Obama’s Ignorance of Defense

I suppose it is too much to ask the new Messiah to get his facts right, especially on defense issues. But then again, Barack is soooo special. Check out Barack’s comments posted last October. He proposes three things that, on the surface, seem eminently reasonable–stop spending $9 billion a month in Iraq, cut the missile defense system, and set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons, which includes taking “ICBM’s off hair trigger alert.” Watch it for yourself.

YouTube Preview Image

Most of this is your normal political boilerplate. Devoid of specifics and unlikely to be implemented. For example, if Obama wants to go into a general election and argue that a missile defense system should be cut, good luck. That plays right into the hands of the Republican message machine that will portrary Democrats as cowards unwilling to protect America.

What is really troubling, at least to me, is the amateur advice Obama is relying on. He asserts that U.S. ICBM’s are on “hair trigger” alert. Sorry Barack, not true. But don’t take my word

The Arms Control Association says differently:

November 2007

Q1) If “hair-trigger alert” and “launch-on-warning” are incorrect terms for describing the status of US forces on alert, what is the proper term?

A1) U.S. nuclear forces are not on “hair trigger” alert. The term “hair trigger” ignores the safeguards, deliberate actions, and procedures required in order to employ nuclear weapons. The U.S. nuclear force posture has evolved since the end of the Cold War. Only a portion of the operationally deployed U.S. nuclear forces is maintained on a ready alert status. No strategic bombers, 450 Minuteman III IBCMs, and a small number of SSBNs at sea are on alert at any given time.

U.S. policy is not to rely on a “launch on warning” strategy. U.S. strategic forces are postured to provide maximum flexibility so the U.S. is not faced with a “use or lose” dilemma. A major strike on the U.S. would be required to eliminate the responsive ICBM capability. The ICBM force could be launched prior to impact, but only if the President were to direct such an action. In addition, should the ICBM force not be able to respond, the U.S. SSBNs at sea could deliver an overwhelming response if directed by the President.

Should the international security situation call for it, the U.S. could bring its nuclear forces to a higher state of readiness (i.e., “generated alert”), putting a larger portion of its submarines to sea and returning heavy bombers to alert, to increase their survivability.

I guess for a guy so busy running for President that he does not have time to chair a hearing on NATO or U.S. military policy in Europe it is understandable that he would be misinformed about fundamental facts about the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Let’s watch Barack defend eliminating the President’s ability to respond in a timely manner if we are attacked by nukes. Because, regardless of his magical rhetorical tap dancing, that is what his Republican opponent will seize on. And Obama cannot pretend he did not say it.

Wonder if he got that from the “brilliant” Samantha Powers.

    • Simon

Wonder if he got that from the “brilliant” Samantha Powers

      Does she support him?

Too bad, and she is brilliant, an excellent writer.

Take note, have you read her work?

I think, sometimes, people really don’t understand how sophisticated US defense is, even, say, the idiot lightweights who work for Cheney, and Bush.

      Now, boy, that’s the anti-brilliant.

But that’s probably what they want.

The more Obama opens his mouth, the more ignorant he reveals himself to be, he simply does not know what he’s doing, and fooling Kos is a lot different from fooling real military.

Gosh, fooling Kos is like fooling soc.men, big fucking deal, they’re all morons.

Soc.men, who don’t understand what it means to “critically think,” and wonder what the big deal is about critical thinking, anyway?

      And they mean it.

People have to look at the mess Cheney created, and understand it’s because he simply didn’t know what the fuck he was doing, it was unintentional, on Cheney’s part.

And I think a large part of decision making was motivated by his allegiance to OPEC, we all understand the master slave dynamic, and Cheney, and Bush, are the slaves to those billions of dollars, bought and paid for.

And it will be the same with Obama, as he’s pledged to the same crew, the stupidest men on earth, soc.men who really aren’t intellectually capable of understanding the international dynamic of security.

Unsophisticated men who only see themselves, unable to make critical decisions, again, creatures of narcissistic delusion.

