five myths about obama

One of our readers, trying to get over it, posted a link to this story: The 5 biggest myths about Obama from Alex Conant at Politico.

I’ve concluded that much of the conventional wisdom about Obama is wrong. Here are five of the biggest misconceptions:

1. Obama is bold. Actually, he is overly cautious. It’s no coincidence the first bills he signed into law were the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, two populist favorites. Signing these bills was not an act of courage any more than attacking lobbyists or selecting Joe Biden as a running mate. In fact, Obama’s entire agenda is cautious (sometimes to a fault, in the case of his housing and banking bailouts). Are the numbers in his proposed budget eye-popping? Yes. But eye-popping budgets are well within the Democratic mainstream now.

2. Obama is a great communicator. Cut away the soaring rhetoric in his speeches, and the resulting policy statements are often vague, lawyerly and confusing. He is not plain-spoken: He parses his language so much that a casual listener will miss important caveats. That’s in part why he uses teleprompters for routine policy statements: He chooses his words carefully, relying heavily on ill-defined terms like “deficit reduction” (which means tax increases, rather than actual “savings”) and “combat troops” (as opposed to “all troops in harm’s way”).

3. Obamaland is a team of rivals. Obama earned the label “No-Drama Obama” for a reason. His closest advisers — those who actually shape his thinking, strategy and policies — are loyal and, by all accounts, like-minded. Obviously, they regularly disagree with each other, as any group of smart individuals does. But reading the (many) profiles of Obama aides written since the election, it’s striking that there are no anecdotes of serious disputes inside Obamaland. Obama does try to bring political foes into the fold when it’s convenient, but his team is primarily made up of political friends.

4. Obama is smooth. Despite being deliberate, Obama is surprisingly gaffe-prone. Reporters on my e-mail lists last year know he consistently mispronounced, misnamed or altogether forgot where he was. (In one typical gaffe in Sioux Falls, S.D., he started his speech with an enthusiastic “Thank you, Sioux City!”) His geographic gaffes are not just at routine rallies but at major events, including the Democratic National Convention and his first address to Congress. Any politician occasionally misspeaks, but the frequency of Obama’s flubs is notable.

5. Obama has a good relationship with the media. Working with the hundreds of reporters who covered the Obama campaign last year, I was struck by how many of them would quietly complain about Obama’s borderline disdain for the press. Sometimes it is readily visible — like when he scolded a reporter for asking a question during a presidential visit to the White House briefing room. Other times it’s more passive, like long gaps between press conferences, or it’s reflected in his staff’s attitude.

My first thought after reading was, “d’uh!” I think most of us here have been saying the same things for over a year now… haha

But, it was interesting to read, none the less. Especially coming from someone who considers himself an Obama aficionado.

Thanks, trying to get over it!

I think that another myth is “Obama is intelligent”. He is INCREDIBLY cautious when saying anything without a teleprompter, and just doesn’t seem very sharp or quick-witted. His lawyerly mumbling and parsing isn’t an indication of intellect, as it is self-preservation technique. Also, it drives me nuts whenever I hear one of his MSM apologist bootlickers call him a Harvard professor (a total lie). And still no college transcripts

  • DAB

Obama also lacks a sense of humor and his so-called jokes are often embarrassments such as the Nancy Reagan seance remark.

The smoothness myth was also debunked when he and Michelle so clearly reveal their ham handedness when confronting the simplest protocol issues such as gifts for Gordon Brown or serving their guests enough food.

Regarding the Press, while pundits who viewed BO from afar were often mesmerized, I agree that those who were his roadies were much less impressed. Even Andrea Mitchell, who seemed to have drunk the Kool-Aid at times complained about how they were treated.

I believe that these acts reveal a lack of respect and sensitivity to others and brings their arrogant, self-absorbed attitude into even clearer focus.

  • Mark

Never thought OBAMA would be worse than Peanut Carter.

This guy is an absolute fuc—- disaster!

    No leadership.

    Spending like a drunk sailor.

Does not give a shit about 50 million American’s who own stock in their 401k’s because HE DOES NOT OWN ANY!

