Who would you vote for? (Wide Open Thread)

Watch the two gentleman in this video, and tell me who you’d vote for. Not Obama or Clinton. Which of these two Ohioans would you vote for? Kevin Conwell of the Cleveland City Council or Eugene Miller, Democratic congressman? And why?

Whew. Got the correct video up this time! [THANKS, JIM, for sending me the link, and for helping me with the code.]

What else is going on in the world?

i can’t express it better than this letter to
    NYT editor:

    …………………………………..

    To the Editor:

Re “Begrudging His Bedazzling,” by Maureen Dowd (column, Feb. 27):

Ms. Dowd says Hillary Rodham Clinton is lame for accusing journalists of treating her campaign differently than they treat Barack Obama’s, and applauds the “open-mindedness of the press” in its treatment of Senator Clinton.

Here are the words she uses in association with Senator Clinton: “desperate,” “primal scream,” “clanging,” “churlish,” “discombobulated,” “gloomy,” “flipping,” “begrudging,” “whining,” “experience,” “pea green with envy,” “Sybil,” “cascading,” “dizzying,” “unsettling,” “struggling,” “tartly,” “peevishly,” “pointlessly,” “sarcasm.”

And here are the words she uses for Senator Obama: “golden child,” “sunny,” “consistency,” “bedazzling,” “confidence,” “excitement,” “exceptionally easy in his skin.”

If Ms. Dowd wants to make the point that she doesn’t like Senator Clinton, then she’s made it. If she wants to make the point that the press treats Mrs. Clinton fairly, contrary to what the senator may believe, then this column, alas, has made Senator Clinton’s point.

That is a heck of a letter. Must share it with my pals.

Maureen Dowd claims to be a “liberal” when she is anything but. She pulled out all the stops on Al Gore in 2000 and she is doing it with Hillary Clinton.

Maureen is a woman’s worst nightmare. She can’t land a husband; although from my own sources she has turnstile on her bedroom door, and likes to be the only woman in a room full of men. She was always going on Don Imus’s show to pimp some new piece of crap like her lame ass book “Do women need men?”

Her family are old-line Virginia Republicans…

She is one of those Southerners who thinks that electing a black man to the presidency, however unqualified he may be, negates her “Scarlett O’hara” kinsfolk for having owned slaves.

I have seen her on Bill Maher’s show twice. She playa coy most of the time and does not react until given a direct question.

I chalked up to writers not having the performer gene.

    Always has great hair, thoiugh.

Thank you Patrick Henry. It is so nice coming to a website where there are others who have not drunk the Kool-Aid.

I think this is going to be a big story by tomorrow. CVT has reconfirmed the story about Obama communicating to the Canadian government a position 180 degrees opposite to the one he intended to, and has taken with the voters.

  • Andy

Congressman Miller HANDS DOWN !!! He has guts!! He is articulate and most importantly he THINKS !! Really impressive I loved his “if I use my head” and what he said about his daughters.

I am sorry for Conwell’s constituency… he had nothing to say but repeat 3 talking points and Barcak Obama’s name 10 times. I am sorry, but I confess I couldn’t help LOL.

  • Harry Ballantyne

I vote for Barack Obama! I would NOT vote for any Repugnik–especially not one like McCain. As far as the Current Occupant is concerned, he must be asleep at the wheel, not knowing where the price of gasoline is going. I think Obama is right–the one most to blame for the upcoming recession is the Current Occupant. Bush must have gotten to Benanke, because Benanke sure changed his tune today from the one he was playing yesterday! Today, Benanke only parroted what it sounded like Bush wanted him to say. (It was the fastest change I ever saw anyone make.)

I love that video with the surrogates, it’s just like the Clinton/Obama debates, she has all the ideas and he says “me too”

I send Rep Eugene Miller an email thanking him for his support at the address below

How neat. Wonder if he needs a few dollars for his campaign? Can someone look for that? We could all send him at least $5 or something. He is GOOD! We need public servants like him who speak up so proudly for their daughters.

Uh, I’m sorry…but which one of them dropped out of school?!

Good grief, what a stark comparison. Dopey Guy couldn’t gave sounded and looked less sincere if he tried.

Here’s Michele playing the racist/faith card again (does she only know how to divide?)…

    http://weblogs.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/blog/2008/02/michelle_obama_name_hussein_is.html

If both weren’t such hypocrites they would’ve spoken out against the treatment of Romney and Huckabee, as religion has no color or political boundaries.

