chicken nugget emergency

One of our NQ readers commented the other week that Ventura City was going to start charging for 911 calls. The first call is free, but it would cost money for the subsequent phone calls.

I think I know why…

chicken-nuggetAngered that her local McDonald’s was out of Chicken McNuggets, a Florida woman called 911 three times to report the fast food “emergency.” Latreasa Goodman, 27, last Saturday called police to complain that a cashier–citing a McDonald’s all sales are final policy–would not give her a refund. When cops responded to the restaurant, Goodman told them, “This is an emergency. If I would have known they didn’t have McNuggets, I wouldn’t have given my money, and now she wants to give me a McDouble, but I don’t want one.” Goodman noted, “I called 911 because I couldn’t get a refund, and I wanted my McNuggets,” according to the below Fort Pierce Police Department report. That logic, however, did not keep cops from citing Goodman for misusing the 911 system. Even after being issued a misdemeanor citation, Goodman contended, “this is an emergency, my McNuggets are an emergency.”

The McDonald’s devotee is seen at right in a mug shot snapped after a previous encounter with police. Last month, a Florida man was arrested after he called 911 to complain about his displeasure with a Burger King combo meal.

I’ve heard of Big Mac attacks, but do they really qualify as an emergency?

  • samb

I didn’t know that Mcee Dees could ever run out of nuggets, being that card board is so abundant.

    • Jaycephus

Reminds me of the joke: There’s a bunch of molds in the back of McDonald’s and a worker just squirts a special ‘sauce’ from a big vat into each mold. “Big Mac” squirt… “Chicken McNuggets” squirt… “Styrofoam Container” squirt

  • wodiej

well what do we expect from people who voted for Obama. Maybe she should have called him instead since they think he’s going to fill up their gas tanks and pay their mortgage too.

    • TorchWood

      Damn, that was cold…

I was thinking the same thing though.

    • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

we don’t know that she voted…or for who.

      • http://firefox AnnieCollier

She does fit the profile of a bot though doesn’t she?

    • Jaycephus

I was once very poor and lived in an efficiency next to a woman who liked to call 911 in the middle of the night. I’d wake up from the sirens and flashing lights. One night, the paramedic or fireman knocked on my door, thinking the call had come from my apartment. The woman next to me opened her door, and I heard her ask the paramedics to bring her some juice and crackers from the store.

Of course she was touched. She once asked me to park my old, broken-down red Mustang somewhere-else because it was evil, and she told me that I was not permitted to listen to her piano-playing through our shared wall because it was only meant for God.

    • jaycp

dont get mad cause we got obama, and yall stuck to look at an african american for 8 years lol

  • beebop

Hey!!!! You leave my girl Latreasa alone! She’s just tryin’ to eat healthy and didn’t want any nasty cheeseburger! :)

  • Peggy Sue

Wow! I never thought about calling 911 when my local KFC ran out of chicken.

This woman should be fined for the frivolous call. I mean are people really this stupid to tie up an emergency line with utter nonsense?

And so, if there are limits placed on the 911 system, a fee for multiple calls, we know who to blame: the Latreasa Goodman’s of the world.

Responsibile behavior. I guess Latreasa never heard of it!

This would be funny, AGI, if it weren’t so sad. “Gimme, gimme. I want it now. I’ve been wronged.”

It’s the mentality of a spoiled child.

    • wodiej

yes, people really are that stupid! Maybe she should have called the great and powerful Oz and he could have gotten her a years worth of the Nuggets free. They think he’s going to fill up their gas tanks and pay their mortgages.

      • Larry the Lamb

I wonder why the picture of the picture of Goodman was used and not that of Fortune, the Florida man? Nope. No idea.

Can not get any more stupid than the story of how the brother of John McCain phoned 911 to demand the police help him out of a traffic jam.

        Stupid Republicans.

        • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

her photo was used because it was available. Fortunes wasn’t. Her photo was available because it is her mug shot that was already on file.

and yes, mccain’s brothers call was stupid.

        • Peggy Sue

Yes, if John McCain’s brother called 911 because of a traffic jam then that, too, was equally stupid.

Stupid is as stupid does. I think there’s a lot of stupidity in both Dems and Repugs. But I think AGI’s article was in response to people wailing about changes in the 911 guidelines: first call, no charge; additional charges, a fee applied.

