Christmas Day 2007: Obama in Chicago

According to one news report, Obama enjoyed the Christmas holidays in Chicago last year.  I quote:

Sunday, December 23rd 2007, 4:00 AM
PLEASANTVILLE, Iowa – A day before he will fly back to Chicago to spend Christmas with his family, a voter asked Barack Obama to explain his “Muslim background” – an Internet-fed fallacy that continues to dog his campaign.

Jeremiah Wright fulminated against Hillary Clinton while preaching from his pulpit at Trinity United Church of Christ on Christmas Day 2007.

Obama explains how he is a member of Trinity United Church of Chirst to an Iowa voter the day before he departed for Chicago for the Christmas holiday.  Was he present during this Christmas Day sermon?  Did he speak with his minister and spiritual advisor before the sermon was delivered on Christmas Day?  Was he aware of the content of Wright’s sermon?  And if so, when was he alerted to the inappropriate content of Wright’s sermon: Christmas Day, the day following Christmas Day, the week following Christmas Day?  Or were Barack, Michelle, Malia and Sasha standing and not “sitting” in the pews of TUCC when Wright uttered controversial comments critical of Hillary Clinton’s whiteness on Christmas Day?

I await Obama’s answers to my apposite questions.

The Obama’s are look like some idiot producer’s vision of the Kennedys, if they were African Americans.

Apparently, people are not to ask questions about the product.

    Pelosi doesn’t.

    Is that the dick?

Why the dick has been photo shopped, I do not know, but wherever rotten meat is to be found, Cheney finds a way…

  • simon

    are, look like,

    sorry…

  • anna shane

I’d be more inclined to accept his explanations if he’d been forthcoming earlier, if he weren’t claiming he didn’t know, and if he hadn’t been using every possible opportunity (damn few there have been) to claim Hillary’s been behind remarks that attribute his negatives to his race. She would gain nothing by that and there is no reason to think she’s got a race issue, clearly that’s belongs more to his supporters than to hers. But she does point out differences in qualifications and experience, and in the depth and detail of their plans, and between her Iraq exit plan and his, her universal health care plan and his, issue things. He’s disingenuous in suggesting these issue based differences she campaigns on are really meant to ‘smear’ him, she’d be running on her own positives and her own plans and her own professional and experienced advisors, on her own record, whomever she were running against. obama is running on his so-called superior judgement and I think he’s used poor judgement in acting like the victim of racism.

A stunning scrap of information. Can we (dare we) assume that the Obama family would skip church on Christmas Day so as not to be associated with the hate speech he had never heard “repeated” by his minister?

Obama’s words Friday: With Rev. Wright’s retirement and the ascension of my new pastor, Rev. Otis Moss, III, Michelle and I look forward to continuing a relationship with a church that has done so much good. And while Rev. Wright’s statements have pained and angered me, I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States.

Are we now allowed to judge Obama?
Does this guy not get it?
Your values come from your beliefs and your beliefs were guided by Rev Wright for 20 yrs!
Your judgement appears to continually be on speech to an anti-war rally and a whole lot of “I do not recall statements”!
Your Experience, well that we are still trying to find, whast we have learned is pressing the wrong button 5 times when voting, saying one thing and meaning another, leaving an empty chair on a committe you Chair, voting present when election time is around the corner, Praising Bush’s handling of the Iraq War, so far, experience is something sorely lacking here Obama!

    THIS IS NOT ENOUGH…

ARENT THERE ANY CAMERAS IN THE STREET OR GROCERY STORE OR SOMETHING IN THE AREA, EVEN A TRAFFIC CAMERA, THAT WOULD SHOW HIS ENTOURAGE PASSING BY?

AND WHAT ABOUT LOCAL HYWAY PATROL OR SHERRIFFS OFFICE DOING TRAFFIC CONTROL, OR ESCOURT?

WHAT ABOUT LOCAL COMMUNITY PAPERS, OR EVEN CHARITIES BEING RECOGNIZED ON CHRISTMAS AT THE CHURCH?

LARRY KNOW ANYBODY, WHO KNOWS ANYBODY, WHO MAY BE ON HIS SECRET SERVICE DETAIL?

    JUST SAYING…

“…the Romans were rich, the Romans were Italians, which means they were Europeans, which means they were white… and the Romans ran everything in the Jesus’s country…”

I wonder if this kind of reasoning has played a role in Obama’s decision to keep Europe out of his cosmopolitan itinerary.

Moreover, I cannot help but wonder whether this kind of logic had any influence on Obama’s decision to do absolutely nothing and have no policy hearings as a Chair Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on European Affairs?

