that’s why there are many dems who will not ever vote for Obama. They feel personally hurt and attacked by his supporters.

            I mean really, harassing Tavis Smiley’s family? Good lord.

              Neither Obama nor Clinton was my first, second or third choice. When Super Tuesday came and I had to make a choice, I went with Hillary in large part because of the absolute hatred being spewed by so many Obama supporters and by their willingness to tolerate misogyny if it advanced their candidates cause.           Far as I know, Smiley is building this new group. If it’s good enough for Jesse Jackson, Michael Dyson, Jonathan Demme, and Hillary Clinton (and a large number of others on the stage I haven’t heard introduced yet) to attend — and it’s helping the economy of New Orleans — and C-Span is broadcasting it LIVE nationwide (so all blacks in the nation can watch it) — it must have just an itty-bitty bit of significance.

Critics burned up Internet chat rooms, taking turns at denouncing Smiley. Pundit Melissa Harris-Lacewell, an Obama supporter, authored a biting anti-Smiley opinion on TheRoot.com (which is owned by Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive), entitled, “Who Died and Made Him King?”

              Obama’s campaign said he called Smiley twice on his cell and office phones. Smiley said he returned the calls but got no response.

              On the Tom Joyner Morning Show recently, Joyner brought up the controversy during an interview with Obama, relating how Smiley was taking heat for saying he thinks Obama doesn’t want to talk about issues black people care about.

              Obama chastised Smiley, but spoke as if the two were friends. “I’m going to have to call Tavis up and straighten him out on this,” Obama said. He said he’s addressed issues that Smiley cares about, such as health care and eliminating the legal sentencing disparity that allows judges to send mostly black crack cocaine offenders to prison with sentences that are five times longer than powder cocaine offenders who are mostly white and Latino.

              Obama followed up with a letter to Smiley, dated Feb. 13. In it, Obama explained why he declined the invitation, saying that he needed to campaign in states that Clinton must win to in order to topple her candidacy.

                There is historical precedence for this type of behavior, even Lincoln had to deal with it, narrowly being renominated for his second term.

                First of all I am going to help – a little.

                Most Indonsians ARE Muslims. They are pretty casual about their religion unless there is some kind of crises.

                Wahabism comes from Saudi Arabia.

                Maya, the half sister Obama is close with, told two different reporters that Obama considered himself to be a Muslim until he was 26 years old. That was when he met Jerimiah Wright from Trinty Church in Chicago and become Christian, but it IS a radical type of church he belongs to.

                One reporter is with a magazine associated with the NYT. The other is a British newspaper.

                Secondly – I LIKE Tavis Smiley and listen to his radio show weekly. Whether you realize it or not Tavis does a lot for AA’s. AS far as New Orleans goes, other than give one of his infamous speeches in August 2007 in NOLA, the ONLY other thing Obama did was to donate the fee he received from a speech at H & R Block in Chicago – it is listed in his tax returns. That is a tragedy – as Obama sits on the Homeland Security Committee, and people are DYING from living in Formaldehyde trailers, and yet Obama DOES nothing!

                Take a deep breath and re-read your comment just above. Sorry – but it is NUTS and hysterical!

      I don’t suppose you have been watching it today. It’s much more uplifting and relevant than anything I have heard come out of Obama’s mouth. They are talking about issues that should matter to any one who cares about the poor and poverty in this country whether the person is black or not.

      I can’t believe that Obama missed this opportunity. Surely he could have arranged his schedule to show up. I wouldn’t expect McCain to show up because I don’t expect his platform to be caring about the poor and poverty, let alone black. This to me, shows Obama’s opportunistic nature, he is happy to get the African American vote, but he leaves them by the wayside when they are having an event like this. I was absolutely stunned to hear he wasn’t attending.

      Every time I think, well maybe I can hold my nose and vote for him if he is the candidate he does something that completely destroys that thought.

    w/o knowing how the decision was made my impression is that barack erred. and it’s a “two-fer” or a “three-fer” he’s blowing off tavis. he’s also blowing off new orleans. he’s also blowing off the black community AND an organization that could be/is very beneficial to them.

            Huh? I guess I didn’t make my point: Obama is ALL about winning the election. Governance doesn’t hold much interest for him.

            Look up his failure to hold a single hearing as chair of the European Affairs subcommittee of the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Policy committee. Obama hasn’t even bothered to visit a single European country despite holding the position for over two years.

            Hell, last time I checked, Obama doesn’t even list the chairmanship on his U.S. Senate Web site. But he sures lists it on his “resume” on his campaign site.

