As an ND alum, I would ask that you not cherry pick the priests you choose to quote:

I’d put Fr. Hesburgh up against ANY priest in this country.

There have always been a lot of claims of deliberate infiltration into the churches, and you see the effects of that with the Orthodox church under Communism, which was considered totally corrupted by the Soviets. Given the status and influence of the churches, it only makes sense they should be targeted.

And back to usury for a moment, you want it revisited? If you like the results of downgrading it, perhaps you should also reconsider the need to downgrade homosexuality, because the arguments are similar as far as I know.

No. There’s just been a big battle brewing over Catholic colleges and towing the church line for over a decade. I forget off-hand the document they released on mandatums for professors and the like. There has been talk of stripping some of the universities of the name Catholic over this sort of thing.

I think usury was downgraded as a sin after a big debate about what the Bible actually said about it a few hundred years ago. I guess they aren’t in a position to go back and do that all over again.

As a practicing Catholic I am appalled that Notre Dame will even allow Obama to set foot on their campus.
His views on abortion and life are not consistent with the Catholic faith, and he should not be allowed to speak and certainly not receive any kind of award or recognition from the church or a school that represents the church and its views.

Why do people call adult college men and women “kids”?
“Kids” are 16 years of age and below. Anything older than that is NOT a “kid”. It amazes me to see grown college students referring to themselves as “kids” when they are over 18 years old. Half the population at Cal State (where I attend) is 25 and over.
Anyway, Mr. Obama continues to get all the passes that anyone could dream of. Now people who are offended by this choice (SO WHAT if he is the chief executive of this country!) will be painted as wrong and unfair. They have every right to protest and be disdainful of this selection.

timinu, logical people wouldn’t make bold accusations without the proof to back them up. I keep asking, yet no one has proved that President Obama’s election and presidency are not legit. You can repeat this nonsense as much as you like, but it doesn’t change that fact. None of you people have posted any evidence to support these inane charges. Then as Odinga WAS losing, he counseled him by phone on upping the genocide ante to get his way–shared power with Kibaki. He would need a friend in power in Kenya for his little BC problem.

If anything the Catholic church was badgered for its stance against approving homosexuality,not as if it extended some welcome mat to homosexual pedophiles.
How did they accumulate there and perpetrate their deeds? I don’t understand this. I do not approve of the initial “head in the sand” take the church had, but now it’s been addressed (and then some).
The issue has been used as a clobbering iron for the church ever since, until it’s become an ingrained Michael Jackson joke, so it did enormous damages.
If the background of the way in which these perpetrators funneled into the church becomes better known, it will blow the lid off of the real crux of this scandal.
More light, more truth…not less!