  • simon

America survives and thrives because of tolerance, we are not a homogeneous nation, we are the better for it, tolerance being one of our greatest virtues.

Wright, like some of the christian evangelicals, or even Karl Rove, advocates hate against those who are different.

Conquer and divide is not a game, it has lasting effects on our ability to function as a nation, remember all that red sate blue state bullshit, and the idea of a “civil war?”

Some took it very very seriously, in that they were trying to ignite culture wars, to further denigrate America, ie “the republican southern strategy.”

It matters, this is again, WHY Obama should not be
    president.

The means justify the end, that’s some pretty shortsighted thinking, esp when the justice department, and the IRS are still functioning…

  • simon

Moreover, I cannot help but wonder whether this kind of logic had any influence on Obama’s decision to do absolutely nothing and have no policy hearings as a Chair Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on European Affairs?

Obama may try to ignore Europe, Europe doesn’t ignore Obama.

Like Cheney, and China, and the Russians.

Just because you want it so, doesn’t mean it is, just shows incredibly poor intellect and judgement, on your part…

  • BluestBlue

I think that was an official event, swearing in as a Senator, where cheney was present… not photoshop’d.

  • Gloria

Hey, Hillary is a woman…she knows what taking crap is like…and she’s facing it again now.

Besides, didn’t the Rev. ever hear that “Woman is the Nigger of the World”??? Thank you, Yoko Ono, for that assessment. It’s true…and this guy is fully aware that blacks and women have always the fight for change in this country…

Is this where Michele’s obvious chip on her shoulder got to be so big??? And Mr. Hope with the smile…do you trust his motives after hearing this sort of thing??

  • izarradar

Where WAS Obama on Christmas 2007? That’s a fair question to ask. Come on, folks, that was what? Less than twelve weeks ago??? If he wasn’t in Rev. Wright’s church (the church he was married in, and his kids were baptised in) where the heck was he? The press must know. You can’t tell me that the candidates were left alone on Christmas? What about Obama’s Secret Service guys? This is a story that isn’t going to go away. Just keep asking questions.

  • Tom

Another newsreport he was in Chicago for Christmas:

OBAMA SPENT CHRISTMAS DAY 2007 IN CHICAGO. REV. WRIGHT GAVE A CHRISTMAS 2007 SERMON THAT HAS BEEN PLAYED ON TV.

The question is did Obama attend that sermon? He should have, right?

Here is from BET news that he spent Christmas day in Chicago with his family:

    Obama Speaks
    Posted December 27, 2007
By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer
Posted Dec. 27, 2007 –Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) spent Christmas Day in Chicago with his wife of 15 years, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Natasha.

  • John

I give it 48 hours before someone provides video evidence that Obama has sat, stood, whatever at one of Wright’s rantings…errr, sermons…and either said nothing afterwards or applauded.

Maybe just 24 hours. The tape is out there, you know it is– a US Senator and possible or current presidential candidate in church? Someone’s captured this.

  • OxyCon

Even though Obama was in Chicago for Christmas, he couldn’t go to Church because he stubbed his toe.

  • kmath

I rarely go to church on Christmas and Easter. I find that many people who are there, go only on those days.

But as to the pastors comments, I find them right on target. Hillary is the epitome of White privilege growing up in Park Ridge, IL. He also stated that she would not know what it is like to be oppressed and feel the power of racism. I don’t know how that is wrong. His angry statements about the song God Bless America, well he is product of Jim Crow, the 50′s, 60′s and the 80′s. Please don’t forget about how Crack came to the streets and the disparity in sentencing. Also remember that Bill Clinton locked up more black men than Reagan and Bush combined.

As for supporting Hillary, I would rather support the devil herself.

  • Mary

I find it hard to believe that 2 ivy league educated lawyers could sit week after week for twenty years and listen to this screaming hatefilled man. They are not living in a one church town, and I am sure that there are dozens of deeply spiritual AfroAmerican churches close by. Their choice speaks volumns about them. This choice was also “boneheaded”.

  • John

Then strongly encourage Senator Obama to embrace Rev. Wright and everything he stands for, instead of dumping him overboard. Don’t support Obama for being a New Kind of Politician but also support him turning his back on his spiritual mentor. Encourage him to repeat Wright’s words (Obama has no problem using the words of others as his own, anyway) and to defend them everywhere he goes.

