my, how the times, they are a changin’

These are some of the stories I read this week. There seems to be a new tone emerging in the media, wrt Obama. I don’t really have anything to add to these stories – they are pretty much to the point, and quite interesting. I included a snippet from each story, but recommend reading them all. Some are links provided by NQ readers, and some I saw elsewhere, but wanted to make sure ya’ll have seem them!

This one is my favorite.
Barack Obama Is a Terrible Bore
by Michael Wolff:

Sheesh, the guy is Jimmy Carter.

That homespun bowling crap on Jay Leno, followed by the turgid, teachy fiscal policy lecture, together with the hurt defensiveness (and bad script for it) that everybody in Washington “is Simon Cowell… Everybody’s got an opinion,” is pure I’m-in-over-my-head stuff. Even the idea of having to go on Jay Leno to rescue yourself from the AIG mess is lame. Be a man, man.

The guy just doesn’t know what to say. He can’t connect. Emotions are here, he’s over there. He can’t get the words to match the situation.

This began, I’d argue, from the first moment. He punted on the inaugural. Everybody ran around like crazy trying to praise it because if Barack Obama couldn’t give a speech then what?

But now, at week 11, we’re face-to-face with the reality, the man can’t talk worth a damn.

This one nails it.
Five Signs of a Flailing Presidency
The White House tries its hand at damage control.
by Fred Barnes

You don’t have to be an old Washington hand to spot the telltale signs of a presidency and an administration in serious trouble. There’s nothing new about these clues. The inability to get their stories straight–that’s a hardy perennial of high-level officials caught in the vise of political embarrassment. A president who skips town to avoid the White House press corps and speak directly to the American people–we’ve sure seen that before. So in a sense the AIG mess has touched off nothing more than business as usual.

What goes on in Washington usually comes across as background noise to the public, but not this time. Bonuses for AIG executives are like the infamous Bridge to Nowhere–an issue that’s broken through outside Washington. And we know it’s become a major political problem for the president because he and his administration act as if it has. Here are five signs of this:

1. His allies are moving to protect the president.

2. The president gets out of town.

3. Top spokesmen dismiss the crisis as a distraction.

4. Administration figures can’t keep their stories straight.

5. The president indulges in hyperbole.

Too Clever by Half
By David Warren

…How to explain this apparent contradiction? I’m afraid it is easy. As I mentioned during the presidential campaign, Mr. Obama was seriously unqualified for the job of president. He had no practical experience in running anything, except political campaigns; but worse, his background was one-dimensional.

All his life, from childhood through university through “community organizing” and Chicago wardheel politics, through Sunday mornings listening to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, to the left side of Democrat caucuses in Springfield and Washington, he has been surrounded almost exclusively by extremely liberal people, and moreover, by people who are quick and clever but intellectually narrow. snip

The video to Iran is the latest catastrophe. Mr. Obama simply does not understand how his “olive branch” will be received, not only by the mullahs in Iran itself, but wherever else on the surface of the planet the United States has enemies. It “reads” — to people who do not share anything like America’s aspirations — as an unambiguous confession of weakness. He has moved the American position towards Iran from offensive to defensive, for no defensible reason.

This one is especially surprising, considering the source.
Despair over financial policy
by Paul Krugman

The Geithner plan has now been leaked in detail. It’s exactly the plan that was widely analyzed — and found wanting — a couple of weeks ago. The zombie ideas have won.

The Obama administration is now completely wedded to the idea that there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the financial system — that what we’re facing is the equivalent of a run on an essentially sound bank.

snip

This plan will produce big gains for banks that didn’t actually need any help; it will, however, do little to reassure the public about banks that are seriously undercapitalized. And I fear that when the plan fails, as it almost surely will, the administration will have shot its bolt: it won’t be able to come back to Congress for a plan that might actually work.

What an awful mess

The Obama network is even turning on the One.
Obama the candidate vs. Obama the president
U.S. leader finds campaign promises don’t always mesh with reality
Associated Press

President Barack Obama’s optimistic campaign rhetoric has crashed headlong into the stark reality of governing.