Both examples illustrate total irresponsibility. There’s a lot to go around!! And the general public will ultimately pay for it.

          As always.

So Republicans are stupid because of the act of one person. I guess that makes Democrats really stupid because of the collective act of 69,000,000.

Your logic, not mine and you lose. Don’t bother trying again, troll.

          • Helen Ka

Republicans are stupid because they voted for Bush twice and then wanted Palin near the Whitehouse.

WOMEN WITH INTELLIGENCE AND EXPERIENCE, MEN WHO SUPPORT THEM AND COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY ALWAYS, SUPPORT OBAMA.

PUMAS FREEPERS REPUBLICANS AND THOSE PEOPLE LOST

            • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

democrats are stupid because they couldn’t beat Bush, twice. They couldn’t offer up a decent candidate to go against Bush. They couldn’t get the dems out to vote, to defeat Bush in 2004.

and the dems are stupid for pissing on a successful female candidate – twice.

Bush/Oblahblah-two sides of the same dirty coin with bots for supporters. I didn’t like Bush and I *really* dislike That One.

There is so much blame to spread around that the blame-shifting becomes a pointless exercise in one-upmanship, gets us nowhere, and perpetuates the same old shit.

Before blaming Republicans and/or Democrats, perhaps we should place the blame where it really belongs–with the electorate.

When the times comes that public has had enough of partisan bickering will be the time the country starts back on the right track.

My question is how That One is also going to do their work for them, too, as he doesn’t seem to have enough time to do his own with all the parties he’s having. I guess the schedule will just shift to the right a bit.

      • beebop

  • Pat Racimora

This story makes you laugh (sarcastically) on the one hand, but it is a big deal on the other.

Last month I was driving on Highway 17 from Santa Cruz to San Jose (anyone who has done this will see the picture clearly–narrow two lane winding mountain highway with cars whizzing around curves) and came upon a full-size basketball hoop in the middle of one lane. Fortunately no one was in the other lane and swerved to barely miss it. But I heard screeching behind me. There is no place to stop (again, someone back me up here!) and so I had to wait until I got almost to the bottom the hill to pull over and call 911. People could easily be killed.

The first 4 times I tried, the line was busy. The 5th time it rang 12 times, a recording came on and said all operators were busy but to hang on. I waited for a good 4 additional minutes before someone took the report.

I don’t know if anyone was hurt or how the thing got removed (it was not there when I came back over the hill later that day), but the experience was upsetting. The main message I got was, “We are all pretty much on our own.”

    • Karma

That is a bad road for any type of large debris to be on. Very scary.

There are very few places to pull over on Highway 17. Like you said, often the cars are whizzing side-by-side even through the blind curves. So, usually there is no chance to even pull over into the other lane to avoid debris.

Just for go measure the car behind you is often right on your bumper. So any quick stops and you will probably be hit from behind. And some of the locals drive aggressively and defensively against idiots and travelers looking to have road rally racing fun. Which provides a couple extra layers of weirdness on a road banked for drainage not cars.

You were really lucky to have that free lane! And I agree, there is nothing you could do but get down the hill to call. Must have been a long drive with your ears listening for more tire screeching.

      Stay safe!

I miss living in Santa Cruz….saw your post and started to remember those thin lightly seasoned tortilla chips in the orange bags. Can’t remember the name of them but used to make fresh salsa for them….yum.

      • Pat Racimora

Karma–Thanks for backing me up regarding Highway 17. It really is dangerous. Yes, strange drivers–I didn’t mention them! Sometimes I think they are so anxious to get to the beach that they aren’t tuned in.

        AND,
The Mexican food here is really good, but I am not familiar with those chips!

        • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

it is a beautiful drive, but very dangerous indeed! be careful out there!

        • Karma

          Pat

Happy to help. It is an unusual road with a lot of challenges…debris in the road is among the worst. I remember many trips over the hill where a crawling VW bus w/35hp or a stalled vehicle was the obstacle around the blind corner. It will take your breath away.

Good point about the drivers being anxious about getting to the beach.

