Oh, So “Elegant…”

And classy, too. Ahem. I am speaking, of course, of President Obama. Recently, my friend, American Girl in Italy, had a post on Sean Penn’s Oscar Acceptance speech in which he spoke of how thrilled he is to live in a country that would elect such an “elegant man.” Well, THAT’S some criterion for president. But that’s not the point. Those of us paying attention know Obama was woefully unqualified, inexperienced, and definitely not ready for the position of POTUS.

No, this is about class, elegance, or the lack thereof. Prime Minister Gordon Brown, visiting recently, discovered just how classy and elegant his close American ally was when he and his wife visited this week. Oh, yeah.

As you may know, it is a long-standing tradition for heads of state to exchange gifts. The National Archives describes the custom:

Today gift-giving between heads of state is an important part of modern-day international relations. U.S. Presidents routinely meet face to face with leaders from every corner of the earth. These state visits shimmer with pomp and ceremony, including formal welcomes, elaborate dinners, and the exchange of gifts. As tokens of this ritual of diplomacy, gifts are enduring emblems of international cooperation and friendship.

Though gifts from foreign leaders bear a symbolic meaning, they also resonate with the variety and vibrancy of all the nations of the world. They range from native arts or antiques-prized pieces of a country’s culture and heritage–to sparkling gold and gemstones. Other gifts are surprisingly sentimental, symbols of national or personal friendship. All enrich the relations between two countries and their leaders. And each recalls a moment in history, when two nations–often separated by oceans or ideology–briefly clasped hands.

Well, Gordon Brown certainly got the memo (H/T to Ed Morrissey at HotAir for the article). According to the Daily Mail, Prime Minister Brown presented the following to President Obama:

He had put clearly great thought into giving the U.S. President lavish gifts to signify Britain’s ‘special relationship’ with the U.S.

During his historic trip to Washington, Gordon Brown gave Barack Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet – once called HMS President.

The unique present delighted Mr Obama because oak from the Gannet’s sister ship, HMS Resolute, was carved to make a desk that already takes place in the Oval Office in the White House, after being presented by Britain to the US in 1880.

The Prime Minister went to the trouble of hunting down the perfect gift after becoming the first European leader invited to the White House by the new Commander In Chief…

Mr Brown also took to Washington a framed commission for HMS Resolute, a vessel that came to mark Anglo-US peace when it was saved from ice packs by Americans and given to Queen Victoria.

He also gave a first edition set of the seven-volume classic biography of Churchill by Sir Martin Gilbert.

Wow. Prime Minister Brown really did put a great deal of thought into these gifts. How very generous, and considerate. Along with him, his wife did likewise:

Mr Brown and his wife also showered gifts on the Obama children giving Sasha and Malia an outfit each from Topshop and six children’s books by British authors which are shortly to be published in America.

Well, no doubt, you are dying to know just what this classy, elegant man and his wife with the toned arms (seriously? This is now considered to be a trait worth of numerous articles? That’s just sad.) gave the Prime Minister of one of our greatest allies. I’ll let the article set the stage:

So it would be perfectly understandable if Mr Brown felt a little underwhelmed at the official gift he received in return.

For despite being leader of the world’s most bountiful nation, President Obama handed over nothing more thought-provoking than 25 classic American films on DVD.

It was the equivalent of receiving a pair of socks from an unfamiliar aunt at Christmas – and a less-than-glowing affirmation of the UK-US bond…

Despite being a ‘special collector’s box set’, any film buff could have picked up the movies from their local video store for just £250.

It is not clear what the Prime Minister – not believed to a great fan of cinema – thought about receiving the films.

You read that right. President Obama gave Prime Minister Brown a box of DVDs (the list is at the bottom of the page). As for the First Lady, the one Vogue said we were waiting for:

Mrs Brown has been praised for her well-chosen gifts for the Obama children – but Mrs Obama’s gift to the Brown children appeared less thoughtful…

In return, the Obamas gave the Browns two models of the presidential helicopter, Marine One, to take home to sons Fraser and John.

Huh – do you suppose those came from the White House Gift Shop or something?** And HONESTLY, that’s the best they could, no, WOULD, do?? Two cheap plastic model helicopters? Wow, that Michelle is just bursting with good graces, clearly the “hostess with the mostest.” Not. What, did they send one of their frat boys out to the Dollar General or something to pick up a couple of things for them? Heck, Michelle didn’t even get the boys two DIFFERENT things for crying out loud (one could have gotten Air Force One, at least). ** Turns out that the answer to that question is, YES. Yes, they did come from the Gift Shop. Holy Toledo.