In office two months, he has backpedaled on an array of issues, gingerly shifting positions as circumstances dictate while ducking for political cover to avoid undercutting his credibility and authority. That’s happened on the Iraq troop withdrawal timeline, on lobbyists in his administration and on money for lawmakers’ pet projects.

While the article still refers to Obama as a great communicator, they do point out his current failings.
Obama struggles as communicator
By JIM VANDEHEI & MIKE ALLEN

Of all the pitfalls Barack Obama might face in the presidency, here is one not many people predicted: He is struggling as a public communicator.

The sluggish and unsteady response to the uproar over AIG bonuses highlights a larger problem of his White House: Obama’s surprisingly uneven campaign to educate people about the economic crisis and convince Washington and the broader public that he is in command of circumstances.

And for those Obama defenders, who think the bowling joke was no big deal:
Not bowled over by Obama’s Special Olympics joke
By Stacy St. Clair and John McCormick
Despite the president’s apology, athletes and others say they are disappointed with his remark on Jay Leno’s show.

  • lark

Obama says yes on some issues before he says no. On other issues he says no before he says yes. Then on some he may say yes and no and then on others no and yes. But everyone is clear about everything, and more so when he preludes a comment by making sure he is being clear about it.

That One must have done something to piss off his best bud, Teleprompter, huh?

                • I’mFedUp

It’s just unbelievable Ferd. I mean come on. The one of him “thanking himself” is truly scary. I think he’s on something. There’s just way too much of this nonsense going on. TOTUS let him down, but how stupid do you have to be to read “I would like to thank President Obama” if you ARE “President Obama?”

                  • Ferd Berfle

It is unbelievable but given all the teleprompter jokes going around, I couldn’t resist some levity (or I might go batshit insane). His combination plate is short one taco I’m afraid.

I have been watching this story, and still unsure about it.

I just find it SO hard to believe that Obama doesn’t know Sarkozy is the Pres… I thought they have already met, etc. I read Obama was responding to a letter from Chirac.

I don’t know… perhaps they are working together on something specific? I have no doubt he was kissing his ass as far as opposing the war, but a complete breakdown like that??

I can’t imagine he is THAT idiotic that he forgot about Sarkozy??

I wanted to write about this, but I want to be sure first.

It has crossed my mind, that if true, 0dumbo signs letters written by his cadre of kool-aid drinking Loyal-but-Dumb staffers without reading them. Sort of what he does with the bills that he signs. He just likes signing things, anything, makes him feel important, like he is actually working and accomplishing stuff.

            • politicalidentitycrisis

Good. I’ll prepare his letter of resignation for him!

          • tango

I don’t have a problem with a reply letter if in fact Chirac sent a congratulatory one to Obama. The question then should be: has Obama responded to Sarkozys congratulations letter OR sent him a letter period speaking of the hope they could work togather the next 4 years? All the stories talk about how Sarkozy wants to come to America or have the Obamas come to France but the Obama Administration can’t be bothered to even discuss it. Supposedly both the French President and people are offended.

I’m surprised noone has asked for an official comment from either the Obama or Sarkozy administration in regards to whether there has been an exchange of letters between the two. If there has been, the letter and it’s contents to Chirac are no big deal. If not, then I think it’s disrespectful to Sarkozy to thank the previous head of a country before the current one. At least Obama should’ve sent out two letters at once – one to Chirac and one to Sarkozy thanking them for their congratulations.

            • Lyn

There has been NO reply to Sarkozy, a couple days before PUMA in Botland http://europumas.over-blog.com/ posted about the letter, she wrote about being reported (complete with cute cartoons) Sarkozy being upset that Obama is ignoring him http://europumas.over-blog.com/10-index.html

I think you do know that he was writing to Chirac as a personal gesture – not because he thought he is the President. not that Obama could not make a bonehead mistake, but that is a bit farfetched. the letter does not in any way indicate that he (Obama) is writing to a President. Its the old game – you see what you want to see.