I agree, the Mexican food is great, several of my favorite places to eat are out your way. Sorry, it took a while to response, I was trying to find the chips online before answering. No luck…well maybe a contender but the bag was different. Guess I will have to take a road trip. ;)

          • Karma

OT, but I have been to many, many states and the one thing that always sticks out in my mind about California is how there is often large junk on the highways (huge boxes, planks & couches are some things I’ve seen). No kidding–and it’s so dangerous. Why is that?

      • Pat Racimora

I think that people in California move aruond a lot, and the weather is usually nice so they tie a lot of stuff to the top of their car or toss it in the back of a pickup. They know little about aerodynamics and are surprised when they stop to look at that couch just isn’t there.

        • http://firefox AnnieCollier

We do move around a lot. I remember always driving 17 from the East Bay to Big Sur on Friday nights after work in my Bug. I’d whizz down 17 to Hwy 1 in 2 hours sometimes…no need to lose hours out of the weekend!

Last time I drove it was about a year ago going to SF (on the advise of my then boss) and I was horrified. Just as you pointed out, cars coming at you, around you, and right on your bumper. NO place to go if you had an emergency. I felt like driving with my flashers on.

    • Baba Rum Raisin

      >>> What’s the politically correct word?

      “Dipshit” works for me.

Dipshittery is no respecter of race, creed, gender, national origin, etc.

    • Ferd Berfle

Or as That One blathered since his brain is missing, “I don’t know no better. It is above my pay-grade”.

  • Palm Tree

This is kind of sad – the woman seemed to think she had a matter for the police, and that 911 was the way to contact them.

She seemed to really have no understanding of her error.

Maybe we need public service announcements on the teevee explaining the proper use of 911. It could be used to educate children as well as pitifully uninformed adults.

  • Benjamin

I considered dialing 911 the night Obama got elected. I was having a panic attack of “historic” proportions.

  • Honora

Palm Tree I agree with you. Why did the McDonalds not refund the woman’s money? She is right that she was wronged. If she had stolen the mcnuggets, the McDonalds would have called 911 and gotten her arrested. The woman was wrong to call 911, but most people do not know how else to contact the police.

    • beebop

citing a McDonald’s all sales are final policy–would not give her a refund

      Reading comprehension …..

There are rules. She needs to learn to follow them.

  • Anon

Let me guess, she voted for OBAMA.

  • JozefAL

Why in the world would the McDonalds cashier have taken an order for something the store was out of? I’ve been to fast food restaurants and I’ve ordered an item from the menu only to be told if the item was out. Granted, this has been very rare but money has NEVER changed hands before I’ve been told the product was out.
As to the “all sales are final” excuse, that doesn’t wash. The woman should have demanded to see the store manager (or the manager on duty) to resolve the situation (and I doubt the manager would have tried the “all sales are final” excuse–that sounds to me more like a cashier didn’t want to go through an overring/override procedure). If the cashier took money before learning there were no more McNuggets, then there was no “real” sale, and if the cashier took the money knowing that there were no more McNuggets, then the cashier was committing fraud. If the store manager failed to resolve the situation, then contacting corporate HQ would have been the next step (even independent franchises have to accept certain guidelines by the McDonalds corporation in order to retain the rights to using the company name).
Calling 9-1-1, however, is completely inexcusable in this case. I would suggest, however, that cities, instead of charging for 9-1-1 calls, just arrest the people who abuse the system. (Maybe a stern warning on the first fraud call, a hefty fine–upwards of $100–on a second one, and a mandatory 30 days in jail for a third fraudulent call. And these punishments are not “forgiven” within a period of time. The fraudulent calls are kept on a permanent record with the city’s criminal courts division and whether the second fraudulent call comes 1 day or 10 years after the first, the punishment remains the same. There should be absolutely ZERO tolerance regarding abuse of the 9-1-1 system.)

What black man? I thought they put Barry Soertoro, aka Barack Hussein Obama, of the mostly Arab Kenyan Obamas, in Our White House. You know, the one they say is a dual citizen born in Kenya to a white mother who allowed him to be adopted by her Indonesian Muslim husband. Can’t get much more “melting pot” than that so why are you dissing his other ethnicities?

      • beebop

Oh come on, he’s black … his white mother is dead and you never ever even saw him with his white grand mother. The dude is black.

