Williams Settles Obama Photo Dust-Up — Remember Obama Attack on Clinton re Bhutto [UPDATED x2]

UPDATE: Jerome Armstrong takes down the “progressive” bloggers who’ve bought Drudge’s allegation that Clinton’s people pushed this photograph. (Half the people posting comments in my diary on this at MyDD are doing the “when did you stop beating your wife” thing, and apparently believe that you’re guilty until you’re proven innocent.) Armstrong adds, “Drudge is a pox on the house of Democrats. It is a rightwing crap site that spews rumors designed to tear democrats down and divide us.” REMEMBER that it is the OBAMA CAMPAIGN that is pushing the Drudge version of the story. – SusanUnPC

UPDATE x2: From a friend, “It just occurred to me that today is the day that the Rezko trial is supposed to start [must check that -- today IS the day, but I think it may have been delayed, also interesting]. It’s at least likely that their campaign put that out, and threw a huge tantrum to a) distract from Hillary [and her major foreign policy address today] and the issues of healthcare and trade, b) distract cables from covering Rezko. Because, you know, if it’s a slow news day, they may run a lot of Rezko. But now, the beast has been fed, and is happy.” – SusanUnPC x2

Statement by Maggie Williams, Campaign Manager

“Enough.

“If Barack Obama’s campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him [BELOW THE FOLD] wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.

“This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry.

“We will not be distracted.”

Right on, Maggie. Do you remember this photo in the New York Times following Bhutto’s tragic assassination? And remember the reprehensible attack from Obama/Deval Patrick media/messager provider David Axelrod following Bhutto’s murder?

Obama Campaign In Disarray? Making Political Hay Out of Bhutto Assassination?
By SusanUnPC on December 27, 2007 at 4:28 PM in Clinton, Obama, Pakistan

It’s hard to believe that Barack Obama’s campaign could be in such disarray that its campaign manager, David Axelrod, would use the tragic, horrific assassination of Benazir Bhutto to take, as CNN’s anchor just said, a “swipe” at Sen. Clinton. Writes Taylor Marsh, “The Obama campaign is in a panic. Mr. Axelrod’s reprehensible statement is meant to deflect the spotlight and rescue his candidate, because as people think about the implications of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination one thing comes to mind and it isn’t the leadership experience of Barack Obama.”

Taylor quotes The Page, which reports, “David Axelrod, Barack Obama’s top strategist, told reporters after the speech that Clinton will not benefit from a renewed conversation about foreign policy in the wake of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination in Pakistan.” Clinton will not benefit? Is Axelrod so desperate he’d make a swipe like that right after Bhutto’s assassination?

In stark and relievingly somber contrast, the New York Times blog posted this new story at 1pm ET, “Mrs. Clinton and Ms. Bhutto” … READ ALL.

Then there’s what Obama goons are doing to civil rights hero John Lewis for his support of Hillary Clinton and for, so far, refusing to switch despite undue pressure:

John Lewis no longer groovy? Hutchins to oppose him
Wednesday, February 20, 2008, 02:54 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The Rev. Markel Hutchins will announce today that he’s going to oppose Rep. John Lewis of Atlanta in the Democratic primary this July, saying the civil rights icon who has represented the city in Congress for two decades is un-hip.

Hutchins, who calls himself the “next generation civil rights activist,” will make his announcement at 5:30 p.m. …

Hutchins, 30, is pitching his campaign as a generational changing of the guard and himself as the youthful face of the Hip-Hop generation, with which, he said, Lewis is out of touch. The race, he said, is a choice between “the generation that started the movement to the one poised to continue it.” …

Repug-nant behavior.

Oh, and that photo that’s causing the dust-up? Drudge, who else, has it:
oa.jpg

NOTE that Drudge constantly links to pro-Obama stories, and to anti-Clinton stories. He got the memo from Karl et al. that they want to face Obama in the fall, and he’s only too happy to oblige — including the false smear that this came from the Clinton campaign.

NOT A SINGLE pro-Hillary blogger I know would EVER post this. It is unfair to Obama, and meritless. As Maggie Williams pointed out, this is what politicians do when they visit other countries.

Even Politico.com has now admitted that they just “assumed” it came from Clinton’s campaign. If Politico had BOTHERED to check, they’d know that this was circulating all over the rightwing blogs all weekend. Memeorandum.com had a link to all the blog stories on it — all of them rightwing blogs / none of them Clinton blogs.

And please remember that it is Obama’s campaign that tried to make political hay out of attacking Hillary Clinton on the Bhutto assassination.

And it is Obama’s campaign that is strong-arming Black Caucus members, including the civil rights hero John Lewis.

Well, this pro-Hillary blogger will post such a photo, as a reminder that Obama’s supporters is full of racists. When they called my Japanese mom a racist over calling him, “Obaba” (Japanese for granny), you can bet I don’t take that as kindness.

You may want to unite with racists, I sure don’t. Japanese-Americans already had their time in concentration camps in the US, damn if it’ll be repeated.

  • Ga6thDem

That picture really makes Obama look silly. Is “divisive” the only word the Obama campaign knows? They scream it enough. Tiresome.

