On the reservation, the popular herd mentality works well. Head 'em up, move 'em out!

"We'll smoke the enemy out," as George Bush's speech, Audie Murphy films, and Michael Moore's movies all point out.

That isn't a cattle call roundup, it's a rendition lineup.

Blogging from an undisclosed reservation, aka drinking the kool iad.

I had always thought that these Pentagon "briefings" were common knowledge, but perhaps I was in govt too long. It's pretty obvious that the retired military people who provide color commentary on CNN and Fox consistently have far more detail then they would get from just milking old colleagues who are still in harness. The importance of this piece, however, is the linkage of that continuing access to a willingness to tow the party line in varying degrees. I wonder if anyone who is a frequent military talking head has ever been cut off for going too far off of the reservation? Has anyone heard of a case of this?

Thanks Larry and Pat also. This is how I'm reading it and I think the generals are really stuck. I wonder if you two think they should speak up, even though there is the military/civilian power struggle and the respect issue for the SecDef? I am hoping that they do something to stop the insantiy of the admin, but respect that they also feel a huge responsibility to the soldiers in the field right now in terms of safety in Iraq, Afghanistan and those in Iran and Syria. I pray they are talking bluntly to congress, to Jack Murtha and that they will continue to speak with Mr. Hersh on this matter.

YOur insights are very valuable and I am grateful.