        • Publius

Yeah, what she/he said! You never even saw him with his white grandmother, so in the whole, like, biological scheme of things, that doesn’t even count. Because it’s like Schroedinger’s Cat and stuff. If you don’t see a black guy with his white relatives, then it’s like they don’t even exist! So he’s black, like that Santa Claus they had that one year at the store, that year I complained. I marched myself right up to that store manager, and I said, “Do you have another one? You know, one that’s white? White like us?” Because when it comes to colored skin, like I said, we know black when we see it. People like me and beebop, and Harriet Christian.

You see, it isn’t the WHITE side that got him elected now, is it … 90+% didn’t vote for the good people from Kansas or the ads that showed nothing but white faces did they? Uh huh. She is a bit more crafty…asking for a manager at McD’s is more complicated than dialing 911 but hey, they’re both dumb as rocks. Then there’s Octomom’s 911 “I’m going to kill myself” call. Yeah, mentally challenged. Both.

  • gonzotx

we should never charge for 911 calls. However, you are right, most people don’t know their local police #’s and think 911 is for everything.

  • tango

I think calling 911 for this reason is abusing the emergency system. Better to call the local police but like most of us, we don’t have that number handy.

I am certainly not one who feels the customer is always right but in this case, I side with Ms. Goodman. She ordered and paid for Chicken Nuggets. When McDonalds said they were out, they should’ve allowed her to CHOOSE what she wanted to eat as a replacement OR refunded her money right off the bat. If it cost less, too bad. Refund the difference since it’s your fault you’re out of nuggets. If what she wants instead costs more, then write off the difference.

Don’t tell me the manager couldn’t refund those few dollars. And if he really didn’t want to he could’ve still worked with her somehow in the name of good customer service. I’m sure a small gift certificate or a future free meal or even a free sandwich might have been enough to make her say sure, ok, I’ll take this sandwhich instead.

no doubt she was not treated well at McD’s, and she should have talked to the manager. if the issues wasn’t resolved, she should have called info, for the number of the police, if she wanted.

But she called 911 THREE times.

If I found out I couldn’t reach 911 because someone called three times over chicen nuggets, I think I would be a little pissed.

She was given an alternative solution. They have a ” McDonald’s all sales are final policy.”

Did she suddenly need to make a phone call?
Did she suddenly need to catch a bus?
Did she suddenly need money for a medical procedure?

        Hell.

She got the exact same treatment that everyone receives at this MacDonald’s … and unless Pubiclis can prove that it was in a WHITE neighborhood and she was the victim of UNMITIGATED RACISM this woman needs to get a grip … it’s fat, fat, fat … oh, and oil.

Jesus. And He died for this bullsh*t?

This story has been all over the news. This tells you how concerned the news media is about our bigger problems.

I might have called the police also, but not via 911. It’s obviously easier to get ahold of the police via 911, but she was within her rights to get the police involved. She just needed to call the regular police number, if she knew it.

I wouldn’t have stood for a no-refund policy if they were out of the product.

She and anyone else who abuses the 911 system should be fined.

The best solution was mentioned above: talk to the manager.

Coincidentally, I tried to buy chicken at KFC recently and they were out. It would be a 20 minute wait. I drove to another KFC and they were out too. I went back to the original KFC and went inside to complain to the manager.

The manager knew I had been there earlier and had left. She gave me an extra piece of chicken and also reduced the total price. It took about an hour to get my 3 (now 4 pieces of chicken) but the manager did right by me.

But I never thought about calling the police over some chicken.

the only thing worse than not having chicken nuggets is having chicken nuggets… with no BBQ sauce

  • Madison

I guess Many doesn’t have the brains to think……what 911 is for..and it’s not for a big Mac attack-not for “Chicken nuggets..Hey, did she ever think to use the number listed inside or out side the window to the corp office to make a complaint ? No…now I say that’s someone who has mashed potatoes for brains ! REALLY !!!!

  • Idiocracy08

They’re talking about charging like that near San Antonio. I don’t think it’s fair. What if you live in a bad neighborhood and need to call 911 more than once? I could see being charged for those that are not emergencies, but not if it’s legit.