O-Bomba and his wife should just go back to the Jackson, Sharpton and Farrakhan School of Racial and Religious Division. They’re so one sided they can’t appreciate tolerance of diversity — be it with color, faith or even speech (I will call O-Bomba any name in the book, as I careless about PCness. I’m wise enough to know you can’t get 1 person to agree with you 100% of the time. A 1000? Forget it!).

This NAFTA epic gonna sting someone pretty badly. When we get to the bottom of it, we will know who has been lying.

  • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

I must say that I get bad vibes from her. A lot of anger and hostility. WIll go read the piece shortly. Got something else to do … hmmm … what would that be?

  • Sam

How can the mainstream media not even try to go after the NAFTA story? What is wrong with these idiotic newscasters. It is amazing how the job of a journalist these days is to take everyone except Hillary Clinton at their word. Drudge said so, so it must be true. A canadian official said so, so it must be true. Barack Obama said so, so it MUST be true. Hillary Clinton said so? That lying b****. These journalists are just sick. I felt SOOO angry at Brian Williams on Jon Stewart being all like “I was curious” about what Hillary meant when she said she was “curious” about why she gets the first question all the time…UGH.

Rep. Miller was awesome, I sent him a nice email thanking him and asking where I could send some funds. I will let people know if I get the info on where to make donations.

  • Frostback

Uh-oh. A much tidier version of this link is upthread. Admin – delete this post?

“What America needs, she added, is a ‘fundamentally different kind of leadership,’ one that challenges people to be different, and better to one another.” – Michelle Obama

    ———

All of those Obama supporters at the BSOTU sure were “different and better” to Bill Clinton, weren’t they? They gave Dick Gregory a standing-O for ripping Bill Clinton to shreds (Donna Brazille sure loved it).
Yeah, we need Barack Obama alright.

  • Andy

    I want to ask a controversial question….

Could someone explain why all the public formal apologies to Obama for using his full name.

Ok. I am not naive I know the intention of some.

But on the other hand if he is not comfortable using it freely and cannot get people used to his middle name and use it as any other normal person would, then what does this say? About him and his supporters? he is “the one” that is making it to be something wrong with it, I think.

I guess, he could have changed his name long agao if he didn’t want anyone to refer to him that way…

And if he ends up being the president; how would he be called? Because we had, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), John Fitzerald Kennedy (JFK),
George Herbert Walker Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, George Walker Bush(GWB).

Is even Barack H. Obama forbidden ?

    What do you think?

  • Frostback

I’ve read every excuse in the book for his having ditched this event. I still think it would have been the perfect opportunity for him to work toward “healing” the divisiveness.

  • Patrick Henry

Well…We often referred to John Kennedy as JFK..or even John Fitzgerald Kennedy..no body seemed to mind or object..

Guess Baracks a little sensetive about his Muslim Name..Hussein…what with Saddam and all
But then the Name BARACK..has special significance to all Muslims to..and He uses that..Look it up sometime..

Guess we could just call him “B.O.” if thats what he prefers.. unless He tells the Media He doesn’t mind being Called HUSSEIN..and to quite making a big deal out of it..

    NAH..it Plays to well..

  • http://thehorizontalworld.blogspot.com/ Mary Jo Kopechne

I’d say Mr. Miller has a future in politics. I learned a few things about Ohio and how he sees HRC’s agenda as a necessity for the well being of his constituents. I feet embarrassed for Mr. Conwell He sounds like those star struck Obamabots who chant his name but never say anything of substance, much like the candidate himself.

  • ChrisXP

    From the article:
    ——————————————————————————————————–
Sources at the highest levels of the Canadian government — who first told CTV that a call was made from the Obama camp — have reconfirmed their position.
    ——————————————————————————————————–

Ohhhhhhhhhh. This is going to bite!

The US MSM better get their act together, because even the top officials in Canada is claiming, in fact, O-Bomba’s representative contacted the Ambassador. Short of the PM stating it’s true, you’re not going to get higher authority on the matter.

    Finally, a story with legs!

  • TeakWoodKite

“Barack Obama will be the kind of leader we need right now, not in four years or eight years or 12 years,” she said. “We can’t wait to get this right. We need it to happen today.”

So I am take from the bold part of the quote that her husband is not “right” for the Job?
    (from ChrisXP’s link above)

  • lois

I must say I felt bad for Mr. Conwell. He was obviously nervous. Not that it excuses him but, yanno the Obama camp needs to upgrade the surrogates. Obviously they prepped him with the company lines. Did you notice how much he sounded like John Lewis? It’s …well…scary. ” There has been an incredible wave….for…uh…Obama.”