Expect this picture to be blasted all over the TV if Obama’s the nominee.

As Maggie Williams pointed out, this is what politicians do when they visit other countries.

Sure hope they don’t publish a pic of him in a loin cloth when he visits Africa.

  • yttik

Many people are saying hillary is responsible for this photo. That’s exactly the problem, what happens when Obama has no Hillary to use as a buffer? Is that going to be an effective strategy in a general election? No! He has to be able to stand on his own two feet without pointing to hillary.

And it also speaks to his lack of leadership skills. Everytime something bad happens to him he blames it on Hillary. Way to take personal responsibility and own the problem. Not!

I could care less that he’s in native dress, but some people will care. A leader would embrace that photo and define the dialog. A self centered child whines about how mean people are being and blames Hillary.

Everyone, quickly, go to the Op-Ed in the NYTimes and after reading Ms. Ferraro’s piece (about Superdelegates & FL and MI) enter a comment. There are over 300 angry and insulting comments to her for her positions from Obama supporters.

Did Obama supporters think this photo wasn’t waiting in the rightwings waiting to appear?? They really have to step away from the Kool-Aid, it’s rotting their brains.

This is what Hillary supporters have been talking about: he’s not been vetted. Can he take the heat?

Apparently not. This is not what I’m looking for in a leader. It’s time for the kiddies to realize this ain’t Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Obamamaniacs are freaking out because this is the third punch they’ve gotten over the last 48 hours (SNL skit and Clinton mocking BO’s empty rhetoric). Now this photo comes out on the heels of the Farrakhan endorsement, and, let’s face it, this stuff scares ignorant hicks who think eeeevil muslim terrorists are waiting to murder us in our beds.

Plus BO looks like a 98 pound weakling in the photo.

Got a post in, but the Obama-o-matics are flooding it. No doubt over 30% are Republicans trying to make it appear it’s an overwhelming “momentum” against her opinion.

Ferraro was spot on about the SDs and the dangers of open primaries. Seen it in GA with the so-called landslide for Obama. Believe me conservatives don’t vote for the most liberal senator in the senate, just because they like Obama’s speeches — ain’t happenin’. Come November those numbers are going switch like night and day.

  • Sam

I am sorry, but his over the top reaction to this photograph was ridiculous and offensive. As an immigrant, I really appreciate the fact that our leaders make an effort to show respect to foreign cultures when they are abroad. Why is he acting like he has something to apologize for? What is he going to do when he is president and visits and foreign country and pays respect to their tradition? Force every newspaper to not publish the photos? It is ludicrous, offensive, and frankly, intolerant.

  • ChrisXP

Not much intelligence there from Hannity’s forum. Partisan stench so high that a gas mask isn’t enough — a Superfund cleanup would be needed to breath.

At this rate it’s going to be 52 years and only 4 Dem presidents.

  • Xeno

Those Orange Staters are so damned predictable — I just knew they’d be in a tizzy over this. Bet it never occurred to the brainless critters that it’s an actual picture of their god and it isn’t scandalous in the least. Don’t they realize that by treating the thing like it’s something to be ashamed of and squealing like stuck pigs, they’re just ensuring that it will be seen far and wide?

That’s the really strange part of this ginned-up pseudo-controversy. Why are the Obots so overwrought about that photo? All he had to do was say that he dressed in traditional garb like most other leaders do when abroad. Own the damned thing, instead of acting like it’s something to be ashamed of. This isn’t the first time the Obama camp has run off like headless chickens based on a Drudge smear. If this is a preview of the way they’re going to act in the GE, heaven help them.

There’s two answers for that question.

    1. They’re working for the Republicans (because it helps them).
    2. They’re of the wing of the Democrat party that has torn down the LBJ, Carter and Clinton Administrations so Republicans can be elected later.

I would think that after 48 years, Dems would finally get together enough to gain a 5th president. Apparently this won’t happen — history is repeating itself. :(

    Kathleen,

Since you were questioning Obama’s integrity, I thought you might want to see rezkowatch.blogspot.com, and the UKTimes, today, the 25th of Feb.

The UKTimes is now raising a question as to whether Nadhmi Auchi, who was Saddam’s right hand man, PAID for Obama’s house.

Auchi is a British citizen, and a convicted felon, long suspected of money laundering, among other illegal actions.

In addition, he served next to Saddam Huessin, helping him facilitate money to and from Iraq, in the Oil for Food travesty. He is connected to Tony Rezko, Obama’s self proclaimed political godfather.

Auchi has also financed right wing movements in Germany, and France, reportedly helping to elect Sarkozy. He is one of the world’s richest men.

This is whom Obama is DIRECLY connected to, reports state he may helped Auchi get a US visa, which was denied, initially, in exchange for…something.

Anyway, this is the tip of the iceberg, and this is why so many have taken against Obama.

Auchi is also suspected of being directly connected to terrorism, too.

Maybe arms and money, arms that murder innocents the world over.

And Auchi has directly contributed to Obama’s campaign, through his Panamanian company, Fintrade.