I think they should have a number like countrywide 811 (or whatever) that is a non-emergeny number. Then people (especially if you’re out of town) wouldn’t have to look up the number for that area. If you’re in a big city, a main dispatcher could connect you. But that would make too much sense in today’s world. Can’t have that.

    • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

I have a feeling that people who make legit calls would not end up being charged… It is probably to stop people from making non-emrgency calls to 911.

But, I agree that there should be a non-emergency easy number to call. One that would take you to a dispatcher, maybe, and you can say where you are, and what you need, whether it be sheriff, fire dept, etc. It can be a pain in the butt trying to figure out who to call sometimes.

The problem I have with this is the way that this story has gone viral. The impression is that she called 911 because McDonald’s ran out of Chicken McNuggets when in reality, she called 911 because she wanted a refund because there was nothing else on the menu that she wanted.

Is that really so difficult to understand? Suppose she is a vegetarian and doesn’t eat meat? Suppose this was her last money and she wanted to go elsewhere and spend it on something else?

Although I agree that people call 911 for all sorts of absurd reasons and that it would be better for folks not to clog emergency lines with non-emergencies. But she did need a policeman or someone in authority to intercede on her behalf to get her money back. Flagging down a police car or calling the nearest police station is an option to putting a call into 911. Here in NYC we have a 311 number that people are encouraged to call for non-emergency assistance.

It’s a good idea to ALWAYS know the refund policy wherever you are doing business in order to avoid such conflicts. To me, the manager of the store was silly not to refund her money if she didn’t want something else. If she then chose to call 911 to complain about there not being any McNuggets, then certainly that is stupid.

But the woman really wanted her money back. It’s a shame that she didn’t simply explain it that way. But that’s what happens when people are inarticulate and unable to communicate coherently in the English language.

Had she simply said to the officers who arrived on the scene something like,

“I want my money refunded, because they are out of the item I wanted and there is nothing else on the menu that I find suitable. I need my money to go elsewhere in order to purchase something more preferable.”

What’s really sad is that before McDonald’s collects your money at the counter, you HAVE to give them your order. Then they tally your bill and collect the money. If they collected her money without knowing that the item she wanted had run out, by all means, they should have refunded her money.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m uncomfortable with the concept that an establishment would tell me that I HAVE TO ACCEPT another item on their menu because of their NO REFUND POLICY! Excuse me, but that simply sucks!

This woman is being made fun of unneccesarily and rather unfairly because she simply doesn’t have the communication skills to have plead her own case.

    • beebop

      Please go to smoking gun.

This woman WASTED valuable, well trained public resources on THREE SEPARATE CALLS to discuss Chicken McNuggets.

Do you know how many REAL emergencies there are? Each and every day? Real emergencies that actually need 911. Yes. We are making fun of her. She has not one critical thinking skill to call her own. She should be an example of WHO NOT TO BE.

Please. Save your sympathy for someone who is DESERVING OF IT .. she is not.

    • beebop

don’t know about anyone else, but I’m uncomfortable with the concept that an establishment would tell me that I HAVE TO ACCEPT another item on their menu because of their NO REFUND POLICY! Excuse me, but that simply sucks!

You have a choice in America. It is called next time, eat some where else. When someone has a true emergency and needs assistance? They only have one place to call … it is 911. This person is a disgrace.

    • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

why do you think she is lacking the communication skills necessary to communicate effectively? She is American.

When told there were no chicken nuggets, she said to give her a McDouble, and small fry, and the change difference. They said they couldn’t give her change back, but she could choose something else to equal the value. So, she is not a vegetarian.

She is being made fun of because she called 911 at least THREE times over chicken nuggets. (it actualy sounds like four times in the video)

I suspect they have a no refund policy because of fear of opening the register back up, and getting scammed – people who pull those change scams. The photo of her above is an old mug shot…perhaps she has a habit of scamming fast food restaurants.

Suppose she is a vegetarian and doesn’t eat meat?

Chicken is meat. Vegetarian means no flesh. And, yes you’re missing the point. The woman has no common sense much less education past 4th grade.

  • greg

    To mimi:
Nice try, your point doesn’t cut it. This woman has a civil issue, not a police issue. Your point illustrastes what is wrong with a small majority of society today. Call the police for everything, because nothing goes their way ! Quit abusing the system !!