  • Strawberrybitch

This is making me ill. How the hell can an Obama supporter even think this won’t be used against him in November? McCain won’t even need to worry about Iraq at this point. He’ll just run these sermons on a never ending loop along with Michelle Obama’s remark. We are sooooo dead in November.

  • simon

Hillary is the epitome of White privilege growing up in Park Ridge, IL

And there is no class structure based on wealth in Park Ridge, at Main East?

What a moronic thing to say, why do you treat it as a homogeneous environment?

See, you’re already uninformed, you’re not capable of making a rational decision.

    Obama is shithead.

Do ALL of his supporters have such simplistic thinking skills?

Explains everything, and thanks for the postcrads.

Really, BE CAREFUL where you troll.

    Shithead.

OBAMA ON THE COVER OF REVEREND WRIGHT’S TRUMPET MAGAZINE

    http://www.projo.com/religion/content/projo_20051119_rimag19.20cdf4f2.html#

“AS THE CHURCH GREW, its television ministry expanded into syndication, and the pastor became a more prominent figure. Wright began to see a vision for the magazine as a more sophisticated publication that would speak not just to black Christians but to the entire African-American community.

While echoing the pastor’s message of faith and social justice, Trumpet now also includes information on leaders and news events in the black community as well as lifestyle features on health, food, travel, fashion and relationships.

African-American personalities on the cover have included U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, hip-hop artist Common, gospel legend Mavis Staples and African artist Samuel Akainyah. Readers can find perspectives on Hurricane Katrina, a tribute to publishing giant John Johnson, a report on church activism and the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, and a feature on actor Larenz Tate and his efforts to raise funds for sickle cell anemia.

In September, the magazine officially separated from the church and became its own entity. Trumpet is available at African-American bookstores in Chicago and 13 other major cities with large black communities. Circulation is about 5,000, and Jeri Wright said the goal is to reach 100,000 in the next 10 months.

“It’s a lifestyle magazine for the socially conscious,” she said. “We’re speaking to all of the African-American community, those in the churches, in the mosques, the temples, and the unchurched.”

IN EACH ISSUE of Trumpet, readers find a column written by Rev. Wright, often a blistering commentary on social injustice. Wright often writes frankly about his opposition to the war in Iraq, his disgust with Wal-Mart’s treatment of workers and the widespread racism he sees throughout the nation.

Dwight Hopkins, theology professor at the University of Chicago’s Divinity School, said many black Christian leaders preach about black inequality and liberation theology. But with Trumpet’s leap into national distribution, Wright’s message has the potential to reach people outside of the sanctuary.

Note that TRUMPET magazine gave a life-time achievement award to Farakkhan.

  • Strawberrybitch

Uh Simon, I like you a lot your one of the reason’s I’m here but can we please stop using foul language when it comes to describing Obama. One of the reasons I left other blogs is because of the nasty things Hillary was called. We need to be better than KOS. PS Yeah I know, this coming from someone calling herself a bitch…the irony is not lost on me.

  • simon

Ivy league ain’t what it used to be, really.

Just like every other “elite” institution which has failed, so have the ivies…

I mean, where are all these people coming from, anyway, which schools?

  • simon

We are sooooo dead in November.

    Yes, we are.

Something even more scary, journalists reporting McCain is a hothead.

Clinton is without a doubt the most stable, balanced candidate, out of them all.

    Do you agree?

  • simon

I often found Chicago politics to be provincial, the boys not too bright, more braggart, than intellect, compared to other places, kind of like a giant polish sausage in the world of fine dining.

I’m finding the same of Obama’s campaign people.

  • Strawberrybitch

Yup I do agree but Hill’s got one problem…well two actually, a set of ovaries.

  • Strawberrybitch

    your=you’re…damn it.

Here is your typical Obamaton in action:

Obama’s pastor says “God Damn America”, to which the Obamaton says “Rev Falwell is really, really bad and America is bad too”.

Proof is found that Obama was in Chicago the day his pastor had a giant bigot eruption in Church on Christmas, to which the Obamaton says “I never go to Church on Christmas”.

Obama gets caught ripping the head off a little child and drinking his blood, to which the Obamaton says: “Obama was thirsty”.

*last sentence for dramatical purposes only.

  • simon

The bible, I thought it was his church, given the article.

    You’re right, sorry.

Excuse me, Kmath, when’s the last time you think Miss Michelle Obama spent a day down in the hood?

    Talk about “privileged.” Sheesh

  • simon

I understand the point you’re making, but there are times the curse word is necessary.

Especially when it appears the other is simply trolling.

Otherwise, I promise to watch my language.