  • TeakWoodKite

During the debate Barak Obama when reacting to the “photo”, did not say “whatever, it just a silly photograph” he was coming across like it was some kind of insult.

If he thought in hindsight, it was a big deal he should relize he is responsible for the picture in the first place.

  • TeakWoodKite

On Thursday night, CTV spoke with Goolsbee, but he refused to say whether he had such a conversation with the Canadian government office in Chicago. He also said he has been told to direct any question to the campaign headquarters.

Sounds like he is shutting up like a clam at low tide.

  • ChrisXP

They know it’s going to hurt O-Bomba v-e-r-y badly.

To tell a foreign government that their NAFTA speeches was just campaign rhetoric, tells us what is in store with O-Bomba as a president — like lying to Americans, then back-dealing with foreigners.

  • Fred C. Dobbs

You mean like George Hideous Wanker Bush making deals with the Iranians RE: hostages and military goods BEFORE the 1980 election?

    That kind of scum-sucking double-dealing?

  • ChrisXP

    He’s embarassed of his ancestry.

O-Bomba is trying to play being Black to get the sympathy from that community, and trying to ride the coat tails of 100% Blacks (who can’t fall back on White money and graces) like MLK, Jr.

The Black community is going to turn on O-Bomba folks, as they know he’s truly not one of them. One little slight that was attributed to Bill Clinton, is enough for him to fall. That’s the plight of being biracial — you’re not fully trusted by either side of the coin. O-Bomba knows this, and does his best to not point out his mixed heritage (covering it up with rhetoric about “American people” instead).

He doesn’t care about using his name, he cares that folks see through the smoke screen, instead.

  • ChrisXP

    Huh? G.H.W. Bush wasn’t a president in 1980, or even a VP.

Are kids even flunking revisionist history now????

  • ChrisXP

You mean Bore-rack back the USA to 1000AD?

Yep, that’s how these demi-gods work. Ask the Germans and Japanese for a real history lesson.

  • Fed Up

I saw the segment when it aired. It’s probably a safe bet that the campaign won’t be asking Mr. Conwell to speak for Obama on a national broadcast again any time soon. It wasn’t pretty.

That being said, I felt terrible for the guy. It must have been his first time on national TV and he basically looked scared shitless. I don’t blame him, I’m sure I would have been just as nervous. He certainly gets no points for style or substance but he deserves kudos for making the effort.

  • mimi

Finally, a fellow AA I can relate to! Good job Rep Miller.

I feel for John Lewis. I understand that the climate of Georgia politics is UGLY! That Democrats work with Republicans in some sort of vindictive game when they want to oust people. He looked like a man beaten down. Actually, so did Dodd the other day. It’s like the pod people in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The Democratic Party is in ruins right now. I guess that change is already in motion. Thanks Barack Hussein Obama! I hope you’re satisfied.

More bad news for O-Bomba (he’s bombing indeed!)…

    http://www.tboblogs.com/index.php/news/story/tampa-dems-get-hearing-on-lawsuit-over-primary/

    ———————————————————————————————————-
Vic DiMaio and Mike Steinberg, two Tampa Democrats who are challenging the national Democratic Party’s disavowal of the Florida primary, have appealed the dismissal of their lawsuit and will get a hearing with oral arguments in a federal appeals court.

The hearing will be March 17 before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.

Steinberg is a disabilities lawyer and a long-time Democratic Party activist in Tampa, recently elected Hillsborough County party chairman. DiMaio is a political consultant.

“What this tells me is they find this an interesting case,” Steinberg said of the court’s decision to grant a hearing.
    ———————————————————————————————————-

Finally, Florida voters don’t have to be disenfranchised AGAIN!

This isn’t just a handful of voters getting denied a vote, this is about 2 million! A party simply can’t use rules to deny a Constitutional right.

  • TeakWoodKite

lying to Americans, then back-dealing with foreigners.

Who’s campaign staff released a statement saying “Florida does not matter” ? 2 million people don’t matter?

Same for Michigan…all party BS aside.

    It’s a keeper, ChrisXP.

  • chris

yes friend, welcome. your voice expands our dynamic. thank you.

I agree with your comments about Daud, and expand to say, I have several friends who describe themselves as “white males” and they are going for Obama. When I show them the record of both candidates, they unanimously agree she has more RELEVANT experience. But…they are convinced that this will ‘bridge the divide’.