  • Ginger

How he is a lawyer is beyond me. Lawyers have to be able to speak off-the-cuff. That is why I question that he graduated Magna Cum Laude.

  • Sassy

Here is my take in one lengthy sentence:

BO is a long-winded weakling, surrounded by hapless yes-men, who is off to the rockiest start of any President in memory, and getting a pass from the media, who promoted him endlessly, and are now facing the prospects of being hoisted on the racism scaffold!

  • pm317

How about he is incredibly cautious because he is hiding something (like his incompetence) and fears it unraveling when he least expects it.

  • alibe

The biggest myth is his intelligence. I am shocked by his mediocrity. He speaks in banal cliche’s, of which he bungles frequently. Having spent some of his formative years abroad, he misunderstands many common concepts. His mother had to wake him up at 4am to tutor him. A brilliant child would have gotten things quickly, no need for tutoring. He never did learn the Indonesian language, despite having lived there as a child for 5 years. I think he keeps his transcripts all secret because he was mediocre at best and he was given the benefit of the doubt because he was black and a guy. People just want to believe in him. I think he had a ghost writer for his first and second book. Probably Bill Ayers for the first and who knows for the second. I have never heard him say anything off the cuff that even comes close to brilliant. He is not stupid, but he ain’t the sharpest knife in the drawer… unlike Hillary and Bill, who always impress me with their brilliance and understanding.
Obama never became a real practicing lawyer because he allergic to work and not particularly bright. He wants people to be impressed by him, but he won’t or can’t put in the effort to do the homework or the time necessary to become well versed on the subject matter. He uses his race to deflect criticism and avoid the hard truths.

  • jwrjr

The MSM supports him now because they may be beginning to realize that if they told the truth about BHO now their fawning over him during the campaign would make them look like total putzes.

  • tarma

American Girl, I had the same response that you did: “yeah, well…duh…”

It’s that learning curve thing; these great epiphanies are compilations of the “a-ha!” moments that many of us have been having since day one of Obama’s presidential campaign.

    AGinI,

I read this yesterday in a hurry out the door. Thanks for moving it up again. Today we had two interesting pieces in the Denver Post. One was a news article about the reaction to Rachael MadCow’s dissing of what she called “conservadems,” two of whom are our Senators from Colorado–Udall and Bennet. The article did raise the question of whether her rants would affect the popularity of these two in Colorado, which only just this year turned blue. There are many, many conservatives in both parties here when it comes to finances.

The other was this piece about the One’s logical fallacies:

  • tek

Yes, I wish people would stop calling vagueness “lawyerliness.” My husband is a lawyer and the law is all about preciseness and detail. People might not like the letter of the law, but it isn’t vague.

  • Mercedes

A few days ago, NQ showed the CNN interview of Chas Freeman after the withdrawal of his nomination from the administration Intelligence position. I thought his comments were interesting, but disturbing, because Mr Freeman, who is clearly an intelligent man, said he thought Obama was intelligent and articulate. I thought, what a weird thing to say because I myself would not make that assessment based on any output I’ve ever seen from Obama. But Freeman also said Obama is a “strategic thinker”. What does that mean? It could mean whatever long-term goals Obama REALLY has are consistent with Mr Freeman’s and maybe not with the militant Israelis. It also means that Obama is a manipulator. That aspect of his character is VERY clear. I have never equated that trait with intelligence. I consider manipulative skills an attribute of a low-life, like a snake in the grass. You never know when they are going to jump up and bite you.

    I don’t know (sigh)…what’s worse…an abusive thug or a conniving, lying schemer.

  • tek

alibe: Have you noticed how he clips his sentences? He has a studied, affected cadence to his speech that sounds snobbish.

  • BARB

I still have not been able to find out when and where he passed his bar exam. The info is available for Michelle and Hillary Clinton…who both passed the bar after the second try. From Andy Martin’s newsletter:

During the campaign Obama falsely portrayed himself as a “law professor” (his title was actually “lecturer”) and boasted fraudulently about “litigating civil rights cases,” all of which was a pathetic distortion. Obama was at best attorneys’ arm candy, an African-American ornament that was used by real lawyers to make their case in court. Obama never tried a lawsuit in any court and, so far a I am aware, never even served as “second chair” trial counsel either. (Hint: all of this is in my book.) Obama’s legal career reflects great intelligence but a total absence of professional accomplishment.