            Many Senators have groused about Obama’s failure to learn the Senate rules…. truly shocking … I’m sure that Jim Webb, John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, et al. made that one of their first orders of business when they became senators. They’d be embarrrassed not to know the rules. That’s Senate 101 stuff.

            Ugh. He’s into making speeches. Not doing the hard work of the buck-stops-here administrative leadership.

              Also, this is very key. Major CA university study on internet communicating. Ballpark. Words on only 5% of communicating. Body language and tone of voice are the other 95%. Split about 60-40ish iirc.

              I also am having bad historical flashbacks lately wrt to woodrow wilson, and jimmy carter. (krugman’s art. was very good.) they were unknown on the nat’l scene and the powers that be (ptb) and the “men behind the curtain” got them into power and the results were bad for the party and the country. (in intensively studying amer. hist. these last 9 years i keep on seeing their handiwork. it’s ugly.) obama is very untested. the ptb wouldn’t be flogging him so hard unless they thought/knew he’ll play ball.

              it is my belief that obama is being pushed because the ptb was deathly afraid of edwards (bilderberg approved) and his 2 americas rhetoric. and they looked at hillary and said “what if she doesn’t get the nomination? who’s next in line? (edwards) oh sh*t.”

      Cee is correct. Rangel is trying to survive the next election so he’s decided to criticize Clinton to score points with his constituency. I find it sad that he is turning on her now that it looks like Obama might be the nominee. He wasn’t acting like that when Clinton was the frontrunner. I guess politicians are that way. They do whatever will get them elected in the next election and Rangel took a lot of heat at first for supporting Clinton over the black candidate.

    Some of the folks there were besides themselves, and frankly, were childish about it, even saying that he should have put off his presidential announcement to be there.
    As an aside, when I asked my radio listeners on WVON in Chicago if Obama should skip the event, we got 29 calls in two hours, and only two said he should go. And this is a crowd that is normally in agreement with Smiley.

    “Mob politics” sure is an accurate term. I had to caucus for Hillary and it wasn’t pretty.

    As usual if you point out the fact that Obama didn’t show up, people will just attack the State of the Black Union instead. They aren’t “worthy” of his majesty’s attention. They haven’t accomplished enough, they aren’t important enough.

    Obama was busy campaigning and couldn’t vote on the waterboarding ban. People tell me that’s okay, it wasn’t an important bill, not like the telecom immunity that Hillary didn’t vote on. Now that was an important one. Banning torture? No big deal.

      Several things struck me about this decision.

      One, he won Louisiana by a significant margin, included in which was a huge percentage of black voters; at a minimum, attending the forum would be an acknowledgment and an appreciation of that support.

      Two, that it is being carried on C-SPAN means that he could have been reaching out to a nationwide audience.

      Three, that we already have a president who is more interested in adoring crowds than in governance, and another would be a disaster.

      Four, I’ve been saying for some time now that Obama would end up being a Jimmy Carter president, whose promise of coming together and healing would die a painful death while absolutely nothing meaningful gets done in DC. Obama would be a one-term president, who would drive a loss of Dems in the 2010 mid-terms, and hand the WH off to the GOP in 2012.

      Finally, don’t Obama supporters ever get tired of having to justify the actions and words of their candidate? The convoluted logic and rationalizations are laughable – as laughable as any of the justifications given by those who support Bush, for crying out loud.

      I read that his high school teachers doubted comments about cocaine in Hawaii at the time that Obama was there. It didn’t ring true. In the late 70′s students in his privileged school did not take coke. Was he speaking about another time?

    Grace – don’t get your hopes up. It’s already been coming out that the alleged drug use Obama writes about wasn’t nearly what he claimed it was. The only reason I can think why he would have exaggerated his drug use is because it makes the trajectory of his life seem so much more meaningful and inspiring. And what could be the reason for doing that? Why would a relatively ordinary guy want to look extraordinary? Because ordinary people don’t get to run for president in this day and age, that’s why.

    Looking at the whole thing, this man oozes ambition from every pore – personal ambition. Me, me, me, me, me. There will be no serving the public from this man – only the public serving his own ambition.

    i think the reason obama “exaggerated” his teenage drug use was to give himself some sort of moral cover (in his own mind) for his adult drug use…this way he can say ” look i told the world i did drugs” as if he was always upfront, and he will never say “i smoked crack while i was in the Illinois State Senate”, he thinks the exaggerated admission of drug use as a teenager should give him a clean slate for the rest of his “sins”…i am so happy the globe is covering it…now let’s see if MSNBC will cover it.