Krugman’s “zombie ideas have won” reminds me of this article that appeared in left-leaning Salon.com on Feb 7 “Obama’s Team of Zombies” by David Sirota:

“Only weeks ago, the political world was buzzing about a ‘team of rivals’. America was told that finally, after years of yes men running the government, we were getting a president who would follow Abraham Lincoln’s lead, fill his administration with varying viewpoints, and glean empirically sound policy from the clash of ideas. Little did we know that ‘team of rivals’ was what George Orwell calls ‘newspeak’: an empty slogan ‘claiming that black is white, in contradiction of the plain facts.’”

How long have No Quarter visitors saying this exact thing?

About Obama being a bore, how could so many not have noticed this before? All of the flailing of arms and plagiarized rhetorical flourishes couldn’t hide this fact from those who wanted to discern what was real and what was not.

  • Portia Elizabeth

Imagine my delight astonishment this AM when I saw on the home page of Yahoo a story about That One being “punch drunk”.

What is slowly sucking the life out of me is the continued op-ed coverage in The Boston Globe of our “Communicator-in-Chief”. I don’t know whether to scream until my face turns blue, pull out what’s left of my hair (large chunks were lost back in November), or do both.

That One is not a communicator. He’s a reader. He can read. If not for speech-writers and teleprompters he is a virtual imbecile who’s rapidly making Dubya look like a Rhodes Scholar. Why is this idea so difficult for so-called erudite people to grasp? Just thinking about it sets my teeth on edge.

When Americans turn their sights on an individual that is falling out of favor, they can be heartlessly cruel. 0bama is rapidly becoming the favored target of the kind of ridicule, contempt, and sarcasm that is so severe, it will start to tear away at his very fabric and soul. When the MSM becomes disillusioned with him, he may be reduced to a blubbering pile of goo. Having his picture adorn dartboards across the country will cause his Narcissistic wonderland to dissolve into the harsh reality that his world is actually a pile of shit, and he is a maggot dwelling in it’s center. What else can I say about this ruthless onslaught except………….GOOD WORK!!!! KEEP IT UP FOLKS!!!

    • DAB

Along with Narcissus, he could also be compared to Icarus who reached too high and quickly got burned by the Sun and fell to Earth.

I am surprised though that it happened so quickly — I was giving him at least his first hundred days.

      • andrew191

        Icarus was at least interesting.

        • DAB

True — guess I was offering him too much credit with that comparison.

      • Portia Elizabeth

And Icarus’ arrogance only hurt himself. That One is trying to destroy all of us.

        • http://noquarter foxyladi14

a lot like those suicide bombers.

    • Elizabeth

I couldn’t care less about ego, but I seriously DO NOT want these incidences to establish Obama as functionally incapable of performing his duties if he isn’t going to be formally removed from office. It seems to open an incredibly dangerous precedent that will be taken as a huge weakness internationally.

      • andrew191

        It’s also fun!

Seriously, if you feel that domestically undermining our Pres. will cause us to be weakened in the eyes or our enemies, then you should demand a collective apology from the left for the last 8 years of their ridicule of Bush. Or do you accept double standards?

        • Elizabeth

When did Bush ever appear to be the point of a nervous breakdown ? I’m saying the press shouldn’t gratuitously bully him over the edge without calling for impeachment or some other means to a removal from office.

          • Lyn

Maybe they can finally start asking to see his BC, and college admission records to see what he said his nationality was to get in? Or ask to see IF he was adopted and what name he went by in Indonesia? THAT might be one way to get rid og him before he has 3 year, 9 months more time to destroy our Country, wether on purpose or because he is weak and incompident

          • andrew191

So it’s O.K. to relentlessly call Bush a liar, a murderer, Chimpy McChimp, etc. because he can take it? But everyone had better back off 0bama because he’s a wilting flower and will crumble under the pressure?

Perhaps intense scrutiny is an important part of the process that will expose someone’s fitness, or lack of it. 0bama got a free pass in the campaign, no one dared to harshly criticise him from fear of being called a racist. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do. If he can’t take it, TOUGH! Get the Hell out of our White House!!