  • Pacific John

    6. Obama has high ethical standards. His less than virtuous campaigns aside, he has gone back on his word and hired lobbyists, and tried to hire a seemingly endless list of nominees with tax problems, like Treasury Secretary Geithner.

Obama Taps Into Support, Launches New Online Tool

    http://www.politicsonline.com/blog/archives/2009/03/from_campaign_t.php

Obama launched a grassroots campaign and new online tool to build support for his $3.55 trillion dollar budget proposal.

The grass-roots campaign is being run by the Democratic National Committe and is using the 13 million-strong email list accumulated during Obama’s presidential campaign to flood members of Congress with phone calls asking for their support for the $3.55 trillion budget proposal.

David Plouffe, Obama’s campaign manager and now advisor to Organizing for America (OFA), the group in charge of the 13 million email list, sent out a call-to-action email to the mailing list, saying that they will be asking supporters to perform similar tasks that were asked during the campaign: to organize neighborhood canvassing operations this weekend and to participate in organized efforts, using the same voter lists that were used during the presidential campaign, to go door-to-door seeking support for hte Obama agenda.

While the President’s office is using the same old online campaign tools to engage supporters and build a movement of support for his budget agenda, the DNC and OFA has launched an online tool that allows constituents to enter their address to locate their congressional representatives’ contact information so they can call the lawmakers’ offices to voice approval of the proposal. The new online tool launched today marks the first time the OFA e-mail database has been used to urge direct contact with Congress in support of legislation.

Obama introduced Organizing for America via YouTube in January, saying that the group “will build on the movement you started during the campaign. That’s why I am asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities.”

The typical tidal wave of support familiar with President Obama’s grass-roots efforts of the past has not been seen yet. ( See techPresident’s TubeMogel Chart: Testing Support for Obama)

I agree with everything you say Alibe. I think people are impressed with the “idea” of Obama and his history and have been rewarding it and/or reading their own wants and hopes into him since he was probably a teenager.

I think of him as a shapeshifter – able to be what others project onto him or what he feels they need. I think it is a coping mechanism learned as a small child as a result of his parents abandonment and it has been honed very well over the years. Therefore his reluctance to really be pinned down on anything or to make a command decision.

I think Obama desperately needs his close group of lackeys and hatchetmen, speechwriters, his wife and his teleprompter. Without them, I think he’s stunningly average and he knows it.

  • tarma

I think of him as a shapeshifter – able to be what others project onto him or what he feels they need.

Another word for this is psychopath.

    1. Obama is bold.

He’s black! That means he’s bold! Did I say he’s black? That means we’re bold and absolved of our racism now.

  • tango

LOL, this is funny and goes with #2 – Obama the great Communicator. His teleprompter has it’s own blog.

  • candymarl

In other words, The Obama Youth Corps. Kinda like that other guy’s youth corps.

    Now what was his name?

  • termo

I have to question his graduating Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School having not even graduated Columbia University Cum Laude.

It should also be noted that he got admitted to Harvard Law through the back door via Percy Sutton and not because of his grades or law boards.

In fact, while he graduated Columbia it was because of a transfer program they had with Occidental College where Obama did begin college for 2 years.

  • Elizabeth

I have no doubt Obama is paralyzed on a very deep level with the realization that he isn’t good enough for his role and that if he lets his guard down he will do something inappropriate.

In normal situations, of course, a leader with overly rigid expectations who appears rigid and distant or conveys a lack of self-esteem affects how others perceive your ability to do the job. When public attitudes do finally catch up with reality of this president, the burden of pretense will be lifted. Whether that means ever being confident and totally at ease with his own style and abilities to improve on a substantive performance level is another question.