I called two of them out last week:
“So, what you are saying is….we elect Barack Obama, and it will be a sign that we’ve transcended our racist past in America?”
“yeah, exactly, not that it will have transcended it, but that it will be a beginning. It is what everyone (sic) wants”

“what is it that everyone wants”
they said, almost like recorders: “‘home’ and ‘change’, they want something different.”
one said, “america needs a paradigm shift”

But knowing these two men very well as friends, I know they mask their own racism. they are good men. they really believe their own shit. And as freinds, I love them as close as a brother. But being almost 20 and 40 years older…they are mired in their White Guilt too.

Both have confessed their White Guilt for as long as I’ve known them. They ask me to confess my White Guilt. I’m clear, I don’t have White Guilt.

I’m more concerned that as a man, i’ve been raised to treat women in some way that reinforces sexism. And I’m more concerned with diminishing the value of people’s opinions based on their apparent intelligence.

So, when you point out about Daud’s ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ moment, I see what you mean when looking at the conversation of people who are so eager to get past the racist past of America.

I think its fantastic that people believe this. I’ve wanted it my whole life. But seeing that they’ll continue to accept the Glass Ceiling for women, and will not stand up as a community against the hateful and ignorant sexist comments of our TV hosts, journalists, and citizens who shout: “Iron My Shirt” at rallies.

We went to the rally for Hillary tonight and I’ll post the video by morning. The moment of the night didn’t come from Clinton for me…it came when my 8 year old daughter said, very confused:
“uh…i’m confused…why can’t a woman be president, since mens (sic) can be president. that doesn’t make sense.”

At 8 years old in 2008, she already has experienced the feeling of the Glass Ceiling. She was so eager to meet Hillary, and …well we got about 8 ft from her, and she did get to meet her US Representative. She got a poster to take home, and was eager to see Hillary win.

She has to believe this country can accept a woman as president so she believes she has an equal shot. This is powerful shit. All the women around us were blown away at the innocent yet clear question the young girl asks as she looks at the symbol of her dreams too.
(note: her ambition is to be an art teacher)

I don’t want Hillary because she’ll releave me of my Male Chauvinist guilt. I want her because I know she’s got the job down pat on day one. I support her because I’ve considered her record, her positions, our disagreements, and her tact. She is ready to be Commander in Chief. She won me over fair and square by not blowing smoke up my ass, by being her tough and focused self.

Tomorrow I will specially go to early vote, so that on Tuesday i can participate in the caucuses without distraction. My vote will be for Hillary Clinton and it will be in as good a conscience as I had when I voted for Nader in 2000. I know then I made the unpopular but correct vote for me. Now I will do the same.

    VIDEO FROM RALLY COMING SHORTLY

    Fantastic letter!!

  • chris

quick note on racism and sexism:
I have believed for a while that dealing with racism for me was easier than sexism because it was already a loud conversation as I grew up in the South. I’ve been surrounded by people who weren’t racist up till my mid teens. Then I got hit by it hard when I got in high school.

Racism has been a hot topic for all my life. I was born in the late 60s. But sexism is still a mystery to so many. It is more acceptable to be a pig than a racist. If you whistle at a woman on the street you aren’t likely to get beat down, but call people a racist name or show your racist tendencies and society will beat you down now. I believe it is this is motivated by extended guilt within the community.

Thus I conclude that in our society, most believe it is more acceptable to down your sisters, daughters and mothers, than it is to call someone racist names, engage in racist behavior or innuendo. Sexism is still the undiscovered sore that plagues all our cultural communities. Conquer our problems there and we’ll have made HUGE progress.

  • chris

    here here.
I just sent my first campaign contribution to Hillary. I’ll match the same for this fine representative who believes he may have jeopardized his seat by being honest to his heart and his daughters’ futures. support him.

  • ChrisXP

See why he’s supporting Hillary — he sponsored bills in his state on health issues for his community (Sickle cell anemia and Breast Cancer).

He wouldn’t just change because of race, he’s more interested in serving his race with better healthcare.

More than can be said about O-Bomba.

  • JP

It’s a game they love to play. This fear and racism card has proved very useful for the O camp and they will drive it home as long as they can. I would not be surprised if it was revealed that they are behind pushing the use of his middle name. The more they can ‘talk’ about how silly all kind of rhetoric about his middle name is, the less will be focused on their ‘actions’ and ‘associations’.

Once again a lot of talk from the O camp to cover up their actions.

  • ChrisXP

Let’s see if the MSM will do their job, not just being a mouthpiece for O-Bomba.

Swear the press is taking lessons from Goebbels, Jr.

  • Fred C. Dobbs

    >>> Huh? G.H.W. Bush wasn’t a president in 1980, or even a VP.

