Avon Global Ambassador Reese Witherspoon spoke during the Global Forum for Women and Justice today in Washington, D.C. One in three women is a victim of domestic violence. “That’s pretty much everyone we know.”

“I am very excited to be partnering with Avon. Avon is more than an iconic world class beauty leader — it is a company that is known the world over as a crusader for women’s causes,” said Ms. Witherspoon. “I am truly impressed by how Avon has been able to effect real change in the communities in which it does business, and by how committed the company is to providing economic and personal fulfillment to women all over the world. I feel a great responsibility in my own life to give back to society. Now, as the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, I am proud to be joining in the great philanthropic work that is already underway.”

Speak out against domestic violence.

Love Reese Witherspoon, a total class act. Glad to see her speaking out on this important issue that is not taken seriously by law enforcement and States’ Attorney in this country.

All of Hollywood needs to take lessons from this one.

I agree with both of you. I just adore her.

Me, too. She is definitely a class act, and very gracious. I sure hope her work with Avon will help to bring attention to this issue…

I have to say, Avon does some pretty awesome work on behalf of women. In addition to domestic violence, they do work on breast cancer, too. And they are run by a woman.

This past election season seemed to begin Open Season on Women. Domestic violence is on the rise. I hope more women who have access to microphones speak out on this. In the meantime, thank heavens Reese is.

Amen. Go Reese. The more effective representatives we have drawing attention to this critical issue, the better.

And let us commemorate three of the great characters Reese Witherspoon portrayed in film: Tracy Flick in Election, Elle Wood in Legally Blonde, and Vanessa Lutz in Freeway: three resourceful characters who would not take crap off of ANYBODY!

And thank you, AGII, for reporting this!

Risk of domestic abuse of women under Islam is all too often a death sentence.

It’s not too much better in India, or Africa, or South and Central America or in Asia…I don’t wanna’ say all men suck or anything like that…’cause that would paint all men with that nasty broad brush.

      • Ferd Berfle

Thank you, Strawberry. There are a few gentlemen left on the planet.

Go Reese! I like it when stars stick to issues rather than politics.

    Excellent post AGII -

Bravo to Reese and Avon. Great combination of product, person and issue. And it couldn’t be more timely. I do think the interviewer had a point. We need men to be deeply involved in the cause and show visible signs of solidarity. After all – they are the perpetrators for the most part.

There can’t be enough said about this topic but I question this math:

One in three women is a victim of domestic violence. “That’s pretty much everyone we know.”

    • Ani

I think she meant to say that most everyone knows someone who is a victim of domestic violence or has been on the receiving end of this themselves. This may have been phrased awkwardly, but I am sure we would all agree that the violence against is far too widespread.

That it happens at all is a travesty.

Though we used to make fun of Avon ladies as teenagers, I do remember my own mother’s delight when the Avon lady showed up at our door, which was seven miles out in the country on a dirt road. It was a chance to talk to another woman, to buy something for herself along with stuff for us. What a great way to get information out to women all over America. I am betting there are many Avon ladies who have suspected that their customers may be abused either emotionally or physically. They often see them in their homes.

Good idea, Avon! And Reese is a great spokesperson for this.

    • elise

Yes, Diana, I heard that too. “An army of Avon Ladies”. It’s a wonderful idea.

  • Carol HAKA

    Bravo!

  • EWard

Kudos to Reese and Avon! She’s a great role model for women.

Avon has chosen a lovely spokeswoman and it gives me a sense of hope domestic violence will be given the exposure it so badly needs. As Ms Witherspoon said, this crosses all social and economic barriers around the world and ABC called attention to Chris Brown’s recent arrest for battery against his girlfriend, Rihanna. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, AGII