  • avwrobel

Yeah, you’re right tek. I meant to say he uses a general ‘weaseliness’ in his prose where he’s always trying to leave an escape hatch away from whatever it is he’s trying to make it appear he’s saying. And the MSM rarely calls him on it. One glaring example is when, during the campaign, he said “The Constitution is an imperfect document”. No one has ever asked him what he regards as imperfections in the document he’s now sworn to uphold.

  • TexasBuckeye

50% of the entire Harvard law class graduates “cum laude.”

Since Oblahblah is said to have graduated “magna cum laude,” we can establish that he was in at least the top 50% of his class.

Now “Magna cum laude” status is determined after subtracting the number of students who graduated “summa cum laude.” So Oblahblah graduated in the top 10% of those who didn’t graduate “summa cum laude.”

Theoretically, he could have had a C average. But we’ll never know because he won’t release his records.

  • skinny malinky

Two important paragraphs from the bottom of that article:

Obama has a lot of qualities that are indeed admirable: He is without a doubt smart and disciplined, and his mastery of politics is unmatched. But despite popular perceptions, he is far from perfect.

Alex Conant is a communications consultant who served as the Republican National Committee’s national press secretary during the 2008 presidential campaign. Previously, he was a spokesman at the White House and in the U.S. Senate.

Gosh, the RNC’s press secretary has unflattering things to say about Obama? Inconceivable!

  • Lyn

Don’t forget his Dad went to Harvard, so he was a Legacy, like GWB

  • Lyn

He said himself, he is a blank slate that other project what they want onto.

  • tarma

In my opinion, not nearly important as AG’s observation:

d’uh!” I think most of us here have been saying the same things for over a year now… haha

  • Lyn

I think these emails they sent are why all of a sudden some of the old Bots are back, since one of the emails said In the next few weeks we’ll be asking you to do some of the same things we asked of you during the campaign — talking directly to people in your communities about the President’s ideas for long-term prosperity. But first, start with your own pledge of support, and the support of your friends, family, and neighbors:

    my.barackobama.com/pledgeproject
We know this fight won’t be easy. But important battles never are. Together, we have the opportunity to shape our country’s future. We believed in the power of people to win an improbable election victory. And we believe in the power of people to drown out the cynics

Then of course they pretend they have nothing to do with Obama
“Paid for by Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee — 430 South Capitol Street SE, Washington, D.C. 20003. This communication is not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee”

BUT all the links go to Mybarrack..

That’s right, almost forgot! Only bots have legitimate opinions and observations. The rest of us our only racist, facist, cave-dwellers who need to sit down and shut up while the messiah works his magic.

  • skinny malinky

All I’m saying is that you need to consider the source. And also that when this guy says he’s an Obama aficianado, he probably doesn’t mean that in the traditional “I’m a fan” meaning of the word.

  • Andy

Thanks AIG, indeed it’s “d’uh” for us and a bit too late for Conant. It is nice to read it nontheless — although in #2 I would have mentioned the teleprompters and in #4 BO’s gaffe about having visited all “57 states and have 2 more to go”).

The real test however will be how loud and frequent is PBO’s call on these and the more serious ones in the lead up to his re-election bid. Let’s see if in 2012 they
call him on any of this or elevate him again to messianic stature and despite the health of the economy at that time….

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

so because he worked as a press sec for the RNC, he can’t like Obama? I thought Obama crossed all party lines, and inspired people from all parties and affiliations? I thought Obama said Republicans supported him, and voted for him?

  • Andy

Oops … I did it again!! Sorry American Girl in Italy… It should have been AGI not AIG (LOL)

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

    WHERE’S MY BONUS!?

  • skinny malinky

I said he’s probably not using the word afficiado to mean that he’s a fan. I didn’t say he can’t like Obama. Based on his column that debunks 5 “myths” about ways that Obama is good, I get the idea he’s not a fan. Call me crazy…

  • skinny malinky

And someday I’ll spell aficionado correctly. Probably not today, though.

  • ziggy

If you speak in front of cameras for a few hundred hours, errors and gaffs are inevitable. I suspect we’ll be waiting a while for the Obama equivalent of the 365-page calendar of daily “Bushism” to hit the market, however. Please be patient. It may take a second term to get enough material.