Holy cow – if this is what our president and his wife give people we like, what the hell do they give heads of state with whom we have issues? A deck of cards? A rubber-band airplane? A yo-yo with the presidential seal?? A pack of gum? Wow.

The article continues:

Downing Street yesterday (THURS) refused even to state which movies were in the box set – perhaps a reflection of their embarrassment that the gift was less generous than the ones taken to Washington by the Prime Minister.

But the Mail understands the gift included Hollywood blockbusters such as Star Wars, The Godfather and Orson Welles’ ground-breaking flick Citizen Kane.

Perhaps pertinently given Britain is floundering in an economic slump, the DVD collection was thought to feature the movie of John Steinbeck’s Great Depression novel, ‘The Grapes Of Wrath’.

It also included the Oscar-winning boxing biopic ‘Raging Bull’ starring Robert Di Nero and Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho – maybe a comment on the PM’s notorious short fuse?

And he will hope that at a General Election the British public do not shun his imploration for another term in office by thinking at the ballot box of the famous line from another of the movies, Casblanca: ‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.’

But following Mr Brown’s his recent troubles – the UK entering recession, soaring job losses and home repossessions, Labour struggling in the polls and threats of leadership challenges – he may be pleased at being able to settle down for a quiet night in front of the ultimate feel-good movie: It’s A Wonderful Life.

Number 10 was staying silent about the gift, but the Mail has learned the American Film Institute produced a box set of 25 top U.S. movies as a “special request” for the White House last month.

Well, hell, if you had gone to as much trouble to find such a beautiful, perfect gifts, that clearly took a lot of thought and care, and you ended up with a box of dvds, would YOU want to tell everyone?? No!! What must Prime Minister Brown (and his wife) think of this All Hailed Obama now? Maybe they are getting a clue as to what many of us already knew. Poseurs.

The article continues:

The Prime Minister has not had the best of luck when receiving gifts from U.S. presidents.

He was given a fur-trimmed brown leather bomber jacket by George W. Bush during first trip to America in summer 2007.

Emblazoned with the presidential seal and the logo of Camp David, it also boasted a black patch bearing the name ‘Rt Hon Gordon Brown’.

Commentators gleefully pointed out that the garment was hardly in keeping with Mr Brown’s usual sober attire of business suit and tie.

Not surprisingly, it later emerged that the PM had decided not to keep the gift. Instead, he gave it to charity.

Um, I think the bomber jacket may have been a step up. Heck, I doubt the dvds will even do that much for charity since you can get them pretty cheaply just about ANYWHERE.

This is what happens when you surround yourself with 20-something frat boys who have demonstrated that they have NO sense of decorum. Or have a wife with no sense of decorum. Or when you yourself have no sense of decorum. You don’t even think to hire people who DO because you don’t know it’s MISSING!!! Sheesh!

I just can’t see how Obama’s gift can be construed as anything else other than TACKY, TACKY, TACKY. Thoughtless. Classless. Clueless! And about as far from “elegant” as you can get. Just goes to prove the adage that having money does NOT mean you have class, and that is nowhere more evident than with the two currently occupying the White House. Elegant? Not even freakin’ CLOSE.

Dammit – I sure hope I can get the theme of “The Beverly Hillbillies” out of my head sometime soon.

As promised, here are the movies the Obamas gave:

Do you suppose they gave them the European editions so they will work in their DVD? Or did he send them packing with the American editions? Classless, arrogant and frankly, embarrassing. These two are clueless!

    • oowawa

Well, shucks. It could have been worse. The 25 films could have featured America’s great victory over Britain in the Revolutionary War. That would have been like giving the president of Mexico a model of The Alamo. Mr. O probably had wise counsel from someone with a deep sense of political decorum, like Jon Favreau.

      • Ashy1

Don’t we have anything more “historic” and meaningful around the White House we could have given them. Maybe something like original signed documents denoting terms of surrender of the colonies.

        • Ashy1

Of course, if there is such a document, we would have to give them a photocopy. A real NICE photocopy.

      • oowawa

        It could have been worse

Yes! As a tribute to American ingenuity, the 25 DVD’s could have been bootleg copies home-made on the White House personal computer!