And it shows, by the current mess we’re in, the White House in so much personal chaos, always terrified by the people they’re dealing with, they can’t give it up fast enough…

It’s the Israelis I feel sad for, Cheney and Bush’s policies will affect them the most…

It’s so easy to put one over on those idiots, and they’re frightened little men, depending on Blackwater, their allegiance only to the dollar, rather than country. But the silly little narcissists aren’t capable of accurately assessing their own weaknesses, so they can’t properly assess their enemies weaknesses.

And Blackwater is not the Pentagon, not even close.

      Bush’s people are fucking morons.

  • Patrick Henry

No…Austin Powers..Thats where you get the real :Spy” Stuff..

    • barbh

I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!

  • Daniel

    Larry,

Stop defending military pork. When systems work, they should be used. When they don’t they should be defunded and REAL solutions should be sought.

    • http://NoQuarterUSA.net Larry Johnson

Agreed. But a smart candidate would say something along these lines:

“I believe first and foremost in protecting America from foreign threats and ensuring we have the latest technology available to protect our people from threats, such as missile attacks. In tandem with this, I also believe we must protect the pocketbooks of Americans. The President cannot sign a blank check to defense contractors. When I am President I will ensure that the weapon systems developed to protect America are cost efficient and effective.”

Obviously, this is too nuanced and complicated a position for Obama.

      • Ned Bulous

Well, we see how well ‘nuance’ worked in the last election with Kerry. Obama is VERY intelligent and has been far better than Hillary during this campaing. She and her supporters are really coming unglued! BTW, what is Hillary’s position with regard to nukes? Is her position demonstrably different than Obama’s?

And who exactly do you support? I know that you’re a registered Republican, which would explain all the Obama bashing around here. Are you rooting for Hillary because she’s easier to beat in the fall (like Rush Limbaugh, who’s encouraging listeners in OH and TX to vote for her)?

        • Simon

          Ned,

          You dont’ matter.

          Try something new.

        • Kathy

          Bulous

How would you know Obama is VERY intelligent? I haven’t seen anything yet that would indicate that he is
VERY intelligent. Somebody told you that and you believed them–right?

      • TeakWoodKite

“The President cannot sign a blank check to defense contractors.”

Larry, seems that this is an other elephant in the room. The MIC is going to make real sure they are not frozen shrimp, come November. When Bush leaves, his cronies that are embedded in the no bid contracting/procurement trough will be slow to follow. Do you think there will be much change in how defense dollars are channeled?

  • Kathleen

Larry when did Obama say that the Presidents ability to respond in a timely manner if we are attacked by nukes should be “eleminated”?

    • CK

      @ Kathleen
Obama did not say that, that is just Larry doing a bit of spring plowing for the McCain folks.
Ready alert status is boilerplate for immediately able to launch instead of the five or six minutes it takes to open the satchel and verify the daily codes and then have the guys in the silos do the launch thing.
American nuke launch policy is so tight that no nukes ever get out of hand, sit around some airfield for hours and then fly around the USA without anyone knowing where they are. That sort of stuff just does not happen. The USAF told us that just a few days ago.

      • Simon

Obama did not say that, that is just Larry doing a bit of spring plowing for the McCain folks.

Then he’d be silly to count Clinton out, wouldn’t he?

Even is she loses the nomination.

  • Kathleen

    sorry “eliminated”

    • http://NoQuarterUSA.net Larry Johnson

When you “take off the hair trigger” as Obama calls it, you eliminate the President’s ability to respond in a timely manner. That’s the point.

      • Kathleen

        get it

  • CK

So how long is the lead time? Over the horizon radar and satellite gives the US a 45 minute lead from launch in Russia or China, longer if the launch is from India, Pakistan, Israel, or South Africa ( if they still have theirs) shorter if from UK or France.
The only responses to a verified launch is for the US to either take it or to Launch back. Until the US can finagle those ABM bases into Poland and Czechoslovakia there isn’t much else one can do now is there.
Never learn. The USA puts Jupiter missles into Turkey and then gets all surprised that the old USSR decides to do tit for tat and put a few into Cuba.
Now the USA just has to try to put ABMs into the old Warsaw pact nations. Must be the Hagee influence at work. First strike capability, nuke blackmail, bring on Armageddon for the dispensationalists.
There just might be a better way to handle relations with the rest of the world. Bankrupt nations might find it intelligent to tone down the belligerence.
Now how did that Chinese sub get so close to the Asia fleet undetected?

