More than 1 in 4 women, officers and enlisted, are either raped or sexually assaulted. More than 25% of our women in uniform are sexually assaulted. And they are assaulted by fellow military personnel (96%).

I believe this, every base I was stationed at there was a rape or several rapes. At basic traing we had a female on guard duty raped. The other female doing guard duty with her went to the bathroom and when she came out she was gone. They found her raped and beaten up.

Then when I was at AIT they basically had a lock down on women because someone was raping women on the base. Domestic violence and child abuse is also very high in the military. We went to a parenting/domestic violence class and were shocked when the woman gave us the statistics for the smallest military base compared to a city the size of Los Angeles. It's almost three to one for Domestic Violence and two to one for child abuse.

I feel a lot of it has to do with the mentality of telling men day after day that if the military wanted them to have wives and children they would assign them to them. This attitude has been going on for years and continues. It is this man's Army. Marine Corps. Women aren't wanted or needed. Which we ourselves heard all the time. The military is not going to change this behavior. If you consistently tell men that women are beneath them, that they and children are objects that the military would assign to them if they were needed. What do you think the outcome is going to be?

Which is also why I do not think...although many disagree with me that they should get rid of the do not ask rule. I've seen first hand what happens. I think all that is going to do is set people up for more violence and rape. The we will teach them a lesson mentality. Then you go pointing out to them who is gay you're going to make people a target. You have to first change the mentality.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the military. I learned many things. I'd do it all again, in fact if I could do it all again I'd stay till I retired. There was much more good than bad, but this is one area that needs to be fixed and it won't. I don't care how many programs they put in there. They already have many good programs, but then you have the mentality I talked about above. All it takes is for a few to believe and you've undone any good. The biggest hurdle for the military is that there isn't just a few, it ends up being close to half that get that mentality because it's beaten into their minds. Day after day, hour after hour.

Thank you for the great article.

Sassy, I admit, it was pretty hard to write. It haunts me still. Not only is it disturbing what is going on in these other countries (and I did see the article abt the 75 yr old women being lashed 40 times as part of her punishment), but what is happening to our women in uniform is STAGGERING. I agree with Naif below - there should be ZERO rapes of women in the military by their contemporaries. Zero.

Not like they haven't known for a while what a problem this is...

It does hark back to this primary/election season, or should I say, Open Season On Women? While I can't go camping for three months (COOL, Diana!), I will be going on vacation next month. It can't come soon enough...

Oh and don't worry, those following that we have puppies - our petsitter also works for our vet, and will be staying with the little darlings (3 dogs, 4 cats, 7 puppies). :-) (I must say - being able to go look at, and pet the pups, as well as listen to the CUTE sounds they make, helps to take some of the sting away...)

And here is another one from Saudi Arabia about a 75 year old widow who will be given 40 lashed, sent to prison and deported because her deceased husband's nephew brought her some bread. Since we have this relationship with the Muslim community courtesy of Barack Obama, and George W. Bush went to great lengths to allow Saudi royals to fly out of our country after the 9/11 terrorist attack while our own citizens were still grounded, you would think one of them would be compassionate enough to help this elderly woman... or do they agree with the Muslim doctrine?

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/03/09/Elderly_Saudi_woman_sentenced_to_lashings/UPI-

This is another act of terrorism; only not against the Muslim men and the countries they inhabit but against the women held hostage to this religion that Soertoro/Obama is spending so much of our tax money to help out. He should withdraw all financial support until these Muslim communities stop their war upon women. But with governments tacitly ignoring the plight of women world wide, nothing will change until we take the first steps to change it.

I'm with you. We're taking my grandchildren and going camping from June till September this year. Where we camp there is this huge brook that the deer drink from all day long. Then at night you can watch the black bears. The children love to ride down it on innertubes. They have this beautiful lake you can take the boat out on. We went for three weeks last year and no one wanted to come home. No TV, no phone. No newspaper. Perfect. Only difference is this year we won't be sleeping on the ground in tents. Since we're going for so long I'm buying a little travel trailer. My daughter and her husband already brought theirs. Plus we're taking the quads. It's a long walk to the bathroom and showers at night. ;)

Thanks Rev. Amy for your in-depth reporting on this issue. Where is our Military Justice system?
There should be ZERO assaults against our women in uniform. It is truly sickening.

The link below is the tragic story of one 14 year old Afghani that was raped and her attackers were tried in KABUL and then released.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8M3imVIfCI

Honor killings also occur. This is one brave family to fight the traditions of their country.

In the U.S., 600 women are raped every day of the year: http://www.now.org/issues/violence/stats.html

We must start in elementary school, and teach our young what is acceptable behavior, and what is AGAINST THE LAW. Thanks for your article.

This is very painful to read.
It also dredges up the hurts and disappointment of the campaign.
Sadly, many churches in this country expect women to "stay in their place".
Spring is approaching, and I am ready to sit on a boulder, by a gurgling mountain stream, with an apple, and the sun warming my back.
I need time to heal emotionally!

Additionally, Sayed Perwiz Kambakhsh, who protested against the treatment of women in Afghanistan, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for purportedly insulting Islam. His sentence had originally been death:
