Open Thread + A Rant

From our great video magician C.S., here’s this video of a CNN interview of Iraqi soldiers:

And then there’s this true story from a neighborhood somewhere in America, along with a rant by me:

A pal spotted this comment in a thread at Taylor Marsh’s outstanding blog:

“One neighbor (a founder of moveon.org) took down his Obama sign today. I saw him and said in jest, “Hey, the race isn’t over yet – your guy might still win”. His reply. ‘Hate is hate. I have never accepted or condoned it in anyone my entire life — I am not starting now.’”

Mr. Obama, you can say that Rev. Jeremiah Wright is your “former” pastor, as you did in Indiana yesterday. You can minimize him by saying that he’s no longer with the church — that he’s on “sabbatical,” as you repeatedly told the Indiana gathering. (Isn’t that convenient. Whose idea was it for him to go on “sabbatical”? Axelrod’s?)

The thing is: Your minimizations sound just like criminals who, even as they acknowledge their crimes, seek to minimize the cruel damage they did to their victims.

It’s not working anymore, Mr. Obama. And every American, except the Kool-Aid intoxicated, sees through you.

You can’t minimize your way out of this one. You sat in those pews for 20 years. You gave more money to his church than any other charity — twice as much, in fact. You referred to him frequently as your “mentor” and your spiritual adviser. You took the name of your book — The Audacity of Hope — from one of his sermons.

He married you and Michelle. He baptized both of your daughters. He “blessed” your new mansion.

You asked him to speak at your big announcement that you were running for the presidency. At the last moment, your campaign pulled him from the roster because he’s controversial. You CANNOT claim you didn’t know about his hate-filled, racist speech. You knew. You knew ALL along. And your wife Michelle mimics his anti-American speech.

You can’t weasel out of this one, Mr. Obama. It’s taking some Americans a bit of time to figure out who you really are. But they are figuring you out, and you’re going to be finished soon.

Let’s hope it happens before the Democratic party — hellbent, it seems, on shooting itself in the foot once more — nominates you. Because if Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean can’t get beyond their inflated egos and see you for who you are, and stop you before it’s too late, the Republicans will finish you off in a general election, and we’ll be stuck with President John McCain.

=============

I may be quiet tomorrow morning. One of my cats, my beloved Bear, has a serious wound that is infected, and we’re going to try to get him in to the vet first thing. Wish him well. He’s the dearest, dearest cat. But he’s pretty sick and weak. I’ll let you know more after we get him to the vet.

    THANKS SUSAN..!!!

Thanks! I feel so badly I didn’t see it sooner — but I can’t pick him up, and he hasn’t been cuddly, like he usually is, for the past couple days. I coaxed him onto my lap tonight, and it was then that i saw the big wound. Poor baby. He also has a cold, and his right eye is runny.

    :::::::

See my new post just above. We need to demand that the media ask Obama this question until he provides his calendar.

  • TeakWoodKite

    He “blessed” your new mansion.
Missed that one…Where is the Dali Lama when you need him?

“The bar that is consentanly moving …the thing that you do is just not good enough….”everyone is an enemy”
    Michelle Obama, Villanova Penn.

Must have benn listening to the Wright preacher man,
cause she is sermonizing like him. My sane half says she is “talking like an oppressed blackwoman.”

It just struck me she sounds like she has been the “pew” too long…

(no disrespect intended) ,which is wierd I find it nessasary to say so.

    Meow to Bear…

Meanwhile, the prObama blogs try to ignore their way out of this.

Spengler of Asia Times — that mysterious columnist who writes so wel — is at it again:

(I haven’t read it yet but thought many of you would want to see this.)

  • DisenfranchisedVoter

Awww. Best wishes to Bear. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious.
I read that comment on Taylor Marsh’s website too and I was like “WOAH”. A founder of Moveon.org is disgusted? Imagine the thousands of people out there who voted for Obama, who worked their asses off and spent their entire day at the caucus to help him win, and now regret even voting for him. This is what happens when the “liberal media” is so scared to vet Obama without being called racist that they allow him to go on in this contest without being fully vetted to the public. Imagine the thousands of Republicans who thought it would be fun to screw over Hillary Clinton or maybe even thought Obama was kinda cool. They are probably cursing themselves for being bamaboozled by the Obamas.

