SurveyUSA: Clinton Up 19 Points in Pennsylvania

I can’t believe that Obama follower Jonathan Singer posted this on MyDD’s front page. He usually only posts pro-Obama, anti-Clinton stories, as opposed to Todd Beeton and Jerome Armstrong, whose posts are more balanced overall. Or perhaps this is a warning to his fellow Obama followers to wake up:

Wow. Just wow,” Singer writes.

Obama Plays 2nd Fiddle to Clinton in Pennsylvania Democratic Primary: In a Democratic Primary in Pennsylvania today, 03/11/08, six weeks to the vote, Hillary Clinton defeats Barack Obama 55% to 36%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCAU-TV Philadelphia, KDKA-TV Pittsburgh, WHP-TV Harrisburg, and WNEP-TV Wilkes-Barre. Obama and Clinton are effectively tied in Southeast PA, which includes Philadelphia, but Clinton leads everywhere else. She is up 2:1 in SW PA, which includes Pittsburgh; is up 5:4 in South Central PA, which includes Harrisburg; is up 4:1 in West Central PA, which includes Johnstown; is up 5:3 in NE PA, which includes Wilkes-Barre; and is up 4:1 in NW PA, which includes Erie. Clinton leads 2:1 among whites; Obama leads 3:1 among blacks. Clinton leads by 5 among men, by 30 among women. She leads by 12 among those under age 50, leads by 26 among those age 50+. On the Economy, which is most important to Democratic voters in PA, Clinton leads by 24 points. On Health Care, next most important, Clinton leads by 32 points. Among voters focused on Iraq, the two are effectively tied.

Singer continues:

This poll puts Hillary Clinton’s lead over Barack Obama in Pennsylvania at nearly twice what it is in the Pollster.com trend estimate and the Real Clear Politics poll average — though that difference seems to entirely come from a higher proportion of respondents backing Clinton relative to other polls rather than a lower proportion backing Obama. This at least suggests that SurveyUSA is pushing leaners more than other polls, and that Clinton does quite well among leaners at this point.

Seems like PA is another Clinton Nation. Do you think Obama will be able to cut the lead in the next few weeks if he able to raise the target $100 million in March and out spend her ads in PA?

    • grannyhelen

My thoughts – it maybe possible in Philadelphia and the Brandywine area…but my gut feeling on the rest of the state is it’s strong Clinton territory.

  • grannyhelen

Not surprising – having visited Philadelphia and southern PA next to the DE border, it’s economy, economy, economy. Philadelphia is about the high murder rate (tied to the economy, or poor performance thereof, in the areas right outside Center City).

That being said…maybe this IS surprising to O folks who don’t know PA that well.

  • campskuk

well, maybe it’s because they’ve been democrats up in PA a LOT longer than the typical obama supporter. this is where the party drew its strength- the labor movement. for those of us who believe in history, this is the political breadbasket. these people know what the core democratic constituency is.

    New e-mail from Terry McAuliffe:

Hillary kicked off her Pennsylvania campaign in Scranton yesterday, where she was greeted by thousands of screaming supporters (“wildly enthusiastic,” according to the Scranton Times-Tribune) as she launched her campaign in the city where her father was born and raised.

Over the next six weeks, Hillary is going to rely on your support and dedication like she has throughout this campaign. Together, we can help her win big in Pennsylvania on the road to the nomination and the White House!

        And the notable quoteable:

“It’s time for cities and metropolitan areas to take their prominent place in America again.” Philadelphia, he said, needs “a friend in the White House.”

If I were Camp Hil I would run with that: “Hillary: Philadelphia’s Friend in the White House”.

Just has a ring to it…

          Great article GH!

Other polls show her up 12 and 14. This is way too soon. Obama supporters always grab the highest they can find, the farthest out and start spinning. We were ‘this far behind’ and now were are only ‘this far behind’. They will try to make it look like they have momentum. There line always has been ‘once people get to know him, they love him’. All he needs to do is get in a state, outspend Clinton 2-1 and it’s over?

The polls will tighten, they do, when people start paying attention.

It works better for Obama to say.. I was down by 19 and ended 8 under, rather than a poll 5 days prior that has him down 10 and he ends at 8.

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

Good point, Peter. Maybe that’s why Singer featured it.

Still, the reports coming out of Pennsylvania indicate huge support for Hillary Clinton. See the McAuliffe letter I posted above. And the HillarHub links in the middle narrow column.

She has a great shot, imho, of a landslide victory in Pennsylvania. As someone said above, the economy is what matters most to people in that state.

I agree with you completely that it will be a large win. I’m still waiting for the MI and FL re-votes to go with the ‘big state, dem state’ of Clinton’s campaign. I happen to agree with it. The Obama campaign with the trends of red-state wins and slipping support in critical democratic demographics and slipping Clinton support for Obama is a concern.