And, it would have been thoughtful to include signed copies (To My Friends Across the Pond) of O’s two best-selling novels!

Plus, a framed and signed picture of The One Himself!

        • Ferd Berfle

And, it would have been thoughtful to include signed copies (To My Friends Across the Pond) of O’s two best-selling novels!…Plus, a framed and signed picture of The One Himself!

          Oh, the humanity.

On second thought, I’m glad they gave them the videos and didn’t do MORE damage.

        • Ferd Berfle

          Testing

Yet another comment shredding. I guess it didn’t like the word “humanity”.

        • Anon

Maybe one of those limited edition plates would have been better.

          • JulieD

Hysterical!! They could use it as a frisbee or dog dish.

      • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

        oowawa, ROTFLMAO – good one!

And I SERIOUSLY doubt they gave them European versions. I mean, really, as little thought as they put into these gifts, would it even OCCUR to them that the US versions wouldn’t work? Uh, no.

    • Jaycephus

No, it’s being reported that they were the US
versions, i.e., will only play in the US region, and won’t play on a non-US region DVD player, i.e. all those sold in England.

Maybe that’s incorrect, but it IS being reported.

But this is really the biggest insult:

Brown has gone blind in one eye, is losing sight in his ‘good’ eye, and may lose his sight entirely:

Aides say Brown’s handwriting has been getting larger, and he needs memos printed in 36-point font, triple spaced. The PM himself says he has “enough” vision, but in public he often stares in the wrong direction, and recently he left a stage the wrong way and became lost.

      Nice.

We give DVD’s, a rather cheesy gift in normal cases, to a guy that is nearly blind.

      Now THAT’S class, folks.

  • yttik

This is good news! Here I thought “creating a classless society” meant destroying capitalism and making us all dependent on the Gov for crumbs. Whew, what a relief, apparently they just meant “classless” as in tacky and having no class.

    • Ferd Berfle

      Now that’s funny. LMAO.

    • JulieD

      yttik –

I just wish it didn’t mean taxed to death and tacky. Maybe on their return trip – poor things – the B.O.s can give them some gangsta rap CDs trashing HRC.

  • candymarl

Oh good grief. These are films anyone could get anywhere – even in Britain.

No thought, no care, and no sense of history behind any of these gifts.

Another thing, why was this visit historic? The visit was historic because of the bi-racial nature of the President? But I thought we were now post-racial and that no longer matters?

Oh and the pen made from the wood of the slave ship? A beautiful gesture to be sure. But Obama, unlike millions of black men in this country, is not a descendant of slaves.

    • FLDemFem

Well, Obummer may not be descended from slaves, but he is descended from slave owners. His Kansas family connections did own slaves. So he is descended from slave-holders, not slaves. Ironic, isn’t it?

      • candymarl

        The irony! It burns!

        • Lyn

Didn’t his Kenyan ancestors sell slaves?

    • no kidding

candymarl — I have recorded each of those movies which have been on Turner Movie Classics a million times. Its embarrassing to say the least but Brown should have expected this after Obama returned the bust of Winston Churchill which was presented to the White House by the British Govt.

The worst comment was made by a State Dept official who said that Britain is no different from the other 190 countries. He was in charge of planning the trip and couldn’t care less.

    • Jaycephus

      It wasn’t a slave ship.

It was a war-ship that did many things during its service, from explore the artic where it’s sister-ship, the HMS Resolute, was left trapped in the ice, to intercept slavers after Parliament effectively banned slavery.

  • imustprotest

I wonder if they at least included a box of microwave popcorn and some Junior Mints?

    • JulieD

      LOL!

  • Peggy Sue

I also read that Gordon Brown has serious eye problems and aides worry he is losing his sight. So, regardless of whether these DVD’s were formatted properly, it would pretty much be a useless gift.

The gift snafu is embarrassing and shabby. The Brits are our closest ally. They’ve stood shoulder to shoulder with us in many conflicts, lived and died with Americans in many theaters. This is “not” the way you treat a friend. Shame on the White House and its clueless aides.

    • Diana

I read in one of the British newspapers or blogs. That not only do they sell the box sets there, but that these were not even properly formatted DVD’s. The Browns are here and we don’t have any gifts, quick you run down to the Wal-Mart. You go to the gift shop.