I’m very saddened. Half of the Democratic Party has been duped, “hoodwinked”. And our leaders choose to turn a blind eye rather than quickly resolve the MI and FL primary issue or stop covering Obama’s ass and giving him all of these chances to unfairly win the nomination.

DONATE, DONATE, DONATE. Obama is in deep sh*t but considering that Pelosi and Dean are still planning to stop at anything to help him steal this nomination from Hillary, we still need to keep our eye on the ball and help her win big in the remaining states.

When’s the last time anyone can remember the Fed cutting the rate on a Sunday night? Well Bernake just did it & he’ll do it again Tues. Chase bought Bear Sterns for 1/10 of value…US futures, asian stocks, dollar tumble…soverign wealth funds & private equities placing their bets on gold/oil/commodities…read the financials if you dare. Hope the cat gets better.

  • bert

It is !!!!! Plus there is a lot of other great stuff there. Too tired to read it all yet tonight, but will get to it tomorrow.

Thank you Susan and Larry. Since I found NO QUARTER just a few short weeks ago I have found so many wonderful and great blogs I never knew existed. I had been so depressed about the campaign and the media bias and the sexist attitudes by the MSM and blogers that I had lost hope. This site has given me hope, made me discover I was not alone, and now makes me feel like I can contribute again.

Again Susan, I hope for the best with your cat tomorrow. I will be sending positive thoughts.

  • grtphoto

Thanks for the link. Read it and strongly encourage everyone to read it along with the next blog by one of the 9/11 widows; great writing.
Thank you Susan. You are really kicking butt! I guess Mr. Obama is really giving everyone plenty to write about and read. I am very pleased to see both Joe Conason and Steve Clemons; 2 people I’ve looked to and trusted in the past, write about and question BO’s bonefides. It seems that all these facts that he cannot produce is so obvious, this is an elementary excuse. Please. At the very least (to be kind) it is insulting to the American people.

  • http://papertigertail.blogspot.com otherlisa

Wow. I just read the Asia Times article. I thought the first one was very provocative, maybe over the top, worth reading for the perspective it offered.

This one is actually quite sympathetic to Michelle Obama, which makes it all the more devastating. I can’t argue with his conclusions.

The tragedy of this whole situation is that if Obama had only waited, served in the Senate, got some distance between him and people like Wright and Rezko, he might have been a viable candidate. Maybe Michelle Obama would also gain the perspective she needs to deal with the highly stressful role of political spouse.

But whatever “audacity” Obama has that led him to jump into the race at this time really is hubris, the fatal flaw that drives all tragedy.

Bloomberg.com: “One reason banks are loosing money is the repeal 9 yrs ago of the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act, it seperated commercial & investment banking after excessive risk contributed to the Great Depression”…Wonder who was President 9 yrs ago when that happened??? Our currency is basically backed by debt, very risky, very bad debt. To date I see no reason to think any of the 3 canidates is qualified to guide us out of this crisis & maybe that’s no accident.

    Excellent rant, Susan!!!

Best wishes for Bear. I used to have a fighting cat. He was always getting beaten up. A friend told me about golden seal. You can get it in powdered form at health food stores and places that sell bulk herbs. You just mix a bit of it with enough water to make a paste and stuff it into the wound. It works amazingly fast. I still keep some on hand in case of a kitty disaster. After I found golden seal, I never had to take my kitty boy to the vet again. Over the past 20+ years, I’ve used it at least a dozen times on cat wounds. I wish I lived next door to you. I’d run over right now and doctor old Bear. I have a feeling the eye thing is connected to the wound thing. I’m sure your vet will make it all better!

  • AF catfish

OK all these people who have been telling me how intelligent and brilliant Obama is, can you review the video of Obama saying Wright is a “sounding board” for Obama’s ideas – that Wright is an advisor? Obama saying Wright is a respected “biblical scolar”? This guy Wright “blessed” the Rezko-Obama mansion? Obama gave $20 grand to this church year before last?

Tell me with a straight face the naivete of Obama does not frighten you.

  • kenoshaMarge

I too am glad that two men whose work I respected so much are asking the kinds of questions that need to be asked. My question is; what the hell took them so long?

  • rjj

This is so odd. All of a sudden the exit polls of one and two weeks ago show this?