      • grannyhelen

Also look at the map – it’s sandwiched between New Jersey and Ohio, states Hil did very well in. It shares a large northern border w NY which is her home state.

  • Iphie

Susan, this comment is O/T and I do apologize for that, but I wanted to bring something to your attention that you might not have already seen. Apparently, yet another Obama advisor has resigned because of highly inappropriate statements made about Clinton. When I say highly inappropriate, I mean the worst kind of winger smears. Ben Smith covered it over on Politico, but other than that I haven’t really seen it covered anywhere, which surprised me.

Anyway, go take a look, and again, sorry about the O/T part.

OT (somewhat) My sane half calls to tell me a Republican Congressman is on the floor argueing for the retro active imunity and quoting from the National Review 3/7; that a Mr Brenner said they should vote for it…I Thought Obama made that go away? Why are the rethugs using it now?

Great job SusanUnPc; salute! (It a “peeling potatos” day!)

  • mel

Is Pa a closed or open primary?

    • http://noquarterusa.net/ SusanUnPC

      Closed. Praise be …

      • Caronos

*shrugs* With the Repub nomination settled though, every primary is open, as Republicans can now reregister as Dems to vote in ours. I heard somewhere that the numbers are indicating that’s what’s happenig in PA now.

  • mel

ah well at least those fooling around republicans won’t be around for it and independants!

    Is \nc closed also?

    • barbh

I am going to have to check into that. I read on a web site that it was closed. But in this Sundays news paper, it said that independents could vote for either party, but I don’t believe a republican can vote for a dem. I guess that would make it semi-open?

  • The Gringo’s Wife

I’m hoping that the numbers are reflecting a distinct loss in Obama’s momentum.

If Obama was going to catch fire, he would have done so by now and Hillary would be out. I always thought that she had room to grow and he peaked on day one.

  • ces

The thing the Obama people need to realize, it’s NOT about delegates.

    It’s about the electoral college.

So what if BO wins the ‘Fargo’ vote, it won’t carry enough electoral college delegates in November. Unless someone has done the math and can prove me wrong.

  • Sam

While these numbers make me happy, I expect these numbers to tighten to within 5 points about 1-2 weeks before the primary. He does better when people really start to think about the primary. Though things might be a big different in PA because I think in TX and OH polls tightened so much based on his big wins through February. In PA, I don’t think his WY or MS winns will get him too much support. Also, I don’t watch his rallies, but I hear he has been sounding flat and angry and is not planning to do HUUUUGGEEE magical rallies, but plans on sticking to smaller, more serious events. Any thoughts?

  • Nancy

I was able to attend last night’s Hillary rally in Scranton, Pa and yeah, there sure were thousands of screaming supporters. I was one. We were surrounded by college kids in line; in fact, there were lots and LOTS of college kids in line. Chatting in line was inevitable, what with the hours long wait in the freezing cold.

Those kids told me that the biggest thing that gets to them is when they hear how young voters are all for Obama. Not true, they claim. Not in Scranton, anyway. Another thing I heard was that in conversations, Obama youth voters have no idea why they are voting for him… he’s more the ‘flavor of the week’ than anything. these kids knew their stuff. Some of them will be involved in getting students registered to vote on campus. Real go getters. They commented on how uninformed Obama supporters are.

During the course of the evening I spoke to quite a few people, young and old… I found them all well informed. Funny, the older women tended to see Hillary as something as a rock star. One woman wondered aloud what color outfit Hillary would be wearing. :)

The line to get in really was really 1/2 mile long! People in the NE corner of the state don’t just support her, they LOVE their Hillary. She still has relatives around the area. No doubt in my mind… Hillary will take this area easily.

I posted my first diary today on this subject over at MyDD. It got an unbelievable reception. I’m blown away by their welcome. I’ve been busy all day with it. I’ve also been introduced to their pet trolls over there. Sorry this is so long.

    • Caronos

It’s not just Obama’s ‘young’ supporters who don’t know why they’re supporting him, that’s true of many older people too.

I had the same experience of seeing tons of young voters at a Hillary rally, to the extent that older women were shocked because they believed the media spin

      • Nancy

Today on local TV they were the University of Scranton where there was a drive to get people registered to vote. Don’t you know, one of those go getter college kids I met on Monday was right there on screen in the center of things. It really gave me a giggle.

  • Mr.Murder

They always cite polls giving Clinton a lead, to drive the narrative for motivating donations against her for her rival.

Then they use other polls as the race nears.

Polls that go 50-50 rep/dem, when nationally Dems have a lead by a third of party affiliated voters, is one way to shape the expectations.

Expect no different in the coming weeks.

They cannot deny the voting Demographic at work in the Ohio valley as it plays our through west Pennsylvania.

    Ah…Mr. Murder..
