Government interference is the primary cause…

The primary cause was that central components of the free market system were hijacked by amoral people, who set up complex mechanisms that allowed it to be methodically looted from the inside out. They made off with billions, leaving behind broken companies, bankrupted investors, and an economy so flooded with worthless paper that it nearly ceased to function. The problem didn’t arrise because there was too much government meddling. It happened because there wasn’t enough. It’s the result of decades of deregulation; of thinking that the foxes can be trusted to manage the hen house.

I agree that the proper function of the government is to referee. That referee must have real authority, be constantly present on the court, and be totally committed to the integrity and principles of the game. I personally favor a large cadre of highly trained, non-partisan civil servants to perform that function. That could be reasonably interpreted as a statement that we need more government, but the fact that I believe that has nothing to do with socialism.

“In a dramatic reversal Wednesday, Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., confessed to adding language to a spending cap in the stimulus bill last month that specifically excluded executive bonuses included in contracts signed before the bill’s passage.

“As many know, the administration was, among others, not happy with the language. They wanted some modifications to it,” he said. “They came to us, our staff, and asked for changes, and the changes at the time did not seem that obnoxious or onerous.”

So Dodd lied yesterday when he said he knew nothing of the language in the bill and now says the administration and treasury forced him to include the provision allowing the bonuses for AIG. Therefore, all of Obama’s histrionics and outrage is a lie or Geithner is operating on his own with no consultation with Obama. All the Democrats posturing in the hearings today and trying to lay responsibility on the CEO of AIG, a man who agreed to work for $1/yr, was a distraction. silliness, politics as usual.

Name one country where hardcore socialism or communism has produced the utopian world that you seem to want ziggy. And if you think there is such a place, why don’t you go there?

And didn’t he remind you of Bush after 9/11 scaring the Congress into voting for his “Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002″ when no one had time to read all the intelligence? Your Bambi said we don’t want a “crisis to turn into a catastrophe” and scared congress into voting for the 1,000 pg bailout that no one had time to read. He’s smarter but he really is Bush3.

Look, I’ve been a Democrat my whole life. The Republicans didn’t deserve to stay in power after these last 8 years. But Obama? What a disaster. Does the guy ever work? He only knows how to campaign and read his teleprompter.

Are there good Dem ideas in his budget? Yes. But this is not the time to try to implement them.

You say you have a good job–do you like his idea to tax your health benefits? How about his idea to get rid of your mortgage deduction? I live in the Bay Area, too and believe me–his ideas will affect upper middle class people on the coasts–not just the so-called wealthy.

“These bonuses, outrageous as they are, are a symptom of a much larger problem,” he said. It’s “a culture where people made enormous sums of money taking irresponsible risks that have now put the entire economy at risk.”

What part of that succinct little summary of what’s gone wrong with free markets and American capitalism don’t you get?