It’s all technique, Strawberry, but I’m sure you’re aware, others troll simply to disrupt the blogs, it’s old school stuff…

  • simon

And McCains hot, reportedly unstable head?

    Testosterone?

    Bwha!

  • simon

    giant bigot eruption

    Like a giant troll eruption?

    THAT is funny, Oxy.

And btw I meant to comment on your post yesterday, mentioning gays, Wright and AIDS.

I see it, and I’m wondering if the gay community has felt any kind of backlash connected to this?

  • Myke

Yes, going to Harvard is not representative of Priveledge. A $1.67 million dollar mansion, just a poor black kid from Chicago.

Hillary, if you recall has been called a b*tch, c*nt, Wh*re, and every other word known to defame women for many more years and many more times than Barack has been called N*gger. I promise you this. And by tens of thousands of people simultaneously.

I would also like to point out that all of “White Americans” were not slave owners. Many of us whities didn’t even get here until the early part of the twentieth century. Did you ever hear of Ellis Island? My family arrived here in 1917 from Czechoslovakia. My mother’s family is Native American so there were no boats involved. They were already here. Czechoslovakis is not known for it’s huge slave trade. Many white people came here long after slavery and faced many hardships of our own

And while we are at it….

Most of the slaves were sold by rival tribes or their own chiefs for money to slave traders. So while all of us whities are slave owners and rich I invite you to look at the current balance of my checking account. I have never, ever been unemployed and I have zero in savings. No Harvard. No mansion.

Let’s not forget that this so called “devil” donated all her book royalties (several million dollars) to Children’s Hospitals. She didn’t buy a Georgian Mansion in a posh neignborhood with the help of a Syrian thug, slumlord.

While The Rev is busy slamming white people he brings up the fact that Barack was raised by a single parent. My recollection is that his white mother was abandoned by his black father and she was left with zero support. He has been called serial adulterer.

Barack went by Barry his entire life and never went to church…. until he needed to be black and Christian to run for office. Now all of the sudden twenty years ago he is BARACK. No longer Barry. He is a Christian in the largest community church and a funny thing happens. He gets elected.

Now let’s take a peek at Africa currently? Is all this genocide white people killing blacks? I know that if I were African American I would find it terribly difficult adjusting to life in Africa today. It would be like me moving to Czechoslovakia. I have absolutely no connection to the place my ancestors came from. I am an American.

I am not a white American. I am not priveledged. I am not in the business of driving past people and yelling racial slurs. At some point I have given up blaming other’s for what happened before any of us were alive.

They think that Barack should not be held accountable for what his Pastor says yet his Pastor wants to hold me accountable for slavery and white Priveledge. I am guilty of neither. So when he speaks in generalities about “white” people he is no different than The KKK or any other extreme racist.

Because something happened long ago does not give you permission to judge me by the actions of people I am not connected to.

He is very strongly connected to his Pastor. Judge him.

“Hillary never had a cab whiz by because of the color of her skin.”

You knows what, Reverend? I’m white and I’ve been so poor I couldn’t afford to hail a cab in the first place.

I’ve been so poor I lived in the projects, and then only because my father’s job with the housing authority got him a discount on the rent. I’ve been so poor I couldn’t go to fu**ing Columbia and Harvard like Barack Obama, so I had to join the Army and get a bachelor’s degree by taking equivalency exams and a master’s degree by distance learning while I continued to work full time.

If this guy thinks “white” automatically means “privileged” then he needs to stop by the projects and trailer parks and nearly condemned buildings I’ve called home at different times in my life. He needs to know white people people like me who don’t get to go to Ivy League schools and don’t have rich businessmen subsidizing their careers have to work their asses off to get ahead.

And remember: He was also in Chicago during the period of the Jan. 13 when another sermon (discussing Gov. Clinton and sex) was given in which Mr. Wright says “There is a man here, who can take this country in a new direction.”.

Here is Obama’s schedule (reprinted from a past comment) during this period as best I can piece it together via the internet.

    Jan. 11:

Obama visited Las Vegas, making stops at the Culinary Workers Union and Del Sol High School for a town hall meeting.

4:30 p.m., Speech and Town hall in Fallon, NV.
5 p.m., Meeting in Elko, NV.

    Jan. 12:

Obama spends the day in Chicago with his family. I could not find any scheduled campaign events. (Sen. Bill Nelson of NB endorses Obama via conference phone).

Obama did arrive in Chicago’s Midway airfield at 2:30 am. His plane’s wing clipped the wing of another plane after Obama flew back from campaigning in Nevada. Here is the local report of this incident:

    http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=5887078

    Jan 13:

I could not find any campaign events for Sunday morning.