            • I’mFedUp

Bush walked into office and got 9/11, courtesy of Slick Willie. Yeah, yeah, we can argue that point, but it’s simply a fact that it had been planned for four years before Bush got into the White House. Can you imagine what Bush had on his hands? And we’re still alive, which we might not say for much longer. Yet, the loonie tunes on the left keep bashing Bush, but wanting us to give wimpy, imbecile, fraudulent, lying, con man, cheater, racist, America hating 0Zero a free ride? Give me a break.

              • Ani

No — Bush got 9/11 courtesy of HIMSELF. Another man who liked to go on a lot of vacations.

He had no respect for the Clinton administration and when Sandy Berger et al tried to brief them and warn them about Bin Laden and any pending threats or things to be aware of, Bush, Cheney, Rummy and Condi all turned a blind eye and a deaf ear. They further got briefing reports over the summer from the FBI that they likewise chose to ignore — don’t you blame this on Bill Clinton.

I will not allow revisionist history on behalf of Obama and I certainly won’t allow it on behalf of Bush.

                • I’mFedUp

Ani…I know what I know and you believe what you believe. I’m sorry, I was never a PUMA and I don’t worship the Clintons. I have supported Hillary, but I don’t buy the meme that Republicans are bad and Democrats are good. It gets a little tired on this side of it to continually hear what I personally believe to be revisionist as well. As for “allowing” what I can believe? Wow.

                  • Ani

Forgive me — you can believe whatever you want — I just get pissed when people keep trashing the Clintons. If that came out incorrectly, I apologize.

But I have demonstrated quite clearly that I put country before party, otherwise as a lifelong Democrat, I would have supported Obama once Hillary was pushed out and I did not. I voted for McCain.

I absolutely do not demonize Republicans and will not do that. That does not mean that I thought Bush was a good president. While my rhetoric may have been over the top above, you are saying that my point is all Republicans are bad — that is not so — I just didn’t think Bush was a good leader.

                    • I’mFedUp

You are welcome to your opinion. I don’t agree that Clinton was a great President. Maybe if he hadn’t been playing with Monica, IN THE WHITE HOUSE, I would respect him more. But the bottom line is that I happen to know that he was told by the CIA that they could “take Bin Laden out” and Clinton said “no.” Bin Laden couldn’t have done this to us if he was dead. Pretty simple IMO.

I didn’t vote for Bush either time, and I’m not saying he was the greatest President. I’m just saying that it’s really easy to piss on the GOP all day when honestly IMO the Dems are a way bigger problem these days and I departed that sick group during the caucus fraud days. Look at what’s happening to us. It’s not pretty. Let’s agree to disagree. We have bigger problems now than to argue about a past we can’t change. We need to save our country from impending destruction, no matter what party we belong to, or who we admire. Cool?

                    • Ani

                      Cool.

I have discovered along the way there is plenty of blame to go around — on many fronts.

                    • I’mFedUp

Ani, my head is spinning with all the blame. But this particular group of people has me beyond disgusted. Now it’s sheer terror. I can’t even look back anymore and try to figure out who did what. I am so scared right now.

          • http://firefox AnnieCollier

Actually, there were suspicions that Bush had gone back to drinking…at one time he seemed pretty wobbly.

            • I’mFedUp

Yes I heard that. And I saw somewhere that Laura Bush was going to write a book and chat about his drinking problem. I don’t really care about Bush at this point though. I care that this freak with his crack addled brain is getting a hall pass.

    • Lyn

THIS was the guy the comedians said they couldn’t make fun of because he was so perfect lol

Couldn’t resist…..Mt Redoubt blows in AK…what perfect timing.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090323/ap_on_re_us/alaska_volcano

WILLOW, Alaska – Alaska’s Mount Redoubt volcano erupted five times overnight, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air in the volcano’s first emissions in nearly 20 years.

    • Ferd Berfle

sending an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air

Hell’s bells, when Congress is in session, that sort of expelling of hot gas is an everyday occurrence.

    • CentralMass

Hahaha…. It does present the perfect back-drop doesn’t it.

  • rjj

JESUS TAPDANCING CHRIST, people. The press is turning on him and you think this is a good sign? They didn’t turn on Ronald Reagan or George Bush. Anybody wonder why it’s safe (in terms of job security) to do this now, but it wasn’t before the election?