    I don’t put any credence in that tabloid story but you know if it was about Bill or Hillary, the media would have been all over it by now. Clinton rules, don’t you know.

    Because Obama is an African-American, he gets a free pass because it would be considered “racist” to write about it. Even in the context of “look at this ugly and obviously false rumor”, it would be seen as “racist”.

    I’ve been thinking about this morning….

    Perhaps Barack and MIchelle know they have the black vote wrapped up. Why preach to the choir, so to speak? Normally, for him to pass on this would mean political self-damage. But my impression is that this won’t hurt Barack, at all. Because of his father being black, the demographic groups he’s gotten the huge majorities from will continue to support him. For a lot of his supporters, having a person with darker skin in office is the ‘dream’ they want to see realized, whatever the cost.

    So, Hillary needs to try to get votes from this demographic, just as Obama might need to shore up votes from the MidWest-type Ohio demographic.

    If Tavis wanted to make an issue of this, he’d have held the event earlier, like before the bigger primaries. Perhaps he planned it this late because he thought the the HRC candidacy was inevitable, and having a ‘black’ event would bolster support for Barack, if he needed it. /tinfoil

      I remember reading at that time one of the main reasons AIDS rates were so high in the AA community was a reluctance to personally admit to homosexual behavior, therefore, the reluctance to take protective measures, resulting in infection.

      The belief being use of a condom is to personally admit to being homosexual, whereas NOT using one allows the individual his illusion of heterosexuality.

              The Obama supporters are dragging up Hillary shit going back to when she took her first step. And Bill’s. They are leaving nothing unturned, including the debunked stuff. They call her evil, Satan, greedy, dangerous, and insult her clothing, hair and ankles. They’re mocking Bill Clinton – no, they’re punching him in the gut. Bill Clinton! They’re circulating Hillary parodies. They’re saying she and Bill stole a lot of money and are going to be arrested. They misrepesent her vote on the war – some are so far gone they think he VOTED no!

              I dropped into a particular large site after the debates. All manner of ugly was going on. It was shocking, and gave me a headache. Yesterday, I braved another look at the site, deciding only to read a blog by John Ridley and its (screened) comments. I noticed that none of the Obama supporters could present a reasoned argument on the most basic point, and there seemed to be an increase of Obama critics.

              Apart from a handful, I find true Hillary supporters and Obama-busters I come across on-line to be civil and well-informed. This awful sinclair stuff grosses me out and I really wish no-one would ever bring it up again. I try to tamp it down whenever I come across it. A read of Taylor Marsh’s site is an excellent insight into the reasoning and m.o. of an anti-Obama or pro-Hillary person. There are plenty of refugess from hostile Obama sites there.

                You’re right. It IS happening on practically every site, no matter which side people are on, and I hate it. The trashing of Bill Clinton’s presidential legacy is so far removed from reality I can’t abide it. Obama supporters just sit there dumbfounded when you ask them why they wouldn’t want to return to the strongest economy since the 1950′s, a huge surplus, 20 million jobs created, entrepreneurship at it’s peak, etc etc etc. They can’t fathom it because they either don’t remember it (they were in elementary school at the time) or they simply refuse to remember it.

                But the trashing of both candidates — in the most personal, vicious ways — is immature, short-sighted and utterly counterproductive. The tabloid slurs I’m seeing against Obama are over the line.

                I’m not bitter that Edwards didn’t make it, I’m just sad about it. I really think he understands what is wrong with this country and has some good working ideas on how to start fixing it. But I sure as hell don’t want to see McCain get the White House because we won’t be able to survive that. Not after the last eight years of crime and corruption from the Bush mob.

                I cringe when Obama supporters refuse to vote for Hillary in November, the same way I cringe when her supporters refuse to vote for him.

                People don’t seem to understand the concept of the Big Picture anymore.

                  I was rooting for Edwards as well. It seems like the moment he suspended, all hell broke loose.

                  The attacks on the Clintons are really surprising to me, especially since the most vicious come from those who would defend them tooth and nail a year ago. And these attacks are almost always delivered as a reply to a suggestion that Obama be held up to the light. I can’t understand the reluctance to vote for Hillary. I just can’t. I do, however, completely understand the reluctance to get behind Barack.

                  Perhaps the Big Picture is too abstract. Perhaps America wasn’t quite ready for this.

                  I’m hoping Edwards has suspended and not endorsed is because he knows something…

            His/her opinion re: wanting to silence someone who goes out of their way to be obnoxious all the time is rational.