Headline: Many voting for Clinton to boost GOP

    Seek to prolong bitter battle

For a party that loves to hate the Clintons, Republican voters have cast an awful lot of ballots lately for Senator Hillary Clinton: About 100,000 GOP loyalists voted for her in Ohio, 119,000 in Texas, and about 38,000 in Mississippi, exit polls show.

    Boston Globe

Did they headline the Democrats for a Day support of Obama?

  • Dora Ratquila

Much love to Bear! BO is toast!

  • rjj

It leaves the impression that Pubs want to run against Clinton. The subhead technically rescues the distortion of the headline.

  • chris

leave it to a Boston paper to tell me about Texas like I don’t know it for myself. Folks, for weeks I raised the warning flag about more and more comments appearing on the local newspaper sites that clearly indicated the intent to distort the primary outcome against Clinton. I did not see at any time people who indicated they would support Clinton to keep from having Obama, while clearly stating they’d vote Republican in November.

If I have to, I guess I’ll subscribe to the papers in some way to go to the archived articles and pull up tons of posts that made me sick at the time because it showed them stating, “anyone but Clinton. Go out and vote in primary, you can still vote for a Republican in November. Stop this woman at any costs” and the like.

I called the Austin chapter of Hillary’s campaign and they were frustrated because…’some republicans may simply be defecting’. One lady was sort of dismissive when I called with specific links to demonstrate an orchestrated movement to affect the primary and caucuses. “well, its their right to vote as they wish. i understand your concern but there isn’t anything we can do about it.”

It must be nice to write bullshit from 1800 miles away in Boston. But when you get active in an issue and find someone writing something that completely defies the on the ground reality in your own back yard…its gross incompetence to not double check your info.

With a little critical thought, I have to conclude that SOME voters did the same in reverse, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that by the article from the Boston Globe.

    So here’s some links:
Letter: Be ‘Dem for a Day’ to support Obama

Take a look at the various exit polls if you wish, but that doesn’t matter to me. I’d rather look at the concerted efforts.

Here’s a sizable post on it:

Perhaps fueled by Clinton dislike, many Republicans to vote for Obama
    Comments included:
“1Bigkahuna: It’s a secret ballot. You can vote for anyone you want in the general election. Voting in the primary does not force you to vote for that party.”

    “viejo wrote:

    B. Hussein Obama will join McGovern and Mondale in the annals of history.”

    “clh8712 wrote:

“I urge you to vote against Hillary Clinton by voting for Barack Obama. Please forward this e-mail to all your Texas Republican and Independent friends so that we can help ensure the Clinton’s defeat on March 4th!!!”

    Or websites like:
    Promote Republicans for Obama
    Tue, 01/23/2007 – 11:15pm — Nickole K
I would be interested in putting a promotion for this site on my web site. If someone with just a little internet/design knowledge would create an “ad” with the web site and name of the web site I would gladly display it on my site. Hopefully this will get more people interested in Mr. Obama for 2008 and away from mean-nasty Hillary.

There are too many examples…but here’s some.

Now, I know it equally is clear there are Republicans who tainted the system by voting for Clinton to defeat Obama, based on their hatred for Muslims and the association that he is a closet muslim. But did the Clinton campaign foster this? Were there flyers trying to promote this?

Susan, I’m sorry for kitty’s problems. I know how that is. A family member in crisis.
Back to the topic. The wright sermons are available on DVD. Obama can’t say he never heard of them. He probably owns them all. It really goes further to explain Michelle Obama’s statement that “for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of this country.” Whaaa? I see there’s a parade of Obama supporters on CSpan this morning doing damage control. Don’t think its going to help much. How can Wright be defended? No matter what the pundits say, all Americans are going to be exposed to the vileness of this church. The IRS should get involved here. Watching the preacher talk about Hillary like he did. And blaming 911 on America? Its too much.