    • Lyn

It is so obvious he is in over his head, they are probably trying to save their jobs, since he is making it impossible for them to cover for him anymore without looking more out of touch and just stupid.

      • Scout

Or it was all a set-up to keep out a president who actually had the know-how, the experience, and the huevos to confront the banks and wall-street and keep us out of this mess.

        You know, Hillary.

        • I’mFedUp

That is exactly why they removed Hillary from her shot at the White House. 0Zero is going along with the destruction of the US, this New World Order nonsense, the deliberate collapse of the dollar, etc. and Hillary would not have let it happen. So therefore the caucus fraud, phony BS primary and convention, etc. all so these nuts could stop Hillary from saving our country. There’s so much evil to this that it’s terrifying.

        • rjj

There was no keeping us out of this mess, but HRC would have been less susceptible to manipulation with bad press. She was a veteran of the Fair Game Game.

    • beebop

      Timing?

      • rjj

Always a good question. What are your thoughts?

  • Obama: Dubya II Electric Boogaloo

LOL, and I see Dailykooks is still pimping that ridiculous 67/28 poll, as their web stats continue to fall.

Although it’s clear that all these writers of the above stories obviously hate black people…/snark

Who would have thought that Paul Krugman was a KKK style racist? Once Captain Kumbaya hits under 50% approval rating just wait for his minions to inundate the media with the “we’re still a racist country after all” meme.

    • http://firefox AnnieCollier

      And don’t forget…we’re really mean.

  • Tex-Mex Soup

To borrow a quote from a comedian (sorry can’t recall his name) its been a few years since I heard the skit.

    “I’m not a failure…. I’m a loser”

quite fitting for the anointed one, lol

  • kat in your hat

Oh, I have noticed over the past few weeks that some articles on Obama have started to sound…dare I say: rational and reasonable and not obot-esque. Finally, some in the media are showing signs of not being completely brainwashed or controlled by obot propagandist puppet masters.

    • I’mFedUp

kat in your hat…you are right. Just this morning when I was watching Fox and Friends, yeah yeah I know it’s Fox, but the hosts were actually kind of smirking when talking about Geithner, his plan, and the Fraud. I am sensing that the media knows they blew it big time and they will the rats deserting the SS Fraud Titanic soon too.

  • rw

Nice summary. It might be a good Monday exercise.

  • CG

Nice work AGinI, there were too many articles to list that is for sure. Amazing that NY Times had 4 opinion pieces on Sunday that were suspect of Obama’s leadership (editorial editors, and then Friedman, Rich and Dowd), simply amazing…

So I presume all of us know because we have read newspapers and follow news on the internet, right(?) what Barack Obama should have known… that Sarkozy is the president of France — who can forget Sarkozy up in Maine with W., and all the news reports of meetings between the two, the divorce after he became president of France after a competitive election, and then who can forget his wife Carla Bruni (all over the newspapers and magazines, former model, songwriter-performer, and first lady)? Okay America, obviously Obama does not read newspapers, and perhaps not the daily briefings. Who can forget the brouhaha over the Couric-Palin interview regarding what newspapers Sarah reads, as though places like Alaska don’t receive news publications or that she doesn’t bother to read. I know they have newspapers in Chicago, and I know Obama owns a Blackberry with access to the www. Surely he has one or two laptops with high speed internet. Surely Obama stops by the newstands to admire his face plastered on the covers of newspapers, journals and magazines. So wouldn’t you think he might read one. How is it that Obama assumed the president of France was Jacques Chirac and not Nicolas Sarkozy? Any chance the main stream media will respond and show us the lovely letter Obama wrote to Chirac. Goodness gracious, it isn’t as though France is an insignificant third world country.

    • CG

Two French newspapers reported the story of the letter to Chirac in the context of being irritated by Obama’s faux pas. I guess it doesn’t quite add up http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article4296994.ece if Obama visited Sarkozy in July.

    • Portia Elizabeth

Could it be that papers like the NY Times have finally figured out that the people who actually buy and subscribe to newspapers are people who can reason and think?

      • beebop

The look of red ink is not good for newspapers ….