    • TeakWoodKite

“Now how did that Chinese sub get so close to the Asia fleet undetected?”

That one is still on the backburner…I am sure the Captains of each boat in that fleet is thinking they are sure glad it wasn’t the last thing they thought. Perhaps China got some of that Swedish technology and were surprised to be the first ones to find out. I wonder were the flank was.Maybe a bottom fish.

Larry I just attended my second Obama event. Talked with around 40 students.( big crowd) Kept asking why they were supporting OBama and more often than not they would respond with “hope, change, a new direction, new face etc”. When we did get pass the Obama mantra’s I heard quite a few students say that they really supported Obama’s willingness to talk to leaders of other nations even our enemies without preconditions. Some of their arguments were more impressive than anything else I had heard come out of any other O supporters.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

“I heard quite a few students say that they really supported Obama’s willingness to talk to leaders of other nations even our enemies without preconditions”

Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan did alright in that department too sometimes.

      • Simon

I heard quite a few students say that they really supported Obama’s willingness to talk to leaders of other nations even our enemies without preconditions

No, you can’t do this, it sets up a dynamic that is not advantageous to US strategic position.

Peace through intelligent reasoned JFK-like strength, not kumbaya.

        JFK was a fighter.

Boy, oh boy, do people really think Iran is OK, a little talk to will solve the problem?

        It’s not.

This is the same POV from Obama that thinks compromise with the republicans is possible ( if he weren’t being a disingenuous little creep).

It’s not possible, if it were, there would be no problem.

      • kathleen

Just got sound on this computer and listened to the Obama tape. He said “I don’t switch positions”. The problem for me is that when Obama has the chance to take a position or draw a line in the cement he does not.

I think Hillary should call him out on his fence sitting position on the Kyl Lieberman amendment. (how in fuck can he paint himself as an anti-war candidate?) While I do not like her vote on this at least she was brave enough to take a stand.

Susan I will write a bit about what I witnessed at the Michelle Obama event here at Ohio.U. when it is more appropriate.

One thing that worried me is the three young men who were sitting next to me in the Templeton Blackburn Memorial Auditorium. I asked why they were there. They proudly admitted to being McCain supporters and they insisted spewing the lies about WMD’s. Our conversation was heated (kind of comical) although they did admit to wanting to see what kind of strategy that they (Republicans) could develop against Obama if he wins.

At both of the Obama events I keep feeling like an observer of a Tidal Wave and that there are sucking sounds and the tide has been pulled out further than I have ever witnessed before, fish flapping on the shore, all of the critters with any instincts left have run to higher ground because they know what happens when a Tidal Wave hits. There is something eerie about the Obama campaign, something unsettling, just too orchestrated.

        • TeakWoodKite

I think you put a finger on it earlier, Kathleen. You mentioned the signage issue. When message discipline gets to point you described, I would start looking around for Nurse Rachet. I really wish you had a video camera to post with. (you could wear the Gorilla suit for anonymity) I look forward to reading more of what you experienced.

          • kathleen

friends have tried to get me to video tape the folks I talk with (don’t mind saying I can get almost anyone to talk, because I really like to hear what makes people tick and what they have to say)

        • Simon

          Kathleen wrote:

The Obama supporters struck you this way?

          Can you explain, more?

          Thank you.

          • Kathleen

The majority of the Obama supporters I talk with have few specifics about why they are supporting Obama. They really do respond with the packaged responses, “hope, change, new face, fresh face etc.” There have been a few I repeat a few (an I know that I have talked with at least several hundred Obama supporters, (two weeks in Charleston South Carolina prior to the primary there etc) There have been some Obama supporters who have said that they really appreciate Obama’s willingness to meet with foreign leaders without “preconditions”

These zombie like responses along with the carefully orchestrated O spin machine in full swing is disturbing. Folks seemed to be swept away in this machine like a tidal wave.

Few folks have read about his history, have not even gone to HIllary or Obama’s websites.

            Not much thinking going on

            • Simon

Remember there was a preacher named Amiee McPherson, in fact there was a TV movie about her, but I don’t remember who starred.

This is what the Obama rallies sound like, your description matches what was said about her, but she was a product of the 20′s.