My point precisely. Not having a Portfolio from the Carter government (J C was president then) the slimy oral copulator hauled his ass to make a deal with the Iranians to keep holding onto the Embassy hostages until after the 1980 election.

  • ChrisXP

Don’t blame Lewis, his hands are tied. The GOP would l-o-v-e to oust him, and with the help of Dems with revenge in their hearts, it’s possible.

How did Sonny Perdue become the only Republican since Reconstruction to be governor of GA? With the help of Neo-Confederate Libertarians (I really despise Libertarians, and that includes the one masquerating as a Republican, Newt Gingrich), all over the flag flap.

That’s how politics works in GA. So expect any other Hillary supporter to get the same gunpoint treatment.

  • ChrisXP

It was my comment, thus, the quote separation above it. Will try the quote feature here next time to quell any confusion (use to vBulletin’s quoting tags…lol).

Sadly I had a somewhat similar conversation with my daughter over thirty years ago. We didn’t have a woman running back then but she asked me why we didn’t have women presidents in this country. I have sadly had the same conversation with two of my granddaughters.

I now have two great-granddaughters. I hope I don’t live long enough to have the same conversation with them. It’s not that the same conversation won’t be happening in households all across this country for years to come, I just don’t want to have to keep trying to find something to excuse the fact that this is a sexist nation.

  • http://questionbarackobama.com Steve Bac

This is exactly why it took 50 years between African-American Men and Women of all Color to get the right to vote.

And, it might take 50 years for a Women to follow an African-American into the role of President, if you look at the current situation in the Democratic nominee race.

I don’t agree with it and I find it sad.

  • ebonyscrews

I did catch that segment on Hardball because someone recommended I watch it. Side by side, Eugene Miller made such an impassioned, heartfelt, personal, and very compelling case for his support of Senator Clinton. Conversely, Conwell was not so compelling, and dare I say…lacking in passion and belief in his own candidate. He appeared to be trying to convince himself of his enthusiasm for Obama, parroting everything Miller said about Clinton–sort of like how Obama parrots Clinton and follows her lead with his responses on most critical issues. Miller said he’s up for re-election next week. If I can, I’m donating to his campaign as he impressed me with his sincerity in his dedication to his constituents in Ohio and his decency of character.

  • TeakWoodKite

Otherwise, she’s someone your best friend’s wife is trying to, “Set you up with,”… you know: “Great Dancer, Wonderful Personality, Makes Her Own Clothes.”

  • Lisa

Thank you, Chris, for that post. Your daughter is blessed. I’ve copied it to my husband and friends.

My twin sons asked the same thing. They’re studying the Presidents at Nursery school for the month and thought it “silly” that there weren’t any women. It was a very proud moment when one said, “you’re the president of our house.”

  • It’sNotMe

I saw that segment last night and kept waiting for Tweety to ask Conwell specifics about Mr. Hope’s policies because it was so obvious the man has no freakin’ clue about any of them. Of course Tweety didn’t put the guy on the spot. He’s already embarrassed one Mr. Hope supporter within the last week. He can’t expose them all for their lack of substance.

Someone mentioned on a blog that she was having a difficult time finding accurate information on the web doing a search for Hillary Clinton’s legislative achievements. She tried a few different searches and all of them turned up results that were neither what she was looking for or accurate information. Instead she was directed to pages of “opinions” of her legislative achievements and all of them slanted against her. This practice is called Goggle bombing and it is an affront to our democracy.

The Goggle Bombing of information is a practice designed to keep unbiased information away from people and to replace it with specifically biased information. You might say that it is the Faux News of Search Engines. It is undemocratic, actually closer to fascism than anything else. It dumbs down the electorate and suppresses the ability to make rational informed choices. That it is embraced by so-called progressives is perhaps the most frightening aspect of it. Ironically some of these same so-called progressives claim to support Net Neutrality.

This practice must cease immediately. There are consequences to stepping over lines. And one thing you don’t do is screw with our Democracy. Because we will screw back, longer and harder. And you won’t like it.

That video is hilarious and sad all at the same time. First of all, Kevin Conwell is an absolute idiot and every bit the droid. He sounded like some sort of robot. When he said Obama has a “sensitive ear to help the people” I just about passed out from laughter because those are some pretty strong looking ears he’s got on that head of his.

Congressman Miller just had more details, sounded more sensible, sane, etc. I’m going to send him an email right now as well and I’ll see if I can make a small donation to his campaign.

I’m going to post this video on my blog right now!