Although, if I remember correctly wasn’t there some fiasco during the primaries when he went on his grand European trip with the same thing? They had to find a fake gift box or something for the pictures?

      • Elizabeth

I’m not saying Obama isn’t poorly prepared to tackle the massive task in front of him…But if gift planning and selection in this case went through the American Film Institute, at least the coding issue should have scanned with THEM. :(

        • JustMe~~

But if gift planning and selection in this case went through the American Film Institute,

It was a rush job from the WH gift store don’t blame the American Film Institute,

The Obama clan should of been more organized…
This was the first visit for the O administration from a dignitary from another country it should of been TOP PRIORITY to make sure everything went well..

          • JustMe~~

Guess we will be playing passing the buck for the next 3.75 yrs?

It gets old remember he was ready from DAY 1?

Had great Foreign relations experience he had travelled the world from Kenya, Indonesia Pakistan to Berlin?

He is a man of the world remember he knew more than Hillary and Bill.

            What a joke.

          • Corinne

No, it was NOT the first visit from a dignitary of another country – the japanese PM visited weeks ago.

and the DVD’s most certainly were put together as a special collection by the American Film Institute – especially as gifts for whoever the White House wanted to give them to. Not available from the gift shop – those were the model helicopters.

            • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

Janice, Ellen, Corinne – now you have three aliases?

              • Ellen

    • http://www.rabblerouserruminations.blogspot.com/ Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy

That’s right – if I recall correctly, he is blind in one eye, and losing sight in the other. American Girl had something abt that in her post yesterday, I’m pretty sure.

IMUSTPROTEST – GOOD one, and no, I doubt they even got the popcorn and Jr. Mints (my personal fave for movie watching!).

But then, this shouldn’t too surprising given the sorts of obamabots who come regularly to this blog posting dreck that isn’t fit to line a cat-box or the 20-something Obalahblah-employed creeps who can’t get dates with real women so resort to molesting cardboard cut-outs.

I think Americans and foreigners are starting to wake up and smell the fraudo. This man of no class wants to “talk” with “moderate” Taliban terrorists???No decorum, no protocol, no sense of history, no values, no virtues, no guts. bho the fraud and mo the fraud are the most embarrassing anti-Americans/non-Americans ever allowed to be in our country, let alone our WH. Shame on them, and shame on the greedy, socialist, fascist power mongers in banking, politics and the media who installed them.

    Disgusting.

Ferd, are you suggesting that perhaps someone like Jacqueline Kennedy would have chosen different gifts?

She would have. I give Jackie credit–she had taste and class. I cannot think of a single First Lady who had as little class as the current occupant displays. Tasteless and vulgar come immediately to mind.

    Have you ever read Beowulf?

Here’s a line from the opening:

    he thaes frofre gebad
    weax under wolcum wearthmyndum thah
    oth thaet him aeghwilc ymbsittendra
    ofer hronrode hyran scolde
gomban gyldan, thaet waes god cyning

(I can’t type it in the Anglo Saxon script.)

    It means this:

He throve under heaven in power and pride
Till alien peoples beyond the ocean
Paid toll and tribute. That was a good king.

If you know anything about history, this gift giving to seal alliances and good feelings has gone on since ancient times.

I thought Obama was supposedly such an intelligent person.

    I guess not. :-)

The UK Telegraph has a story up that says the reason The Won didn’t give the British a proper reception was because “he’s tired.” Additionally the article quotes an unnamed State Dept official as saying there is no special relationship between the UK and the USA.

The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: “There’s nothing special about Britain. You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment.” The apparent lack of attention to detail by the Obama administration is indicative of what many believe to be Mr Obama’s determination to do too much too quickly.”

Here’s a link to the entire piece.

    • candymarl

“Do too much too quickly?” Pacing yourself and setting priorities is a function of experience and judgment.

      It appears Obama has neither.

PS. Knock off the parties. You, Mr. Obama, were not too tired to attend those. However, you were too tired to learn proper protocol when it comes to hosting foreign dignitaries. I guess that shows where your priorities are.

    • Corinne

Not ONE person is even quoted here. This is a conservative right wing newspaper – with a history of attacking Obama and Democrats. This article with all its ‘sources close to…’ ‘someone who is close to a white house staffer’ is just like the National Enquirer and the popular British tabloids. There is not much here I can believe to be true – just inuendo and rumor.

      • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

Oh Janice, Ellen, Corinne… you just can’t believe it to be true, because you don’t want it to be true. Obama has already called and apologized. The WH has also called, and tried to spin it, and say Obama was too tired.

What can’t you believe? Why is this so hard for you to believe?

Why do you come here, and under THREE different names, deny this story to be true, over and over again?

You are spending SO much time and energy trying to deny something that has been reported all over the place.

I’ll cautiously submit that Michelles toned arms are the result of a lifetime of brachiation.

You have to forgive the Obama’s, they haven’t been in the WH long enough to build up a healthy supply of the “Obama” themed souvenirs that will become the gifts of choice in the future. I can imagine Obama giving Angela Merkel an official Obama WH shower cap……………..Think about it.

      • izzy

I’ll cautiously submit that Michelles toned arms are the result of a lifetime of brachiation.

Why go there? Do you really want to ‘cautiously’ make an ‘ape swinging through trees’ reference? How incredibly ugly.

        • andrew191

The POTUS historically plays a major role in setting the cultural tone of the country, so can you blame me for simply following the Obama lead?

You ask “Do you really want to ‘cautiously’ make an ‘ape swinging through the trees’ reference?” Well, I didn’t use the word “ape”, you did, children brachiate on jungle-jims all the time, I’ve done it myself. This is not simply about whether the Obamas lack “class.” They lack the experience, sense of history, relationship building savvy that citizens should expect from the person chosen from all other candidates to be President of the US. The real shame, once again, is that we allowed biased media (MSNBC), the Party system, and an uninformed public to cram this administration down our throats.

Still waiting for any comment at all, but condemnation would be best, from the White House of the Real IRA killing today in N. Ireland of two British soldiers and injuring of two other soldiers and two pizza delivery men.

I will say that at least Bush seemed to put a bit of work into his gift.
I have a feeling that before summer is here Obama’s ratings will be making Bush’s ratings looking pretty good.
Obama lavish lifestyle in the White House while more and more people are ending up standing in food banks is making many people angry. Obama is throwing unnessary expensive parties at least weekly that are costing the taxpayers plenty.
Its seems like the Obama’s think they are so above everyone and do not have to even follow what Obama preaches.

    • candymarl

Yes, because throwing parties at least once a week is the very definition of ‘sacrificing’.

Eating some of the most expensive foods available is ‘sacrificing’.

Getting free designer clothing and draping yourself in rows of pearls is ‘sacrificing’.

Isn’t that what Obama said during his address to Congress? That he would sacrifice along with the rest of us?

Guess not. But the MSM, that would have excoriated the Clintons, Carters, Bushes, and any other WH occupants for the same behavior, has nothing to say.

Rev. Amy. all one has to do is recall that BO and MO sat in that church for twenty years while the fools at the dias spouted “Euro-hate” speech.

The indifference BO and MO have shown is not surprising, but the inability to understand the symbolism of a gift in this context is a betrayal of our “English Heritage”. Which is exactly what the bigot Rev. Wright taught BO and MO to do.

One may conclude that the “O’ness” of it all is one of the signs.

“And when the dragon saw that he was cast down to the earth, he persecuted the woman that brought forth the man child.”

    International Women’s Day March 8th,2009 –
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20ubaNSuBq4
    ……………

    Dear President Obama,

Today is the Celebration of International Women’s Day 2009 and I just wanted you to know that there is no moderate Taliban in Afghanistan Sir. I also wanted to know how or what you are doing to mark International Women’s Day 2009?

Thank you for your consideration on establishing a Presidential Commission on Women, I will wait patiently since its been 45 years since the last commission in 1963 under the late President John F. Kennedy.

    WomenCount
    http://womencount.org/its_our_time

SOMETIMES THERE IS A WATERSHED MOMENT IN HISTORY WHEN IT BECOMES CLEAR THAT THINGS MUST CHANGE AND LEADERS MUST ACT. THAT MOMENT IS NOW FOR THE WOMEN OF THIS COUNTRY.

THE LESSONS OF THE 2008 ELECTION WERE ABUNDANT:

    • As the economy became the single most critical issue in the election, the role that women play in our economic structure has never been clearer. Women are the backbone of the nation’s workforce and control 70 percent of its buying power.

    • The candidacies of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, while inspiring women and girls around the country to imagine what can be, exposed extreme gender bias in the media and throughout our culture.