    I’m new here but I wrote about this on my own blog the morning Tavis announces that Hillary was the only candidate who had accepted the invitation. The blind ambition by so many of my people to get this guy elected is deplorable.

    CES, you mentioned that Obama might not need to show up because he’s got the black vote sewn up and that’s pretty much the case. BUT how about showing up because you are actually concerned? He’s been wooing blacks for support but he couldn’t find a few hours to show up at this event?? Hillary is the one who is in the fight of her political and yet she has the class and true leadership skills to know to do the right thing. Obama is a big fraud. It is indeed tough being a black Hillary supporter but I remind myself of Hillary’s daily trials and I quickly get over it.

      Right, I didn’t say I agreed with or support Obama. I should have said that it’s my belief that this is his campaign’s tactic to this event.

      If he preaches to the choir, he won’t get any votes he hadn’t already ‘won’.

      But if he goes to Ohio, he might get more votes than had he gone to NO.

      It’s my belief, after looking at his record with an open but critical eye, is that he hasn’t done much for the vast majority of those who are now so blindly voting for him in record percentages. Part of our thread here today is BO’s (or maybe his wife’s?) drive just to win. I think it’s appalling to sell yourself for something you’re not. And no amount of ‘code words’ or recycled beltway rhetoric will change his record. But it gets him votes…oh boy, has it.

      And what’s even more disgusting to me, is that this is the same bloody tactic that W and his Brain used in ’00 and ’04. And yet those who are fainting at his speeches just don’t get it. Or don’t care. It’s hip to vote for the AA.

    Obama does not want to be black on the eve of the Texas primary.

    He will get 80% of the black vote regardless, it’s a racial vote.

    He will only get the yuppie 20% of the white vote unless he downplays being black, that’s a racial vote too.

    I don’t particularly like Clinton. I like Obama less. I likw him less for 3 reasons. A. he has a lot of ideas and no details on how he is to achieve them. B. When all of the candidates were asked a set of questions (late last year, I think), he took a long paragraph to answer a yes/no question. Which makes me ask “what isn’t he telling us?” And C. his supporters do not answer questions about him. They attack the questioner. How can we trust somebody like that? We’ve had Mr. “trust me” for 7+ years now, and see what we got for it.
    I would think that Cee is the reincarnation of Lewis Carroll, except that Carroll was a better writer.

    I’ve got to say, Michael Steele at the Black State of the Union is saying the things I’ve been aching for Obama to say – that this generation is benefiting from the sacrifices of MLK, etc. I see Obama dance up to this and never quite say it.

    Tavis says – media loves to build people up then tear them down. What is going to happen now.

      Michael Steele said that? Well, I’ll be damned. That SOB has never made sense before — not while he was our Lieutenant Governor and certainly not while running for senate here. In fact, Steele reminds me strongly of Obama: short on experience, long on bullshit.

      Steele’s senate campaign even mirrored Obama’s in interesting ways. He also appealed to people from the other party to vote for him and went after the Black vote with a combination of guilt trips, deception and outright intimidation. Steele was a republican, but posted signs in heavily Black areas that said “Steele” (in large letters) “Democrat” (in smaller letters below). He also tried to pimp charges of racism during his campaign, astonishingly against Blacks as well as whites, while saying nothing when the governor went to a segregated country club.

    trent lott resigned, and is not running for president. trent lott didn’t take a “reformed gay” minister on tour with him….and as far as i know…trent lott didn’t smoke Crack in the back of a limo while getting oral sex from a known drug dealer….i can just see the republican attack ads now..”DO YOU WANT THE WHITE HOUSE TO BE KNOWN AS THE CRACK HOUSE” wake up people…the real story or test isn’t what barack obama is being accused of, it will be how he responds to tough questions about it.

      Other than proving he is a cheat, the Sex part does not bother me that much. What kind of sex he prefers is none of my business – the fact he lies about it speaks to lack of character and JUDGEMENT!

      However, the CRACK part scares the living crap out of me. We currently have a supposedly reformed Cocaine user in the WH now – and supposedly he has been clean for 20+ years.

      It is my understanding that CRACK is worse than Cocaine, and the effects are horrifying.

      Further, it is is only a few years back, not 20+ years, and NO Rehab done. Do we really want someone who is a CRACK HEAD running this country? As it is the Europeans are at a minimum VERY uneasy about this guy. What will they think/do when they find out he is a CRACK HEAD? So much for NATO and US security, never mind any domestic policies.