  • BernieO

I could not agree with you more. Obama’s rush to power is clear evidence of hubris. (Why don’t more Dems see that?) What I am not sure of is whether this is a permanent condition that infects serious narcissists like Bush or if it is just the result of a smart, talented, charming young guy who has always been such a star that he needs to be knocked off his high horse to come down to earth, buckle down and realize his true potential.
Unfortunately because of Obama’s impatience, we may never find out. I am afraid that Obama may have destroyed his own chances by being so ridiculously overconfident in his ability to charm his way to the top. If the public is paying attention to the Reverend Wright issue, the Rezko mess, and Michelle’s one woman pity party Obama will likely be permanently tainted.
Had Obama had more humility and used his time in the Senate to take advantage of this great opportunity to prepare himself the way Hillary has done, Democrats would have had the prospect of not one, but two outstanding presidents for the next 16 years. Instead, his impatience and ambition will likely ruin the chances for one, if not both of them to ever be elected. It is a tragedy not only for the Democratic party but for our nation.

  • Nancy

Good luck to Bear the cat. Susan, I know how you feel, I have 11 cats. Mostly all barn cats and strays, but all characters in their own right.

Right now, Hillary is giving a policy speech. It’s being carried by CNN. OOooo… ‘words are good only if you follow them with action.’ “It’s not the speeches a president delivers… it’s whether a president delivers on his speeches.” She blasted Obama on Samantha Power’s little talk with the BBC… go Hillary! Excellent speech!! How she will care for our soldiers that are wounded. She will reduce length of tours. She will kick out the armed private military contractors… with the ultimate goal of forbidding such troops in any military operation. No more no bid contracts. Oh, hell, they cut her off.

As for Wright, how anyone could characterize him as a moderate is really beyond me. Is there such a term as black supremacy? Why is it not racist to say the things he says? I guess I don’t understand.

  • Nancy

Oh, I almost forgot. That video of Kyra Phillips interviewing Iraqi soldiers is just amazing. I liked it so much that I downloaded it from CNN. It’s just amazing… I’m glad that you posted it here, Susan.

  • Marjorie

I was in a motel breakfast area in Joplin, Mo. last Saturday morning. Two men [truckers, perhaps, as a truck stop was adjacent to the motel] at a table a few feet from where I was sitting said something I thought was about the Mi. primary. When I asked if he had heard something about it [I live in Mi], he said he saw the story about Obama and Rev. Wright on tv. He told me about it, and said he was going to vote for Hillary.
This is obviously a sample of one [maybe two, if we count the other man] but someone who was disgusted with Obama and willing to volunteer a pro Hillary vote in a public place in Joplin, Mo.

  • Marjorie

One more thing. I thought I heard or read that Obama said he would keep Blackwater and the other contractors in Iraq, but would withdraw troops. Did anyone hear anything like that?
    Hope Bear is doing well.

  • BernieO

Guess I am now talking to – or writing to myself…..
I just wanted to post a few thoughts about the odious, but occasionally insightful Bill Kristol’s column about Obama’s pastor in today’s NYTimes:

This doesn’t mean that Obama agrees with Wright’s thoroughgoing and conspiracy-heavy anti-Americanism. Rather, Obama seems to have seen, early in his career, the utility of joining a prominent church that would help him establish political roots in the community in which he lives.

I think Kristol hit the nail on the head. We seem to forget that Obama is a culturally white man who is half black, not the other way around. Yet he will always be regarded as a black man, just as Tiger Woods is. If he wanted to make a career in politics he needed to find a way to fit into the AA community and joining a large, influential black church was a way to make himself fit in. Ditto for all his talk about being on the edge and using “blow”. (When the NYTimes checked with his friends from high school and college, no one remembered him being into drugs. He was always a serious, good student so this was clearly political posturing.)
I do not fault Obama for finding a way to be a part of this community in order to get elected, but there is no reason that he could not have found another church once Reverend Wright’s bigotry became clear. Obama has to know that Wright’s victim message is harmful to the very people that Obama was elected to represent. Yet he obviously believed that he was so special that he would not be held accountable for this – or for his association with Rezko. That behavior is strong evidence of the delusions of a person infected with hubris. It is a dangerous trait, as we have so painfully seen during the past eight years.

  • Andy

I have to say that I find it a bit curious that a
    founder of moveon.org finds out now about Obama…. Wright has been out there for a while;
the NYT and RS wrote about him over a year ago; there are YouTube videos about a year old. I knew about his association to Farrakhan, their trip to Lybia for a while, about his 9/11 comments and read about his Jan 2006 speeech about Aids.

What leads me to think: (a) either they wanted to be blind b/c of [..you fill the blanks..]
    (b) some of these people are really naive
    (c) they knew but are just embarrased it finally
caught up with the public at large.