Is this going to be our president? How immature is all of this – a president needs to project calm for a country. Why was he hiding this photo? It was already published last year – so why are they blaming the Hillary campaign for this? And the only evidence they have is Drudge said it was from Hillary’s campaign?

I don’t think George W. Bush ever dignified a Drudge Report story like this.

This is a sign of the inflammation of racial and partisan tension that is to come.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Oh god knows. One can count on the Democratic party to do what’s in its worst interests and, god knows, those of the American people.

Dukakis, Carter, Gore, Kerry … sigh. Then, bless their hearts, they were all praying that Gore would ride in like a white knight (er, green knight) and save the party this year by running! Uh, nice idea. ‘cept that everyone — everyone! — reverts to type. And the old cautious Al who runs from controversy and controversial subjects would be back in no time. And the media, of course, would be all over him again.

I do not care if the candidate inspires me or moves me. I want competency and some experience. It’s the same way I’d pick a doctor. I do NOT want the nicest doctor in the building. I want the best, even if he’s cranky or difficult. But Democrats have this dumb idea that the “nicest” candidate is the most “electable.” Disgusting.

  • TeakWoodKite

That doesn’t excuse a Clinton staff member from floating it.

Do you have an actual factual for this statement?

  • Sam

Cee, you miss some critical points. Senator Clinton’s campaign did not send this photo out. Contrary to your implication, there is nothing for her to gain by doing this.

Obama is the one who turned this picture into a smear. Not even drudge tried to insinuate that anyone meant anything vicious with it. A picture without a vicious context is supposted to be a smear? Obama didn’t seem to have a problem when it ran on the cover of National Enquirer, and that is right, he should not have a problem. He should have responded basically exactly as Ms. Williams did and used it as an opportunity to tout his diplomatic trip and how much respect he has for other cultures. Instead, he made it seem that there was something wrong the picture. Goodness, if he is that bothered by its existance (and he has NO reason to be) he shouldn’t have let the AP take it! I mean, honestly, if he believes the image of him dressed in Somalian traditional clothing is such a problem, what is he going to do as president? Is he going to refuse to partake in such ceremonies because he is afraid? That is just silly. He is who he is and by reacting the way he did he is telling Americans they should feel uncomfortable, when in fact, there is nothing for them to feel uncomfortable with. If this non-smear bothers him, I wonder why his campaign isn’t hooting and hollering about Jon Stewart’s use o his middle name yesterday. He really needs a thicker skin if he is going to make it through the general.

There are hundreds of pictures of Hillary wearing a hajib. She has never shied away from them, they were broadcast as front page news when Bhenazir Bhutto died. There are certainly people who make an ignorant argument about the fact that she as a woman cannot be commander-in-chief and negotiate with middle east countries and pictures of her with a hajib reinforce this concept. Certainly, Barack Obama has made plenty of sexist statements to also reinforce this image.

He overreacted, and it is going to bite him in the general election if he makes it. He needs to grow a thicker skin.

  • Cee

    Teak,

The non-denial denials coming from the campaign.
Hillary saying she isn’t even aware of this.

Hillary Clinton woos man who nearly ruined her husband
    · Campaign staff use Drudge Report against poll

Yesterday, it emerged that the caring went two ways. The New York Times reported that the Clinton campaign had grown adept at using the Drudge Report to leak news that could steal the thunder from rivals, or to solidify her position as the frontrunner for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination for next year.

Earlier this month, Ms Clinton’s staff leaked campaign fundraising data to the website just as her rival for the nomination, Barack Obama, was to deliver a policy speech on Iraq – and a crucial 20 minutes before the official release of the information. The story on Ms Clinton’s fundraising prowess dominated the news cycle.

The New York Times reported that the Clinton campaign had opened a direct line of communication to Drudge through a former Democratic national committee official, Tracy Sefl. Ms Sefl refused to comment yesterday, but the revelation was widely seen as a sign of Drudge’s importance in the US media, despite his reclusive nature and a history of getting some stories spectacularly wrong.

The Drudge Report’s influence goes beyond its average readership – the site claims 422 million log-ons in the past month – with television and radio producers scouring the site for potential scoops.

  • Cee

    Sam,

I like the way OBAMA reacted.

In a radio interview with WAOI in San Antonio, Sen. Barack Obama commented about the photo on the website Drudge Report showing him dressed in traditional Somali attire.

“Everybody knows that whether it’s me or Senator Clinton, or Bill Clinton, that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift,” he told WAOI, “The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad. We are going to try to stay focused on what will make a difference in our foreign policy, including bringing the war in Iraq to an honorable end.”

He noted that he believes Americans are saddened when they see “these kind of politics.”

“The notion that they would try to use this to imply in some way that I’m foreign, I think is, you know, unfortunate,” Obama later told Dallas/Ft. Worth radio station WBAP.

“These are the kinds of political tricks and silliness you start seeing at the end of campaigns,” Obama said in an interview with the ABC Radio affiliate.

  • Cee

ABC News’ Teddy Davis and Jacqueline Klingebiel Report: During a Monday interview with ABC’s Dallas affiliate, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., did not flatly deny the DrudgeReport’s charge that her campaign forwarded a photo of rival Barack Obama in traditional African dress.