    • Women, who make up 56 percent of the voting population, were targeted as never before as the critical bloc that would determine the outcome of the election. Indeed, women were at the center of the conversation in this election.

In 1961, as the nation grappled with the issue of women in the workplace, President John Kennedy convened the first Presidential Commission on the Status of Women and appointed Eleanor Roosevelt as its chair. Kennedy recognized the moment was right.

That was 48 years ago, and it’s time to do it again. As in 1961, women are at the forefront of our political discourse – and we are committed to keeping them there.

The Commission will be established and developed in the spirit of the new Obama Administration and its commitment to bipartisanship and grassroots participation. We will turn to you, the grassroots movement of women that we are creating together, to help determine the priorities for the Commission.

A record number of women are seeking ways to participate more fully in all aspects of American life, politics and policymaking. A Presidential Commission on Women is the right vehicle to initiate a national conversation on the future of women. It’s our time!

    Sincerely,

    Woman Voter

    Totally OT:
I was waiting for an open thread to talk about NACA. It’s the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America.

It’s consists of seminars sponsored by Congressman James E, Clyburn of South Carolina. You can’t get to the seminars or there are none in your area? No help for you.

Where did this corporation come from? Who’s the CEO? Who are the board of directors? Why is a US Congressman sponsoring a seminar for a private business? If the private sector will do this on their what was the stimulus bill for? Was this company given money in the bailout, excuse me stimulus, bill? Has the company ever given money to Clyburn?

If we had a real investigative media these questions may be asked. These days? Forget about it.

Because I am originally from Arkansas (a little north of Hope), it always galled me when Bill and Hillary were insulted as “white trash” or “trailer trash” based on Bill’s southern birth.

I think this fiasco has pretty much put that to rest. Bama comes from real trash on both sides of his family and he reflects that.

    • FLDemFem

I was living in WV at the time of Bill’s first run for President. His reelection too. And one of the favorite jokes that was going around in DC trickled up to WV and they loved it.. for other reasons than they did in DC. The joke is as follows..
Two men are standing talking, both DC insiders. One says, “Well, I don’t mind that they are from Arkansas. It’s a great state, but did their names have to be Hill and Billy??”

In WV, they got a big kick out of that joke, at last, someone who was like them heading for the White House. Now, no one in WV believed that either of them were actual hillbillies, both Clintons are loved in WV to this day, but they loved that joke.

And here is a true story about how I got two votes, one for each election, for Bill Clinton. I had a bad accident, my truck, which had a “Dump Bush” bumpersticker smack dab in the center of the tailgate, got broadsided by a semi and damn near killed me. I was out of the hospital in time to vote for Bill. And a couple of weeks after the election a woman came up to me at the local store and asked if I was the girl who had that terrible accident over on Rte.XXX. I said yes I was. She then looked at me and said that she had voted for Bill Clinton when she found out I survived the crash. She thought it was a sign from God that someone with that bumpersticker had survived a wreck that bad. (The truck, Ford F-250, was totaled, and was hit so hard that the tires were ripped off on the driver’s side..including the rear duallys. The center of the cab was buckled upwards, the frame was buckled too.) So anyway, I took a deep breath and smiled at her and said, “Oh, thank you. I am sure the President-elect appreciates it and I hope you will vote for him again in four years.” She assured me that she would.

      • http://firefox AnnieCollier

Sounds as if you had (have) an angel on your shoulder. I, too, survived an accident years ago that defied all odds. Eventually I came to realize there were definite reasons for my survival…hope you have too.

        • FLDemFem

Yeah, by all odds, I should have died years ago. But every time something happens, I manage to make it out alive. I have survived dengue fever, amoebic dysentery, scarlet fever, red measles, tuberculosis, rheumatic fever, and various other more minor ailments such as mumps and strep. And most of those were in the 50′s and overseas. And as a professional horseperson, I have survived being tossed, dumped, savaged, stomped, flipped over onto and rolled on. My only injuries from all of that was one broken ankle and a couple of broken toes. Sometimes I think I am going to live forever, given that life has been trying to kill me all my life and I am still here. Maybe I am just too stubborn to die. Or maybe it’s true that only the good die young. I am a bitch on wheels and proud of it. Of course, if you work in a job that is traditionally male-dominated and you are one of the first to do so, you have to be a bitch or they eat you alive. I am still here. Hehehe.