  • barb

When I got my grad degree the university did not offer honors for graduate work. I did get a Summa in undergrad. I wonder if it was just my university or all universities that do not offer honors after undergrad. Do you even get honors in law school? Does anyone know?

  • devildog666

I think Obama could be classified as a “talking head”; and not that great of one.

  • barb

I knew this as soon as he dicked over McCain with the campaign financing of the general election. Obama truly has no ethical standards. But then look at his spiritual guidance and what could one expect.

  • Andy

Just 1 Million seemed to little for me; so kept yours as well ;-)

  • PaulRevere

I beleive him to be incredibly insecure, hence the need for constant adulation and positive feedback. His wife is exactly the same way. They are over their heads professionally and socioeconomically. Sadly, they are painfully aware of their shortcomings and make up fot it by *trying* to act the part which they do poorly and distastefully and without any care to their REAL charges, the American People.

I despise both of them tremendously.

  • ACPD

Bo is just GW dipped in chocolate….That’s why things are getting better and NOTHING has changed except now we have an inept First Lady, as well as a clown for a president…. I never thought I would say that I miss Laura Bush, but I do. Some progress!

  • ACPD

I meant, of course, “…are NOT getting better….”

  • termo

“These honors are almost always awarded to undergraduates earning their bachelor’s, and, with the exception of law school graduates, much more rarely to graduate students taking their master’s or doctorate degree. The honor is typically indicated on the diploma. Latin honors are often conferred upon law school graduates receiving a Juris Doctor or J.D., where they are generally based upon class rank or grade point average.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_honors

Let’s see his law school diploma.

  • heather

I read about this yesterday and was completely chilled at the idea. The OFA people are expected to sign a pledge of support for Obama and his “bold plan”, then they’re to go out and get others to sign the pledge.

Maybe my tinfoil hat is too tight, but the thought of some pencil necked, patchouli scented Obot showing up at my door trying to elicit a signature of support scares the poop out of me. It shouldn’t, but it does. What if I don’t want to sign? Do I go on another list? Like a wierd ones to watch list or something? The whole thing smells bad to me and seems like intimidation. Am I nuts?

  • Palm Tree

Bush’s brain was Karl Rove behind the scenes.

Obama’s brain is a teleprompter just out of view.

Maybe the biggest myth about Obama is his supposed “integrity.” Anyone who watched the vile smear campaign he ran on Hillary knows better.

  • humanrace

    right on!
This guy is not who he says he is.
So disappointing that the us beleived they needed to feel better, elect obama, without knowledge of his actual record. Black white, green or purple
we can’t fix our mistakes by offering up a token person to fix the past mistakes.

  • Ferd Berfle

When you’re done learning to spell, simpleton, try learning a bit about competence and honesty, two things that your Messiah is bereft of.

  • Ellen

His mother woke him at 4 AM to tutor him in English as he was going to an Indonesian school which started early in the morning. I think this shows how contientious and education minded his mother was -not that she had a slow learning child. YOU think he had a ghost writer?? and who are YOU to make such assumptions? Bill Ayers? you are really talking crap here. No college or university will ever release transcripts unless its to the student himself/herself or by subpoena. not even parents can get their child’s transcripts unless the child has written permission to do so. Why don’t you do a little research here instead of spouting your opinion as fact because you are just plain WRONG.

  • Ellen

Tell us how you really think! Over their heads socioeconomically? Exactly what do you mean by that Paul Revere?
Again, you take an article written by a right wing former RNC lackey? Hardly an Obama aficionado-Politico is going to the right more every day – what a shame.

  • Ellen

That’s right AGII – he probably doesn’t like Obama too much – as you would say, duh!!
There are many Republicans who supported him, but certainly not the former press sec for the RNC.
Why do you always read right-wing or Republican written articles to quote in your blog?

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

    why not?

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

and, btw, the former press sec. for President Bush supports Obama.

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

obama was born in hawaii, but needed tutoring in english, that started at 4am?

I would call that a slow learner.

Many people think Obama had a ghost writer. Who are you to know that he didn’t? Most *celebs* do.