Afternoon: Campaigning in Los Vegas (6:30 pm Pacific)

Evening: Speech at Rosemary Clark School in Pahrump Nevada

Bottom line: Obama was in Chicago to spend time with family (according to his spokesperson) on Saturday. It is not clear when he left Chicago. However, the time line leaves open the possibility that he was in attendance at the Jan 13. sermon of Mr. Wright.

There is a simple way to clarify this confusion: Instead of having me search piecemeal through the Internet, Sen. Obama should release his schedule for this period.

  • yttik

You’re darn right. White does not automatically mean priviledged.

Something else I find absolutely galling, I’m being accused of “oppressing” a man who makes 450,000 a year plus book royalties, etc. A man who’s so down and out he’s running for the highest office in the land.

For crying out loud, Obama’s not on the corner trying to flag a cab, he’s flying around in a private jet.

Yes, that’s me, always standing on the rich man’s neck and holding him back.

  • Story Lady

I’m sitting here musing … wondering what exactly is the conversation in Andrew Sullivan’s head. Once for Bush, once against Kerry, now for Obama. That guy has issues is the answer I came up with.

And I agree, that in the world of the racist AA, white means privilege and guilty and black means victim and underprivileged (As in OJ Simpson?).

I was raised in a black neighborhood. Many of my black friends had better home situations than their white (you may describe them as red-necks or trailer trash which is still today an acceptable way to refer to poor white people) counterparts.

The blacks back then were very angry all the time. I always thought that was because they had leaders who were angry.

Most of my black friends did better than the white ones. Just as did Mr. Wright. What the hell has he got to be so angry about? How was he so held down that he got so many degrees, huh?

Something tells me this church is no different than all the others. Send them money. Only with this joker, they use racism to drum up cash and the strawman is the “White people.” This is probably one of the oldest scam formulas in history.

And Obama strikes me like the kind of guy who can appreciate a good blue collar scam.

A-yeah, I can see how Wright is his mentor.

  • Strawberrybitch

“Hillary never had a cab whiz by because of the color of her skin.” Well I can guarantee you that the good reverend has never had to worry that the cabbie might pull over in a secluded area and rape him. Or rip him off because of course a woman is too stupid to know the difference and if she does know the difference, she’s too weak to defend herself. What a pud.

    >>> …you may describe them as red-necks or trailer trash which is still today an acceptable way to refer to poor white people…
It’s SO nice to know that the term, “white nigger,” has been so supplanted. Particularly among smart-assed Yankees so brilliant and cultured that they think Shostakovich is a brand of vodka.

Actually, we call each other, “peckerwoods,” a lot, “Rednecks,” (it’s always capitalized) constantly and, when in Foreign Lands or among non-English speakers, “Gringoes.”

“Gringo,” has come to mean a non-hyphenated American.

Think of it another way: without us Rednecks, there’d be a shortage of Master Sergeants, few Warrant Officers, not many truck drivers and a dearth of Welders so pronounced that American industry would be clamoring en masse for 250,000 H1B visas.

    >>> Something tells me this church is no different than all the others. Send them money…This is probably one of the oldest scam formulas in history.

No one has mentioned that as an attorney and US Senator Obama heard rants full of politically charged directives and invective…all illegal as this church receives tax free status, and this kind of race, hate ranting and politicizing is illegal.

Some judgement. Obama is damaged, compromised, dishonest, and a patent liar when he says he never heard anything like this in 20 years prior to disavowing him in 2007 at start of his campaign.

The arrogance here suggests further that they have a stranglehold on the Democratic party and the Black Caucus in congress is pulling the strings, The party is terrified.

Miserable Pelosi really wants Obama but hides it as she feels O B will bring her party power…finally.

My sugggestion: Let them drop out of the party. From what I am seeing, America has more than racist and sexist problems, it has a terminal illness called….Cowardice, fear, and hate. If Obama is nominated, hopefully he will be defeated, or we are lost.

If he is elected we will see the worst division and chaos possible. The progressives are divvied in half, and the moderates will go GOP for sure.

The only win for these wimps in Dem Party is Hillary, but they’ve been “had”.

Had by a supreme opportunist filled with contempt and hate he artfully hides and employs with his rhetoric to advance what Rev. Wright and Farrakhan have taught him for 20 years.

And now I know why Oprah has invested so much more in South Africa than in America. She is a long standing member of Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church.

This is an abominable situation for all of us whatever our political preferences.

  • norrismorris