Got rid of the bike but kept the helmet as a reminder to not take life for granted. :)

Anyone have examples of past presidential gifts to the UK? What did Bush, Clinton give? Serious here. I’m curious. I want to compare to the DVD set (what a dumb idea!).

    • http://firefox AnnieCollier

There’s a picture of a silver engraved desk set (stationery, writing pens on an engraved base signifying the occasion, letter opener and blotter) from JFK to Tito (Yugoslavia) on line.

I don’t know. Heck, they didn’t have DVD’s back then. Otherwise I’m sure Jackie would have ordered up a set for each world leader.

      • FLDemFem

There is a lot of info if you Google “presidential gifts to foreign heads of state”, links to all the libraries which list the gifts given to and from that particular president. Here is a paragraph from the page on Carter’s library web site. There is also a history of gift exchanges between heads of state throughout the world and the centuries.
        http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.org/youthspace/headofstategifts.html

The Carter’s asked state governors to contribute an item native to their state that could be a special gift for a foreign leader. A variety of gifts were given: Williamsburg silver dishes from Virginia and hand-woven woolen shawls from Kentucky. Books which appealed to a visitor’s special interest were selected, as well as leather bound photographic albums documenting their visit. Steuben crystal, Boehm pieces and china plates decorated with Winslow Homer paintings were also given.

This link is to Tokens and Treasures, a site that documents the various gifts given to the Presidents through the years.
        http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/tokens_and_treasures/gifts_of_state.html

  • PaulRevere

I was horified to hear this story. The Oblamas do not have class because (News flash!) money cannot buy class! Unfortunately, neither of them grew up with any class, therefore they have none. In addition, they are acting in a way that they beleive rich people behave (endless parties, $120M inaugeration, etc…) again showing their lack of grace, class or just plain manners. The even sadder part of this is they JUST DON’T CARE because it is all about them. THEY are the ones to get the gifts, THEY are the ones to be honored, THEY are the ones to be the center of attention. This just shows, once again, how narcissitic and megalomaniacal these people really are. What do you bet the Oblama princesses don’t write Thank You notes for their gifts. Food for thought: One classlist slip-up/insult to the wrong person, and it’s curtains for the US. Scary.

“President Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy together with their two children, brought a new, youthful spirit to the White House, which they believed should be a place to celebrate American history, culture, and achievement. As First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy planned important dinners and events at the White House and invited artists, writers, scientists, poets, and musicians to mingle with politicians, diplomats, and statesmen. One time she invited the world-renowned violinist, Isaac Stern. After his visit to the White House, he wrote to Mrs. Kennedy to thank her. “It would be difficult to tell you,” he wrote, “how refreshing, how heartening it is to find such serious attention and respect for the arts in the White House. To many of us it is one of the most exciting developments on the present American cultural scene.” Mrs. Kennedy also influenced the world of fashion. Her unique and refined sense of style made her a trend-setter, although she discouraged the excessive focus on her appearance by magazines, newspapers and the general public.

Guess no posing for cover of Vogue???

Mrs. Kennedy: Ambassador of Good Will

Mrs. Kennedy also traveled with her husband, representing the United States in other countries. Clark Clifford, a respected lawyer and advisor to President Kennedy, was so pleased with Mrs. Kennedy after her trip to Paris, Vienna, and Greece that he wrote in a thank you note, “Once in a great while, an individual will capture the imagination of people all over the world. You have done this; and what is more important, through your graciousness and tact, you have transformed this rare accomplishment into an incredibly important asset to this nation.”

She also had a swing set and tree house installed on the WH lawn. Guess we know why wannabe MEchille did this for her older girls.

As for famous musicians, Jackie knew the East Room was a good choice for enteraining guests rather than freezing weather outside for show.

Guess HRH Caroline didn’t inherit the style gene from Jackie. A great loss to the world that one.

The thing about a set of DVDs is that it is not something elegant that can be displayed on a bookcase or a desk as a memento.

The DVDs might be an OK gift for a kid, not a head of state.

  • LindaA1

It’s not that Barack and Michelle have no grasp on the importance of the pomp of their office and their every gesture that bothers me, it’s that their staffs are so clueless. I have, all along, depended on the members of their staffs to prop them up and get us through the next three and a half years.

Apparently, inexperience and incompetence abounds on all levels at the White House.