  • Ellen

I lived abroad for several years when my kids were very young – they went to local schools and were immersed in the local language. I had a tutor for them to make sure they kept up with reading and writing English so they wouldn’t lose those skills (even though they were fluent in conversation). Kids pick up and lose languages very quickly – unlike adults.
Were my kids slow learners? Not necessarily – maybe not brilliant, but both went to ivy league schools and have become professionals, one a medical doctor and one a lawyer. So I don’t think his tutoring was necessarily because he was a slow learner.

And please provide names of the many people who think Obama had a ghost writer – ‘thinking’ does not equate to it being true. I only have his books that I have read and that do not claim to have been ghostwritten – nor have I heard of any ghostwriter state he/she wrote the book-those are facts or (as I am sure you would prefer), lies. take your pick.

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

If I’m not mistaken, Obama attended an english speaking school.

LIke I said, lots of people *think* his book was ghost written.

    http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/10/who_wrote_dreams_from_my_fathe_1.html

    http://www.cashill.com/natl_general/did_bill_ayers_write_1.htm

    http://www.brutallyhonest.org/brutally_honest/2008/10/bill-ayers-ghos.html

Even Chris Matthews thinks his second book had a ghost writer.

  • Ellen

Why not is right-you are free to use any articles or talking points to quote in your blog, but by using predominantly right-wing ones, your readers have the right to question the source and usual biases contained within. It sort of dilutes your point, in my opinion.

I said many Republicans supported obama in my comment – but Scott McClellan is, you must admit, a rather unique case – a former press secretary doing a 180! must have had good reason.

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

unusual bias…? you mean, which is different from the completely non bias media on the left? hahahahhahaha

Perhaps the news sources I use aren’t the bias ones. Maybe the ones YOU read are? ever thought of that?

get out of the liberal media bubble, and you will discover a whole new world.

So, the PS from the WH can switch, but not the PS from the RNC? whatever.

  • Ellen

Your examples all consist of ONE person (Cashill) trying to make the case that Ayers wrote Obama’s ‘Dreams From My Father’ – and his case is pretty flimsy at that. Cashill uses Ayers’ ‘Fugitive Days’ as being similar to Obama’s ‘Dreams’ – and thus his case for Ayers having helped with or ghostwritten Obama’s ‘Dreams’ – yet Obama wrote his book in 1995, Ayers wrote his in 2001. So who ghostwrote who or what??

And now you are taking the opinion of Chris Matthews, the evil mysoginyst Hillary-hater who you villified continually as a qualified reference? That’s a little weird…

  • Ellen

I think you are mistaken. He attended a public Indonesian elementary school and a Catholic school – there is no reason to think those schools would be teaching in the English language – only in English language courses/classes.

  • Ellen

Oh for crying out loud, why are you responding with an attack?? If I quote a liberal or left leaning columnist of course there will be a bias – we all have biases depending on our beliefs. The right wing news sources have their biases as do the left, that is a given. That’s why you have to take any given bent for what its worth and consider the source.
Unlike you, I do NOT frequent the pro-Obama blogs at all – because I prefer to hear what the other side is saying. I like a disagreement and have no interest in reading what I already favor – sort of like preaching to the choir, you know?

And who is saying the PS from the WH CAN switch but not the PS from the RNC? I never said that – i said McClellan was a unique case of a press secretary completely turning on his party/president and supporting the opposition. that doesn’t happen very often. just pointing that out, NOT giving my opinion as fact.

  • TeakwoodKite

    “smart and disciplined” WTF???

    NUTS!

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

an attack? seriously, take a chill pill! what attack!?! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO ATTACKS ME.

Unlike me? I frequent pro-obama blogs?

“And who is saying the PS from the WH CAN switch but not the PS from the RNC? I never said that”
“There are many Republicans who supported him, but certainly not the former press sec for the RNC.”

    Uh…. you kinda did.

  • http://americanpumainitaly.blogspot.com/ American Girl in Italy

matthews, lover and defender of all things Barack, thinks Obama had a ghost writer. Just saying…

I know the articles were about cashill, but all those other bloggers also believe it. I said LOTS of people think he had a ghost writer. I offered proof, and people.