I’ll research it, really interesting take, to think Obama, and his supporters, are like Amiee McPherson and her group.

              http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aimee_Semple_McPherson

(Ha! According to wikipedia, the character Eli, the preacher, from “There Will Be Blood” was based on McPherson, as written by Upton Sinclair, also a Chicagoan, like the Bama. The Holy Bama. Sorry, as long as we’re getting all religious, here…)

Thank you, keep writing, your reports are very interesting, an eye view we other wise wouldn’t have.

Why do you think the Obama supporters are “brain washed,” and you “escaped,” what do you think they have in common?

              • Simon

                The dali bama.

        • barbh

I am so enjoying your analysis on this. It seems that people are somehow overcome psychologically at these rallies or?? I almost feel like they are employing some sort of mind control techniques or maybe it’s like a primal kind of herding instinct? It’s weird, he must be much more magnetic in person, I don’t get it when I see him on TV, he seems to repeat exactly the same thing an awful lot everywhere he goes and on the debates he just about puts me to sleep every time he talks, he seems like he is one of these people that drone on incessantly about total bullshit. I’ve had the misfortune to meet men like that in my foolish youth. I’m older and wiser and can spot it at 100 paces now though and he definitely has the BS factor down pat.

          • Kathleen

He is dynamic in person and so is Bill Clinton. Both of these guys seem to have that “intangible” star quality. This quality does not mean you will do a good job.

This morning the Obama campaign called this phenomena as a “movement”. There really is an eerie quality to the “movement”

            • Kathy

I’ve been telling everyone for a month that there is something wrong here. How do you move thousands and thousands of people in this day and age. I keep remembering Chris Matthews talking about the electricity that went up his leg when he was at an Obama rally and heard him speak. I can’t believe that old cynic would have any ripple going up his leg at a political rally. He has heard them all and has been around politicians too long to be creeped out. What is going on? I wish somebody would investigate.

I know I sound like a broken record, I know it is crazy, but I feel fear for this country. I know it is irrational but deep down I feel fear. I felt it the first time I laid eyes on BO.

    • Salo

      children’s crusade. Why ?

      because we caN@! F84@it!

  • Ga6thDem

Obama’s problem is that he says things but doesn’t explain them further. For example, if you want to get rid of missle defense you should say WHY not just “get rid of it” because it makes him look clueless. I think we should get rid of missile defense because it doesn’t work. You have to sell people on your ideas not just spew them out there for everyone else to get by osmosis.

  • Steven B.

        Figures.

        • Ned Bulous

          • TeakWoodKite

If he writes so well please tell me what he wrote while at Harvard Law Review? or for that matter what did he do his thesis on? How about State Senator?…BO has even admitted that his two books contain falsehoods. OP’eds? NO?

Dismiss him at your peril, is code for self dought gone unexpressed. The side effects are listed on the side of the kool-aid jar.

          • Simon

            Neb,

You’re drowning in your spin, foo.

This is the point he starts to feel effective, and he isn’t.

Now imagine this is a political team that represents the president, and it’s scary, isn’t it?

If you’re a REAL psy ops, you can make them do anything, they can’t tell the real from the unreal, because their form of game is amatuer crap.

And they’re too narcissistic, too stupid to even KNOW they’re fucked, but, still, they simply can’t achieve their goals, that they know, and they’re stuck in the moment. But they never ever vary method of attack, and it’s less and less effective every time, resulting in more chaos, and breakdown, for them.

Everyone can see them, but they can’t see themselves.

  • Ned Bulous

I did some research and it looks like Hillary has some BIGGER problems with nuclear technology:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/us/politics/31donor.html?bl&ex=1201928400&en=34871ee7da314ab4&ei=5087

Bill Clinton evidently helped some shady characters purchase uranium mines in Kazahkstan. He even PRAISED the Kazahkstani government in the process and lent legitimacy to the brutal regime. Now what could go wrong with that? It’s not like uranium from these mines could end up in the wrong hands or anything, is it?

Well, at least the Clintons received $131 MILLION dollars in exchange for Bill’s trouble! I guess we know why she won’t release her tax returns. . .

    • Simon

Bill Clinton evidently helped some shady characters purchase uranium mines in Kazahkstan.

Well, thanks Foo, news I can finally use.

But still, you know, it dosen’t go back to say, Saudi control, or worse, of Obama.

      Or Bush.

      Which explains everything.

    • Kathleen

      Afghanistan has lots of uranium

  • Uday and Qusay

What the hell is the point of having nukes if they are not ready to launch?

Sorta negates the entire point of having an Arsenal at all.

  • Uday and Qusay

    Quick question:

How does this nuclear disarmament affect Iran Policy? Seems like an obvious follow on.

    • TeakWoodKite

      Quick answer:
      It doesn’t.

      • Salo

It most certainly does. Banning material production means you have to keep bullying Iran

        • TeakWoodKite

Iran will do what is Irans interest. And at this point in time I don’t see much desire to not go nuclear or disarm.
I am interest in what you mean exactly.

When the Sauds and the gulf states unpeg from the dollar and want to be paid in a more stable and trustworthy currency, where will the buyers in the US get rubles, riyals, yen, Yuan or Euros to pay for the oil? It will be, as Greenspan has been showing them, rational to depeg. So the administration is filling the national reserves. Military movement needs a lot of POL, DHS needs a lot of gas for its SUVs. But on a brighter note, I, that would be ME, personally, have done my part to help make the banks fail. I have paid off all my credit cards. I owe not one bank not one red pfennig; and have closed the accounts. The paying off is good but the closing of the accounts reduces the banks assets by the size of the credit line that was available. I feel so clean … it’s like a thrill running up my leg all the way to my wallet.

Ok, given the past few days, the OPEC money shakers, too?

Just a rhetorical question, how are they affected?

And the US economy is still relevant to the world economy, US talent is still relevant, despite what we think we see when we have to watch Chris Matthews…

Hillary has demonstrated poor judgement time and again. She has also stubbornly refused to admit when she’s wrong. . .

      Sound familiar?

Your fear-mongering sounds quite like the GOP’s tactics, but there’s no evidence that experience trumps good judgement. In fact, Bill CLinton had NO FOREIGN POLICY experience when he took office. Obama has far more experience from his time in the Senate Foreign Relations committee than Bill had.

If experience is what matters, wouldn’t Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and Dick Rumsfeld be GENIUSES in terms of foreign policy? As first lady, Hillary did not have security clearance, nor was she present at cabinet meetings. Would you consider Laura Bush’s time at the White House as experience in dealing with foreign policy?

Obama has demonstrated good judgement, excellent temperament, exceptional intelligence, and the ability to bring people together. His election will also send a message to the rest of the world- that we are multicultural and not against people of Muslim descent, and that we are not a country ruled by dynasties. Hillary Clinton would make a good Secretary of State (or Supreme Court Justice) if she stops her ‘slash and burn do anything to win’ tactics.

      • Simon

Hillary has demonstrated poor judgement time and again. She has also stubbornly refused to admit when she’s wrong. . .

        Do you really believe this?

        Now you’re delusional.

But Feingold got caught up in the Obama crap, oh wait, the Obama moevment, a “barry movement,” a BM (Obama’s people just keep sticking their foot in it, sometimes it pays to be a little paranoid, lol)so I’m not getting my hopes up about Biden, wishing for at least one independent Senator, capable of doing the right thing by this country, and not his own cowardly ego.

I was wondering several years back(?) late 06,how the compression of the middle class would express it self politically. The rhetoric did not bother to swing thru the middle, it just went over the top and stayed in an extreme place. All this Hope and change crap has “frozen” the electorate in the same place prior to Obama running. He is being used. I am sure he knows this. To what extent he thinks he can ride the magic carpet and betray “them that brought ‘em” is becoming more apparent every day. He has played Blacks against hispanics, blacks against white, disparaged people of the East, Gays and women …crap I can’t think of a group he has not baited while saying “talk to the hand” . His supporters are more concerned with “making history” than the common welfare, and from what I have seen of their behavior and comments portray a very good look a like of the Gorn.

Obama will NOT heal shit. He will at every turn divide this nation culturally. I strongly believe there will be riots if he wins or looses. Such animosity was seen in pre WWII germany. John Dean had it right when talks about authoritarian leaders and followers. Obama is just one more example of arrogant entitlement gone a muck mixed in with other people agendas. he will never take a stand on anything for long and he is NOT a leader just a false prophet. He admits to “borrowing the pastors words “the audasity of (bullshit) hope, he admits to “borrowing” the Mass governors words for words, as in Hannibal Lecture pointing out (thanks Mr Murder) the first principle is “He Covets” and there is only death and misfortune in this.

    Read this Mr. Ned:
NY Times failed to note Giustra reportedly involved in Kazakhstan mining deals more than a decade ago
Summary: In an article about former President Bill Clinton’s September 2005 trip to Kazakhstan with Canadian mining financier Frank Giustra, The New York Times suggested that Giustra was able to secure agreements giving his company the right to buy into Kazakh mining projects because of his connection to Clinton. The Times did not note that Giustra was reportedly involved in Kazakh mining deals more than a decade ago.

I have every intention of voting for Hillary Clinton, but I never turn a blind eye toward what might be corrupt.

But still, nothing is as bad as the opec oil men, and Bush, Cheney and Obama, and the impact it has had on American policy, both domestic and foreign.

Obama’s extreme lack of knowledge of the military or National security matters is just one of the major reasons we need to donate to Senator Clinton’s campaign. She understands the military AND the culture of the military.

The more I learn about Obama the more I’m SHOCKED that anyone at all would even consider voting for him (or have voted for him).

The attacks from the Obamabots seems very emotional — and hysterical — no facts just a whole lot of screaming.

I’m not willing to put the military under the command of an ignorant fool like Obama.

THIS campaign is FAR from over — and Hillary is a fighter — she is fighting for us — and she has a proven record of fighting for the VETERANS! Obama has done nothing for the military VETERANS in his own state.

I trust Larry Johnson’s opinion on this matter — that Obama is Ignorant of Defense. Plus I’m a military brat — born in a military hospital, grew up on military bases until I was in college. I KNOW the Navy — and I know that the military is well aware of the empty suit that Obama is.

Larry, I have found limited appeal in your board since you have taken an entirely political strategy.

As my father was an ex MOD man and at the time the “cold war” was still well in place, I remember him lecturing me on the virtues of nuclear deterent. The principle is that no “Country” would be foolhardy enough to launch nuclear weapons and force the retaliation of another. This is fine if you simplify things to Russian and the US, but why would the biggest aggressor in the world stop at Russia?

Of course we know that Kennedy and Nixon were close to launching nukes. In the case of Nixon it was against a country that couldn’t possibly defend itself – the then “Afghanestan”. We know that Billy Clinton dropped a lot of nuclear material on Iraq which saw a massive increase in cancers and other health problems incurred by the Iraqi people. But it must have been ethical as it was against Saddam, right, Shirin?

You have a leader in the United States who has promised to nuke Iran, although as with most of his promises it looks like that one’s died the death (thank goodness). The toll of a nuclear war would be measured long after the actual event, so nuclear weapons are just another item in the nasty itinery. Therefore I am all for Obama’s suggestion. To start the process of disarmament you first have to take your finger off the trigger. I do not believe from a wholistic position that a nuclear attack would do sufficient damage to parayise a country’s war ambitions or defense ambitions. But I do believe with Her arsenal that the US could make life hell for any country She wished. That is a situation that makes me extremely uncomfortable as a world citizen, considering the track record of the incumbent Administration.

You speak as if the US has no enemies, and that is simply not true.

Given, you’re a bit off the track here, I won’t bite, but what is most apparent is the lack of realism in facing US threat, or for that matter, reacting to it.

Yes America has enemies, but no, we don’t need to nuke them, in the manner of dirk diggler cheney.

We do have brilliant chess players in this country, but what you see, currently, doesn’t represent the best.

The best players don’t come from the Obama or Bush camps, you know?

I would love to hear you father’s take on the cold war if you ever choose to write about it, a lot to learn there.

Maybe you’re right. But it was Carter who set up the Afghanistan offensive against the USSR, which broke them, eventually.

Some say what we’re experiencing in the Middle East NOW is Russia’s revenge, the bad taste still lingering.

And Bush and Cheney slaves to Opec oil, not the best group to control your army.

At least we have Gates, truly worthy of his position.

The rest in that group are posers, the empty headed narcissistic boys.
